Love the concept of a sushi burrito! Make sure you get one of the pre-made combos. It's just easier than trying to figure out yourself what ingredients taste good together. However...if you're trying to get a bowl, I'd head to the Bento-Ria up by Broadway. Overall motomaki is a trendy and unique restaurant with very fresh ingredients and quick service. I'll satisfy your sushi craving instantaneously. Try and wash it down with a ramune! read more

Super yummy! This is the second time I've been here and I've not been disappointed. It's similar to a chipotle where you stand in line to order, and can either get it bagged up to go or eat there at a little booth or table. This time I ordered the shrimp tempura roll (roll as in a sushi burrito) and really loved it, the tempura gave an excellent crunch and the California mix in it gave it a nice sushi taste. The roll was a little hard to eat in my opinion, the dried seaweed paper tended to break up and fall apart, but nonetheless good! I just don't think this is something you could really eat on the go, it'd be messy!! I've had a bowl from Motomaki before and that was also excellent, but once again easier to eat when seated and when you've got time. The service is good, you really only interact with one or two people but they're generally quick and friendly. If you're in a rush I'd recommend ordering over the phone or online ahead of time, they get pretty busy at night! This will be my new place to go when wanting sushi-like food. read more

Motomaki - Shrimp tempura roll with ginger on the side - Japanese Near Me - Boulder, Colorado

Dropped in to the local Motomaki and was delightfully surprised with a yummy meal! My Island Tuna Poke bowl was really delicious and healthy. The meat was tender, and I dipped it in soy with wasabi on the side, and it was great! With a nibble of ginger between bites. Will definitely be back. read more

I first tried this place a few months back, but happened to return for lunch yesterday. The reason was because a close friend moved back here to Colorado from San Diego. He asked me if I knew of any new restaurants since his 4-5 year departure. I never got around to a review back then, but here I am now. I am highly satisfied! In fact, the food was even better then I remembered. Since he was out on the East coast, I figured he would know about this trend, being a sushi burrito. He had never heard of it, but was eager to accompany me. I ordereed the Nacho Tuna and the Kalbi ones. He ordered the seared tuna, but over greens, since he was on a low carb diet [I eventually got him to try my nacho tuna to at least get the experience ;)]. They come out to you after being handmade and presented fairly nicely. The basic premise of the food is that it is sushi rolled up into a burrito shape with seaweed or soy paper. You also have the option to make your own, with your choice of veggies, which proteins, type of rice and sauces. The ones I ordered were so delicious! I seriously was just enjoying the food so much that both of my orders were gone within a matter of minutes! I really like this place and how pretty healthy it is also to eat here. I highly recommend this place to anyone in the area, or if you have never had a sushi burrito! read more

Yay, another great fast casual place comes to Boulder! This one is a new venture by the owners of Hapa sushi, and while it's still working out some early kinks, we thoroughly enjoyed it and plan to be back. There are plenty of vegan options available here, but it took some detective work to figure it out, as the menu is not currently labeled (this may be changing in the future). We ended up ordering the tofu vegetable roll (make sure to sub out the jalapeno cilantro aioli for a vegan version; we went with the poke and that was super-good), then my husband and I each did some make-your-own maki. I think the combo I chose was particularly great: avocado, cucumber, cilantro, mango salsa, and yuzu dressing. At the moment, the make-your-own rolls are about half the size of the ones already on the menu, though the staff made it sound like this may change. Half of a big roll and one small one was enough food for me, while my husband had 2 small rolls and half a big one. read more

Ahhhhhmazing. Fresh and really balanced bowls!! Flavors were right on point, not too much not too little. We both had pre "designed" bowls and they were perfect. read more

Motomaki - Eggplant ... Delicious and filling. - Japanese Near Me - Boulder, Colorado

The food here is decent. The service is typical: college-kid-hipster-millennial snotty attitude. A little pricey but not overly so. The wraps are pretty good. I had tuna, which wasn't a great cut but not bad for the price. I just wish they'd wrap a little better so you can dip in the soy/wasabi without the thing falling apart. My wife got the eggplant roll, which had a surprise of being way spicy without much notice given about that. Might be good to let people know you're recipe includes "bathing in Sriracha". So if you're in the mood for mid priced "Japanese" food with an attitude, you'll fill your belly and not necessarily walk away completely enraged. read more

Very friendly staff. The food wasn't bad either. Good for a quick bite. The portions are excellent too. I would highly recommend this place!

