Delicious seafood! Montrio is a fine dining restaurant without the dress code. While we visited, mostly happy folk music played over the speakers, which completed the aesthetic well. I ordered the shrimp risotto as a starter to share and the arctic char as the entree. The food was served extremely quickly, and, in an unusual move, the appetizer was served simultaneously with the entrees. Both dishes were heavenly with the freshest fish imaginable. This was our second favorite dining place on our trip to the Monterey peninsula. The service was impeccable and friendly. It's across the street from the State Theater, so they seem to aspire be a classy place to accommodate the theater patrons. They're only open for dinner. A little on the pricier side, but the decor and atmosphere is really nice. The food was very good. I had the sea scallops and my husband had the grilled New York strip with fries. The bread pudding dessert was also excellent. A good restaurant for Monterey in a city that is a bit lacking in some elegant restaurants. I hope they continue to do well. Have been a long standing customer of Montrio for years and years and we finally returned this week to a disappointment. While the quality of food is good, the taste was just blah. My party all agreed there was a lack of salt and acid. Service and ambiance are still a 5! But food is just not worth the price anymore. Hope things improve! read more

I cannot recommend this spot enough!! The mixologist is hands down a wizard, you cannot convince me otherwise. The chef absolutely knows what he is doing. We got the Hell Hath No Fury and Lipstick & Leather cocktails- amazing. For our starters, we enjoyed a risotto fritter which was delightful! We also ordered the mac and cheese. Whoever made the cheese sauce probably overcooked the roux a little bit, as the sauce itself was a bit grainy. It took away from the experience we could have had with the mac and cheese BUT could not take away my five star review. For the mains, we ordered the mushroom ravioli and the capellini, both amazing!! So full of flavor. So elegant. For dessert we were convinced to get the white chocolate bread pudding with passion fruit ice cream as well as a scoop of mint ice cream on the side. Not trying to be dramatic here-- I wanted to cry with my second bite of the bread pudding. I will never come here and not order this dessert. It was, indeed, to die for. Our server, Haven, was incredible. A very thorough expertise of the menu, very attentive and warm. It was busy but he still made time to cater to each tables' needs. This place is a upscale restaurant with a lively atmosphere and a great place for a date or for a celebration. The staff are really nice but during my visit I think they might have been short handed since it took a long while for them to come by to say hi to us after we were seated. The food was good too but I won't comment on that yet since I have only been here once so far. I am from Los Angeles so I am not familiar with this area at all, parking was a little challenging but I did manage to find street parking about 2 blocks away and with a lot interesting shops in this area walking around was actually fun. I saw a few parking structures but I didn't any notice any signs if they are for public use or not. read more

Went in to check out the Happy hour/Dinner from a suggestion from my huge foodie group. What a horrible experience, first we sit at the bar and this bartender with blue hair is completely overwhelmed with 2 people sitting at the bar and maybe a server asking for a few drinks. We could hear her complaining about management. So we order 2 Vodka tonics with a splash of cranberry. The bartender tells us she can't make those drinks because she does not have "Well Vodka" so she says "I can only go by my computer for "well drinks " it says Rum or tequila. So we ordered 2 tequila sunrises and she puts tequila on ice and walks away? So we are waiting for 2-5min with these 2 cups of tequila and ice in front of us. So we leave. What a weirdo restaurant. The bartender made a point to tell us this Happy hour is ending soon and that it's been a nightmare because the management does not give her the information she needs to do her job. This place might be a great option for vegetarians as well. They offer lots of variety of delicious dishes, we enjoyed amazing mushroom polenta, quinoa with carrot, fried Brie, yummy kale salad, and finished the dinner with fabulous chocolate desert! Not to mention a great wine list!!! Even though we ended up being there during outdoor dine-in only (a sad part we didn't enjoy the great interior ), the staff made everything to make us feel welcomed. We came back here for the first time since they closed and everything was amazing. They reopened with a new chef and totally redesigned dining room. We had a New York strip, crab cakes, onion soup grantinée and mushroom and fava and risotto with prawns, everything was cooked perfectly. Min was our server and was very attentive and knowledgable, he recommended the steak instead of the scallops for my husband which ended up being the perfect choice. Cynthia the hostess was very sweet as I felt I was underdressed. She ensured me that my relaxed jeans were just fine! Haven made the night even more special. Both he and my boyfriend spoke a little bit and found out that he's from Iowa just like my guy. We had a wonderful dinner. Started with the seared tuna and my second course I had the braised boneless short ribs. The man started with the Mac and cheese had also had the 48 hour bacon. We bought a bottle of wine for half off which they offer on Sundays. The tuna was good but the sauce was somewhat muted compared to whatever was underneath it. The short ribs were even better the next day! Keith enjoyed his Mac and cheese and the 48 hour bacon was quite rich but delicious. Great all around... Centrally located in Old Monterey (Downtown) on the Monterey Peninsula, this restaurant was conveniently located to the hotel I was staying at. My party of three walked to the restaurant. Street parking and area parking lots are available for those who drive here. The restaurant is located in an old firehouse and uniquely decorated to reflect clouds on the ceiling. Our visit was for dinner and we arrived at 7:15pm. The dining room was dimly lit and we were immediately seated. The atmosphere was loud and social. The bar area was crowded. The creative menu was a combination of Italian, French, and California cuisines. It had something for everyone including this vegetarian. I opted to put several small plates (kale salad, sautéed mushrooms, roasted artichoke, asparagus side and brussel sprouts side) together to make my dinner. The food came out promptly. My food was delicious and plated nicely. My favorites were the asparagus and brussel sprouts. The other two had meat dishes which I heard was very good. Our server, Donice W., was patient, friendly, and attentive. There were two multi-user, single gender restrooms. The women's restroom was clean and functional but a tad outdated (not a big deal). Overall, this restaurant rates a 4.5 which rounds up to a 5. If you're in the area and looking for restaurant with a unique menu, this restaurant is worth visiting. read more

