After the now gone Bobby Nelson's this is my favorite cheese shop. During the COVID lockdown I started ordering boxes of stuff shipped. I hadn't been up there in several years so it was great to taste their delicious sharp cheddar again. They carry a large selection of New Glarus beers, sausages, snack sticks and lots of other stuff to go with the cheese. It's all really good and their prices are very fair. Maybe I've been spoiled by the cheese shops I've found so far, but this one wasn't quite as high on my list as I thought it would be. I found an article talking about their favorite cheese shops along I-94 in Wisconsin and this was one of their top places, so I thought I'd drop in! I was a little disappointed to see it was more of a cheese deli counter than some of the smaller cheese shops I've been to with individual packaged cheese. While they do have a HUGE selection, it wasn't quite as accessible to me as other shops I've enjoyed. They do have some unique items like their salty string cheese, which are super salty but sometimes hit the spot. They also have lots of local goodies like Wisconsin Wine, fudge and summer sausage. A friend and I stopped in today and enjoyed shopping in the most quaint cheese shop. It has such a large selection of cheeses that it was difficult to choose which ones we wanted to take home. Love a Wisconsin cheese shop stop! The Holstein cow alongside the road invited us in. Lots of different cheese, meat sticks, local Wisconsin beers & wines, jerky found here. No samples of anything, so we only bought 4 items ( $36.73). Not the cheapest place to buy these food items-I understand that we are tourists but the sales lady was crabby not only to us but another customer as well. While driving through Wisconsin, we decided we had to stop for some cheese. And the Cheese Chalet was great! The vast array of cheeses that were available was crazy! In the end, we stuck with the classics. The cheese curds were great-be sure to let them get to room temperature to get that squeak! They also have other items to add to a nice snack besides cheese such as some sausages. There's one travel rule that I try to uphold and that is: I can't drive through Wisconsin without stopping for cheese, and especially Brick Cheese. On our outbound trip I happened to spot billboards for a couple of Cheese stores along the Interstate north of Madison. So I made a note of them to look up on Yelp later. There were two of interest to me and they both had similar ratings so I picked Ehlenbach's Cheese Chalet for no particular reason. Being from Wisconsin, I understand that these places are touristy and generally over priced compared to where locals would shop. But there's a cost of convenience and the staff have to feed their families. For some reason, and as mentioned by other Yelpers, Brick Cheese is particularly hard to find in other states. Occasionally I find Mild Brick Cheese at specialty grocery stores, but Medium or Aged Brick is nearly impossible! So that is my focus when I make a Cheese Stop while going through Wisconsin. If you're not sure that you'll like something, ask for a taste. I bought some Medium Brick Cheese and some Beerkaese Aged Brick (now that's what I'm talking about). I also selected some Cheese Curds and String Cheese and even found some tasty looking Bison & Pork Bratwurst that weren't loaded with fillers. They had quite a variety of cheeses and other Wisconsin products. And if you find a Cheese Factory that has a store, you may find less variety but usually at a lower price, like Arena Cheese. read more

It's like a Wisconsinite's Heaven without a bathroom. There are so many varieties of cheese and meat sticks/jerky/sausage/summer sausage that definitely cannot chose just a single item. I stopped here on my way to the WI Dells and on my way home from the WI Dells. Seriously, -1 star for no bathroom and a little bit of sass when my 10 year old goddaughter asked about a bathroom. We were told to go to one of the gas stations or fast food restaurants. Sass was so not necessary. Anyway, it's a cheese and meat lovers delight! We also snagged some beef and cheddar sticks, two landjager, some frozen apple cinnamon breakfast sausages. Doesn't that sound good???!!! Yes yes it does. We saw the cute little mouse on the sign and that pretty much got us, well, that and we're in Wisconsin, so you need to get some good cheese (DuH!). We walked in and it was like I had died and went to cheese heaven! their cheese spread was amazing and we got maybe about 10 different types of cheeses... you only live once. Maria worked with us and she was absolutely amazing. All smiles, advice and great service. We took a while deciding (we would've taken more cheese had we had more luggage space ) but she was really patient with us while we decided and kept adding more and more. They also have a huge variety of candies, sausages, wines, gifts, some beer and other fun stuff that my girls kept asking to buy them. Great little Wisconsin experience on the side of the highway. Cheese shop showcasing many cheese makers and varietals of cheeses. Aged, smoked, herbed, bacon cheese, even a chocolate cheese. Friendly staff let you sample any cheese of the hundreds they seemingly have. We bought a bag full of cheeses. Cheese curds, Wisconsin jalapeño cheddar brats, and even a couple of fudges. My husband, Brent, and I were driving down 90 in Wisconsin and saw the signs for CHEESE I asked him if we could visit Ehlenbach's and it did not disappoint. It's a very cute and neat and orderly place, outside and in. I know I'm of German heritage when I see places like this. There's a place for everything and everything is in its place The building has a German look to it, and the inside also has German-style decor. The trinkets inside go with the theme, selling "Cow Patty" chocolates and cheese hoop earrings. The prices are steep, although I am a firm believer in getting the quality you pay for. We tried the White Cheddar Curds ($7) and they are very yummy with Club House Crackers The Buttered Rum with Pecans was simply delicious So smooth and creamy and rummy. Brent LOVED it and so did I. I was looking for good cheddar cheese. Don't get me wrong - HyVee has a good selection, but it just isn't sharp cheddar cheese. We spotted this place on our way to Cascade Mountain to go skiing, and decided to stop in. I was drawn to their cheese case like a chunk of steel to a very