Complete scam artists and, in my case, negligently criminal. Claimed to fix my bike and it almost killed me while driving away from the shop. They refused to take responsibility. I've fallen a couple times before and can admit I was at fault those times. But just after I drove away, the bike started accelerating on its own right as I pressed the front brake. It was like a rug was pulled out from underneath me. Literally feet from their shop where they supposedly "fixed" it. I'm not religious, but I thank god every day I hadn't gotten to the Wburg bridge yet (and that there were no cars around). You can see the slide marks and my bike in the photos. Don't make the same mistake I did. I saw the negative reviews and thought, "well idk where else to go with an older bike" and "maybe I'll get lucky." Think about how bad these reviews really are. Besides Val completely making up BS correspondence (see another user's review about trying to prove she sent an estimate via email with a handwritten note) and charges (see any bad review), the majority of reviews that aren't simple maintenance for new bikes/scooters involve her upcharging for the service, making the bike worse off than it was when it came in, and/or (in my case) endangering the rider. If you want to pay a pretty penny for maintenance on your new sportster, sure - talk to Val. But if your bike is more than 5 years old and requires anything more than standard maintenance, I'd steer clear unless you like being harassed or even potentially killed (and then blamed for their mistake). read more

I was pleasantly surprised with how honest and fast the shop was with my repair. I have a Vespa GTS 300 with 24,000 miles on it and it would not start. After ruling out the usual problems, they found that the compression was low in the engine. I was almost willing to scrap the Vespa I love, because it would have cost a lot to rebuild the engine. I agreed to their estimate because I wanted to keep using it. The next day, the Vespa was ready and they told me all they had to do was adjust the valves. Robot on Scooterwest/Vespa Motorsport recommends valve adjustments every 12,000 miles on the older GTs. I never did it, so that makes sense. Even though I agreed to their initial estimate, I was only charged for 2 hours of service and a needed spark plug. This included the diagnostic and repair time! This is not the first time they found a minor manifestation of a major problem. A couple years ago my engine light was on and the bike was sounding terrible. Another shop said I needed a new computer and that they couldn't do it. I rode it slowly to Motorgrrl and all it needed was an O2 sensor. One hr labor and the part on the same day saved me a lot of money. I always recommend this shop to all my Vespa buddies. read more

I worked at a motorcycle race shop for 7 years and have a customized bike so I am very particular about mechanical work. The crew at Motorgrrl has gone above and beyond and solved tricky problems. This isn't the first time. I took my Ducati in because it was loosing power and running roughly. They isolated the problem and reached out to the dealership to get a special tool to confirm the diagnosis. When it wasn't available they modified a conventional gauge to get the reading they needed. I had the misfortune of dropping my scooter of at this place a few years ago for a tune-up. You can see the video I made of my broken scooter when you Google "MotorGrrl." Someone at MotorGrrl took down our video review we posted on Facebook. After dropping my scooter off for a simple tune-up, it took Val and her mechanics over a month to "fix" the problem. The scooter was in terrible condition when I picked it up and they tried selling me unneeded parts to fix the new damage. I took the scooter to Brooklyn Moto and got it fixed for under $100, and it turned out that the previous mechanic had simply failed to screw on an engine cap. The scooter started working like new again. All in all, MotorGrrl was THE WORST place I have ever taken my scooter to get serviced. I've been using Scooter Bottega in Brooklyn for the past few years and Robbie and his guys are fantastic, reliable, and won't rip you off. You can also pick up your scooter after hours if you can't make it there during business hours. read more

