My wife and I were honestly hesitant to try a newer modern Mexican spot in Ventura since we usually stick to our favorite hole-in-the-wall places (Los Comales). Glad we gave Mother's Tacos a shot because we were pleasantly surprised. The food and drinks were both really good. The chicken mole was excellent, and the torta was a total hit. Even our 5-year-old loved it, which always says a lot. What stood out most though was our server, Cesar. He was fantastic from start to finish. Every recommendation he gave us was on point(including his surprise tequila recommendation), and he treated us with the kind of confidence and professionalism you'd expect from someone with years of hospitality experience. Dudes got old school server vibes that's rarely seen anymore! Super welcoming, attentive, and genuinely made the whole experience better. Let's start with the good, the ambiance was nice, bathroom was clean and staff was wonderful. I went for my husband bday which was also on their 1 year anniversary. I'm not sure it my visit took a turn because it was the anniversary or what but we got there around 2:30pm, the waiter told us the happy hour was from 3-6pm if we wanted wait. We left and came back at 3:15pm. I asked for the happy hour menu and the waitress told me that it didn't start till 6pm and the waiter who told me had gone home, long story short she honored the happy hour prices. Due to it being the anniversary the elote wasn't being served. I asked for more horchata which they said they were out of till later. When we got the food, most of it was over salted. The chicharróns and dirt papas were too salty to finish. Even adding the salsas didn't temper down the salt or added flavor or spice to the food. The asada taco was the best thing we had. We also got 2 churros. I feel like they were to thick an not done all of the way through. Also heard they had an Oreo churros for later that day too. And when I found out it was Mexican food.... Let's just say the gas pedal went a little bit closer to the floorboard. As we pulled into the shared parking lot, I could already tell by the amount of the cars in the lot that the place was going to be hoppin. As we made our way to the front door, there was a small line to get checked in, which is always a good sign. And within a few minutes we were at our table ready to get our grub on. Of course, NO MATTER what Mexican Restaurant I go to.... Chips & Salsa is my First Name and Tacos is my Surname. My middle name you ask?? Mexican Coke in a BOTTLE if they have it.... And Mother's HAD it! First things First... The chips were homemade & cut big (perfect for getting a big dip of salsa). The salsa was red, fire roasted and made my stomach do the happy dance. They are not complimentary, but worth the $7 bucks. Next up... A Margarita for my wife which was presented with a colorful salted rim, a dried orange and a flower... It was almost too pretty to drink...ALMOST. I, of course got my Mexican Coke in a bottle and it was Qué Rico! From there, we got right to business! As we were there on a Sunday, we ordered from the Brunch Menus and Brunch we did... Ventura Style! Between my wife & I... We went with 3 sliced Ribeye Tacos and they were.. EXCELLENT! A homemade tortilla... With a huge, thin sliced piece of Ribeye with a dollop of green salsa. Simple, Unique and Delish! For kicks and giggles, I also ordered a salt-grilled shrimp taco... My only edit that I would had made had I known... I wasn't a fan of the salsa that was on the shrimp taco, but that's just me. Next time, I'll opt for it to come dry and add salsa from my chips & salsa or made sub for the green salsa. As for my 3 kids, they shared their Mexican Hot Chocolate Pancakes with brûléed bananas, with a side of Mexican chocolate sauce & vanilla ice cream.... Ice Cream? For Breakfast?? Yes Please!!!! I believe we ordered a side of rice which never came out, but by the time we ate everything else, we were stuffed and just told them to just take it off our bill. Hadn't been here in a few months, so we decided to come in for dinner. Gotta say, I'm not liking the changes that they've made for dinner. I came hoping to order some tacos, but they don't have regular tacos anymore for dinner. They offer entree plates, ranging from $27 to $47, with the intent to have them done family style, and you can make your own taco. The food was good, but it didn't hit nearly as good as their regular tacos do - something was missing. Plus, I like to get a variety of different meats when I get tacos, and you're kind of stuck with just ordering one or two things. If I were to come when they're serving their tacos, I can get three different type of tacos for less than $30. For dinner, you're stuck getting a plate (most of which are more than $30), and making your own taco without any variety unless you order numerous plates. Overall, Mothers was one of our dinner places. Their food is still good, but I'm definitely not a fan of what they've done to their menu. More expensive, less variety. Don't think I'll return until they start serving individual tacos again. read more

