Pick up an adventure pass which gives you 24 hour access to park in the area including the Grassy Hollow visitors center which is where we went for snow play. I love this place. They have the best plants and flowers. I have had my flowers that I got there come back for the past 4 years. If you need Drano, clippers or bug spray they have it. Usual there no line and they very quick to help you pick out something or check you out. They don't run from their customers like Lowes or Home Depot. We drove to the Wrightwood area to spend a day playing in the snow and I am so glad we visited Mountain Hardware first. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable in pointing us to the right direction of the best places to visit for the day. They gave us a map and I know we would've been lost without them as a resource since I couldn't find clear information online. We bought our parking pass there as well. We didn't buy any hardware items from their store, but I browsed cute souvenirs and noticed a good variety of different things that are essential for visiting the snow. This is a great little hardware store. We like the wonderful customer service, and the staff always helps us find what we need whenever we're here. When a home repair is in order, Mountain Hardware has a really good selection. There's also some winter gear in the front of the store, and it seemed like they had some nice jackets, gloves, and scarves. We've gotten copies of keys here, items for general repairs, and my husband comes here whenever he needs a referral for a gardener or someone to trim the trees. The staff are friendly here and the prices seem fair, not one of those places that holds customers hostage and price gauges based having a monopoly or being the sole source in the supply and demand chain of items needed out in the boonies. They have a series of outhouses in the back area, and albeit, outhouses aren't the most appealing bathrooms, at least they have something, which is better than nothing, as a courtesy to visitors (as well as customers who make purchases) who come to the area. Some of the winter snow sports sleds and saucers seemed price on par to what you'd pay for at retain chain sporting good stores, so it's not like what you might expect where some other businesses in the same situation may charge double, triple or more. I feel the owners in that spirit are straight shooters and building long term reputations as a retailer that can be liked and trusted and ultimately be referred to by good reviews that new customers can come here confidently knowing it's a trustworthy, honest and reliable place to visit. read more

Is this place considered a hidden gem? If so am I ruining this secret? Don't care - everyone needs to know about Mountain Hardware! As an semi recent (kinda sorta) implant to Southern California, I never realized that snow was so easily accessible. After scouring some mom groups on Facebook I stumbled across Wrightwood and in the same sentence Mountain Hardware. A hardware store for snow? Absolutely! Mountain Hardware provides daily updates and photos via their Facebook page titled "Wrightwood Snowplay." Complete with pictures, road closure updates, recommendations, chain requirements, etc etc. I was in love with them before we even hit the road. As I pulled up to the Hardware store, you could see the buzz of snow searchers like myself around the store. I didn't really go to the store needing hardware supplies, I was scouting for a few snow items and boy did they deliver. Everything was so thoughtfully displayed making my life so freaking easy. Gloves? Got 'em, they have clearly marked boxes along the wall. Next up snow pants, snow bibs, boots, hats, beanies, sleds, legit everything! They even had snow jackets! The space was small but boy did they utilize every inch of it! Normally I would think that they would be annoyed by us, but everyone was so kind! The cashier kindly gave me the best tips on the best snow play areas and even provided me with a map that he highlighted the best spots and a trash bag as I left the store. NO DUDE IT BROKE on a small twig. Proceed to escalate to the "MGR" Well we don't do returns and will charge you +$20 for the "BETTER" model since I bought the "cheap one". Sorry $20 bucks for a cheaper than cheap piece of offshore plastic is not cheap at all, your bottom line is FAT FAT on those. All issues point to the buyer being at fault, blame, blame blame. MOUNTAIN FOLK, PLEASE. Uh wat? So you admit you sold a shoddy piece in the first place? Yea, fool me once, never twice. I will bring that "better model" from Amazon at $15.99 and not step foot into this tourist trap again. Don't get me started on the port o potties. Yuck... Mountain Hardware is fantastic. They were friendly and helpful. They had lots of clean bathrooms, even if they were porta-potties. They sold a rugged type of sledding disc that I'd never seen before. And best of all they showed us a great spot where we could take the gang to go play in the snow. We got lots of exercise, had tons of fun and came home exhausted and happy. Perfect! read more

Was able to get what we needed along with an adventure pass for $5 and a map of the area. What made this a great experience was Chris, who helped me at the register. We went up here on March 17th, the owners opened up shop before 8:30am to assist us. The workers were very nice and super helpful. They gave us directions to a great area for snow play and answered all our questions in a helpful and courteous manner. They also recommended a great pizza place in town! This is a great hardware store and/or winter gear store. From sleds, to mittens to maps and even the parking pass needed to ensure your car doesn't get a ticket while sledding. Yes, they have found a way to charge you for parking on Federal land. Isn't that what my taxes are for? Anyway, these guys are super nice, very helpful and don't inflate their prices 200% above market. The best part and what makes us loyal to this place is that every morning, the store surveys all the sledding sites and then posts conditions on their website, a sled hill snow report. They have simply taken it upon themselves to offer this service to us all. Parking is relatively easy, the workers are extremely helpful/friendly and they have just about anything you forgot at home and now need in order to not freeze. Happy sledding! read more

This place has most of what you'll need for some snow fun, but we must've dealt with the same man who got the 1-star reviews from others. Didn't get his name, but what poor customer service from this dude at the register. We came to get tire chains as it had just snowed that morning and we were going up to Angeles National Forest to hang out in the snow.He said he would not sell chains to us unless we were going skiing. We explained that we weren't going skiing but we were still going up to the Mountain High area and wanted them as a precaution. He asked us what size our tires were and we weren't 100% sure. (Were from LA and have literally never needed chains before.) We gave him the make and model of our car thinking it would help him determine what we needed and he slammed a book down at us (with tire sizes?) then said, "I can't help you." I understand that we should have known our tire size, but everyone who stops here is likely out of town and many of us are snow newbies. This didn't make us feel welcome at all. We ended up getting chains from the much friendlier guys at the tire shop across the street who told us exactly where to look to find our tire size. Thanks for nothing to this place!!! Very busy store. They sold us two sleds for $16 each, and after two trips down the hill one was already toast. We saw several similar sleds abandoned on surrounding roads and hills, so I don't believe we are the only ones with this issue. The staff was very nice and helpful. Directing us with a map to the local snow play places. As other yelpers have mentioned the bathrooms are port-a-potty style and not very clean. I had to coerce my four year old to use it, and we've been to similar potty places while camping. These were exceptionally dirty, hopefully other yelpers will help keep them clean by cleaning up after they are through. read more

Horrible service this morning from "Robin." I arrived right when they opened hoping to purchase tire chains. They told me to take a picture of the tire size. Once inside, I felt interrogated. Robin was very upset I was even there, her tone changed completely. Condescending comments like how did you get here, the 138 is closed and they're only letting residents up the mountain. I told her I was going to Mt. High to snowboard then she was even more snarky. She pretended to check on the tire chains in her book, and it completely appeared as if she lied about not having them. I'm all about supporting small businesses but these people clearly do not like out of towners, especially if their destination is Mt. High. Sorry Mountain Hardware, you were my #1 spot every time I visited Wrightwood but Robin completely changed how I feel about you guys. I'm a Family of 4 and I was very polite as I want to show my kids to be nice to everyone but, don't know what was bothering this woman this morning. read more
