This place just brings a smile to my face every time I come here. Whether it be for lunch or dinner, the food and atmosphere is always spot on. The chefs are the hardest working people in the business. One chef at lunch and two for dinner, it's incredible how many dishes they turn out. It's also the perfect dive bar for a beer and some dim sum. My favorite dishes here are the bao bun (all of them are great), the pan fried beef dumplings, the steamed pork dumplings and the edamame. Stopped for dinner. Ordered starters: edamame, fried veggie gyoza, steamed pork gyoza, meals: pork ribs, and char su pork, and drinks: beer (IPA) and a soft drink that featured elderflower. The edamame and gyoza were great though the fried veggie were a bit over cooked on the bottom. The ribs were an odd texture that we didn't enjoy. The char su was excellent. The beer was good. PREFACE TO MY REVIEW: I am ethnically Chinese and I've eaten a LOT of Chinese food so I do have high standards. 3 stars because Mosquito was OK - they had some good dishes that I liked. You just can't compare it to proper Chinese places from another city. ~ Atmosphere: Really cramped, and I mean really cramped. I was sat so close to the guy behind me that every time he moved his arm he kept ramming me in the back. Felt like I was getting a deep tissue massage during my meal. ~ Customer Service: Just OK. Very no nonsense. You show up, get a menu where you check off what you want, give it to the server, and then your food shows up. As I'm already familiar with what I was ordering I'm not sure how helpful the servers would be when it comes to offering guidance. Food came out at respectful times though. ~ Food: The food can't compare to proper dim sum you'd get, but given that it's Barcelona it was OK. I imagine if you just moved here from a place where you get regular dim sum this would scratch the itch. HITS: - "City" Pho. The broth was really nice and slightly sweet. No authentic pho flavours at all so I wouldn't call it pho and more so their own take on a noodle soup with rice noodles, but the dish was very good and something I'd definitely order again. - Shuijiao - We ordered beef and pork shuijiao. These are boiled dumplings. They were pretty good and had a good amount of juice inside. They use a lot of different seasonings in their meat which is not as traditional. It made it really difficult to tell the difference between whether you were having the pork or the beef just by taste because they both have the same powerful seasoning so the actual taste of the meat didn't shine through. A good dish, though don't bother to get the 2 different meats to give both a try as they taste virtually the same. - Steamed Pork Belly - Decently tasty. It wasn't amazing, but the pork was cooked well and the flavours were nice. If I came here again, I probably wouldn't order it though. It was just OK - I'd rather check something else out. - Beef Guotie - SKIP THIS ONE!!! I'm not even comparing it to traditional Chinese guotie here. It had a good taste, but it was VERY VERY dry. Th way they do it is with an open pocket wrap as you can see in some of the pictures so there is literally no juice inside and is extremely dry. I had to dip them in some of my pho broth to make it edible because it did not feel great on my tongue at all. Good flavours, but just no. I do not recommend this dish at all! --- Mosquito is a solid 3 stars from me. If you're starved for Asian options in Barcelona, this is a good place that scratches the itch. Don't compare it to more traditional food as this place has their own spin on things but they do know their way around flavours. Wasn't the biggest fan here tonight. Note that they don't serve the pho soup or noodles soups for dinner. Only lunch. So tapas only for dinner. Be aware that the kitchen closes about an hour before closing so we saw many people try to come in but unfortunately turned away. Pork ribs were okay. Won ton soup was nice and hot but the soup was VERY salty. Couldn't drink the broth. Hargow shrimp dim sum was VERY thick. Almost 3-5 times thicker than a normal dim sum. Personally, I think this place is overrated. I don't know why I didn't get it before, but asian tapas? Come on. That's just dim sum. DUHH. So, of course, you'll find your typical dumplings here. But! The skin is homemade! So, pretty authentic - if you stick to the regular dumplings. I however, saw their hao gao (shrimp dumplings, dim sum style) which I am compulsively