I usually don't leave reviews if I feel like the existing reviews accurately represent the situation. With mosquito, the case is not as such. I'll begin by saying that the establishment lives up to its name - my experience was just as annoying as the pesky mosquito. I was not (like some other negative reviews) expecting authentic Asian food, so I think my complaints here are valid.
THE SERVICE
When we got there (just me and my boyfriend), there was no line but the restaurant (very small) was mostly full. I tried to get the attention of the server who asked me to wait by putting up her hand and walking away. Strike 1. Slowly, a line began to form behind us. Still, no one brought us to a table, told us how long the wait would be, or even said hello/hola.
Finally, the same girl who had put up her hand to me before "sat" us at a table. A shared table with two other strangers, directly in front of the constantly opening door on a freezing cold day (it was literally snowing!) and by "sat" I mean she gestured to the table implying that we should sit there. Strike 2.
There was a menu (see the existing pics of the menu on yelp) sitting on the table so we grabbed it and decided what we wanted, but we did have some questions about certain items. There was no pencil to mark down what we wanted so we just sat there. We continued to sit and wait, and at this point we had been sitting and waiting for about 20 minutes, when I looked outside the door and saw our "server" (the same girl from the previous two times, orangey red hair with bangs) having her smoke break and texting on her phone. STRIKE FREAKING 3. Honestly, what kind of restaurant has you wait for 20 minutes without taking your order or even bringing you water? I almost got up and left.
At this point, I pulled over the closest server, a blonde girl with her hair in a bun, and asked if we could order. She said yes and immediately brought us a pencil and the tapas dishes. Then we marked down what we wanted, asked her our questions, and she left to put in our order, bringing us our drinks/water about 45 seconds later. Finally, SERVICE.
What we ordered:
- pho ba "city"
- pork dumplings
- pork ribs
- white rice
- beef something (don't remember the name)
THE FOOD
When our food came, they brought me my pho, and then the lazy orange haired girl brought my boyfriend a pho as well. He was confused and didn't know if that was the beef dish he had ordered, but since none of our other dishes had come out, we had no point of reference. Shortly after, the other 4 dishes came out, so we were confused about the pho that he hadn't ordered. I asked the blonde server about it and she apologized because it had been brought to us by mistake, it belonged to the next table. I was not shocked given that the orange haired girl had brought it out. We didn't get charged for that bowl of pho that he didn't order.
Overall, I thought the food was mediocre. It wasn't bad. But it was nothing special. I mainly ate the pho and the pork dumplings, which were very oily compared to ones I've had in the past. Dripping oil as soon as you bit into it. Some of the negative reviews on here are very critical of the food, I assume because they are used to high quality, authentic Asian food, which this is not - but you're in Barcelona, not China or Vietnam, so you have to be realistic there. I think a lot of the people who like this place are not Asian or ethnic and have more bland palettes, because the food isn't very flavourful. But it's not terrible. I didn't have high expectations but I have to set the record straight, because mosquito was recommended to us by a friend, and someone on yelp called it "divine intervention", which couldn't be further from the truth. As you can see, the blonde server really is the only redeeming quality this place has. God forbid you go on a day she isn't working. There is a ramen place down the street that looked great if you're looking for a pseudo-Asian experience.
My recommendation? Skip mosquito, and go to La Pepita instead. It is amazing Catalan tapas, absolutely unreal, the best meal I had in Barcelona by far. I'd go back there a million times over before I'd ever step foot in mosquito again. read more
