Amazing spot in the Eixample neighborhood, packed with locals and tourists alike. Make a reservation as it gets packed quickly (or alternatively show up "early" at 7pm and get a spot). The restaurant specializes in seafood and has Spanish / fusion dishes which are all absolutely amazing. We came twice during our 2 week trip because we quickly fell in love with the food and ambience. Our favorites were the "Obama" croquettes, razor clams, octopus and tuna with nori. The seafood here is so fresh but can be a bit pricey for the simple dishes (eg., razor clams). Worth it if you love the seafood cooked to perfection, but not if you're looking for something more. Their fancier dishes (eg., octopus or tuna with nori) are an explosion of flavors. I was hesitant to get the tuna as it sounds like a typical fusion dish you'd get in a Japanese restaurant in the states but it's a combination of flavors with a slight kick at the end that are absolutely mindblowing. I forgot where I found out about this restaurant but I was so glad I made my way here! I was a solo diner but the waiter took good care of me. The Obama croquette is filled with cuttlefish stuffing and it was so good! I ordered one but I can easily eat another one, but there were so many other things I wanted to try on the menu. The beef tartare was standard, doesn't really standout but it was good nevertheless. The foie gras came with some nuts and it was a good balance, very delicious as well. And I still wanted to try one more dish but the waiter told me the item I wanted to order was too much for myself, so he recommend me to order another smaller item. Which I didn't really enjoy because I thought it was a meatball but it ended up being a fried fritter as well. And he underestimated my appetite because I definitely could've ate more. Paco Meralgo was our first meal upon landing in Barcelona, and I'm so glad it was because it really set the tone for our trip. We had a reservation, thankfully, because the place filled up real quick after opening. And they noted that my partner has a gluten intolerance, providing an allergens menu so we could be sure of which dishes he could and could not have; always super appreciated, especially when traveling! Additionally, all of the staff were so friendly and helpful, happy to make recommendations as far as the most popular/their favorite dishes, and the amount of food we were ordering. As chronic over-orderers, this was extremely helpful for us. We ended up getting oysters, patatas bravas (not safe for gluten intolerance, but I inhaled these babies myself), seasonal vegetables with romesco, grilled razor clams, and grilled octopus. Everything was excellent, but the octopus in particular was absolutely incredible. One of the best-cooked octopuses I've ever consumed, and the thin piece of iberico lardo on top added an amazing flavor. My partner says that the octopus is in conversation for the single best bite we ate on our whole two-week trip across Europe. The space itself is very nice; definitely a bit cramped, but that's not too uncommon throughout Barcelona, we found. It's pretty casual with a very lively ambience to it. Found this restaurant on Michelin Guide and they have a Michelin Bib Gourmand rating - I filtered by lowest cost in the app btw. I got a reservation for the communal table and we shared the table with another family from out of town. The food was amazing and the staff was courteous. The menu was divided into cold/hot tapas, specialties, and meat - there might be one or two more sections but I forgot to take a picture of the menu. We ordered the beef tenderloin chunks with garlic (5 stars), razor clams (5 stars), courgette blossoms (5 stars), bread with tomato (4 stars), tuna tartar (3 stars), Russian salad (3 stars), octopus with seaweed and ham (3 stars), the bomba (3 stars), frozen truffle (3 stars), and Catalan custard (4 stars). I want to be clear that 3 stars isn't bad, it's decent but not what I was expecting. If you're from California and frequent sushi bars, stay away from all tuna tar tar in general. The octopus was a bit on the salty side and there are Korean influences and California is full of these kinds of dishes. So stay away from fusion food in general when in Spain. I now realize I'm more satisfied with the traditional tapas because we don't get that at home. It does not mean that the fusion dishes were no good here. Came as a solo walk in on a Friday night. The place was booming. There's two floors and most seats had groups enjoying the company over some tasty cuisine. They were able to seat me fairly quickly which was nice considering how busy it was. The food: please do yourself a favor and get the tuna tartare. This came as a recommendation and did not disappoint. I was offered tomato bread with it, which was a solid paring. Also got the patatas bravas which came with this delicious hot sauce pairing. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to Paco Meralgo. We came in on a Thursday night and it wasn't quite packed yet, but does get more full later on at night. So I'd say get an early reservation to beat the crowds. Every worker we encountered was great. Gave us great options to try as we were indecisive. I like the layout of the restaurant because the seating is spread out and in different parts of the restaurant. I also like that the restroom are upstairs. I have to say their food is a bit on the pricey side for tapas BUT for the quality you are getting it's worth it. First, their drink menu is great and they don't skimp on the alcohol. I had a bottle of wine which paired well with our meal. Now the food. Hands down the best patata bravas we've had in Spain so far (and we've had them with each meal). The sauce that they use is what makes amazing. Don't miss out on them. We got the ribeye and it was cooked perfectly! Now the dessert. This had to be one of the best desserts I've had. This tapas bar was recommended