So, I hopped on my motorcycle one day and the battery was dead. I called around to a couple of shops near where my motorcycle was, and the one closest to it (without an Uber), also had the battery. They were about $10 more expensive than another shop, but they were closer to my powerless bike, so I thought, "That sucks, but it's only $10, right?"...... little did I know. On top of paying for the battery, they also charged me: * a $20 fee for putting acid in it and topping off the charge, which in my 30+ years of riding motorcycles, I've NEVER seen. EVERY other motorcycle shop I've EVER been to, sells you the battery ready-to-go, price inclusive. If they (the other shops I've been to over the past 3 decades) rolled that service into the price of the battery before telling me what the battery costs, that's fine....I, like most people, am a "WHAT'S-THE-OUT-THE-DOOR-PRICE?" kind of guy. And to be fair, they (MotorGrrl) did tell me about this charge over the phone, but I still don't agree with it. I don't like finding out that a shop sells the battery (itself) for close to the same price as other places (who are providing a fully-functioning battery), but then I have to pay extra, at this shop, for the battery to actually work. This is the same as you going to get new tires, and the tech puts the new tires on the rims and then says, "Oh....you wanted air in those?....Oh, then I'm going to have to charge you extra if you want a functional tire." Or going to a supermarket, buying a bunch of groceries, and then having the clerk be like, "Oh...you want to carry these groceries home?...I'm going to have to charge you for shopping bags." Who does that?!... New tires come with air in them, batteries come with acid and fully charged, and groceries come with shopping bags...all price-inclusive. ALSO, they charged me: * an 8% "Tech Supplies" fee. This was not mentioned to me on the phone, but in all fairness, as the gentleman behind the desk pointed out, when you call in looking to purchase (and then pick up) something, they usually email a provisional receipt with all taxes and fees before you purchase/show up, so you know exactly what the FINAL, OUT-THE-DOOR-PRICE is going to be. He didn't do that this time because I was headed over almost immediately after getting off the phone with him to pick up the battery, so while he did mention the $20.00 Acid/Charge fee, I know I wasn't told about the "Tech Supplies" fee over the phone because, when I picked up the battery, and handed him my credit card, he told me what the total was and, being quick with math in my head, I knew that the total he was now giving was higher than I'd calculated when we were on the phone. When I looked at the receipt, and saw the additional "Tech Supplies" fee, I asked what that was, I was told that it went to cover the cost of their rags, shop supplies, office supplies and whatnot. Umm...what?...has ANYBODY, EVER seen this someplace else? When I buy something at Amazon, or anywhere else, they don't charge me the full price of the item, and then tack on an additional charge to cover every toilet flush in their warehouse in Poughkeepsie. All of those business costs are factored into the price of their products. So, for those of you who aren't good at Math: You're going to pay an 8.875% NY Sales Tax... AND... an ADDITIONAL 8% "Tech Supplies" Tax/Fee. That's a 16.875% TAX on your order... There is a stipulation on the receipt that the "Tech Supplies" fee caps out at $25.00, but why am I having to pay that in the first place? True, I was in a bind, and needed the battery, and they did have it in stock, hence the 3 Stars (meaning that a motorcycle shop should be decently stocked to be considered at least average). Having said that, the $20 charge for putting acid in the battery (when other shops include it in the price of the battery), and the "Tech Supplies" fee on top of that, made me fee like Clark Griswold in the movie "Vacation", when he had to pay $500 for a tow and 4 wobbly tires...true, he didn't have a lot of other options at the time given that his vehicle, too, was broken down/immobile, but I, like him, didn't appreciate the price-gouging (IMO) cost of the solution to my problem. The NET-NET is: 1) True, I agreed to the $10.00 higher battery price (making it 10% more expensive than their nearest competitor). And I agreed, reluctantly, to the $20.00 Acid charge, bringing it up to 30% more expensive (ouch!). But, then the undiscussed "Tech Supplies" fee made it almost 40% more expensive than their nearest competitor (yikes!). 2) True, they did have the battery in stock. But, any shop worth their salt should have basic necessities like batteries, on hand (it's not like batteries are special-order engine parts). 3) They seem like a very nice, popular shop, but if you patronize them for the first time...GET A WRITTEN ESTIMATE, OF ALL TAXES/FEES, BEFORE YOU MOVE FORWARD, so you can compare the TRUE, OUT-THE-DOOR-PRICE before purchasing. read more

I garaged my bike here for about a year while living in Greenpoint. Great facility with lots of tools available for members to use. (I never had their mechanics do any work on my bike, so I can't speak to the repair shop). Easy entry/exit, but with tons of security -- cameras, retracting gate, etc. And I'd usually see one of the friendly staff there. Convenient, too, to have inspections available. Well worth the price of membership to have a place to wrench and be sure it's not gonna get ticketed or knocked over. Fun place to show your gearhead friends, too. read more

