The Monterey Pub is a viable option on the North Shore. I've been here a few times and the food never disappoints. It's located on a residential street and has that great local pub feel you'd expect. Their quantities are on the large side and have a great assortment of options on the menu, from Irish fare to delicious burgers and fries. I usually order a burger, but have tried the Stoner dish and Sheppard's Pie and must say they're very good. If you're looking for a nice place to visit with friends and eat some good food this is the perfect spot. Great beer selection both on tap and in bottles. Highly recommend the steak nachos. read more

My partner and I visited Monterey Pub on a Monday evening right as the kitchen opened at 5pm. The server brought our drink orders over immediately and our food was on the table within 15 minutes of walking in the door. The pub filled up quickly, and by 5:45 the bar stools were full and most booths were occupied. It was amusing to see the great mix of patrons: a man reading a book at the bar, a few groups of older folks having a good time, and some young professionals. For a small neighborhood pub, I thought they had a great selection of beers on tap - Guiness, Smithwick's, Harp, Dale's Pale Ale, Bell's Two Hearted, and Bell's Oberon. I took advantage of the Monday special for one dollar off burgers and got the Mexican War Streets burger with jalapenos and guacamole, which was absolutely delicious. The patty fell apart in the soft hamburger bun, so next time I might try the burger on the more hardy pretzel bun for an extra dollar. Though the burger was extremely filing, we accepted the server's offer to see the dessert menu because she said they were all homemade and big enough to share. My partner and I shared the lemon roll topped with whipped cream and sprinkles. It seemed like a dessert more suited for a child's palate because it was so sweet and colorful, but that kind of dessert can definitely be fun to indulge in if you're in the mood! Overall, Monterey Pub is a phenomenal neighborhood pub for a good selection of beers, delicious and unique pub food, and a laid-back vibe. read more

As a Mexican War Streets resident, I have nothing but great things to say about the Monterey Pub! I think of it like my nieghborhood "Cheers Bar". In addition, even if I did not live in the neighborhood, I would still feel welcome. Highlights of the Monterey Pub: Location: You can't beat the beauty and historic preservation in the Mexican War Streets! Staff: AMAZING. Everyone is so friendly, and the wait staff has my drink memorized! And no, I am not there each day for a cocktail, but even if I was, so what! Atmosphere: Fun, lively, and a great place to meet up with friends, watch a Pittsburgh sports game, or have a solo date at the bar and meet a new friend! Food: Great food! Keep in mind, it is a pub, so you have to keep it in perspective, but for having such a diverse menu the food quality remains high among its competitors. read more

I didn't write this review immediately. My friend and I were out at dinner at a different restaurant the other night and while we were eating our appetizer, I was thinking about our dinner at Monterey and said, "Hey, remember those chicken and waffle nachos??" He paused mid chew, frowning. "Why would you make me hate the food that's currently in my mouth? It's not bad. It's really good. But I HATE it." (They were awesome good mac and cheese bites, for reference) I should have written my review immediately. We were up one weeknight and needed a late night meal. The kitchen was open until 10, so we headed out on a whim, looking for a place we hadn't been before. Monterey won due to its yelp reviews and I'm so glad it did. Normally, the mere concept of chicken and waffles kind of wigs me out and the description of them normally doesn't win my craving at all. It's been one of those dishes I've always been aware of that I simply filed under weird and never ordered, like Monte Cristo sandwiches. So I'm thanking the food gods that that night I went against my normal ordering habits and got them as my meal. And they ARE a meal, don't worry. "Belgian waffles, maple syrup, bacon, and pieces of fried chicken drizzled with jalapeno berry jam." I think it was the jalepeno berry jam that hooked me and I don't even LIKE or EVER EAT jalepenos, but the combo sounded promising and I lept. I was not wrong. It was amazing. I'm pretty sure it was fate. Outtakes of our conversation that evening re THE NACHOS: "They had this perfect thing, and THEN they put bacon on it and they didn't even have to but they did and OH MY GOD." and "It's not even that it's a waffle, it's that they take the waffle and THEN deep fry it and I can't stop eating." So. You should go. Right now. Get the waffles. Get other stuff too I guess. (Oh yeah, our beers were good, the location quaint, the atmosphere was neighborly, the staff friendly, my friend's Guinness Shredded Beef Boaty was also delicious, and the menu interesting enough to keep us coming back for some traditional Irish fare, but more importantly....) Chicken. and. Waffle. Nachos. read more