by our hotel, and we are so glad we went! Waited for about 30 minutes outside with no reservation, but they offer you drink service while you wait. Victor was our waiter, and he was great. Service is excellent. We started with Potatas bravas, that comes with spicy mayo and hot sauce, which came out at the same time as the big spicy meatball. Which I don't believe actually has meat in it but it was delicious. Tomato bread was great. Scallops were good, but the tuna tataki was the star of the meal. Paco Meralgo shows up with some frequency in travel publications as an excellent option for tapas in the neighborhood, so my wife, brother in law, and I decided to eat lunch here our first day in Barcelona. The atmosphere feels bright and open with large windows looking out onto the street and clean white tile punctuating both sides of the dining room. The crowd comprised mostly locals and we were the only tourists in the restaurant. Our waiter spoke English fluently and helped us with ordering. He also coursed out the meal at a comfortable pace, which prevented us from over ordering and over eating. The tapas here tasted excellent. Highlights included the black squid ink croquettes, the surprisingly spicy patatas bravas, the fresh red tuna tartar, rustic pan con tomate, and the creamy crab brioche. The only tapa of the 6ish we ordered that fell flat was the doughy and bland cuttlefish meatball. Prices here run slightly more expensive than the typical tapas restaurant, but the quality is high and overall we felt good value. If you are staying in this part of Eixample, Paco Meralgo is a worthy option for a leisurely tapas meal. read more

Hands down, this place is my favorite restaurant in Barcelona. I went here for a nice dinner during my first trip to Barcelona about 6 months ago and had to come back again during my second trip that I took about 2 1/2 weeks ago. The venue itself is very cozy and interactive and the waiters are always pleasant. The food here is beyond amazing. Between the first and second experiences, here are all the dishes we ordered (since we ordered some of same ones the second time): both types of croquettes, salmon tartar, steak tartar, foie gras and octopus in sauce. The fois was SO good that we had to get two orders of it both time, but the octopus dish is definitely my favorite. The wine is very reasonably priced as well. I would recommend this place to anyone in Barcelona because they really give you a five star experience with the food at such a great price. A must-go!! read more

Another one of my favorite spots for tapas in Barcelona, the only reason I gave Paco Meralgo a 4 instead of a 5 is that their winter menu / experience is really lacking compared to their summer menu. I came here a few years ago in March with high expectations because I had heard great things, but thought it was a bit overrated. I came back the next year in June and was completely blown away. My friend also told the host that it was my birthday so they put on a big celebration and sang to me - so fun! The food was wonderful. However, the service was the worst we've had in Europe over several weeks. Our server's name was Jaume, pronounced "Yoma". He didn't like us from the start because we were tourists, frequently ignoring us, and getting sharp with us when we had any questions. The locals who sat next to us at the bar were much more helpful and nice, offering suggestions on the menu etc. Our server forgot to put in a tapa order, and when we reminded him very patiently, he didn't apologize, and seemed upset. (This was an order he recommended to us initially!) We tried to be very patient and accommodating through the whole experience, as we realize this is a busy time of day. By at the end of the order we realized he overcharged us for a glass of sangria. 18.50euro!!! When we asked him about it multiple times, he said it was correct. He then continued to avoid eye contact. We had to ask the manager, who said it was a mistake, and changed it to 5euro. No apology from the server!! I attached a picture of him. Making the midday drive from Valencia to Barcelona, a 3.5 hour trek up the coast that costs about €45 without accounting for gas, it was just past 21h00 that a party of two set out looking for dinner, almost every reputable Tapas Bar in town unfortunately packed with several "reserved" tables sitting empty, the eventual decision to wait it out at Alta Taberna Paco Meralgo based on a quoted wait of "a few minutes" that actually stretched on for just under an hour. Without doubt a well established favorite of locals as well as tourists, the double-sided bar and ever-evolving menu scrawled in the window seeing lines from 20h00 opening until a post-midnight close every day of the year save for Christmas since 2002, Alta Taberna is part of the Grup Olivé Restaurant Group, their holdings entailing five spaces with the one on Carrer de Muntaner easily the most popular. Proposed as a Spanish menu with Mediterranean and Catalan influences, the kitchen-centered room constantly in motion with guests in-wait given the choice of being constantly bumped into indoors or standing in streets full of cigarette smoke, those who either have the foresight to make reservations or who are willing to wait are eventually granted seating at either the bar or one of several high-tops, the menu available in both English and Spanish a sprawling list of Meats, Cheeses, Sandwiches, Vegetables and Desserts. Minimal in its decoration, chalkboard specials, painted brick walls and mirrors the only thing to distract diners from a bounty of ingredients on display amidst a room whose decibel level occasionally reaches alarming values, it was just past 22h10 that seats were allocated at the bar in front of a young bilingual Female, the decision to order in courses encouraged and eventually entailing fourteen plates served over the course of nearly two hours. Truly a sight to behold, the