Got this place recommended by a friend and finally decided to check it out for lunch--glad I did. We went all in on tacos, and every single one delivered. I tried the Baja fish, Al Pastor, and the steak con papas. The flavors on each taco were perfectly balanced, but the standout for me was definitely the steak con papas--so good. The chef rotates the menu from time to time, which I actually love because it keeps things fresh, but if this is the baseline, you really can't go wrong with anything. The aesthetic: 10/10 The food: 5/10 I really wanted to like this place because the aesthetic is so fun. But unfortunately the food didn't match. I ordered the Modelo Negra fish tacos which I will say are a hardy portion and my fish was decently sized and cooked perfectly. But the ratio of fish to cabbage was definitely off. (70% cabbage/tortilla : 30% fish) The tortillas were definitely handmade and delicious. My friend ordered the CDMX taco plate with asada and it came out SUPER burnt. It may have well have jerky, it was for sure a jaw workout. Again, the portion is good for what you pay for but the quality definitely isnt. For a drink I had tried their horchata auga fresca which had a distinct flavor of coconut. It definitely didn't taste like it came scooped from a ladel, more like coconut milk with spices. Super disappointed. This place gives me "gentrified mexican food" vibes but on a high quality level. What a great night out! Mothers is a really cool (sorry, Boomer-speak) place to enjoy good friends, good drinks, and good food. Lots of windows and polished concrete floors really set the mood. You order using a table QR code. We enjoyed Mothers Margaritas, chips and salsa, and housemade guacamole while waiting for our meal. Our meal included Carne Asada tacos, Negra Modelo Fish Tacos, along with Red Rice and Pinto Beans. We would have loved to try a Bowl of Chicharřon, but clearly we had our table filled with plenty of wonderful food. The serving crew were very nice and helpful in navigating the menu. Boo Anywho my car was done charging after 30+ no food ready... i honestly just wanted a refund this is ridiculous. Employees need to set better expectations when customers order from here. The Esquite was exquisite! Very tasty, good combination of sauce, corn, and cheese with great texture. The tacos, not so much. I ordered the Sliced Ribeye, Duck Carnitas, and Salted-Grilled Shrimp. I think I did enjoy the Ribeye but at some point, my mouth was burning so much from the intense spice that I couldn't really enjoy my other tacos. I haven't had this serious of a burn in a very long time. I would say the Duck Carnitas came out lukewarm even though I waited a good 20 minutes for it. The Shrimp taco had two layers of tortilla but even then it got really liquidy that you probably have to eat that first. I was originally thinking about coming back for the octopus when I first saw the menu but I don't know anymore. read more

We came on a Wednesday night and I was not expecting it to be that busy. The staff were friendly. It was cold and maybe some rain so all the seating inside was taken. I wish they had more tables inside. I am not sure I love that you have to order at the register. I would rather be able to be at the table and decide with the other people at the table what to order. First off, the frozen strawberry daiquiri? Solid choice. Sweet, cold, and hits the spot. Ordering is at the door, and if you want to add more food later, just scan the QR code at your table. Efficient, almost futuristic! lol it's like taco ordering in 3025. The crispy al pastor from the trompo is always what I look for. No trompo here which is a bummer. Al pastor on trompo is originally from Puebla influenced by Lebanese immigrants, it later became a staple in Mexico City. I was told by a staff member that Al pastor trompo tacos aren't Mexico City rather TJ styles tacos and that I'm used to that not the real Mexico City. I felt mansplained ...though I have been to Mexico City multiple times and trompo al pastor is everywhere. No worries, I get it they do thangs diff here :) Cool! No worries but I know my tacos ;) I have my preference, these tacos aren't bad I was just looking for something different. I would come back for the suadero alone. Not sure what to order, the hostess cheerfully guided me through the menu. I went with most her suggestions which included Al pastor, suedero, fish and hongo tacos. Delicious, gourmet tacos. Busy day when we went, but they took care of us - even outside in the line. Once we got to the front, though, they seated us very promptly and got our orders right away. The tacos were delicious. You can see how they make the tortillas in house, right in front of you, so you know it's fresh. They weren't shy on the meat. Oh my god, RUN don't walk to Mothers Tacos in Ventura. My friends and I