LA has no shortage of donut shops in every neighborhood, so when we moved back to South Bay I was excited to figure out which donut shop would become *our* donut shop. It's Moon, and I don't even need to bother entertaining elsewhere. I rolled in at 8:00 on a Saturday morning to fully stocked display cases and didn't even have to wait in line. That's insane. Normally if you want your pick of the full menu you've gotta get up before the sun and haul it to beat the crowd. The guy at the counter is so cute! Every time I made a choice, he'd say, "Oooh fire" or "So goood" or "it's daaank." I love employees who have fun with their job, and aren't afraid to show their personality while interacting with customers. That kind of experience always makes me want to come back. These are the best donuts I've ever had. Super light, fluffy, not overly sweet, and in so many unique flavors! The Dubai and the Thai Tea were my favorite, only because I've never had anything like those before. Truly unique! I've never paid $45 for a dozen donuts in my life, but damn this is so, so worth it. The shop features traditional doughnuts as well as fancy doughnuts. The selection of doughnuts is vast. Plus they offer a selection of drinks to enjoy with your doughnuts. My son and i started coming in on Fridays after school and we both live this spot. He loves that they usually have round raised donust with little characters on them like Spiderman, minions, sharks and dinosaurs. I love that their donuts taste fresh and delicious. I've had their Boston cream and their house cronut filled with cream and strawberries. I really enjoyed both and look forward to to trying more of their flavors. The lady there is always very kind and usually gives my son a couple extra donut holes with his donut. Wish they had a place to sit and enjoy them but we usually just have them in the car. I went to pick up a too good bag with my friend. The donuts looked good. The person behind the counter was despicable. She was so rude. She said "What do you want". I told her I needed to look. A few moments later she said "Have you made a decision"? I'm still deciding. Then I noticed there were so many fruit flies and bats on the donuts. They were in the frosting, the strawberries and some in the orchard flowers. I was like there are flies in there with the donuts. Yeah she said. I was like I've changed my mind. She said "Good!" A few customers were ahead of me and the guy at the counter took care of them quickly. Lots of choices from standard, typical donuts to specialty ones as well as savory croissants and sandwiches. A popular local spot is Moon Donut in Torrance. This family-run bakery is best known for its custard-filled donut varieties, but the dizzying selection makes picking just one donut a challenge. Moon Donuts shares a lime-green strip mall with a smoke shop and a chicken shop. But on a weekend morning, all of the bustle is donut-focused; expect a steady stream of customers. The interior is brightly lit, industrial, and a little run-down. Shelves upon shelves of donuts are neatly organized in the displays to the right, while a short refrigerator section to the left is filled with grab-and-go beverages. The hot menu is displayed on flat screens behind the counter, and coffee fixings are stacked on a stainless-steel shelf in the corner. My partner and I arrived mid-morning on a Sunday, and the staff were quick to take our order. We decided on an Apple Fritter and a Cookie Cronut. Moon's fritter was unlike any I've ever had. Uniquely, it was filled with walnuts, but the apple flavor was minimal; perhaps the donut would be more aptly described as a "cinnamon-walnut fritter". The dough was dense, crispy, and syrupy (all pros to me), but the absence of apple held this fritter back from being one of my favorites across LA. Meanwhile, the cronut was an ambitious and delicious-sounding option that fell flat in practice. The cookie was overcooked and mostly tasteless, while the donut was essentially just a ring-shaped croissant; both components were inferior to something I could buy at Costco. Rarely do I leave a donut on the table (especially a premium and expensive one like this), but I simply couldn't choke this one down. Service was efficient, and our total clocked in above $9 (taking into account Moon's credit card surcharge). While the fritter had its positives, the cronut was simply unpalatable. I originally planned on getting just two or three donuts, but I ended up leaving with a whole bag because everything looked so good! A few seconds in the microwave or air fryer makes them taste almost fresh again. There were so many donuts that my partner ended up sharing them with his coworkers, and they were a huge hit. Man, I hate to do this because while they weren't my favorite as I don't go for the "exotic" donuts, I really never had any complaints or problems with these guys--especially as one of the few surviving spots in the area. But just now, all that changed. As a 5 AM customer, I am accustomed to light, fluffy, and warm donuts. I ordered an apple fritter, maple old fashioned, and a sugar twist. Seven-something for the bag and a buck with change in the tip jar. The girl working the counter was adorable and super sweet, no complaints there. The Apple Fritter: Hard. No doubt in my mind it's been on this earth for a day at least. A few times I bit down on a piece that made me genuinely concerned I had broken a tooth. I tried to be realistic--maybe they weren't big sellers, times are tough, and everybody is pinching their pennies--so I let it go and told myself the other two would be just fine. The Maple Old Fashioned: I plucked it from the bag a little miffed because my inner child really wanted a vanilla sprinkle, but there were none. First thing I noticed as I broke off a piece: also hard. But they are normally a little harder, right? Nope. This too bore the signs of a day-old donut. Had that been all, I might have just ignored it and moved on. The real issue was the strong aftertaste of what I believe was cinnamon--just enough to be noticeably bitter. Never in my life have I not finished a donut, but this was downright gross tasting. Part of me wonders if my palate was off, but it was too much for me and I quit. The Sugar Twist: Begging for a donut that had been calling my name throughout my early morning laundry duties, I eagerly reached for the sugar twist. I was met with the familiar grainy sugar coating and prepared to consume this lone donut with extreme prejudice for the failures of those that came before it... Folks, when I tell you this was more of a grocery store croissant dressed up like a sugar twist, I mean it. Strangely layered, and just not at all what you would think the ingredients of a donut could be assembled into without a complete disregard for the art. Back in the bag it went, and the morning officially became a complete wash. Looking over the reviews, I see no follow-up from Moon's on any of them. From what I saw, I apparently just picked three bad ones out of an entire shop of donuts. I fail to see how that is possible, but it's either that or, as I suspect, the result of an increasingly desperate economy and perhaps a dash of "don't give a f***k". If this review goes unanswered, I will not be coming back. Pursuing a refund seems silly, but I do believe some accountability and humility are in order because I don't think this was an accident. I believe it is more of a new business practice, and if you're going to tell me that these were all fresh and to the standards set in prior years, I will know that to be a lie--and that insult will be enough to ensure I never return. I ordered letter donuts for my boyfriend's birthday and was pretty disappointed. First, the letters were sloppy and the icing looked ok. As soon as I brought them home, we were really excited to try them out. To both of our surprise, they had zero taste! They weren't sweet. at. all. There wasn't any glaze and it was only blue icing, which wasn't sweet. I even called the store and asked about them and the lady said that's how they're done because it's too expensive to add glaze... wouldn't you think that the donuts' taste is as important as their look? I originally wanted some sweet bread but there's nothing in the area so I suggested donuts. We passed by moon donuts on the way to the pier so we stopped by. They have two different kinds of donuts. A 'regular' fridge and a 'fancy' fridge. The regular ones are the plain sugar, glaze, chocolate and sprinkles like you normally see at a donut shop and the fancier ones have different flavors like ube, cream, sprinkles/toppings, and so much more. We got a half dozen (11.99$) and thought we could pick anything but it's only out of the regular fridge. So we got those. She gave us 3 donut holes for my kids which was super sweet. The fancier donuts are priced at 3.50$ each. Which isn't bad but for what we wanted, it was out of our price range. But I will definitely be back to try some of those! They also do custom donuts too! The donuts were SUPER fluffy and so soft and so delicious!!! The sugar one was just *chef's kiss*. And the glaze was amazing ! We devoured them so quickly I wish we got a dozen!