multitude of stations all working at a rapid pace to churn out plates for what must easily be seventy guests at peak times, it was not long after ordering that the first round of food arrived, a plate of Spain's famous Acorn-fed Iberico Ham and Bread brushed in Tomatoes simple and pristine while three types of Croquettas were all creamy and delicious, though one does wonder about the naming of a Squid Ink-packed version after America's 44th President... Heavily focused on fried bites, the Tempura Vegetables with Teriyaki an out of place dish that was both unimpressive and overpriced at €8.10, those choosing to stick to Spanish classics will be well-rewarded by the crispy Potatoes in spicy Mayonnaise while the Omelette of tiny shrimp is served as a delicate net containing only enough Egg and Flour to hold it all together. Offering items on Bread as "Montaditos," the Steak Tartare a bit too finely chopped and thus mushy amidst Yolk and Herbs, another great three-bites was found in the seared slice of Duck Liver served atop Nut Bread with poached Apple, the flavors sweet and unctuous and a great lead-in to the tender Octopus served in the cooking liquid of Paprika and Onions. Rounding out savories with Goat Cutlets in Onions and Carrots, the plate appearing to be little more than Bone actually hiding several ounces of lean and nutty Flesh, it was with the a la minute Mille-Feuille sold out that dessert instead included a tender Sponge Cake completely soaked in Chocolate and Booze alongside hot Crema Catalana and an unattractive but outstanding slice of Torrejas that was golden on the surface and sweet with the texture of Condensed Milk within. read more

We tried the 1) Pepper beef fillets tapas (amazing!), 2) Razor clams (a bit on the rare side), 3) Shrimp omelette (the shrimps were very sweet!), 4) Tomato baguette (tomato juice, olive oil and tomato seeds on a toasted baguette. Paco Meralgo is a very witty play on words - if you split the two words up, it's Pa Comer Algo meaning to eat something in Spanish. The restaurant is beautiful, really homey yet modern interior with a lot of light. Unfortunately, the food just isn't as good as before. Must get: Navajas, cuttlefish croquets, cod fritters Don't get: pan con tomate (too soggy, not as good as many other restaurants in Barcelona...and pricy too), gambas al ajillo (the shrimps were tiny and you only get 5 for 20 euros) When to go: Nice place to go for lunch since the sunlight really lights the place up. Make sure to make a reservation though, it gets really packed especially on weekends. Other tips: If you want to get pan con tomate, ask for a smaller portion first. For 4 people ask for a 2 persons portion. When I went the first time, their prawns from palamos were really good (if in season) and their grilled scallops. Spacious restaurant with a modern flair. Friendly staff. We tried the following tapas: -Bacalao- codfish drenched in olive oil, topped with tomatoes, and olives. Fresh seafood that just melts in your mouth. -Fried oyster- sweet, delicate, creamy -Anchovies- drenched in olive oil with some lemon zest, simply delicious and not too salty. They were perfect with the house (tomato) bread. -Langostinos hervidos- grilled sweet, succulent prawns -The dessert was an almond sponge cake soaked in a creamy rum broth Well worth the price given the premium quality of the seafood. The best tapas I had -- by far -- over my week in town. I had gone to very good places recommended by others I trusted. Then, well into the week, I find out a foodie friend in Manilla has extended family in the area. This is the recommendation. Great one. Yes, there are a lot of tourists, but not all. That doesn't automatically make it bad either. I made sure I had a reservation. I was placed at the far end of the bar. It was between a couple from Florida and a French Canadian ex-pat. It didn't take long before we were talking. The ex-pat led me through some of the menu. She had eaten here many times. At one point, not only did we share thoughts on the favorite dishes, but we did some sharing too. The tomato bread was the best I had. The garlic shrimp was excellent. The breaded and fried anchovies perfect. The razor clams very nice. Some of the best steak tartar I've had. This was our first meal of the day and we were starving so we went a little crazy with ordering. The bread pieces are huge and it's drowning in tomate, just the way I like it. It's not too oily and it isn't as soggy as it's found at most places. encenalls carxofes (4.90 euros) fried artichokes. these are found all over Spain and whenever you see it on the menu, order it! patates braves (3.90 euros) some of the best patates braves we've had. The potatoes were cooked all the way through, crispy, and we all loved that it was a bit spicy. croquetes pollo (1.40 euros per unit) The croquetes are not to be missed. My favorite! Perfectly crisp and fried and the insides are delicious. croquetes de sip (1.50 euros per unit) if I remember correctly, I think this was squid. It's black inside and rolled up into a ball. It's creamy and really good. montadito salmon (3.10 euros per unit) montadito are like crostinis, crusty bread topped with something. In this case, it was smoked salmon and because the salmon was of high quality, this was delectable. montadito brie (2.95 euros per unit) It's brie. You can't go wrong with a thick piece of melted brie. xipirons (11.90 euros) Fried baby squid. I really enjoyed this but my friends didn't. I don't think many people enjoy eating whole baby squids. trufes gelades (1.05 euros per unit) We ordered this as a desert. It's really small, not too sweet, and to be honest, probably wouldn't order it again. Overall, this is a must visit tapas restaurant. The food quality is very good. I really enjoyed their patatas bravas, pan con tomato and anything done with salmon. We ordered about 4 different salmon tapas and they all were excellent.