Since I was there the first time, I've been back on several occasions. I can't stop! I keep ordering the shrimp tempura sushi burrito or the bowl. I probably should try something else but why?! It's that good! read more

I honestly was not sure if their combos would be good, but I am finding myself a week later having a little craving. Got the bowl with salmon, asparagus and bacon. Super good. Would definitely have that same thing again! Great lunch place. *update 9/30 - apparently if their ONE iPad is broken (which it is today) then the entire online ordering system does not work and there is no way for them to place an order in advance even when I called. Really? You seriously have no backup plan if your precious iPad goes down? read more

Absolutely deplorable customer service. The staff was more concerned about stocking items versus trying to help a first time customer. I did not understand the menu and I had to ask for help repeated times and was completely ignored. There were plenty of staff members sitting around talking but no one really seem to care about attending to a confused customer that was asking for help. Obviously going in 20 minutes before closing was a huge mistake, oops my bad. read more

If I were to be particular, I'd score this place a high 4-4.6. The food here is always consistent and the portion size is great for the price. The yellow tail and fresh fish taste as good as the best sushi house in town. They're kimchi rivals the best around, while keeping its integrity. The only thing I didn't like on my bowl were the bean sprouts, next time I'll make my own bowl. The atmosphere is more casual; friendly to the college kid, young parent, or older folks. The restaurant is clean and offers local drinks. This place rocks! read more

Jiro would shed a tear... I had a yearning for sushi and had been curious ever since I saw them starting construction. I am by no means a sushi snob, but this place is an absolute disgrace to sushi. It takes every ounce of precision and delicacy, just mashes it was cilantro-siriracha garlic aoli. This place is one (tiny) step away from pouring nacho cheese all over a roll (sorry Motomaki, I already own the rights). That being said, I give it 2 stars because their Shrimp Tempura "ALL THE THINGS!!!" sushi-rito was aaaaactually kinda good. Just don't call it sushi. read more

Came here late one night and discovered that this is a new restaurant to Boulder in the 29th Street plaza area. Knowing nothing about this place, we went in and ordered at the counter. I ordered a "salmon poke" bowl and my bf ordered a make-your-own-maki roll. Note that anything can be turned into a maki (sushirrito type thing) or a bowl. We spoke with the girl at the counter, turns out she was the general manager at Hapa in Denver and that Hapa owns Motomaki. Hearing this, I immediately had high expectations for this place as I love Hapa for the Asian-American sushi. For some reason, my bf forgot he ordered a roll and ate my bowl. The ingredients we both go were very similar minus one or two things. I was pretty disappointed in the food. Half of my maki was pretty decent, not the worst, while the other half was very bland tasting (I don't know why half is different, it was the same maki). The reviews for this place are really overhyped. I can see potential for this restaurant in Boulder, they just need to step up their food game especially for the price. I like the atmosphere and decor here, but this is not going to be one of my go-to places when I go back to Boulder. read more

I just discovered this place thanks to a Yelp friend and I have to say that I really loved it. I had the shrimp tempura bowl and it was delicious - very sizeable and the sauce was yummy. I was initially confused by the menu and ordered kind of on the fly - lunch time is extremely busy here and I didn't want to make anyone behind me wait. I would probably pore over the options a little more next time. So many choices! The space is clean and bright and very accessible although parking in that lot is a nightmare. read more

Motomaki - hamachi crunch - Japanese Near Me - Boulder, Colorado

This restaurant is straight garbage. The food tasted awful and not to mention expensive af. Never coming here again.

