not knowledge. the kids they have helping customers have no clue. not only do they never stock common stuff such as pipe fittings or other plumbing or electrical hardware but when they don't have it they don't know how to help you do a workaround. if your going to buy mul of the same thing and need it to be identical to each other, then don't even bother. tried to buy two 2" ABS end caps. they didn't have any, tried to get a 2" to a 1 1/2 " and put a 1 1/2 " end cap, dint have that either. hey Mills, you are supposed to order items when your low on quantity so that you have some always in stock not wait till you run out and make your customers drive to Home Depot just to get a $2 end cap. this never happened when it was Anderso's read more

The manager Kelly is rude and unprofessional. I went in for paint matching. I asked her to use 2 coats for a true match since I always paint 2 coats. She looked right at me then turned and put the sample in and the paint came out pink not tan. I said " that's why I asked you to use 2 coats on the sample". She informed me that that was the way they do it and called me a liar. Saying I painted 2 coats at home and didn't ask her to do it per my request. The icing on the cake is she tagged my debit card transaction so the bank would put a hold on it until I called in because it kept getting declined. Ken Anderson never would have allowed this shitty treatment of any customer let alone loyal ones of 24 yrs. Kelly should be fired for ruining this store. read more

The owner was the most unprofessional person my husband and I have ever met in 30 years. We purchased a buddy heater, have the receipt and only had it for 2 days. We were wrongly advised about the size it would heat, but the ignition on the device was defective. Sometimes it would work perfect and sometimes it took 20 times to ignite it. Because we could not duplicate the problem in the store, we were made out to be liars. Also when we told the owner your employee advised us wrongly of what to buy and they had the audacity to lie and say they never asked what we were using it for make that make since. That would be the first thing you'd ask a customer when buying a heater. So they gave us the run around and said if they returned it and it wasn't defective they wouldn't get there money back. Refused to return it and told us to call the manufacturer. The manufacturer told us a horse of a different color. They said she should of absolutely returned it no problem because they are a multi million dollar company and said the best way to get it back is go through our bank which we did and got our funds returned. We will never shop there again, the owner was on a complete power trip, she and her employees lied and belittled us all for a 100 heater and all we wanted was our money back after having it for only 2 days and in desperate need to find something else to keep our family warm. I participated in the AQMD gas for battery exchange program and it was so bizarre and more complicated than it needed to be. I went into the store. They told me to walk all the way out to their shop in the back because they would help me there. I waited there for about 5-6 mins then some guy takes 2 seconds looks at my blower then tells me to go back to the shop. I go back to the main shop wait there about 5 mins. The manager (I guess) has me fill out some online thing for Sthil, back to the register I pay then then Im told to go.back out to the shop to pick up my blower.. Silly the lawn mower place in Hesperia took 5 mins total in and out. read more

When you are the only game in town you can get away with terrible customer service!! I purchased then attempted to return a new, unused chainsaw, the same day I bought it. The gal at the register proceeded to make a huge scene pulling out all the contents, noting that the gloves had a few specks of grass on them ... Then she opened the gas tank and oil tanks which to that point had never been opened, sniffs and states the saw was used - it smelled of gas. I just love being called a liar. Go to this store if you are desperate - but don't expect them to play fair and treat you as a customer who's business they should want to earn and respect!! Update... Learned from the factory rep that the equipment is gassed and test fired prior to shipping... Which explains the gas smell. read more

This is what happens when there's no competition. The next closest hardware store is Home Depot, 19 miles away, and frankly, I go there rather than here, which is just down the street from me. The prices are just crazy high. A tube of adhesive that goes for $3 at HD goes for $8 here. Seriously? All their prices are roughly the same markup. They're closed Sundays. The staff ranges from friendly to indifferent, but they're usually short staffed, so be prepared to wait a good while if you have one person in front of you...if there's two, take a nap. Even with gas prices the way they are, I'm happy to drive nearly an hour away so I don't have to deal with this foolishness. Don't bother. read more

True Value Hardware, great store, great selection, great staff .. mostly great prices, some things are probably cheaper elsewhere. For big projects you may need to drive further to Home Depot but for everyday things they have quite a bit here and the staff is very knowledgeable and friendly. We are lucky to have this store close to home. read more