This is from an incident that extended from May-Aug of 2021. My bike was hit while parked at night (29 May), and so I dropped it off at the shop. Couple days later after the holiday weekend, I got an email saying they got the bike + keys that I left, and they'll holler back about the next steps. (1 Jun) 10 Jun, I messaged asking for an update. 16 Jun, I messaged asking for an update. Got a response that day, asking for the makes of some aftermarket parts that will need to be added (exhaust, mirror, frame sliders) - I reply minutes later. 17 Jun, some back and forth about why those needed to by added to the estimate, as I just wanted the bike to work, I didn't care about cosmetics. 12 Jul, I messaged : It is nearing a month and a half without even a quote on my bike. Forgetting the small things (mirrors, exhaust) can I please have this expedited to know what I'm dealing with. Thanks. No response. 2 August, I am on a job (painting). Val calls me, saying "we don't hear from you, we are liable to start charging rent" and I said I haven't received an estimate. She is insistent that I had. "I am calling you after hours to talk to you" she says. Ok, weird comment. Whatever. I tell her I need to finish my job and we'd talk the next day. 3 August, I get a wild estimate for $3358.49 I email them: Please understand that this communication is coming from a place of frustration as I had asked for a quote early June, had not received one, asked mid-July for an update, again had not received one, and then was called yesterday insisting that I had and that I would be charged rent. - I am unsure what to do about the bike as I am struggling to pay rent in this pandemic. Next day, I get what seemed to be a butt-dial, I hear Val telling AJ about our correspondence, "Ungh, ungh, *grunts, you can't charge me rent" she said mocking me in a ridiculous tone. "I don't know who checked that email...This is why you gotta stay on top of the emails, AJ - was it an insurance, this is insurance?" I stayed on the phone listening until they started talking about what snacks they had in the fridge. They call me back, much more pleasant tone, and I almost laughed. "It's been 2 months, you got an estimate.." I never got it until 3 August. I tell them please, just take the title. They call, I ignore, and email saying I am keeping a clear record of events. I tell them to "Please go ahead and charge me for the month of August so I can have time to figure how to get rid of the bike as it seems to be my only option" Val emails, saying she'll take over the title. Within 12 hrs I find a buyer, he comes to look at it, he motions that he'll take the bike, Val says "just so you know, it's hydro locked, etc" and is sure to tell him twice. While I'm there, I tell her to prove to me that she sent the estimate. Val pulls up a piece of paper with dates written in pen. I'm not buying it. She says "we switched systems, we couldn't get in touch.. It might not come up" on the computer - She says she'll call quickbooks to see if they can get a copy of the estimate. I say go ahead, I'll wait. 10-15 minutes..she says "even if we can't get a copy of it, we still gotta charge you rent" - they can't show me what they did not send. In the end, she said if I didn't pay the rent, "the bike's gonna stay here forever" I say this is not how you do business. I said "why in 2 months would I leave my only vehicle with you if I had the estimate" she said "it baffles me!" - I am a working artist (painter, photographer) and relied on my bike to get to my gigs. I've been going to them since the previous Autumn, always paid in full on time. She asked why I didn't get in touch with them besides email. Well, in the pandemic, I've been struggling with work, death of loved-ones, gradschool...but I don't need to explain to her, I say "It's not my job" - In the end she has me pay 1 month rent (just over $100) which seems more symbolic than anything. Anyways. Shame for a shop that I've defended, told people about, and was recommended by a friend (who replied, I can't believe they are being so unreasonable) Anyways. Go somewhere else. read more

Got in touch with Val recently. I just received shipment of a rear suspension and needed it on asap before I got on a trip. She was more than accommodating. "Stop by anytime!" she said. So I randomly dropped by on a Tuesday afternoon and she got me right in with one of her mechanics. Val also let me know how much they charge an hour and that I was welcome to hang out and hover about as they got to work, which I did. In fact, they even let me loosen and tighten some bolts, which I was more than happy to as I like to be able to learn about my bike where possible. All in all a wonderful experience. I live in Staten Island and park on the street, but store my bike during the winter. This year I needed a space where I could work on the bike, and seeing as I know just enough about wrenching to get myself into trouble, I wanted to find a place where I would have access to a lift, tools, and technical support. I decided to go with Motorgrrl. Val really took me under her wing and helped me with some big projects, like replacing my mechanical seal, and was readily available while I was completing other other maintenance projects like cleaning and syncing my carbs, replacing and adjusting my back brake, bleeding my brake system, adjusting my valve clearance, replacing my broken throttle and speedo cables, etc. There's a cost to everything, but you get what you pay for and every dollar I spent at Motorgrrl was one well spent. I got a lot of individual attention and care from Val, Tony and all the staff. My bike is super happy and ready for the season. IF YOU LIKE DRAMA AND DIFFICULT PEOPLE THIS IS THE PLACE!! I showed up at 1pm to drop off a friend's bike (the door said their hours were 9-6pm) but the door was locked. I knocked for awhile until the owner opened the door eating a sandwich saying they were closed. I asked if she could just take the keys. She continued to shove her sandwich in her mouth and said, "my friend, people have to eat". I laughed because I thought she was kidding. She spent more time eating in front of me explaining why I couldn't hand her the keys that she could have just taken the keys! She was so absurdly ridiculous and arrogant I had to leave. We found a parking garage on Kent and 3rd street for the SAME price. I can't speak for anyone else there but the owner ruined the reputation of the place for me. read more