When it comes to lunch options the more variety the better. Unfortunately that usually means choosing sandwich shop A over B or insert fast casual option here. Motomaki is an interesting concept that combines the quick efficiency and uniqueness of a mad greens and applies it to Moto rolls or bowls. You have several custom rolls or bowl to choose from or you can opt to make your own. These are not standard sushi rolls but more of a marriage between a roll and a burrito. They have some really cool protein and vegetable options I didn't expect. I like this unique spot and hope more things like this open up in the near future to break up the normal lunch options. read more

Very good food. Very hip. Very loud. This restaurant is where I go to feel cool and "in" (and old). Seriously, The food is yummy. The portions are large, but it's not cheap. No sir. It is worth it however. I've tried a few dishes and enjoyed them...as did my entourage. I feel like my text on Motomaki cannot do it justice, nor does it explain in any detail the experience or delicacies, so don't take my word for it. Go ahead and try it out. read more

I first saw a picture of a sushi burrito on Instagram a few months ago, and I've been on the hunt ever since. Finally managed to make the trek to Boulder to try Motomaki, and it exceeded my expectations! I built my own burrito with nori, white rice, salmon, pickled daikon, avocado, lettuce, cucumber, sprouts and sriracha aioli. The aioli had the BEST flavor. I never wanted it to end. I predict many future schleps to Boulder for Motomaki. read more

Motomaki - Build-your-own with salmon, veggies and sriracha aioli. Amazing. - Japanese Near Me - Boulder, Colorado

My coworker recommended this place and he specifically recommended the Hawaiian Salmon Bowl (but instead of grilled asparagus- get tempura asparagus). I did just that. It. Was. Amazing. The salmon poke just tasted scrumptious- especially with guacamole. I love love love salmon poke and guacamole- so the fact that they were together- JUST AWESOME. I could have done without the bacon and the asparagus- they were not memorable (note that I do not like bacon in general). There was a lot of rice in the bowl- I didn't eat much rice because I did not want to fill up on it. If I did eat the rice though- it definitely could have been 2 small meals. This place is fast casual and has quite a lot of seating. Beware of parking in this area- people will run you over trying to get a spot! Overall, I highly recommend the Hawaiian Salmon Bowl. It is a tad expensive- $12 but good for once in a while! I came here again and LOVED the Hawaiian poke! ^_^ The outside patio is dog friendly as long as the dog is outside the fence... I put my dog outside the fence and she came back with about 50 plant seeds stuck in her fur! Rats. read more

This place is as good as it gets for fast casual dining. I was already a huge fan of Hapa, so when I heard they opened up this new concept/fusion restaurant in Boulder... I knew it was going to be quality. You can get their signature "rolls" in roll form, or bowl form. I personally suggest getting it in a bowl, because it's easier to eat. I find that the roll falls apart the last 3-4 bites and becomes a huge, delicious mess. My current favorite is the Shrimp Tempura bowl. It comes with Tempura shrimp, asparagus and some spicy tuna and avocado. All taste bud sensations are experienced at Motomaki. The restaurant itself has a very cool vibe, and they even serve booze. This place is a no brainer if you want a quality, delicious and funky meal (lunch or dinner.. but dinner gets crowded.) I would even go as far as saying that this place is great for a first date. A new Boulder favorite for sure. read more

I drove to Motomaki based on a glowing recommendation. It's an interesting concept - sushirrito served a la Chipotle. I walked in and saw the giant menu options on the wall. After I ordered, they gave me a pager which went off. I dropped off the pager and picked up my food on the side. It took a little while but it was a busy joint. I had the kalbi roll. There was a pre-made option but I decided to build my own. As a picky person, I really appreciate when they allow me to remove the stuff I don't like and add what I want. I sampled a bit of my friend's chicken, which she ordered in a bowl instead. The chicken was yummy. As for my kalbi, it was pretty good but I did not really like it in sushi form. Yes, I know that is the whole point! But I bit into it and it basically fell apart. Maybe it would be better if they wrapped more seaweed around it to hold it together. I love seaweed so I would totally be OK with that. I added tempura bits, which I would not do again. I was anticipating a crunchy texture but it was soggy by the time it got to me. Next time I'll try the fried garlic bits as an alternative. There were some sauce options but I decided against any of them. That was perfectly fine because the kalbi's marinade was enough for me. read more