obsessed with, so I ordered that as well. What I received were these gigantic dumplings, with skin that was 4x as thick as it should be, and shrimp minced into a paste (the smaller types of shrimp). Thattttt is not how hao gao should be - the skin should be very thin, and the shrimp should be big and cut up into pieces. The rest of the food was also mediocre - the duck was only moderately tender, the bamboo shoots overly salty. Again the normal dumplings seem to have been the highlight of the night. Also, this place is tinyyy! But, at least it's open consistently, so you don't have to wait until 8pm. Come earlier, and you should be able to find a table. Otherwise, you should call for a reservation. So my final two cents? Asians, you'll have tasted better. Go home - your badass mother will probably scold you for even thinking about coming here and whip you up her secret dumpling recipe that tastes oh so good. Everyone else? I had a bowl of vegetarian noodles with dumplings. The food itself was good, tasty, and what I was expecting. However, it did not blow my mind. For the price, I recommend the place, especially if you want to try more foods on their menu. The server was nice, swift, and kind! While in the Barcelona sea of tapas, a dim restaurant appeared. The food was HIGHLY disappointing, and I felt mislead by the reviews on here..I'm here to set the record straight. The atmosphere is alright, the service was okay, the restaurant had a fair amount of people in it (20+). There was no wait on Tuesday afternoon! The restaurant is categorized as dim sum, but their selection is very limited. Don't be expecting shumai (pork and shrimp square dumplings) , or haigow (translucent casing shrimp dumplings). What we did have -Beef Wonton Noodles -Char siu bao (BBQ Buns) -Lotus Wrapped Rice -Shrimp dumplings The noodle were like instants noodles and the broth was sad. The Char siu bao's bread had an undercooked texture. Shrimp dumplings just tasted so wrong. It came in a bath of soy sauce and squirted out soup when you bit into it. Have to disagree with the negative reviews on this place. Yes the place is on the smaller end, but so were 90% of the other restaurants we dined in during our 8 day stay in Barcelona. Still being just two of us, we were seated with no wait. The service was perfect. Our orders were taken a couple minutes after we sat down, compared to other restaurants where we would have to wait at least 15 minutes before anyone even looked at us. Being from NJ/NY area, this is the kind of prompt service I prefer. My girlfriend and I are both Chinese and we personally enjoyed the food here. We got the Thai fish cake, soup dumplings, vegetable dumplings, kimchi, and pork belly. We went in with open minds and the flavor of everything was done well and very enjoyable. As for those bashing on the food here... you're in Spain.. at an Asian fusion tapas place. That's like going to a tapas place in China and expecting authentic Spanish cuisine. Based off of Yelp, Mosquito is one of the more popular Asian restaurants around Barcelona, which isn't surprising, given the little competition it has. It seems as if management was a bit confused when choosing which ethnicity cuisine to focus on and ultimately gave up and decided to include a little bit of everything - Vietnamese pho, Korean kim chi, Chinese dim sum. Being of Chinese heritage and having grown up in a community with endless mom and pop shops with traditional Asian food, Mosquito's food ended up being just passable. To me, it was a recreation of an assortment of Asian dishes with average quality taste. The ginger beer was on point though. It's a nonalcoholic fruit cooler with a gingery kick -- I recommend it if you're not averse to the taste of ginger or trying out a more exotic drink. Setting wise, the restaurant is tiny with cramped seating, meaning there's most likely going to be a wait to be seated. read more

They had menus in English which I wish I didn't need, but they were necessary for us :( The place was packed even at a non-traditional time! I think we went around 4pm. We waited 15 minutes and then were seated. We really enjoyed the fried duck, guotie (pork I think), and the "city" pho. Totally delicious!! The dumpling soup was a bit bland for us (even for my friend who is very sensitive to spices), and the lemon & butter mushrooms were only OK. One of my friends goes to dim sum all the time, and she enjoyed the food. I don't think she was blown away, but we all enjoyed ourselves! read more

