Driving from Lake Tahoe to Mammoth, we were lucky to stumble on this delicious restaurant along Highway 395. A few points: 1. This place has both indoor and outdoor seating. They are super dog friendly!!! 2. My husband had the Texas spudded potato and I had the beef brisket sandwich. The food was absolutely delicious!!! The brisket was tender with just the right amount of BBQ sauce! The pickles and onions brought out all the flavors of the meat. I never really thought of myself as a BBQ person, but this eatery changed my mind. 3. The restaurant is super cute. The outside is decorated with patio furniture and potted plants. 4. We happened upon this place for a late lunch. Our first visit but it won't be our last. We were greeted warmly when we arrived. With menus in hand we found a seat. We hadn't made a selection before I over heard there was a bear in the dumpster. We had to go check it out before getting serious about lunch. The menu selections sounded varied and tasty. I opted for bbq and selected the baby back ribs. Mr. S spied potato skins (his favorite) and I promised to share my ribs. There was many sides to choose from but I went with the traditional potato salad and cole slaw...and I'm glad I did. Our main dishes were both good, but the stars of the meal were the two sides. BEST potato salad ever in a restaurant and the cole slaw was a pleasant surprise too. I could just eat this homemade potato salad with a side of bbq sauce if nutrition wasn't a consideration! We have driven passed many times but never again. This will be our go-to stop for eats from now on when in the area! read more

Can't tell you how many times we've driven by; finally we stopped and were pleasantly surprised...service was excellent, nice shady table area outside, our pup was welcome and the food was delicious! We rode our bikes here from a Mill Canyon exploration. Friends recommended this place and it DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Indoor and outdoor seating. We were greeted by 2 friendly people out front. This establishment is CASH ONLY so bring your moolah or they have an atm inside for your convenience. We had the Mammoth trout Pilsner and it's really good. I had the pork and brisket 1/2 and 1/2 platter. Comes with two sides and has two choices in plate sizes/it was like 1/2 or full size. I had the half size and with two sides it's perfect. Lots of parking off to the side(enough for travel trailers for sure. Maybe even a big rig if you knew to stop in time!) bathrooms were clean and well stocked. Hubby had the hotdog/pulled pork platter and he loved it! Everything's homemade. Down to the ranch and French fries. Not to far away from the Coleville Koa where we are staying. We also drove our bikes to see and buy stuff from Dan(the silhouette and wind spinners)He's a super nice guy and was happy to buy his well made spinners. Picnic tables out front to accommodate larger groups. The spicy beans and Mac and cheese were yummo. Anyways. Definitely stop but check the days open. I think they are closed like M-W. Just don't! We went and had a combo platter. The coleslaw was ok, the meat was not good at all. Pork is sliced not pulled and the sauce tasted suspiciously like ketchup. We really wanted to like it as it is close the the KOA near us. If you have never had good BBQ, maybe this is edible. I did not speak to anyone about the food quality. As a matter of practice, I never would. I worked in kitchens and know what can happen. read more

Great little mom and pop restaurant we stopped into on the way back from Bodie. Glad we did. Has kind of a Scene from a National Lampoons Vacation movie from the outside. It too sure of it at first. There's a dog sleeping on the front porch. You know. Once you get inside...you know it's a great little place. Greeted immediately. Restaurant was very clean and decorated with odes to the locals. We were a family of 5, table was more than big enough. We all felt the need for burgers instead of actual BBQ, so I know...shame on us. We ALL enjoyed our food. The Mac and cheese is homemade and scrumptious. Our burgers were juicy and delicious. Buns held up. The patrons inside all seemed to know each other. A kind of Cheers type vibe. Very nice place. This is a great bbq place on the east side of hwy 395 in the little town of Walker. My family has been going there for years and we made the trek from Twain Harte CA, over the Sonora pass to go there for lunch on Father's Day. They have great bbq and a good draft beer selection. There were 5 of us and we got a nice socially distant table outside. I had the baby back ribs with cole slaw and potato salad. All was excellent. Also the service was excellent! My daughter got the smoked turkey with french fries. She let me steal a few of them and I have the say, they were some of the best I've had, so definitely getting those next time. Definitely worth stopping by if you are traveling through the area or want a nice lunch destination incorporated with a road trip. read more

The place has a unique charm about it and on a sunny day - their picnic benches are perfect for kicking back with some tasty BBQ. If you're in a rush you can get their BBQ portioned out to go, ideal for making some robust road sandwiches. The staff are always on it and their genuineness is always lovely to be around. MOTHERS DAY FAVORITE A perennial favorite for us when we travel up and down Highway 395 between Douglas County and the Eastern Sierra. Jeff Hinds takes personal care to create a little bit of Texas in Walker, California. My visiting brother and sister in law recently treated us to a bbq feast as an advance Mother's Day celebration for our ex-Texan Mom. Having tried most of the items on the menu, I suggested the sampler platter and half a smoked chicken. Wings and a flurry of side dishes. (Mac n cheese rocks!). A salad appeared briefly in front of Mom. Otherwise conversation was reduced to approving grunts with each mouthful. Everything was done to perfection. And best of all: Leftovers! The Texas spuds are a meal in its self and The burgers are 100% angus beef and one of my favorite burgers period . . Jeff's daughter Amanda keeps everyone on their toes and is a big part of the what makes it a pleasure to hang out. Out along the 395 highway between Carson City and Bishop there's not a whole lot to stop at for interesting food. Going thru some of the towns, you see fast food joints, so when we got into Walker, I said this seems like a quaint little town, wonder what there's to eat. We past the first food place Walker Burger and then pulled into this BBQ place. There's a smoker cooking meat right out front! My friend said this place is often over run with those biker types with those loud pipes and rowdy behavior. Not a good place to have a peaceful lunch. But this time it was all quiet with no motorcycles or bravado running amok. I liked the new looking picnic tables they had outside. I think the whole point of coming to a place like this is to eat outside, though there is indoor dining for the winter I think. This place is table service, as I first thought there was some window to go up to and order and they might call you number or something, but no, this is full table service. Menus were brought out and we helped ourselves to cups of water. There's a lot on the menu of BBQ to burgers and fries. I notice beef ribs on the menu ... my fave, but maybe not this time. Pork Ribs are St. Louis trimmed style. Most all kinds of BBQ smoked meat are available. Looking for a not too involved lunch we opted for the Bacon Cheeseburgers served with fries for $10.95. Next time I gotta try those ribs and beef ribs for sure! The burgers arrived in not much time as there seemed to be only one other party there at the time. Served in red plastic baskets, the burgers were large in diameter and had nice bacon and tomatoes peeking out between the toasted buns. The fries were of the shoestring variety, cooked golden brown. I hate underdone fries! The burger was very tasty and well put together, held together with a toothpick so you don't slop out all out the other side of the burger. Good touch! This was a very good burger that I'd recommend. Service was just fine and friendly. I'd say do stop in here at Mountain View BBQ in Walker as you tool along the 395.
