The will tell you everything you need to know about getting started riding if you're new and what's the proper bike you should be on. Neither pressure you into getting something you don't need, shouldn't have, or maybe be too big for (my case). You really can't beat the prices either! I have been very impressed by the two gents who own and operate this joint. They really care about customer service. For example, when I asked them why I should go with them, or why I should buy from a dealership rather than a private party, they referred me to Yelp. I just got a bike from them yesterday. I feel comfortable that we met somewhere between "we're charging you top dollar" and "I'm stealing this bike from you guys." So I guess we're both fairly happy. They also started only servicing bikes that they sold due to their busyness, which is good because it shows that they value customer service as well. They sell 200 bikes a year, so they move at quite a clip, but as you can tell from reading reviews, they don't have many dings even doing those numbers. Plus, Paul and Joe seem about as down-to-earth + knowledgable as you can ask for. A real good experience. read more

Three riders from SF who have a combo used (licensed) motorcycle store combined with a funky little coffee shop (one sofa, three chairs?). I bought my next to last bike from them, was impressed. Good work, good attitude (I've got a LOT of miles on two wheels) and they handle all the nauseating paperwork. They will also sell your bike. They list on Craigslist.org, search on Moto Java. Paul & Joe are both awesome. I am a newbie rider and wanted to get an affordable used bike that I could rely on. (I figured I'd have enough problems learning the sport, without having to worry that I'd have to deal with mechanical problems also!) Anyhow I visited the guys a couple of times. I tried on different bikes, got advice from both of them about learning to ride and the sport and safety, etc. They were incredibly friendly, patient, and helpful. While they're technically a used moto dealer, I never felt a "sell". They wanted me to find something I really liked and was comfortable with. Anyhow I bought a bike from them about a year ago. The bike is great. They told me to "call with any questions". I've only had to take them up on the offer twice, but both times they were completely helpful and friendly and were beyond tolerant of my newbie queries. I've been back for maintenance a couple of times now. They are just as supportive with continuing care as they were during the sales process. Anyhow while taking ones bike to the shop could be a hassle, it never is with these guys. Every time I go there, I learn something new either about the sport or my bike. Anyone in the market for a used bike, I would recommend MotoJava. You'll probably pay $500 more than on Craigslist (which Paul & Joe will be really upfront about), but the refurb they do is great. I've got a bike that's almost 10 years old, and thanks to the detailed work they did I have had no unpleasant surprises to date. read more

After squeezing 7 years out of the "starter" bike I bought at MotoJava, I was overdue for an upgrade, and didn't hesitate to go back to these guys. In the interim I'd done some shopping at some other SF dealers, and some of them are pretty shifty. But at MotoJava, my experience was as great as it was the first time, and I really can't say enough good things about Joe and Paul. Mike was very helpful in finding the right bike for me. He gave me a lot of insight on motorcycles in general and I never felt pressure to buy from him. The shop does, however, have the best prices I could find in San Francisco and they just so happened to have the exact bike I was looking for, so of course I bought from them. One of the best ideas for a coffee shop. Part motorcycle shop, part cafe with a gritty European feel. Maps and tour photos cover the walls. Check the bathroom for the speeding ticket wall of fame. The staff will make you feel like youve known them for centuries. An great place for a cup of Joe and a conversation about the new BMW K1200R. Dedicated riders and mechanics bringing quality used bikes straight to you with 0 attitude, and a willingness to really talk about the bikes, their pluses and minuses. as an avid motorcyclist i am always touring the local moto digs. i have found the staff to be friendly and pretty informative. it is a true mom and pop shop. they sell bikes, sure their prices are higher then craigslist but they go through the bikes and replace regular wear and tear items. at least when you buy a bike from them you know your tires are good. the coffee is decent. they have a ton of moto parking in front of their shop to make it easy for us two wheeled type of folk. they also have a moderate selection of safety gear. read more

Great little shop. They have used bikes for good deals. I bought a used Honda rebel here for the heck of it haha. My only gripe is the parking really is terrible here being located in SF. But other than that I got a great deal both on my trade in bike and the price for the Honda rebel. I might go to this place again if I see something good. The owner even sent my manual and electric charger by mail when I forgot it. This is definitely a good motorcycle dealer to check out in the city. I got the impression that there was attention to detail, and that means piece of mind. Moto Mike made my weekend! My girlfriend and I visited the shop on Friday, just looking, and with Moto Mike's superb knowledge, tips, and sales skills, we of course left with my new '08 Yamaha V Star. It's an amazing starter bike, just what I needed to be confident and ready to get out and ride, which I have been doing daily since the bike's delivery (thanks again, Moto Mike!). With this bike, I'm learning fast, and getting the skills I need and want to hit the road in style! I couldn't recommend a better small business to you, they even kept the shop open for me after hours when I was fighting traffic to get back with the money for the bike (friday traffic in SF, ugh), and Moto Mike rode the bike over to my house the next morning and delivered it for me, free of charge, as I wasn't yet ready or skilled enough to ride it home to Oakland from the shop. This review is about the motorcycle side of the shop (I've heard great things about the coffee but am more of a Mountain Dew guy myself, sadly). If I could give my experience with these guys six stars, I would. Intelligent, articulate and zero sales pressure. I walked in at 5:59:59 and Paul never hesitated to say that he wouldn't mind answering my questions about the bike I was interested in. He showed me the flaws immediately (it was a used bike) and walked me through their process of repairs/inspection. Answered all of the semi-educated I had and all of the really stupid questions I had. Stayed well past closing without once glancing a watch or making me feel rushed. I ended up staying and just talking bikes because he was that easy to talk to. Price was fair, maybe a shade higher than I would find in the open market. However, the peace of mind that you get from their inspection and forthrightness is worth every penny. Plus, they take care of the DMV hassles and let you pay on a credit card (none of this "cash only" crap that forces you to max out your daily withdrawals from your bank's ATMs). Again, no pressure to buy accessories but they've got them there and I 100% believed him when he said that they stock only the products that they deem to be the best value for their customers. And to top it off, I called today and talked to Joe about insurance. He readily gave great advice that ended up saving me a bunch of money. I honestly don't know that I've ever had as many good things to say about a customer service experience as I have about buying a used bike from MotoJava. I will update this if anything goes wrong with the bike down the road (and after I take it in for repairs) but I strongly suspect that the 5+ Star ratings will continue. read more

