I have a natural 3b curl pattern, and I wanted to have effortless, healthy looking straight hair for the summer. She gave me exactly that. My hair was left silky smooth, straight, healthy, and invincible against humidity, rain, and even beaches/swimming pools after visiting Mora. My updated review: Mora Miranda is simply the best in the D.C. area if you desire hair straightening. I have been going to Mora for over a decade for her straightening, coloring and cutting expertise. She excels at all three. Mora uses Milbon's Liscio hair straightening products, which do not use, according to Milbon's website, "formaldehyde-based ingredients or any ingredients that are known to release formaldehyde or related toxins." Mora takes her clients' safety very seriously and she follows all the steps Liscio requires to ensure a beautiful job each time. I could not give Mora a higher recommendation. This is an updated review: I still go to Mora every 5-6 months for touch ups over the last few years. I love how my hair is thriving with this method. My hair is the longest and prettiest it's ever been and hair is so easy to manage! My edges are filled in now. I'm still working on more thickness (I have naturally fine 4c textured hair) but it's gotten so much fuller over the years. In between visits, I keep my hair in a protective style and my hair continues to thrive. I wished this could be a positive review, but Mora damaged my hair very badly with the Japanese straight perm she gave me. Her technique might work on some hair types, but it was far too strong for me and I've been getting this service done for over a decade at other places, but wanted to try a place in DC and she sounded like she knew her stuff. She uses a gel instead of the cream, which is hard to control. Every other place I've ever gone uses the cream, which is far superior but requires technique. read more

She takes meticulous care to make sure that the treatments and touchups are done thoroughly with zero damage to the hair. Okay, I hate to write this, but feel like I have to with yet another KGB deal going on for this salon. I bought the deal going on around May for the highlight & cut with Mora. Let me say, she's very nice, and I know she really does have a good heart, and means well, but oh my did she destroy my hair. I have curly, dark blonde hair and wanted to lighten it up for the summer. Not only did it seem like she was uncomfortable doing foils, she went to wash the highlights out from the back of my head before even getting to the highlights around my face... maybe forgot what she was doing, and ended up getting all of my hair wet before putting the rest of the highlights on, and when she realized, said OUT LOAD "Oh S***". Not a great feeling. I've been getting foils done for about ten years, I know what a botch job is. Please please let me advise you NOT to go to her for foils. She did go on and on about how much she loves doing the straightening treatments, and I bet she does a stellar job in providing that service. I just don't think color (or cut for that matter) is where her expertise lies. read more

I feel SO BLESSED to have found Mora!!! She literally CHANGED MY LIFE (and I don't care how cliche that sounds - it's true.) MORA MIRANDA is a Gem! I found her through my internet searches for stylists who are able to do the Japanese Hair Straightening treatment for black women with natural hair like mine. My hair had been chemical-free for 7 years, and I got tired of trying to do the whole natural hair thing which really just ended up with me damaging my hair with heat from blow-drying and flat-ironing it all the time. So I decided it was time to do something different. I started researching the Keratin treatment and treatments like it. After doing some reading I reasoned that the Keratin treatment isn't very promising for my type of hair, but I learned about the Japanese Hair Straightening (which I believe is also called "Thermal Re-conditioning") - and was really impressed by everyone's reviews and videos about it (thanks, YouTube!). I searched for stylists in DC who do the Japanese Hair Straightening and I am so, so lucky to have found Mora Miranda!!! I found her website (www.straighthairdc.com) and literally called her that same day to ask questions about whether or not it would work on my hair. Not only was she positive that it would be able to thoroughly straighten my hair, she was extremely EXCITED for me to come in to do my hair! My natural hair is very kinky, with extremely tight coils (4c), and really THICK (my mother always used to joke that I have enough hair for 3 people), and-- I told Mora this-- I don't think I've EVER met a hair stylist who was that excited to do my hair! I made the appointment with her right then even though I live in Boston. I have family in DC and was planning on visiting them for Christmas so she was nice enough to work around my schedule and squeeze me in while I was in town on a random Sunday (even though the salon was closed). I was a little nervous about the treatment at first but she put me right at ease. She's been doing this treatment for more than 15 years now, even before it became popular here in the States. She did SUCH a great job! Like I said, I have enough hair for 3 people, so it took a VERY long time. We started at 10am and didn't end til around 5pm. She charged me $400, but it was worth every penny. It is honestly actually a very reasonable price for this type of treatment - you won't find anyone else who will charge this amount as most charge $500 or more. I've been to her for these treatments twice now and my hair is healthy, shiny, straight, and has grown so much- I would say it's the longest I've ever seen it! Mora Miranda is literally a MIRACLE worker. My hair has never been this straight and manageable in my life! She's also been super helpful in guiding me with post-treatment hair care practices - like recommending specific shampoo and conditioner treatments, answering any questions I have about maintenance (although with this treatment, there is really very minimal upkeep - you literally can pretty much just wash and go). I couldn't have found a better hair stylist, and I will definitely keep coming back to her for my re-touches every 5-6 months. I'm so glad I found Mora! I've been going to her at Salon Rafik for thermal reconditioning (aka Japanese hair straightening) for four years now. I've had the thermal reconditioning done several times a year since 2000 and with 35+ under my belt I can say with confidence that Mora is by far the best stylist I've been to; other stylists have caused breakage to my hair or left uneven spots, but I have not had any problems since going to Mora. I have been getting Japanese straightening/ thermal reconditioning for years. After so many botched touch ups, I must say this woman knows what shes doing and it shows in the current condition of my hair. The first time I got straightening was five years ago. I loved it but by the time I needed a touch up my hairstylist retired and I tried so hard finding replacements. I spent the next few years going to different hairstylists anytime I needed a touch up (usually every 6-7 months) and they had many things in common : They didn't know how to do African American hair (but claimed they did), they cut corners in the hair processing, didn't properly protect my ends during the reconditioning, they didn't care for the health of my hair, they grossly overcharged and the work was sub par. I suffered by attaining dry, frizzy, lifeless, and damaged hair.. I was really at my wits end when I discovered Mora and told myself this would be the last time I tried a stylist before giving up on JHS completely. I could tell immediately that she knew what she was doing and felt confident in her 15 years of experience. I was super excited to give her a try and I'm glad I did!!!! She took her time straightening and trying to undo the damage many of the half-assed "professionals" .did on my hair. ALL of the products she uses are excellent and top notch. My hair feels healthier and stronger than it ever has. And she is the only stylist I will ever see when I need a JHS and a trim. Most places charge up to $800 (sometimes their prices increases with length) for their lackluster Japanese straightening. But Mora charges $400 and it's well worth the cost. My hair is on it's way to excellent condition once again and I truly thank Mora for being so competent. Once again, the very talented Mora Miranda colored and cut my hair. Considering that I also have Japanese hair straightening, my hair still looks beautiful. Mora is very careful when coloring hair that has been Japanese straightened by conditioning and trimming it properly and applying an appropriate hair color. As a result, I can have beautiful hair that is both Japanese hair straightened (which I love!) and colored. It still looks healthy. She also gives a very precise hair cut, which I enjoy.
