Very Disappointing Experience…read more I was really looking forward to The Golden Girls pop-up at Wanderlust Wine Company. Unfortunately, the experience was nothing like what I had seen from the pop-ups in other cities. The biggest disappointment was how little there actually was to the experience. The kitchen table wasn't even there. The girls famously gathered around that table eating cheesecake. Blanche's bedroom was completely outside in a completely different building, which made the whole setup feel disconnected. Even the wall phone, which was supposed to have the girls talking did not provide the experience I had seen from Instagram reels from other cities. Then came the cocktails. At $16 each, I expected them to at least be made correctly. My Blanche Devereaux cocktail was made with club soda instead of Sprite. Club soda tastes like Alka-Seltzer. I had to ask for a different drink. The second cocktail, The Dorothy, was made with Prosecco and unfortunately wasn't good either. Even the one lady sitting at this isolated bar with me said her drink was bad too. They double charged me. Which is another major issue. My ticket was $23.34 including taxes and fees and the complimentary drink was supposed to be included, with only a one-cent charge when I arrived. Instead, I was charged an additional $23.08, including $11.54 for the drink that was supposed to be included in the ticket price. Is there an explanation? Will this be corrected? My credit card company has already been notified. But what a hassle I have to go through. Just scan my QR code, and don't charge me .01 cent. I paid my ticket and "free" drink. Also as a solo guest, I was also extremely uncomfortable with where I was seated. I was placed away from everyone else at a very narrow bar along the wall, completely isolated from the rest of the group. Honestly, it felt like being sent to the kids' table at Thanksgiving--off in another room away from the adults. It was humiliating and made an already disappointing experience even worse. The entire experience amounted to roughly 15 minutes of taking a few pictures, drinking a poorly made cocktail, and leaving. For what I paid and what was advertised, I expected something much more immersive and fun. I couldn't wait to leave. Thank God I didn't pay for parking. I'm extremely disappointed. I went in excited to celebrate one of my favorite shows and left feeling like I had wasted my time and money. Based on this experience, I would not return to Wanderlust Wine Company.

In fact quite a few breweries I guess go about their beer recipes differently than the PNW or the mountain states. Some people say it's the mountain water that adds to and is critical to a well made craft beer. So being in a different region and state that isn't in these areas I kind of was at times just a bit underwhelmed with some of the breweries we went to. They weren't necessarily bad but it wasn't what I was accustomed to I suppose. But there were a few breweries that were highly impressive and Southern Heights Brewery was one if them. Steve got a really good dark beer but I got an IPA that was really amazing. It was the Evergreen Terrace IPA. This was so good and very highly refreshing. Some IPA'S taste wise kind if blur together as far how memorable the drinking experience winds up being but this one was quite impressive and the rollout of the flavor profile was just great. Flavor highlights with this beer are piney, fruity, hoppy and a very appropriate amount of bitterness. It's also light bodied so the feel of this beer isn't likely to feel like a weight in your stomach which you definitely don't want if you come across a hot Texas day.

When my fella and I started going out this was a place he enjoyed visiting when we were in the area. What am I talking about, he still loves coming here even if I don't imbibe. Every time we stop by, we're greeted with the best and friendliest service. The grounds are always well maintained and the vibe is chill and relaxing. Everyone is also nice and in good spirits. Great place to get a drink and relax.

Starting on the lighter side of the beer spectrum from here we had the (512) Beer: 30 which is an American Light Lager. In the flavor profile for this beer you can find a natural sweetness, a crisp and clean presence as well. The beer was light bodied and very easy to drink more than one of! Moving to darker beer territory and the one that I liked maybe just a little bit better (but it was neck and neck) was the (512) Pecan Porter. This was a fun porter as it was on the nutty side of things as the name indicates. All the flavors blended in very nicely. Flavor features in this beer to find is sweetness, a coffee presence and of course the pecan flavor. The beer is nice and smooth and creamy in body. Two good beers from two different beer types made this beer exploration a little bit more well rounded.

I ended up trying the Frose which could have been mixed a little more, the wine was definitely separated out at the bottom. The charcuterie board was a little disappointing, one of those pre-made trays that were reminiscent of those buy on board boxes you'd get on airplanes. The inside was definitely IG/TT friendly, brightly colored, neon signs, like an influencers dream but on an early weekday afternoon it was quiet.

But I am so very glad that I got to experience a beer from Blue Owl. I really enjoyed it a lot! The beer that Steve and I had was called Spirit Animal. This beer was a sour and a pale ale that was kind if blended together it seemed making it very unique and tasty! Nothing in the flavor profile was too sweet about it at all. The sour feature was in full effect and it was great! Flavors to detect and have fun with this beer are sour, tart, hoppy and dryness. I think that part, the dryness I liked best. The beer is nice and light bodied which is a great fit for when Austin cranks up the southwest and summer heat!

Tucked away off Weletka Drive, it's one of those under-the-radar gems that locals love and travelers are glad to stumble upon. The space has a relaxed, backyard feel--plenty of open air, shaded picnic tables, string lights, and a welcoming, come-as-you-are vibe. Perfect for kicking back with friends or unwinding after a long drive. There was a food truck parked out front when we arrived, adding to the laid-back atmosphere. The beer? Legit. The West Coast IPA had a clean, bitter bite with a crisp finish--not overly sweet like so many others. I also tried the Amber Lager, which was smooth, balanced, and super drinkable, even in the heat. You can tell they care about what they're brewing--there's attention to detail, and nothing tastes phoned in. The staff behind the bar were happy to pour samples and chat through the lineup, which was a nice touch. Bonus points for the vinyl records spinning inside and the small-batch, seasonal options on the chalkboard menu--makes it feel like you're getting something unique each time. Whether you're a beer nerd, a patio sipper, or just looking for a good local stop with some character, Destination Brewing absolutely delivers. Great people, great beer, chill setting--I'll be back.
