The mammoth
Sasha F.

Ok so let's start with the back story: A 150 year old grande oak tree sat behind our back fence in an alleyway. This tree was pretty much as tall as trees get in the city of Tampa. Grande oaks are protected in this city, and if you do so much as sneeze on them the city will fine you. Well this grande oak decided to die on us and began slowly leaning on our back fence. One of the limbs decided to fall and literally crushed our metal shed and went straight through the wooden fence. It sounded like a bomb went off. This thing was coming down. So naturally we called the city saying their tree was falling. Apparently when oaks are alive its the cities but when they die and cause damage its ours. Fun. We had to pull a permit and pay for removal ourselves. So we began the tedious process of looking for a contractor. If you've never looked for a contractor listen up, it's hard. You get a million calls after going to one website. Most do not care what you want, they just want you to pay them. I literally had one tell me that they "wouldn't even come out for less then $500 and they charge for estimates". Some did not have the experience or equipment to deal with a mammoth grande oak. It's a super dangerous job. Your going up a hundred feet or more carefully taken down small 3 foot sections. You need professional and well trained climbers because people die doing this, and most importantly you need someone with a lot of insurance if anything happens. I live in Seminole heights, if that tree come down wrong it'll split my neighbors house in half and take the neighborhoods power lines with it. The estimates start rolling in and my bank account starts crying. There goes well...everything. How Moore & Smith Tree Care LLC came into my life: Then all of a sudden I got a call from a very happy go lucky English/Scottish accent guy. He tells me he's a local contractor and would love to give me an estimate. Then he tells me about his experience, and man oh man he's got a lot of experience. As I agree to get one final quote I realize he just called me on his personal cell. If you've never worked with a contractor you should know getting a contractors cell is something reserved for big CEOs dealing with huge properties not a school teacher living in Seminole Heights. He comes back with a quote by the next morning, and my bank account stops crying. It's literally $500 bucks less. He says no pressure and sends me a very detailed pdf of a contract outlining the work his crew will do. If I like it and would like to hire them just reply to the email. This was Wednesday. I reply and hire him. The city of Tampa typically takes about 3 days to get a permit. But Phillips(the contractor) wife was Downtown pulling the permit at 9 am on Thursday. We had the permit by the time I got home from work. That means the city Arborist came out the same day the permit was pulled. At this point I assume she's a magician. We scheduled for them to bring the mammoth down Saturday at 9:00 am. Saturday came and they knocked on our door at 9:00am sharp. Again not what I expected, a contractor on time. And it was Phillip knocking not someone from the work crew. They got straight to work. They worked the whole day carefully taking the mammoth apart piece by piece. The work crew was cheerful and meticulous. They were so very careful with the back yard. They were clean. They even took away the smashed shed and put up new fencing to replace the crushed fencing. That wasn't in the contract, they did not have to do that, but they did. They finished with daylight to spare. Phillips wife came to complete payment at the end of the day. What I think of Moore & Smith Tree Care LLC: This is literally the best contractor I've ever worked with in this city. This is the best customer service I've ever received.

Through some research on yelp and google, I eventually had 3 different companies come out and quote me. Including Dever and MIG. I don't leave many reviews on social media, but I trusted Dever's assessment of our situation above and beyond any of the other companies. His recommendations not only ended up saving us from Wasting unnecessary $, but he also identified a couple trees which he recommended for me removal, which I hadn't thought of. And he was right. When they were removed today it was obvious they had major termite damage internally, which I never would have been able to identify myself, nor did any of the other groups mention it. If we would have left those trees, we would have had some substantial risk to our home and other structures if they would have fallen naturally. Dever and his team's communication was quick and did exactly what they suggested they would, in the timeline they originally presented. I'm super pleased with the overall results, how they cleaned up, and the value of this entire project. Im not sure how far MIG travels but if you're in or around Williamson county I would definitely recommended talking with Dever and MIG.

He did replace the tent, all be it a cheaper version. But when it came to my patio furniture, he would only offer me a used patio furniture set from his personal home. When I did not accept he tried to low ball me on a price. Oh and the kicker is he DID NOT remove the tree. I had to get another company to finish what he started. So if you need tree removal please use someone else.

I had a large tree trimmed, which required a team member climbing high into the tree. There are two appointments - the first is to diagnose the problem and explain their methods and plans for your particular issue. The second appointment will happen few days later when one of their teams will come out to complete the work. They are thorough and do an excellent job cleaning up. We had the guys come out, review our tree removal needs, and give us a firm quote right there on the spot. Thereafter, scheduling was pretty easy too. They showed up when they said they were going to and started working immediately. From there, things went a bit wonky. They told us our job would be a one-day job. It turned into 3 days. Each day, the entire crew would just pack up and be gone, leaving each time and not communicating when, or even if, they'd be back to finish. Halfway through day-2, they moved our neighbors stuff around in their yard without their or our permission (didn't even talk to us about it). On top of that, they also messed up part of that same neighbor's yard dealing with the tree on that side of the job. The ground/grass there is pretty well destroyed, and they did not have permission to be on the neighbor's property. While expected, as we had some YUGE trees that needed to be removed (80-90 footers), our yard is completely destroyed. They did do a good job protecting our irrigation heads all throughout the yard though, even those right below where the huge trees fell. By the time they left for the 2nd day, still unfinished and not telling us when/if they'd be back, we were a bit exasperated. When we asked what was going on with the final piece of the job, the stump grinding, they said they didn't know and that it was a different team that came out and did that, and they had their own/different schedule and we'd just be worked in when they were available. Several days later, the stump grinding team showed up unannounced. They went to work on the stumps immediately, but left GIANT piles of sawdust in the yard where the stumps were ground. We weren't expecting that and calls/texts sent asking about it were not returned... finally they just sent us an invoice via email and we never heard anything else from them. We just paid the bill to be done with the job, but don't necessarily feel like we received everything we paid for in totality. Overall, they did the job, the trees and stumps are gone, and they didn't break anything that needed to be repaired, but we now have some additional work to the grounds (including our neighbors) that has to be done as a result.

We have worked with JB Tree Service on multiple occasions and were always "very happy & pleased" with the results. We contacted them for an estimate and they showed up quickly - very responsive and punctual. Based on the size and location of some of the trees we agreed and work schedule was arranged. JB noted a weather change with high winds and rescheduled 2 days earlier (originally Monday and moved it to Saturday instead) - we were happy for the change. They showed up with a 5 man crew, lawn mats, big tree grappler to handle the big trees, stump grinder, tree mulcher, etc... (they were SO well equipped - safe and efficient) at an affordable price for all they provide. It was truly amazing to watch all of them in action - a well choreographed tree removal team. We ares SO Happy with the results and an easy 5 Stars and High Recommendation! Our next door neighbor had a different tree service remove two trees that damaged her fence and yard, they took three days and did not even complete the removal of all the debris. Our JB Tree Team was in and out in several hours - and when they drove away all we could do was smile at the results.

They were very nice, cleaned up very well, were respectful of our neighbors' yards, and did the work in less time than they anticipated. Since then, we have used Quality Tree Surgery to aerate and overseed our yard, and to control aphids on a nearby hackberry (both are annual jobs). When we need to hire anyone to do work to our trees or yard going forward, I won't even bother getting other companies to quote the work. We just go straight to Quality Tree Surgery. I would expect any reputable company to schedule this or at a minimum communicate to the customer, which would remove any risk on both ends. Instead, they let my dogs out. Additionally, Robyn, who answers the phones, finds this to be a totally normal procedure and pushed back that they did not need to give me any notification. If my rottweiler had caused any issues I'm sure they would love the opportunity to come after me.
