Dinner - Jollof Rice w/Tomato Stew, Chicken & Plantain 3.7.20
    Gail R.

I joined a friend one weekend at this spot - they selected it and I agreed as we had never been there before. It is located in Muddy Branch plaza and is not a stand-alone restaurant. Upon entering the establishment, my first thought was: Are they even opened? Reason: there were a few tables and the place was empty - initially I did not see any employees and only saw a bell on the counter - I guess to ring for service. This place serves African food - it was my second time eating African food (my first time was in DC so many years ago that I do not remember). Someone finally came out and helped us with the menu by explaining more details on a few items we asked about. At first the information shared seemed a bit confusing but then I was able to figure it out. As the employee stepped away - they said "Your food will be ready in 10 minutes". That was quick (I hope it wasn't re-heated). I got the following dish: Jollof Rice with Tomato Stew, Chicken and Plantain. The rice was good (the tomato stew was placed on top of the rice - looked like a tablespoon size); I also enjoyed the plantains as well. There were 2 medium sized pieces of chicken, but not fall-of-the-bone meat. My friend enjoyed their meal (I can't remember what they ordered). When checking in on the app, you get 1 free soda on your first visit (too bad I hardly ever drink soda anymore, but picked 1 up anyways). When it came time to pay for our orders, they did not know how to do a cash transaction or their machine didn't look to be set up for that - weird...so I ended up just tipping extra as I had no change. During the time we were there, a few other customers came in, but they got their food to go (I would say about 2 people). It seems more like a carry-out spot even though they have a few tables for dinning in. If I ever went back, I would opt for carry-out instead.

This was my first visit to the restaurant and I loved it. Great service and the food was outstanding! The portions were huge! I made almost 3 meals out of the plate of food I ordered.

A piece of bone with no goat meat on it

I ordered delivery from Mosun's for the first time and was excited to try a Nigerian restaurant that's nearby. I ordered the rice and stew with plantains and goat meat extra spicy and a fish patty. First off, they did not adhere to my 'extra spicy' notes because there was zero spice in this sauce. The rice was overcooked and the stew was the blandest stew I've ever had. The goat meat was non existent and filled with blocks of bone. The plantain looked old and stale and was saturated in oil that was likely days old. The fish patty was dripping in oil and I almost puked at first bite because they didn't disclose the type of fish on grub hub and it appeared to be sardines, not even cod fish. Had I not been busy studying I would've been better off making stew myself. This is literally the worst Nigerian food I've ever had and a waste of $40. I would not advise anyone to come here if you want good Nigerian food.

    Efo Egusi and Eba

Doesn't look like much when you walk past the restaurant but the pictures of the food on the windows will make you stop and look and then go inside to try some. It was my first time visiting with my friend that was also craving some African food. I got some Efo Egusi (Stew made with spinach ans grounded melon seed) with Eba (Gari fufu); a Nigerian dish. I liked the dish as it was a little spicy, it tastes good but I guess I was expecting more flavors. The only thing I didn't like was the amount of palm oil that was used in this dish. My friend got some Attieke (cassava couscous) with fried fish and a side of fried plantains; a dish from Cote d'Ivoire. The dish was okay. Okay because it needs some improvement. The attieke was dry and it didn't have any tomato sauce to go with it. When we asked them for some tomato sauce to go with the attieke, they looked lost and had to ask us if we wanted some pepper sauce and that showed us that they didn't know that tomato sauce is a must with this Ivorian dish. This is where I have a problem with African restaurant that try to serve dishes from different countries. If you decide to do so you have to make sure you serve them as close as they can be from the original country. And the last thing that really made me go was the fact that when we asked for the bill, we were asked to go up to the counter as if it was a fast food restaurant. If you run a sit down restaurant you have to wait on your guest and bring them their checks to the table. Atmosphere: There was no decor or music to make you feel in an African restaurant. The man that was there at the time of our visit was just sitting behind the counter watching tv and when my friend walked in, he didn't acknowledge her until she walked up to the counter and said hi to him first. Apparently watching tv was more important than who ever was walking in. We, personally, weren't impressed by the service or food but my friend says we should give it another try very soon so I should come with an update in a couple of weeks.

Love that they have pictures of the dishes!

They have a very very large menu to pick from! Authentic Nigerian food and the staff is super nice. I got the Jollof rice with chicken and plantains and it was pretty good! My bf got agusi soup and fufu with chicken. They also have SNAIL, like Nigerian snail that they fly from there! Good variety of drink options too. Definitely recommend this place if your looking for good Nigerian food

Suya with Suya Spice, onions and diced red bell peppers

I stopped by Mosun's Kitchen (An African restaurant with a focus on Nigerian cuisine) for a quick bite very early on a hot Wednesday afternoon. The restaurant opens at 11 a.m. The atmosphere was calm, clean and colorful. The menu seemed quite extensive. There were lots of photos of the various dishes both at the restaurant front and inside the restaurant to help customers have a quick visual of what dishes look like before ordering. The restauranteur was welcoming and attentive. I ordered the Beef Suya which came with Suya spice and onions. Diced red bell peppers were offered at no additional charge. The prices were reflective of the current economy. The Suya was tasty but chewy. African movies streaming on a good sized screen was a good distraction from the heat that I would soon return to outside. While I only had the Suya at this visit. I credit Mosun's Kitchen for the extensive menu and a calm, clean space where one could have a conversation without trying to talk over loud sounds. The restaurant also takes phone and online orders. Delivery is provided via Uber and the likes.