My family and I have been coming to Monterey for probably the better part of 10 years. Because I had my family there I didn't get too acquainted with the bartender, but Emily the waitress was always friendly, and always remembered us. Let's just say we went enough that she remembered what beer my wife and I drank!! The food was always excellent, the atmosphere was always welcoming, and I can't say enough about this place. Long story short, my wife and I have been checking FAITHFULLY to see when Monterey Pub would reopen. We were very happy to see that it is going to reopen and truly look forward to going back. We thought we lost this restaurant to Covid and we were truly saddened by it. Totally thrilled it will reopen soon and can't wait to get back!! read more

Great atmosphere in a neighborhood pub. Food and service was excellent. You cant go wrong visiting here.

Local pub with Irish and bar fare. The staff is perfectly grumpy but prompt, exactly as you'd want your local pub. Good Irish-style food, decent beer selection, great atmosphere. Will go again. read more

My husband's uncle suggested this little gem for beers and grub after a Pitt game and was super excited to introduce us young folk to a new place. He loves the spot so much that he asked me to write a Yelp review about it! :) We arrived around 4pm but the kitchen doesn't open until 5. No problem - we were having a lazy Saturday and were happy to have a beer or two while we waited. You can tell this is the sort of place where regulars post up at their designated bar stools each night but are still welcoming to new folks. The dark woodwork of the bar and cozy little booths plus the dark green wall color makes the bar feel warm and dark, even on a sunny day. That's exactly the feeling that a good pub should give you, makes ordering that third beer in the afternoon seem a-ok! The menu was way larger than I expected, but I decided to keep it simple with a Caesar salad and a side of pierogis. The salad was nice with a garlicky Caesar dressing, fresh greens, homemade croutons, and a sprinkling of delightfully crunchy fried onions. The only addition I would've like would be a few fresh anchovies to add more salty/briney flavor but I know that is not popular opinion! The pierogies I believe were homemade and I thoroughly enjoyed them. Perhaps most impressive was that one of my very picky dining companions finished every last bite of his Boxty dish and is still singing its praises months later. We will definitely be adding Monteray Pub to our list of go-to places when we are on the north shore for events! read more

I like side streets. I like locals. I like Monterey Pub. If you are hanging out on the North Shore, it's great to take a step back away from the river and take a walk around the Mexican War Streets. I live here, so I might be a little bit biased, but the row houses and trees make for a pretty good Saturday walk. There are a few good places to settle down and eat, drink and otherwise be merry...but I really like Monterey Pub. Monterey is a legit Irish pub. They've got Irish Beef Boxty, Salmon Boxty, Sheheard's Pie, broiled fish. If you aren't feeling adventurous, Monterey Pub knocks their hamburgers out of the park. They are good. Real good. The Monterey Patty Melt? Yes, please. Monterey Pub isn't really a place to party, thankfully. It's a neighborhood bar with good food and great people. It's a place to pull up a stool, fill up a frosty glass and get down to talking with your friends. I think we all need a few more places like this to get away, put down our phones, forget about our work and grow closer to our friends. Monterey -- sure. Let's go. read more

We ended up here after our trip to the aviary. I looked on Yelp to find a nearby place with food and we were also in the mood for a cocktail. I thought this place would fit both of our needs. We landed here right around 3. We were informed the kitchen doesnt open until 5. Noooooo :( We figured we might as well sit down and have a drink. The guy bartending was super friendly. Bobby ordered scotch on the rocks with a pepsi and i had a rum & coke. I've never had this happen, but i actually asked the bartender to add more pop to the drink. It was strong (it was appreciated but i'm a weakling..) He happily topped it off. Bobby also ordered (wait for it) a long island and i helped him sip it since we had to head out the door and find somewhere to eat. Let me just say that off of that 1 and a half drink, i was buzzed walking down the street. To be honest, even after stuffing my face with food i felt the alcohol which never happens. I can't wait to head back to try their food. read more