After riding around and viewing a bunch of shops I stopped by Motor Grrl and thought the clean garage spoke volumes. I met Tony and asked if he had time for an oil change and inspection. He managed to get me in quickly and after I came back from lunch my bike was ready just as he said it would be. The inspection was quick and painless and it was a pleasure to bring my bike there. I mentioned my brakes were squeaking after the inspection and Tony then took time out to clean my calipers for no extra charge - worked like a charm. Overall, it was a great experience. I started parking my new bike here a couple of months ago after my other motorcycle was stolen out of my private garage in Greenpoint. I've been in and out of here quite a few times previously for minor things like inspections and purchasing parts to do my own oil changes. Tony even took a lot of time to discuss aftermarket parts for my Ducati Monster, even though I wasn't exactly in the market to buy any of them yet. They've always treated me fairly and I've found them to be nothing but helpful and very nice. Now that I'm parking there, I absolutely love the sense of community. There is always someone there in the morning when I grab my bike to head to work. I can't remember his name, but one of the mechanics always offers to check my tire pressure before I head out. He's also offered to back my bike out for me and other small things that are really helpful and completely unnecessary little added things that make their customer service far superior to other shops I've been to. Everyone seems to keep their spaces well maintained and everyone is respectful of other people's property. I think it's really helpful that they stock a lot of things that a local auto parts store or other motorcycle garages don't have the room for. Val plans great group rides for her customers and has many years of experience in both riding and working on bikes. I love her passion and cheerfulness. Great spot. read more

Wouldn't even recommend this place to an enemy. They tried to take advantage of me in a desperate situation, charging 250$ just to diagnose a simple electrical problem. When I questioned why the rate was so high just to diagnose this issue (I have been riding for years, have several mechanic friends who all have validated that this wouldn't ever take more than one hour to diagnose) the lady became defensive and nasty. I ended up taking the bike to Brooklyn Moto where they diagnosed the issue for less than half the price and quickly fixed the issue, not to mention everyone at Brooklyn moto was friendly and a pleasure to deal with. I drive a vintage vespa, and Jeff and AJ have loved and cared for it as much as I do (and I love it A LOT!!). I've gone to MotorGrrl in a pinch with a flat, and when I've done upgrades to my vespa. The amount of time they take to make sure the upgrades we were doing were right for my vespa was amazing and when I drove away, I was nothing but smiles. One of the best aspects of MotorGrrl is the community garage setting and the classes and other events they hold, so you don't even need a broken bike to have a reason to go! The couple of classes and 1-on-1 sessions I've taken have given me the confidence to do small fixes and mods myself, I can't wait until it's safe to go back for more. read more

I made a reservation on their website for an inspection on my new bike. When I arrived promptly at 10am, I was told that there's no one available to take a look. However, the woman in the office said she could do it, reluctantly. Why even have an online reservation system? Besides this, she was laughably rude and extremely unfriendly. My bike's back break wasn't working so she promptly failed me and walked away. Understandable, but why not offer the garage's services? She could have made some money fixing my light, although I probably would have told her I was going elsewhere due to her attitude. Going to be looking for a garage with real human beings, not rude and condescending pricks. read more

MotorGrrl totally saved my ass when I absentmindedly filled my tank with diesel fuel (lol WHOOPS). I felt like a total dumbass, but Val assured me that this sort of thing happens more often than one would expect (this is important -- a lot of shops would have seen a woman with a motorcycle make a mistake like that and chalk it up to being typical. MotorGrrl is a hub that encourages women riders, so you won't get any of that snide patronizing here.) She got it running by the next business day for a price I could swallow. She recommended some extra minor tune ups but didn't push it when I told her I was light. Came in again on a busy weekend to get them taken care of, and she had someone see me right away. She personally responded to my emails in a timely manner. There are a lot of bad reviews on here, but I can't see it. MotorGrrl has been in business for 12 years and operates out of a large space. You can't do that if you're dishing out bad business, this city is too unforgiving for that. read more

I read the bad reviews but I needed to get inspected and thought that I might give them a shot anyways. I always read reviews with a grain of salt. She told me that my front fork was leaking oil (true but not to my knowledge a deal breaker for inspections) and that my rear brake was loose. I tightened the rear drum brake with the thumb adjuster and asked to be inspected again. While I waited I looked up the inspection vehicle code online which states clearly that "A leaking shock absorber or MacPherson strut is not cause for rejection." This can be found at:http://dmv.ny.gov/forms/cr79.pdf on page 42. I calmly and politely tried to reason with another mechanic but he would not be reasoned with. I immediately took my bike to Triborough where I passed inspection without any issues. read more

Oh Motorgrrl. I wanted to like you. But jeeeeze. Dropped bike off Friday, no word till Tuesday at which point I'm charged $120 for a half installed crash guard and poorly installed mirrors. The crash guard I had to take off myself because having it half installed had it falling against my front fender. So charged for 120 minutes of work for something I left 4 days ago and for something I had to remove. This was the second time I tried them out after they couldn't switch a headlight out. I guess I should've learned my lesson. Avoid. Oh, but think you'll go to Triborough because they're close by? Yeah, that guy sucks too. So don't feel bad, Motorgrrl, you're not the only shitty motorcycle shop in the area. read more