We really wanted to support our local small businesses at this time. However, we were very disappointed in the level of service availability and merchandise choices at Mills Hardware. This is a hardware store in our local community, and we were in need of a basic portable home tool kit and a basic pair of wire cutters. Neither was available. Not only were these items not stocked, we were told that Walmart would be the best place to find these items. That is exactly what we were trying to avoid. Big corporations do not need more business at this time, but we were thinking our local small businesses would. We were surprised to learn that a basic tool kit was not something considered hardware store worthy. Another issue was the staffing. They were very busy, as this was on a Saturday morning, but there was not adequate floor coverage to assist customers. The employees were mostly employed at the registers. I realize checking our in a timely manner is important to customers,, but so is the availability of employees to answer questions and assist. This is not a criticism of the employees, as they were doing the best they could, but rather a management/owner issue..This was a wasted trip into our town, and we will not be returning any time soon. read more

Very quick to sell me merchandise but terrible on returns. I specifically asked what the policy was prior to purchase as I was not sure if it would be the right product. In this case it was not. I went back on Sunday to find them closed. I went back again Monday and the checker treated me like a un-desirable. She then went and got the manager. This is over a purchase under $20. The manager then spent more time reviewing the policy. They finally gave me back all of my purchase price. This is a local merchant and is one I plan to never patronize again. Terrible customer service and terrible return policy. Home Depot or Lowes would never have treated me that way and this small local merchant will wonder why no one shops there. First things first, three weeks ago I called Mills Hardware to reserve a tractor for today. I was quoted a a $90 round trip delivery charge on top of the rental of the tractor. I gave them my address and they confirmed that day it would only be the $90 dollars. I went in this morning and confirmed the rental for today and asked if it was available early and the previous renter brought it back while I was there. They had to to some maintenance first but said it would be done around noon to deliver. At 1pm they finally call me and say it's good to go, I paid for it over the phone which was $655 with delivery and they said they would be in there way. I get a call after my card was charge maybe 10 minutes later and they said that they have to charge another $110 to deliver because they got the address messed up and the person who quoted me twice is wrong. I talk to one of the owners and the was very rude and did nothing to better the situation. This hardware store defiantly took a turn for the worst once the mills took over. STAY AWAY!!!!!!! Just moved here and knew the prices were high but wanted to support the local community. WHAT A MISTAKE. I took my chain saw in to have the blade sharpened. This saw was almost new only used a few times. So I took it in on a Friday and got told it would be ready saturday well when saturday came it was not ready and was told they would call me. Never got a call & by Monday I called them they said it would be done Tuesday to make a libg story short I didn't get it back untill Thursday they scorched the chain so bad it will need to be replaced and the plate that hold the tension screw was broken so I can't even use the saw. Took it back in & got told "we didn't do that" and when I told him it was not like this when I dropped it it off I was told I was "full of shit" and that I'd didn't know what I was doing & probably broke the plate my self. Then said "you have to be smarter then the things your working with" I didn't say a word just walked out other wise I'd done something or said something that might have got law enforcement involved. I sat out side and talked to others coming in & out of the store. Met a nice guy who had bought a welders mask brand new & when he got it home it was broke. He told me he tried to return it with no luck and was given the same line about it was fine when it left the store & he must have broke it or didn't know how to use it properly. So spend the money go to lows or home Depot. If I had $10 to hand everyone to go some place other then this store it would be worth EVERY PENNY read more

Good little neighborhood hardware store. They are always well stocked with whatever I need. Good prices and service as well.