I'm reluctant to give any place 5 stars. Except for MotoJava. That's the Reader's Digest version. Here's the why, for you readers out there: 1. These are real SMEs (subject matter experts). Likely outcome if you choose against their advice is that you'll later wish you had gone with their advice. Their recommendations are worth bucks, guys and gals - trying to undo a mistake, the secondary transaction costs, heartache, hemming and hawing, etc translates to dollars and time you don't spend wasting or regretting if you give their advice careful consideration. 2. Paul is honest without the abrasion that seems to go hand-in-hand with honest people. He'll tell you the truth without making you feel like a dummy. That's fantastic for newbs who may want to give motorcycles a try but may be reluctant to ask questions around experts. 3. These guys aren't charging a fortune for anything they sell. It's all tied to KBB values. Do the math, we aren't talking about massive margins here. Yet they treated me incredibly well for a bike I was looking at that was mid 2k. My lawyer at my mortgage closing wasn't nearly as personable, nor did he even feign concern about my well being. In my dealings with them, MotoJava went above-and-beyond. 5 stars, well earned. I've pretty much decided that if these guys stop selling bikes and start selling something else they're the folks I want to buy whatever that's going to be from. While shopping for my second bike (my first having just completed it's death throes in my driveway a few days earlier) I went into Motojava on the recommendation of my boyfriend and fellow motorcyclist. I read their Yelp reviews and was duely impressed. There wasn't even the usual crazy ranting and raving about something totally unfounded. I now see why that is. When my husband and I stopped in there a couple of days ago, they didn't have anything that suited my needs exactly but Joe said that if I could hang in there a couple of weeks something perfect would come through and I should just check back regularly. He then proceeded to give us a 20 minute free tutorial on how to weed out bad apples whilst Craigslist hopping. On my way out of the city yesterday I decided to pop in and see if they had anything new. Joe showed me a bike he had just gotten that fit the bill about perfectly and said that if it is what it appears to be he should have it ready in a couple of weeks and that it'd be priced at just about my limited 2K budget. I said, "cool...shopping over!" (I hate shopping). He actually still encouraged me to keep looking. I ran one or two of the options I was going to go look at by him and he gave me a refresher on the "how to not get screwed on a used bike" primer. We went around looking at bikes the last few days and today looked at a very similar bike that was 6 years younger but with 30K more miles on it that I probably could have gotten for about $500 less. It looked pretty darned good and rode really nicely but when my husband and I went back to Motojava afterward so I could show him Joe's '86, we both agreed it was the far nicer bike and frankly I'd just rather buy an older and slightly more expensive bike that Joe has already greenlighted than another cheaper one 6 years younger that he hasn't. It's really that simple. A used motorcycle is not a commodity. To me the person I buy it from matters at least as much as the bike itself. Eventually this bike, like any, will need work and I have a mechanic who already knows it intimately. How do you do better than that? These guys are just awesome, helpful and way above and beyond in terms of customer care (as in caring for people who may or may not even be able to be their customers). I work in a stuffy, ridiculously pretentious showroom in the neighborhood and let me tell you- if I didn't have MotoJava to escape to on a regular basis I would suffocate and die. Maria runs the show and is truly the hostess with the mostess, sweet as sugar and effortlessly makes you feel "at home" in a motorcycle garage- of all places! I hit up MotoJava for Maria's specialty sandwiches- made fresh, on the spot. My favorite is the "Nemesis" . . . I walk in and Maria doesn't even ask- she knows what I'm in for! She promised that one day she will change the name from "Nemesis" to "Sarah" in my honor, haha. Even though my escape to the "real world" is only 30 minutes out of an 8-hour work day, it's fulfilling and so very appreciated. Thank you Maria!! I'm a big fan. read more

A few years ago when I started riding I wandered into MotoJava and found something unique - a motorcycle shop where the people are genuine, friendly, informative, and don't seem to really expect anything in return. That first time I was just trying to get info on different motorcycles and what I should be looking for. The gentleman spent probably 45 minutes with me and I walked out the door without being able to put a cent in their coffers, but that encounter (and every subsequent one) has got me hooked. Between great prices, honest folks, and their personal touch I would recommend to anybody to head down to MotoJava who's looking for a new ride. My only regret is that when it was time to buy they didn't have a good match for me and it was craigslist to the rescue. Werkstatt has my repair needs met for life, but MotoJava is where I'm going when I'm looking for my next bike. read more