This place is AMAZING! Perfect for a date, anniversary, visit with old friends, cocktails on a Friday night. Everything is delicious here. We had the wood-fired octopus, the seared sea scallops and the seared fillet mignon and we couldn't stop talking about how good it was. This is a moan-worthy restaurant. The sea scallops were cooked to perfection. The filet mignon is the best I have had in years! I didn't mention the cocktails, but they were also perfect: we had a boulevardier and an old fashioned. Some of the finest dining in downtown Monterey. After being closed during the pandemic and new owners, this place is up and running. Well worth the wait. Went for dinner last night. Our group ordered the scallops, short ribs (entrees) and the French onion soup and Shrimp Risotto appetizers. All were excellent, well prepared and beautifully plated. Service was attentive and efficient. They are very pricey ($25 for the soup) but the quality is evident. Not sure if that's just inflation prices (EVERYTHING is expensive right now), just be prepared to drop a chunk of $$$. read more

We've been to Montrio a few times over the years and I'm a fan. It's a dependable little bistro in a town full of questionable seafood restaurants. There are a few things on the menu which are really good but nothing is disappointing. Here's my assessment of a recent visit: Mixed mushrooms with polenta: crave worthy. It's rich so even though the portion size is small, you wouldn't want more. Plus it's gluten free. Kale salad: good. It's a large portion so you could share it. I liked the lemon vinaigrette but thought there could be more of the pistachio. Based on other Yelp reviews, I should have tried the 48-hour bacon. It's a thick slice of bacon sous vided for 48 hours and served with bacon almond butter and honey. We had two fishes for the main course. The grilled salmon is served with risotto and tastes fresh straight out of the ocean. It was a large portion with a good taste but it didn't really stand out from when we make it at home. The fish of the day was cod, served with couscous. This was more flavorful and the better of the two dishes. In past visits, I've had the short ribs and can strongly recommend them. Luckily we saved room for dessert. We were fascinated with the deconstructed cheesecake (goat cheese!) but decided to get a trio of ice cream. The buttered popcorn was outstanding and we could have easily eaten it three times. As the story goes, the bartender Anthony made it at home for a specialty cocktail and everyone liked it so much they added to the menu. The bacon ice cream was unusual; I liked it but not sure I would get it again. The coconut was a sorbet - I don't think the menu mentioned that. There's a really good selection of wine and a full bar. There's even some house cocktails with fun names. For example, you can order Monkeying Around which is banana-infused Irish whiskey with a sea salt caramel. read more

A gorgeous bistro on a quiet street in Downtown Monterey. We came as a party of 7 to celebrate my father-in-law's birthday. A couple had been before but it was new to me. The menus are nice and simple and you can tell great care and attention goes into all the details here. The tables are covered in paper, so the break goes straight onto the table, and the dishes come as small, medium, and entree plates so you can mix and match and share easily. First up, our drinks were a little slow to come out but the cocktails are expertly made. I had a little taste of a few of them. There's also a solid wine list for by the glass, and a book for by the bottle. On Sundays, bottles are half-price. Our server was a pro. Friendly, efficient, answered all our questions and found answers to the ones she couldn't. I tried quite a few dishes. The mac and cheese is made with raclette, making it super smooth and creamy; though a little underwhelming flavor-wise and it could've been warmer. The crab cakes were among the best I've had, generous amount of crab, perfect coating, and the sauce with them was delicious, too. For an entree, I wish I'd gotten the duck but I wanted something lighter so I went for the rocky junior brick chicken with green beans and roast potatoes. It was nicely presented, the chicken was a little on the salty side for me. The roast potatoes were tiny, which was a little disappointing - I'm British and therefore fussy, but to me a roastie is big and golden. If you're going to do baby potatoes, boil and/or smash em up! The desserts were a highlight. We got a bread pudding for the table which was super rich and the texture was beautiful. I had a hankering for some meringue and was delighted to see a pavlova on the menu. It was individual sized, nice crunch on the outside and just right in the middle, with cream and berries and mango. Wonderful! My husband's dessert was some kind of chocolate pudding with mint ice cream, which I only had a small bite of but which he raved about. It's so rare to see desserts done this well, even at high end places I've been to, so this will bring me back. It was close to, but not quite, a 5-star experience for me. Let's make this simple: Service: Extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Everyone from the GM to the hostess was pleasant and welcoming. Ambiance: Eh....ate upstairs in the back room. It's usually used for presentations/banquets, so the decor was very bland compared to the rest of the place. It did, however, feel private. Food: We ordered two salads and the 18oz. Prime New York. The salads, while fresh, were pretty bland. The dressing desperately needed salt. The steak was quite disappointing. Ordered Medium rare, it came out sliced (I HaTE a pre sliced steak) and slightly pink. Only one piece could have been deemed medium rare. It was tough and fairly flavorless. Again.....it needed salt and had probably sat under a heat lamp. A bit disappointing for a $100 steak. The veg was perfectly cooked--loved the Yukon potatoes! We finished with the chocolate cake. Switched out the sorbet for ice cream and enjoyed its bittersweet chocolate and raspberry dust. Overall, we had a nice enough time, but it was Totally unmemorable. read more