Dark and bustling inside This place really ain't what you expect when you head in off the sunny Barcelona street outside. This place has a great atmosphere that makes you feel you could be miles away from Europe. The place is always mobbed and with good reason. The food is amazing. We had deep fried and boiled dumplings and both tasted spectacular. One beef and one veggie, I can't fault either of them. We also shared a huge bowl of spicy beef soup. (I forget the exact name) It was again lovely, total taste sensation and a welcome change from all the tapas we had eaten to that point. The array of bottled beer on offer is huge, with brands from across the world. Something there for everyone. Final thought/hint. Menu is only in Spanish and Chinese. We asked one of the waitresses for a bit of help though and she kindly ran through the whole thing separating the beef from the pork and the soup from the dumplings. To be honest, I was a little apprehensive before coming here. I'm currently studying abroad and I've been missing home-cooked Chinese food for a while, so when I saw Mosquito's menu, I had to give it a try. The restaurant is definitely a small hole-in-the-wall type, but it had bar seating and a wide range of drinks, cocktails, and craft beer if you're into that. By no means was I expecting it to be authentic Chinese, but I was honestly pleasantly surprised by the plates that I did have (side note: it's more like Asian tapas style, not traditional dim sum, but I didn't mind!). For three people, we ordered 2 char siu baos (BBQ pork steamed buns), 1 order of pork dumplings, 1 order of veggie guotie, hargow (also known as xiajiao), Sichuan beef, and 2 wonton soups, which came out to ~30 euros. My favorites were the pork dumplings and the hargow, although both of those are misleadingly named, imo. The pork dumplings were more like wontons; similar to traditional xiaolongbao's, they were served in a bamboo bowl in a bath of soy-based sauce with a delicious soup inside the wonton that squirts out when you bite into it. The hargow was also very tasty, although unlike the traditional bite-sized shrimp dumpling I was expecting, these were much bigger (fist-sized?) and contained several pieces of shrimp. They were served with a delicious soy-based sauce and a pleasantly surprisingly spicy oil. The charsiu bao was also especially light and fluffy. The rest of the food was decently good: nothing blew my mind beyond repair, but overall, it hit the spot for semi-traditional Chinese food. What is everyone talking about?!? the food at mosquito is inedible! Grossest 'Peking duck' (Anec fregit) I've ever had the displeasure of tasting. Whatever sauce that was, it was unlike any other Peking duck with hoisin sauce I've ever had, in a bad way. We couldn't eat it. I tried, I was starving. Vegetable dumplings?!? That's just shredded cabbage in there with a bit of scallions. Super boring, husband couldn't eat it, I ate it as the saddest second most edible item. Having lived in Taipei, Mosquito takes me right back. With the food, the typical Taiwanese menus, the drinks and even the kitchen staff. The only thing missing is the actual front staff. Food-wise things are a little bit of a quick-fix and things aren't made fresh. But that doesn't mean it's not good! I've been craving Asian good BADLY towards the end of our two week trip so the BF and I started looking for Asian places to eat. He found this place and suggested we try it. Honestly, I'm from Southern California so we have some good Chinese food there and nothing from this place was recognizable to what I'm used to back home. We ordered Shumai, pork ribs, Szechuan beef, crispy duck, fried beef dumpling, cha siu Bao and the steam buns. The only thing that was slightly decent was the crispy duck with the steam buns. Everything else had a very weird seasoning/after taste and it was very salty. Shumai was fishy. If they didn't have sriracha sauce, I don't think I could have kept eating the food. PLEASE do yourself a favor and DO NOT ORDER the Szechuan beef. I don't know what that was but that thing was naaaaaaasty. Everything else was mediocre at best. 3 star for cheap prices, food came out fast and it being decent. Hopefully the other food taste better but the things we ordered was just whatever. read more

