My boys enjoyed grilled cheese sandwiches on homemade bread and fresh, hand-cut fries, and chicken strips. The people who run this restaurant are super sweet. Apparently, they've been around for a long time and have a large fan base. With that said, the restaurant itself is looking a little rundown. The burger was really pretty good but small for the price. The fries were decent. The pulled pork sandwich my wife tried was pretty boring. I know everyone has gotten more expensive in the world, but $27+ for one smallish burger, a 4" pulled pork sandwich, one soda, and a large order of fries is pretty steep. I have nothing against this place and certainly wish them continued success--but honestly the quality and value are both average. read more

Thanks to another Yelp review, we knew we had to stop at Mother Mae's!! It's has a great old-school diner ambiance with lots of tables to choose from. The menu is quite extensive, but the best part was the "tour of the menu" we were given by an older gentleman who has worked there since it opened. The sandwiches were delicious and the homemade sourdough sandwich rolls were so good! Mary tried the hot pastrami (she only regretted not adding cheese), while I tried a cold turkey & ham (with cheese). The servings are plentiful for sure! They hand-cut their fries which were the perfect accompaniment to our sandwiches. If you find yourself traveling anywhere near Evanston, be sure to stop by!! This is clearly a family owned business where everyone takes pride in what they do and they do it all themselves. The owners took our order and were extremely sweet! We were in the area geocaching and decided to find a local place for lunch. What a treat we found at Mother Mae's Kitchen. I was a little leery when we arrived because the place was mostly empty and it was lunch time. I'm glad we kept going. We had delicious sandwiches and even better, hand cut, freshly prepared french fries. This is a favorite of my and not always easy to find. We shared a large serving and that was just about right. The sour dough rolls for our sandwiches were fresh made in the kitchen and very tasty. We took half of each home, so we could enjoy all of the fries. read more

This place is located on an interesting little street. We went expecting one thing and got another. I am referring to the menu. We misunderstood and thought it was like comfort food. It is a sub and hamburger joint but with a lot of choices. Chili cheese dogs, hotdogs, all sorts of burgers, sandwiches, soups of the day and Frito pie. That's what I ordered and it was yummy with homemade Chili, onion, cheese sour cream and tomato. We had them leave off the black olives. Delish!!! Eh, no. The couple that runs it are super sweet so I feel bad leaving a not great review but honestly the food was not great. I would've been better off eating at a gas station. :( Stopped here on a road trip from Vegas and was excited for the mom and pop hole in the wall and figured it'd be run down w/ great short order food. The hamburger was a thin frozen patty that my toddler who usually would care less wouldn't eat. The frito pie was bleh. The fries were decent. My toddler loved the chocolate milk and the raspberry milkshake I ordered was the one thing that was yummy. I would've never eaten here had it not been for the positive reviews. Because we chose here I missed out on Ana's coffee place down the street that closed 5 minutes before we got there & actually looked super cute and good. Smh Nooooooo! If you're driving through Evanston on the I-80 and you're in the mood for some Ma and Pa food come here. Everyone who works here is super old. It's crazy that they can still work. The old people are really nice, but they often seem confused and they are pretty slow. This place isn't the best place on earth, but it's better than most of the shit places in Evanston. read more