I'll start by saying the manager ultimately took care of our complaints while we were there. That said, wife had the duck and it was over cooked. They replaced it and it was still more grey than pink. My best guess is that it didn't rest long enough. The confit was more mash potatoes than anything else and bland. We got the onion soup to share and that was good, but it came out at the same time as all the food, so we didn't even finish it. The kid had fries and they had some weird yellow seasoning on it. I thought it tasted odd but the kid managed to go through most of them. I got the short rib and it was fine. That said, I didn't eat all my food as it really wasn't anything spectacular and just wanted to leave. Again, the manager took care of our complaints, and staff was friendly. Oh - restaurant is a bit loud so be ready for that if you do go. read more

Excellent food & customer service! I did not know what to expect since we are from the East Bay, but this place executed on all that matters. We had the fried calamari which was so succulent and the sauce was so great! The white anchovies were awesome on a house made potato chip. Risotto balls were amazing with another house made sauce. Entrees that we had were truffled raviolis, scallops, Monterey black cod, pork chop with pear Zinfandel reduction with deep fried goat cheese. All were wow, and the desserts were supreme. read more

This was an incredibly disappointing meal. I had the duck which was supposed to be cooked medium rare. It was served medium. The second time, the duck was rare. Obviously not a great idea. The manager (I assume) was apologetic. She then asked if we wanted dessert. Considering what had happened, I obviously wasn't going to pay for a dessert. I also noticed that they charged $16.00 for a side of plain mashed potatoes which were supposed to be a substitute. When I mentioned the $16.00 charge for a side of mashed potatoes, the manager seemed shocked at the price. I really don't know what to say other then don't go here. read more

We had dinner at Montrio last night. I had the scallops, husband had the duck and we shared the pork belly app, smashed potato side, and the budino dessert. Food was very good. Unfortunately, our dining experience was marred by the aloof service we received. Restaurant was not busy and our server spent a lot of time chatting at the counter with the kitchen staff. He barely spoke to us, never came back even once to see if we were happy with our food. I would have liked some salt for the potatoes. Oh well! The final impression was when he dropped the check at our table without one word. No "thanks", "have a nice evening", "drop dead" ..,nothing. I'm usually surprised when I see a downgraded review rating when the food was enjoyed. Now I understand. We still tipped 20%, but would have been more if we were not treated with such indifference. read more

Food... if you could call it that...started off with bad bread that fell apart when you buttered it. The chicken came out still clucking raw in the middle. When it came back from the kitchen it was the same chicken breast and we are unsure if the raw juice remained underneath with the gnocchi and carrots. The field greens side salad, that we were told were the same as the small plate was nothing but 5 pieces of fancy lettuce with a side of olive oil. The s'mores small plate dessert shouldn't be skipped either! The specialty drink menu is crafted to perfection! The only sour note was the snarky barmen serving on the right hand side of the bar if you're facing it. He make a good drink but an attitude adjustment is needed. A little dry humor is personally welcome for me, but the line was crossed in several interactions, both personally and witnessed. My wife organized a dinner for work for 70+people and overall the food is good but they are unwilling g to cater to allergies. My wife has a nut allergy and requested no pine nuts in her burrata salad. It showed up with pine nuts and had to be re done. The next night, the same thing. The salad looked but free but we found nuts at the bottom of the salad and asked to talk to a manager. I think some of the vegan reviews are a bit old so I'll give my take in 2020. I didn't think there would be any vegan options here based on some of the reviews. Thank god I was talking to a friend of mine that mentioned that they do, because it was the best meal I've had in ages. It's fine dining at it's finest and made for the perfect anniversary date. The service was amazing, presentation was excellent and the food made my eyes roll in the back of my head. For the appetizer we had the Caulilini which was excellent. For the main course we had the Crispy Artichoke Heart and Capellini Pasta with mushrooms added. The artichoke was charred just right and had an amazing smokey flavor. The capellini was cooked to perfection and the mushrooms added a nice meaty substance to it. For desert we had apricot sorbet which was delicious and not too sweet. read more