The Monterey Pub......I want to love it, because it's in my neighborhood...but... It's super loud (not a civilized eating environment), but maybe that's why it's called a pub ;-) It's really small, limited seating, and full of local (Mexican War Streets) drunks...not social drinkers - alcoholics, ok? The food is good - try the black bean quesadillas, spinach salad, and/or the grilled cheese - and the service is good. But it's super LOUD (bad acoustics) & hard to get a table. I usually order it to go, so I don't have to deal w/ the noise and social dynamics. read more

The Monterey is just ok. The food is typical to slightly-better-than-average pub food. They have specials every day, Tuesdays are 35 cent wing night...so it's crowded on Tuesdays. Veggie options are light, but they do exist--and the wraps here are pretty good! My complaint is that the draft list is always the same five beers, and it's on the pricy side for the area. You can find better selection at Park House on the other side of the 'hood, or Modern Cafe on the OTHER other side of the 'hood. It's in a cute old house, if you're into that, but it's dark, and usually very loud. We end up coming here every few weeks because the husband loves the wings, and they are cheap on Tuesdays...but other than that, I wouldn't give it any special recommendation. read more

On a Thursday night it was still bustling and almost filled to the brim with customers. It was located in a quiet residential area which was rather nice since we got to get away from all the city life. I was expecting some average wrap, sandwich, burger type of meal but actually was pretty impressed by their selection. I got the Emily's Veggie Ciabatta and it was delicious! I particularly loved the goat cheese that was smothered on. The sandwich was completely filled half of it consisted of the sandwich and the other half was consumed by a mountain of fries, fries which I took home and later devoured. It was a pretty good experience, the only thing deterring me from going back would be the distance. I was surprised by the amount of businesses in North Side - it's reinventing itself and it's definitely a place worth visiting. read more

This is our go-to neighborhood restaurant, especially when I don't feel like cooking or my husband is in a burger mood, which can be weekly. The Monterey Pub is filled with regulars, neighbors who catch up on what's going on. That makes it a noisy place for dinner. They do an outstanding job on their hamburgers. The fries are big, steak fries. They also do a good job on their wraps for smaller appetites. They do a good job on their daily specials, which tend to be fancier than you'd expect from a pub. The front of the pub has the long bar on one side for those stopping in for a drink or nibble, and booths on the opposite side. The back has a few tables for slightly larger groups. Get there early or be prepared to wait to sit down. read more

my best friend's childhood home is kitty-corner from this gem but he's never visited, so we made a point of dropping by last weekend during our pgh quickie. during the day, it blends in with the quiet homes on monterey, but at night, the lights inside provide candlelight to passersby. we walked in, and i was immediately surprised. the space is bigger than you'd think. expansive bar on one side (where all the regulars sit, eyes fixated on the nhl network on plasma screens..obviously), booths lining the wall on the other, and scattered tables for larger parties in the back. the bestie ordered a smithwick's while i opted for a bombay and tonic, and we soon discovered that this totally *is* the neighborhood spot. in fact, people were approaching us and introducing themselves by saying, "oh hi, i'm susan from ____ street". it was like a nighttime block party indoors with gracious heating and a fancy jukebox. lee was our server and while she was great, it appeared that she was the only server that night. getting her attention was difficult, from asking for more water to paying our tab. can't wait to try their food next time. finally, another reason why i should just pack up and move to pittsburgh:: my (generously poured) bombay sapph and tonic was $5.75........just as the bestie's smithwick's was. butter. read more