Good lunch idea. I had the Kalbi bowl and it was OK. Everything was good but the Korean style shredded beef was a little lacking but it was palatable. I really liked the jalapeno dressing, but I wanted more without asking. It is a good lunch idea. read more

I am a traditionalist when it comes to good food, so I was skeptical at best about this place. And wow, I have to say they have won me over. I've been twice and gotten a bowl each time. The food is well done, fresh and surprisingly fast and really well priced. This is one of those places that could be totally kitschy and rely on its cool factor rather than quality food, but luckily it has both going for it. read more

This is the Chipotle of enormous Maki rolls! It's a cool concept with yummy ingredients. It only gets 4 stars because I expected it to be larger, and the rice wasn't sushi rice like I had hoped. The softshell crab big roll was kind of disappointing (no real taste except the deep fried crispies), however, my friend's nacho tuna roll looked fantastic! I'm interested in the Korean bbq type roll or the Vietnamese banh mi roll on the menu! Definitely worth another try. Maybe the bowl option as it seems like they get more stuff in it... read more

Why get a bunch of sushi rolls but you can just get one massive sushi roll? Because you're going to sacrifice on quality. Don't get me wrong, the salmon poke roll was great for a quick, delicious, and cheap bite that's better than the supermarket sushi. The flavors were big and bold (bacon and salmon and sriracha aioli) and the rice was the perfect sushi consistency, but the actual pieces of salmon were subpar and hard to eat (big chucks that you have to practically tear through instead of melts-in-mouth). If you've worked up an appetite while shopping and want to try something new, give Motomaki that chance. read more

We've been going to the Boulder location for years. Today we stopped in around 4 pm and couldn't get any help behind the counter. The restaurant was nearly empty. We wanted to order the #4 bowl with chicken instead of tuna. They insisted we use the kiosk but we couldn't get it to work. When I asked if they could just ring it up behind the counter they insisted that this is the way it had to be done and that they'd been doing it like that for a year and a half. Lazy, argumentative, and not willing to ring us up. We left. When the meal is almost $14 you shouldn't have to struggle to place your own order. Motomaki, your employees don't want to work. My husband and I were trying to figure out where to eat in Boulder, and this place kept coming up on Yelp. Well, it was delicious. I didn't understand the menu at first but the guy who took our order was really cool and explained everything. You either get a big sushi bowl of stuff or one giant sushi roll (think sushi burrito). The tempura asparagus is the bomb - get something with that in it. We got a salmon roll and a tuna bowl, both were really good. Great service and fast, even on a Friday night. read more

Warning to sushi noobs like me: this place does not serve sushi rolls- they're actually sushi burritos. Maybe this is a normal thing for sushi places lately but for me I am not a huge seafood person so when I want sushi it's like the kind that has avocado & at least one ingredient needs to be fried. When I opened the to- go box & saw the burrito I thought it was the wrong order because when I was looking at their menu online before ordering it reads "8 pieces" under the description of the roll I ordered. In my opinion, I do NOT want to eat a burrito of sushi. I know it was the same food as if it were in a roll, but it was really unappetizing in this form. I can't fairly rate the food because I was too grossed out to be fair. I might need to go get a bean burrito now from the taco shop across the street =( read more

I love this place! Motomaki sells sushi "burritos" or sushi bowls ranging between $9 to $12. I had the nacho tuna bowl while my friends had the Kalbi roll and the hamachi poke (best described as raw sushi fish and chips). At first, I thought the price of my $12 roll was a slightly expensive, but as a 5'10, 190 pound guy, I could only eat half my roll despite wanting to eat it all. The hamachi poki was really good a well and is definitely recommended. My only complaint is that even though they have wifi available, they are not giving access to customers. Slightly disappointing, but luckily for them, if you are workaholic like me, you can hop on the wifi available next door. read more