large magnet - clunk. They do offer free samples, and I tried some and liked it so we picked up some: 4 year cheddar 7 year cheddar 10 year extra sharp cheddar Raspberry Ale Belivatano Horseradish Cheddar I wanted more, but my wife put on the brakes - how much can we eat? So I went over to their meats, and picked up some jerky, some beef sticks, and a stick of Beef Salami. Good stuff! If you like cheese, stop in here. If you're driving 39 and don't stop at a cheese chalet/house/inn, are you really even living? I apparently was not, until my last trip to Madison. I'm from Cincinnati and travel to Madison a couple times a year to see family. Every time I've seen the HUGE cow from the highway but haven't stopped. We had already blown through a bag of curds from somewhere else so we stopped into the Chalet for a refill. This place is AWESOME! Probably one of my top 20 favorite places ever. You walk into a cheese paradise. The shop is not large but it is hearty. Cases of cheese are waiting to be cut. Shelves of jams, spreads, fudge, meats and those of the sort are waiting to be purchased. If you're looking for touristy items such as post cards, shot glasses, magnets, foam CHEESE HEADS, then you've found your place. It is easy to spend $$$ here. I recommend the beer cheese curds. They contain wheat so a no go for GF folks but boy are they good. I plan on making a stop here every time I'm back in WI, the fudge is calling my name from afar. read more

At the beginning of COVID, I was pleased to see that they had massively improved their website for online ordering - with rapid shipping to Milwaukee! I was able to stop by in person a few weeks ago, and WOW. Awesome, exceptional job with the precautions! They have installed plexiglass the entire length of the front counter. They have clear and explicit signage all over the place reminding folks to make room and mask up. All of the employees are properly masked - no noses! A wonderful shopping experience - thanks! Now down to business - you definitely NEED: the smoked pepper string cheese, the salty plain string, the garlic dill curds, the chili and lime havarti, the colby jack with pepperoni inside, some landjagers, some beef and jalapeno sticks, and some garlic summer sausage. This is basically a grocery store. It's not a place that either makes cheese, nor sells what they make. They aggregate fine Wisconsin cheeses from all over the state for the convenient consumption of passerby's from Milwaukee. It worked for what we needed, and we bought a bunch of stuff: some blocks, some really good curds, and so on. Bring a cooler, because keeping cheese cold is ideal for it's flavor. We brought our Yeti, filled it up, and passed out pounds of the stuff when we got back to Kansas City. I threw a cheese curd party, and I think I might have needed to freeze the cheese harder, because they were good, but towards the end got a little melty; started seeping. Still, worth the stop! If you've not made it to a traditional shop of producer in Wisconsion around the Milwaukee area, this is an absolute superb alternative. They've done the work for you! I love stopping at road side cheese and sausage places because you never know what you will find so when I saw the huge cheese sign I got off the Hwy and stopped. The place has a a huge rat climbing to the top of the cheese sign and a huge cow looking into the road in front of the place. The place has a wide variety of specialty cheese and meats and other stuff with New Glarus beer. I was there looking for new/different items that I can't find in my local store and I did find lots of items but I was only going to fake two with me. My two items were breakfast meats, imagine that since I love breakfast. The apple cinnamon breakfast links were interesting so grabbed a package. Woah smoked bacon with jalapeño rub, that's a no brainer. I didn't get any cheese because we have plenty of great cheese locally. If you are on I90 just north of Madison, in DeForest you will find the Cheese Chalet. Great place to buy any number of the different Wisconsin cheeses. The cheese case has a number of cheddars from medium to sharp and aged from 1.5 years to 15 years, smoked cheeses, blue cheeses and so on. Note: don't forget to buy some Colby this is the truly Wisconsin cheese. While I am from Wisconsin, and I am a bit of a cheese snob; one thing I really like about this shop is the availability of Brick cheeses. For whatever reason, you won't see many brick cheeses in the twin cities sold by cheesemongers (think Surdyks, Whole Foods, Lunds & Byerlys). It's too bad because this is an under-appreciated style, yet here there are in multiple styles. This place is like Target. Stop in for a couple of things and you walk out with way more than you were expecting. I am happy to say I have about 5 months worth of cheese in my fridge now. :) Also to go along with your cheese there are sausages, and jams/Jellies and crackers to round out your shopping. if you are passing through stop in and support Wisconsin's dairy farmers, and get some cheese. On our way back from Minnesota to Tennessee, I picked this place out to check out as it was conveniently located and we wanted to make sure we got some cheese before we went back. Walking in it pretty much looks like a small grocery store, they had all things cheese related and more. They also sold meats which was interesting and other items. Onto the cheese! There were so many cheeses. There were different types of flavors, infused cheeses with garlic/bacon/chocolate, etc. It was a little overwhelming looking through all the cheese and selecting what we wanted to eat. But, it was great that the person that was helping with us let us take our time and choose what we wanted to sample. There were so many options, but we kept it to a few and looked for what appealed to us the most. We ended up getting the Applewood Smoked Garlic & Herb Gouda, the Bacon Muenster, and the Pesto Havarti. All the cheeses were great, the only regret that I had was that I wished that we bought more as we didn't stop by any other cheese spot and should have just finished all our cheese shopping there. I know you can order all the cheeses that they offer online, but it's a different experience to just be there and try out the cheese before you buy. I would not recommend the chocolate, but if you want to know what it tastes like, it's like chocolate ice cream except it doesn't melt.