Super cute spot! My roommates and I came here for burgers & martinis, both of which were $1 off on Monday nights. Four of us in a booth was a tight squeeze, but it worked just fine. The music was decent, the food likewise, service was swift & friendly, and overall, super cute. The neighborhood is adorable too. The highlight of the meal was definitely the pulled pork nachos, and when the burger I was splitting with my roommate arrived, it was split in half for no cost, and we each had our own little pile of french fries - a nice touch. Unfortunately the next day I felt super ill, but that was probably the result of gorging on pork & beef as a mostly-vegetarian than anything to do with Monterey Pub itself... read more

In all my times visiting the Monterey Pub I have never been disappointed by anything I've been brought. The food is always excellent, the drinks are reasonably priced and the service is top notch. It's always packed and for good reason, but you'll never wait more than a few minutes for a table. I don't know what's happening in the kitchen, but I suspect some style of witchcraft. Whatever is happening, it produces results. The Shepard's Pie is excellent, as is the Boxty. The fish and chips are top notch, and the wings are spectacular. Come for the drinks. Come for the friendly atmosphere. For the excellent service and the incredible desserts. The amazing food and wonderful location. Stay, because you just can't help yourself. read more

Some of my favorite wings and french fries in the city! We've never had a bad experience there...

I was initially confused by finding this place b/c it just blends right in with the houses around it. But lucky for me, I saw the smokers lingering outside and the faint shimmer of a neon sign. Parking was very convenient as there was plenty of street parking. The bar is fairly small inside, but when I went it wasn't too crowded. Let's just say it was comfortably crowded. Very eclectic group of people - there were some hipsters, townies, and yuppies. I can't comment on the food b/c I only came here for drinks. read more

Best neighborhood pub in the city! The bartender is attentive and the waitress is awesome. Good beer selection, but then I'm a beer snob, I'd rather drink water than Coors light etc. The food is good too., I'm usually there on Fridays after work, there has been no noise issue at all. I wouldn't want to go anywhere else to unwind on a Friday afternoon. read more

A friend and I had tried for over a year to coordinate a dinner here and we finally made it. To our delight this place was quite warm, inviting and the food was delicious! It's in a quaint part of the Mexican War Streets tucked away in a row house like a hidden gem. Street parking isn't so bad as you get to see the neighborhood on your way. The inside is warm and comfortable with quaint wooden booths for 2 and a warm bar. People chatting, singing and enjoying themselves. It's very clean and smells like a warm meal. The food is seriously delicious. The fried pickles, the beef stew served in a sterling silver bowl, the steak and fresh creamy slaw and sweet potatoes. The menu is big and full of something for everyone. My friend had chicken and potato's and it also look wonderful. My drink wasn't perfect but I enjoyed it. The overall bill was so reasonable I was legitimately surprised. I took some carrot cake home and it was so moist and perfectly made. The coleslaw was made fresh and the soup was fresh. I think I may have found a new spot to frequent! read more

Let me take you on a short trip. This trip starts on Monterey Street in the Northside right in the heart of the Mexican War Streets. On your left and on your right there are row houses lightly hugging one another, one by one and then as if it wasn't meant to be found like a treasure beneath the murky depths of the sea, you find yourself staring at Monterey Pub. You go inside, unsure of what awaits you. Inside you find everything exactly how you imagined it, a dimly lit bar with people all around creating the warmth that happened to draw you in from the chilly streets now behind you. You sit, you find that you are thirsty and fortunately for you there is a hearty selection of brews to choose from all awaiting to drench your parched mouth as it waits patiently. Now that you have settled in you notice a slight grumbling beginning to erupt inside you. It's dinner time and you realize you have not yet eaten. Luckily for you there is a menu of an enormous selection of foods to choose from. Around you, you notice quite a bit of other weary travelers eating burgers which you then realize is occurring because of Monterrey Pub's signature specialty in the burger arena. You go for it. The next thing you know you are pillaging a plate of food and a beer of your choosing. Life is good, then you realize it wasn't life at all that acquired that description, it was the Monterey Pub all along. Great Grub Great Brew Great Price Great Bar read more