I am a foodie at heart and wanted to try fufu. I have had a few African dishes but I usually default to Jolloff rice when trying restaurants. Today I was determined to try fufu so, I took the recommendation of the nice gentleman who took my order. The egusi with beef and fufu and let me tell you I really want to go back for more like right now. It was delicious. My only disappointment was the portion size. It was snack sized and I was still hungry once it was gone. I thought it would be dinner sized based on the time of day I got it (830pm), the pictures they have posted up in the establishment and just portion size most restaurants serve. This was a bittersweet experience. It was really good tasting but the portion size was less than the average lunch special.

    Raw overpriced $1 puff Puff-Puff

I have a weird relationship with this restaurant. Every time I go there I am even more disappointed with the food and I still keep hoping it'll get better. It is unfortunately the closest African spot near me and honestly it feels redundant to keep updating my review. They sell puff puff for one dollar per puff puff and it's RAW, and the fish roll is actually fish pie and it's disgusting. The scotch egg is disgusting; honestly, I have yet to buy something from here and actually eat it to completion. That being said they outsource the chin chin thank God and it's actually delicious so you can tell they don't make it. Also their menu price is not the price they charge you. Everything cost more in the store.

Jollof Rice platter. Serverd with plantains and lamb. So so delicious.

UberEats review…read more Service: given the distance of the restaurant, the order took a bit long but it was packaged well so nothing spilled and the food was still still fresh and warm. Dish: I ordered the spice wings with a side of jollof rice and spinach Efo-Riro. OMG! So let's start with the wings, the flavor on these wings were the right balance between rich spices and touch of sweetness. There was a hint of honey lingering on my tongue after it was greeted by a strong spicy flavor. Adding to this, the wings were fried to perfection with crispy skin resting on the top and smooth white meat down to the bone. AMAZING! The jollof rice was stellar! And while I do not know much about the perfect preparation for this dish to review if this is the best, I've had a few from various West African countries and can say that this one had that grainy texture with just the right spices mixed in. The spinach efo-riro was SO good. I honestly could have had a plate of this by itself and my taste buds would still be pleased. Overall, this place is very generous with their serving sizes. Well portioned, beautifully prepared, seasoned to perfection, and a sure trip down culture lane! I enjoyed it so much.

TERRIBLE SERVICE AND UNDER COOKED BLOODY CHICKEN - FOR THE PRICE!…read more I was excited about trying the cuisine, so I ordered online a few signature dishes. The cost was around 140 dollars for 4 dishes and some meat pies. The cost was not an issue until we opened the bags to partake in the food. The first thing we tried were the meat pies, that they seemed to just toss in a plastic bag (see photos attached). Terrible presentation, but the pies were tasty. The second dish we tried was the JERK CHICKEN - as soon as you cut into the meat - it squirted a mixture of blood and spices! (see photos attached). The third dish we tried was the (2) orders of OXTAILS - they were delicious, however for the price point to get 3 small pieces of oxtail was disappointing. Finally we tried the BANKU with Tilapia - very good, the fish was cooked thru and the spices and veggies were on point. The sides on all the dishes were nicely seasoned and delicious-plantains, coleslaw, rice and peas and joloff rice. The other blaring issue is customer service and decent communication. I ordered this meal thru the online tool, who notified me when to pickup the food - 3:09 pm was the time, I was there at 3:10 pm. I did not get my order until 3:45 pm! I watched as two customers who clearly ordered after me receive their orders. Of course I inquired when I entered the establishment and the owner assured me just a few minutes- they cook the fish to order. No problem, I want my food freshly prepared. So 30 minutes in I approach again, mind you I have not left the establishment, and was told they had burned the fish and needed to prepare it again. Why not communicate to your customers that there was a problem- instead of having me sit there not knowing what the heck is going on!?!? Now you must be asking yourself - after about an hour and a half from order to pickup- why was the JERK CHICKEN a bloody mess? Especially since you had more time to prepare everything!! TERRIBLE Service! Food under cooked and price points don't match food quantity or quality! (clearly, I am not the first customer with this issue). Please DO BETTER - it is nice to see after 15 years of residency in this area this genre of culture and cuisine, but the way you're going will cause you to be closed down.

The food is Ghanaian so you'll find a lot of west African staples here. I ordered their Suya rice with chicken and beef. My wife ordered the acheke with fried fish and ordered a plate of jollof to take home. The suya fried rice was my favorite dish. It's one of their own creations but it's a fried rice with suya spice in it. It's not as spicy as I personally like, but I'm a huge fan of spice so I imagine it's a good level for most people. The jollof was also pretty good. I'll say that the chicken and beef in both the jollof and suya fried rice were a little dry, but they had good flavor to them so it can be overlooked. The acheke was standard for what I expect from it. The fried fish could have used a little bit of seasoning but was fine to go with it. Food took about 20 mins to be cooked but I appreciate that it's done fresh. The service was great! Kevin was the one who took our order and helped us with any additional requests while we ate. Drinks were handed to us still in the can, and one contained a visible piece of hair. The same employee repeatedly touched her hair while handling food, which was unsettling enough. But, the final straw was when she delivered the pepper sauce and stuck her THUMB directly into it, then still charged us for that same sauce. As for the food: the jollof rice was undercooked, the beef was dry and overcooked, and overall the meal was not worth the nearly $30 per person we paid.