finally made it for Taco Tuesday and for the first week for their Happy Hour Menu. Located in the new Gasworks area, Mothers stands out with its badass signage, cool decor and amazing smells coming from the kitchen. The service was literally impeccable. You start by ordering at their entrance and then grab a seat. From there it's table side service. Our drinks came out within minutes and then very soon after trays upon trays of food. If you need a refill or an add on you can order from your phone to save you a trip back to the front. No joke though we had cocktails and all of our food in under 10 minutes. Everyone was super nice here and welcoming. The vibes were immaculate and a special shoutout to Melanie at Mothers who checked up on our table a bunch throughout our stay. My friends and I are ballers and almost ordered everything on the menu. We tried: *Pepino Margarita *Michelada *Frozen Mango Margarita *Oysters Asada *Pastor Dirty Fries *Chicharrón *Churros *And plates upon plates of tacos: Asada, Pastor, Fried Pescado, Chorizo, Mushrooms, & Sweet Potato. This spot is popular and gets busy (rightfully so) but you definitely need to add them to your must try list. So grateful we have such an amazing eatery in Ventura. Well I was very hyped to try this place after seeing this place in construction across the street from where I use to live. The downtown Ventura area needs a trendy GOOD Mexican spot. I ordered the $19 dollar taco plate with churros as a desert. I went with an asada, Al pastor and chorizo taco. Honestly, the food needed salt/ seasoning. Lacked in flavor and for how expensive the tacos were, I did expect better. At best I would rate my tacos a 5 out of 10. The churros were the real STAR of the show. For $6 bucks you get two pieces and those were so good. A solid 10/10 on the churros. Overall, I will come back for the churros again, mark my words. Checked out Mothers the other night. Such a great new restaurant to the midtown Ventura area. The food was awesome and I recommend get the Plato Personal so you can try three different tacos. The rice and beans were a great compliment. On the beverage side I ordered the mango margarita. It was perfect way to enjoy my meal. At the end of our meal we ordered the churros and it was crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. We have been twice. The first time they had only been open a week or so and it was a little chaotic. Now that they have settled in a bit, we are completely delighted. The space is open and lively (love the outdoor patio) and the service is friendly and knowledgeable. There can be a little line because you initially order at a desk, get a lotteria number, and then find a table. If you want to add anything on afterwards, you can order from your table. The food is fresh and colorful and both times we were stuffed. We have tried the tacos, dirty fries, guacamole (expensive, but a good size), and the ceviche. Everything was good but the ceviche is our favorite. They also have a pretty good alcoholic and non alcoholic drink menu. Give it a try--you won't be disappointed! read more

We have been waiting all week for tonight's reservation [4.26.25] If you follow them on IG they have been letting people know right now they are doing reservations, which we thought was genius! Some people asked about doing walk ins and they said they were working through the reservations but to check back within a certain time. Please have some grace during this time, they did amazing tonight, but things are undoubtedly going to come up. We brought our mom because she is the biggest critic of Mexican food and YES it was Mom Approved, and here is why: To start off the salsas were full of flavor and a they had a good selection to mix and match. That alone is how we knew it was going to be a good meal. We particularly liked the Salsa de Arbol and the Salsa Macha. The Chicharron bites were freaking awesome, but would have preferred a ball of guac instead of the guac salsa they had. We ordered extra tortillas and made tacos with them, bomb! We absolutely loved the Suadero tacos and the Asada mulitas. The Suadero was crispy and full of flavor and the cheese on the mulitas was really good. The Hongo one wasn't for me only because the thyme or herb in it was too strong for me. The Al Pastor Dirty fries were very well seasoned and definitely a good shareable portion. We saw their Octopus pictures ahead of time and came with the intention of trying it, we made tacos with those hand made tortillas and really liked that it was soft and not rubbery. Definitely paired well with the micheladas. For drinks we ordered the Horchata con Coco which was really creamy, but the Fresas con Crema one was a crowd favorite! Their Mango Margarita IS A MUST! If this was day 5, I can't wait to see them in a couple of months, a year and so on. I thought their service was great, they were friendly, seated us promptly, brought our food right away, and checked on us at all times.