Cool city pub with slightly Irish bent. The place is cozy and has a great vibe, and the servers are really good. The beer selection is mostly the usual Irish suspects of which I'm not a fan (Guiness is not vegan in any case). I had a double IPA, which proved to be a bit hoppy for me, but was well executed, and Chimy blue which was excellent. I should really give this place more stars, however the veggie black bean burger could not have been more bland - I had to add some veges from gf's meal to make it passably palatable. There's a vege wrap too, which might have been better, but this is not really a vegan friendly place, although it feels like it could easily do a lot better. Still, would go back, and hope for better. read more

I used to live on the N Side and the Monterey Pub was my favorite dining spot/watering hole. I spent so much time there I got to know everyone. I go back whenever I'm in the neighborhood. This place gets crowded, but I love it anyway. There are cozy booths in the front and a dining room in the back. I hope they never change the decor, its so homey and warm. the food is good, however I hear they got a new chef and the last time I dined there the food was okay, but not as good as it used to be. I had baked fish and it tasted like it had been microwaved from frozen. Regardless, I will still be back and I highly recommend this neighborhood gem. read more

Love, love, love everything about the pub...I might be biased because every time I don't feel like cooking (which happens a lot), we head down the street to our favorite little pub. It's the perfect little spot for some really great food. During my last visit, I introduced some friends from work, it was an amazing display of everything that's not good for you. I had enjoyed the Monterey Pub for years - many years - food, drink, - well, that is before the new owners bought it and opened recently. I was so disappointed - the food was less than mediocre(compared to the great soups and fresh food from previous owners) - the beers limited and not great - but, the service was terrible. The bartender - no words - just not a place I will make an effort to return to. Kinda sad for the neighbourhood..... read more

An Irish pub at its finest. Brought here for a first time for dinner. Unbelievable. Had the Guinness beefy, cheesy, potato pancake masterpiece along with a side of more potato pancakes. Monterey Pub is in pole position for being my favorite pub in Pittsburgh. Absolutely love it and it's one my musts for pilgrimages to Pittsburgh. Great drinks and awesome selection of beers and a rather sophisticated menu for a Pittsburgh bar. The Monterey Pub is one of the few pubs in Pittsburgh that really deserves the name. It's a friendly neighborhood place that places as much importance on good food and conversation as on drinking. The menu here is fantastic, with a tendency towards Irish food with a slight twist. The Guinness pot roast is always good, and I'm partial to the ploughman's lunch (although the ploughman's is not the real thing -- it's missing the Branston Pickle!). The beer selection isn't as great, tending towards macro brews. Finally, the atmosphere is fantastic -- a great place to have dinner with some friends, in the middle of the beautiful woodwork and nice decorations. This isn't the place to go watch a game, though -- there are a couple TVs mounted above the bar, but it's really more of a place for dinner and chatting than Steelers-ogling. read more

A small legit Irish bar, with wood paneling throughout the interior makes for an intimate neighborhood feel. Monterey pub is a great place to spend a late weekend afternoon or wolf down comfort food with friends. A perfect place to stop by after a visit to the museums in the North End, as well. The pints are well-poured and the drinks are good and cheap. The food is super-hearty. All of the beef seems to be marinated in Guinness (which is excellent). Try the boxty's if you're feeling adventurous. This may be obvious, but if you're looking for the pub, it's on Monterey street (look for the YMCA at the end). read more

I went here before the Steelers game the other night and had a great experience. Monterey was recommended by a friend of mine, because their wings were "to die for!" This place has a really cool Irish pub atmosphere to it that you don't get most places. They hit the nail on the head. We ordered the Buffalo + Garlic Parm (mixed sauce wings). They were phenomenal and the ranch was above average. We also ordered a burger, which was cooked to my liking. My girlfriend ordered the Guinness beef wrap, which she didn't really care for (because of the sauce). The wrap seemed really well made, but I think she just doesn't care for the taste of "Irish food." Good beer selection on tap, and I would definitely go back for the wings! read more