My family and I stopped here on a whim during a hot day touring the Gothic Quarter. It turned out to be one of the best meals we ended up eating in Barcelona. As a native San Franciscan, I'd like to think I know more about dim sum than the average Barca tourist - my benchmark being hole-in-the-wall dim sum joints in Chinatown. Then again, I like to think alot of stuff, so just humor me on this one :) Mosquito is an AMAZING find in Barca. The menu is in Catalan and Chinese so even if you're well versed in dumplings, you may need a bit of translation help like I did. The servers were all lovely and on point. I waited 30 minutes to be seated which wasn't bad considering the popularity of this place. On the dumpling menu I had the xiao long bao (soup dumplings), pork dumplings and pork and shrimp siu mai. I also had the grilled aubergine (eggplant) with peanut sauce. It was yummy and the perfect palette cleanser. I even finished off one of their bottles of Sriracha because well...it's pretty much a fact that Sriracha makes everything better. The total came to: 3 dumplings, 1 side of aubergine and 1 beer = 20 euro. Not bad! read more

Perfect Asian Tapas! All of the dumplings are great, I specifically loved the beef and shrimp ones. Also the fish cakes (dont remember the name) are good. Please order the noodle salad (the only option below the noodle soups that doesnt come with soup, so its cold and refreshing). It comes with chicken, mint leaves, basil leaves, sprouts, carrots, rice noodles, rice vinegar and lots of other refreshing ingredients! Also, the mushrooms with butter were very good! I went crazy here and ordered almost everything so I would suggest you do the same. For dessert I had the chocolate Mochy. If you are expecting great Chinese food or dim sum, do not come here! I usually yelp my meals and have great experiences but the asian food (mostly Chinese dishes) at this restaurant was terrible. I came here hoping to have pho for dinner since it was shown on a photo of the menu here on yelp. Unfortunately, that waitress said that it is served only for lunch. So instead, we ordered from their dinner menu. We had pork shuijiao (pork dumplings), vedella pebre sichuan (sichuan style beef), pancetta al vapor (pork belly), and an aubergine (eggplant) dish from the 'cold' dishes in the menu. I can tell you everything that was wrong with each dish: Pork dumplings - Pork was a bit raw and pink and not steamed long enough. I could possibly get food poisoning. Sichuan beef - This should not be listed as a Sichuan dish as they've used the wrong sauce. They used a soy sauce rather than a 'Sichuan' flavoured sauce which is red chilli pepper spicy/oily. Also, the beef was way overcooked and chewy. They probably recooked pre-cooked beef... Pork belly - Was actually okay...but sloppy. Basically cooked pork belly slathered in a soy sauce. Definitely not the proper good stuff you can get in Vancouver. Aubergine dish - was slathered in peanut sauce. The menu didn't even state that there was peanut sauce on the aubergines. This was also definitely not an authentic Chinese dish either... Overall, I would not come back here for food but it does seem like a great place for drinks. Prices were affordable (our bill came to ~€15 for 2 ppl) but quality of food is severely lacking. Even with the affordable price I don't recommend anyone to have Chinese food here. Maybe I'll come back to try their pho for lunch if I'm feeling adventurous but most likely not. Service was okay. read more

Mosquito is such a pleasant surprise! Given its location and its niche as an "asian" restaurant, I thought it would an overpriced disappointment. To the contrary! Mosquito has some of the best pan-asian food in town, and at a terrific price point! With high ceilings and a surprisingly cozy atmosphere, Mosquito is a bit enchanting! There are many things I love about this restaurant: the atmosphere is casual and friendly. The variety of dumplings, salads, and other dishes is astounding. Better yet, everything is absolutely delicious! The first time I went, we ordered a bunch of different small dishes to share. We all liked everything so much that we ordered a second round: fabulous! The wait staff is timely, if not friendly, and for the incredibly low price of this high-quality food, who even cares? I'm certainly not the only one who feels so positively about Mosquito. Indeed, on most night's you'll most likely need to wait (especially on the weekend). I asked for a Coke but they only had organic Coke so I decided to give that a try and it tasted like it had tamarind in it.