We rented a tractor for 24 hours. We were charged $300.00 for the 24 hour period, plus $350.00 deposit and $90.00 delivery charge. When I reserved the tractor a week prior, I asked about all charges. I was quoted the above. Two days after the tractor was picked up, which they were late in picking it up, I went into the store to receive my deposit back. There was an additional $13.13 charge subtracted from my deposit. I asked what this charge was for. The gentleman, I think his name was Christopher, told me that I went over the 8 hours permitted to use the tractor. I said, that did not make any sense. Either I am renting the tractor for 24 hours or 8 hours. He stated that he asked the employees who delivered the tractor to our house and picked it up if they told me that we could only use the tractor for 8 hours without additional charges and both employees stated they did. My husband and I emphatically deny anyone told us about the 8 hour limit. I asked the gentleman to show me where on the contact it stated that we can only use a tractor for 8 hours even though we are renting it for 24 hours. He could not locate it in the contract. I told him that I was angry. He threw my receipt down on the desk in front of me and I swiped my hand to keep it from hitting me in the face. Then he told me not to throw things. I told him to show me where it is written about the 8 hour rule and I will apologize, close my mouth, and leave the store. He then stated it was a verbal agreement. I lost it! Either it is a written contract or a verbal contract - Not both!! I asked for the owner's name and phone number. I left two messages, the day of the incident and the next day. Guess what? Evidently, the owner does not know how to return phone calls. But she sure trained her people to rip people off!!!!!! read more

They have quality products and are very nice. Some stuff is quite a bit more expensive but you pay for convenience. Some stuff is actually cheaper than Home Depot. Never had a problem with a return. All in all I am glad they are there and use them a lot. read more

Customer service is terrible here. Never had this problem when it was Andersons. Since it became Mills everything has gone down hill, especially the rental yard. Looks like a junk yard back there. Some of that is the stuff they try and rent to you! The staff have little to no knowledge of the equipment. In most cases where you might need to pick up a few things, its a convenient "mom and pop" store I don't mind paying more for. But BEWARE of the lack of experience in the rental yard when renting heavy equipment! The first time I rented a tractor they insisted on securing the trailer to my hitch to insure it was connected properly. Shame on me for not insisting myself! As they drove the tractor on the trailer, it flew off the hitch... narrowly missing my 5 year old son. The last time I rented a tractor, I noticed the front tires appeared low. I had asked what the tire pressure was, NOT one worker knew. Then of course, as I was using the tractor, the tire went flat and immediately lost the bead, then rolled off the rim. The rim was damaged. I called immedialty and they sent out a mechanic with a new tire and rim. I asked him the same question... What is the tire pressure? He did not know either. He installed the new rim and tire and left. My first load using the repaired tractor, I noticed the tire seemed low. I checked the tire pressure and it had 7 lbs. I learned they should have 28 to 35 lbs. I filled up the tire myself and called to inform them. Long story short... My $300 deposit was kept for repairs to the damage to the rim. The girls at the store where very stern about the responsibility being left up to me. The manager herself stated I should have recognized the low tire myself and informed the workers. As I returned the tractor to the rental yard, I had asked what the maintenance schedule was. For example a Pre Trip for every rental. The worker stated that the customer needs to look it over and record any abnormalities they see. Cosmetic damage he said. I would not even think to pull out my tire pressure gauge, or a red rag to check the oil or transmission. Or ensure the radiator is topped off with fluid, or all the zerk fittings have been greased and even check for oil leaks... If you rent here, I highly reccomend you do! Because they wont... . No matter how much I stated that I did recognize the low tire, the fine print in the contract prevails in their book. And the worst thing is, they seemed to enjoy passing on that information...ABSOLUTELY NO CUSTOMER SERVICE! At least no one was hurt.... RENT FROM JOHNSON OR UNITED RENTALS! Its worth the extra $20. read more

Yes I've had my share of up and downs at this store ,and yes you can expect them to be more stern with their return policy and yes they do mark up quite a bit at times but not everything and not always . Common its not home depot and its not fair to compare with them this store is perfect for Phelan it has saved me on numerous occasions and I disagree with other comments I've read ,their stuff is not poor quality its comparable or even better quality at times, and the staff has always been helpful and for sure more accessible than HD.I would give them a five if they were to open on Sundays I would suggest close at 6pm instead of 7pm use those hours to open Sundays 9-2. I for one am glad we have them and will keep supporting them in a smart way. read more

worst store I have ever been to I got a 1/2 drill from there and the chuck was no good brought it back the next day and lee the store manager said she needed to test it like she is a machinist now right ok she took it back to the guy in the yard that you can tell did not make it past 3rd grade and he said well it looks ok to me and now I have a piece of shit drill that I payed $50 for what happen to the days when the customer is always right never again will I shop there................... . read more
