I've been in the St. Louis area for a little over a year now and I've been to this winery more than the others and it is a great time every time I go, so I figured I should probably give them a stellar review. Now you're probably wondering well if it's so great every time, why not 5 stars... well the actual wine has to account for at least a star and moving from wine country (the real wine country - NAPA) to St. Louis was quite the wine shock. I can't do the sweet wines anymore and well, we are in the Midwest so fruity and sweet is about all you get. So the wine is far from my favorite, however I've found one or two "dry" wines as they call it that I can stand to enjoy while I'm there. They have a complimentary tasting of 5 wines, but if you ask nicely they'll give you a couple extra pours, as they want you to find something to buy ;) They have a wide selection of cold and hot food. Sandwiches and pizzas, cheese and crackers, fruit, etc... They also have sodas, water and beer for the none wine drinkers who still want to partake in the winery scene and enjoy the day. The wine is bought by the bottle and the majority are under $20, so it's reasonable, especially if you're sharing. The atmosphere is amazing. Mainly a large outdoor, multi-leveled patio space that has a breathtaking overlook. You can't beat it! I've been in the fall when it's a little cooler, so you just have to bundle up a bit more. And I've been when it's 100 degrees... and when that happens you want to make sure you find a shaded spot (which there is more than you'd think) and they have big fans that they will gladly point in your direction. They also have a great live music scene, all inclusive with a dance floor that is ALWAYS a good time, with the right people that is! All is all, if you like sweet wine, live music, pizza and patios... this will be your jam, so get your butt to Montelle ASAP! Regardless if you like wine at all, if you like a good time and want a fun space with friends to hang out, this place is calling your name! read more

Went this past weekend with a large group. Due to the nice weather, Montelle Winery was to capacity when we arrived. Which was disappointing, but we were able to wait and enter the winery. Being from Chicago, I was not used to laxity of the COVID-19 rules. None of the workers had masks on (even the servers). No hand sanitizer in place and customers were able to walk around without masks. The tables had signs to keep them "socially distant" distances away, but many of them were moved and combined to accommodate a larger party. Would love to visit one day due to the amazing views, however probably after the pandemic! read more

I will never return here on a weekend if I have any say in the decision. They had just stopped doing tastings when we got there so they said. They sent us outside to get wine but after my husband waited in line outside they sent him back in for wine by the glass. Then I went in to order food. The line was so long but they never bothered to open their other register despite having a lady standing there unboxing crackers. They have a very limited menu at this time and nothing really beyond pizza and cheese. After I finally ordered I was given a pager. It went off but only 1 item was ready. They didn't really seem to be in a hurry to fill orders. Oh if you have to go to the bathroom be ready wait in another long line without social distancing. I never had to go thankfully. Having said all that you can't beat their views. They did have music in Saturday afternoon and night. read more

We are so lucky to have such a nice wine country in Missouri. I do not live far from this winery, which makes it extra nice. Although there are several wineries to choose from in the area, this is one of my favorites. My brought my wife and daughter and we enjoyed three bottles of wine, lunch and the pretzel platter. It was all delish! You just can not go wrong here. The views are spectacular! Very nice to sit and watch the scenery while your day drinking! Use to be #1 before Hoffman purchased. A lot of employee turnover. Upper management does not care about the long term employees who made this winery #1. Sales are extremely down because Hoffmann wines are not being distributed locally as much anymore. When a monopoly company takes over, small town communities will stick will small town stores...not Hoffmann businesses who own the town. Why support a monopoly winery, when other wineries appreciate their hard working employees and don't allow upper management to run Hitler establishments when we the employees do the hard work. Support the other local wineries and let's grow without supporting monopolies. read more

Since thee Hoffman family took over ownership this winery has gone vastly down hill. Bottle prices sky rocketed, they cut down all the trees. I went on a summer day with a higher temperature and they refused to turn on the fan because "it is pretty old and we don't want to waste this unless it's for the band". Im sorry, I just paid $20 for a bottle of wine that costs $6 at Schnucks. Avoid this place at all cost. I would give them 0 stars if I could. read more

A little delayed on this review. We came here with friends towards the end of summer. We wanted to explore a little and see what they were talking about. They frequent this winery since it's fairly close to their house. Driving up to the front was a little weary. You drive up a hill and looks like you're in the middle of nowhere. Once you get up there the building is pretty big. I was excited as we walked up. Once you walk in, it's very inviting. There's welcome signs, shopping, and the tasting bar. We browsed the items before getting a tasting. We got to sample a few wines and decided on what we were going to get before going outside. The patio area is gorgeous. The views are amazing and there's plenty of seating. We walked around to the other side where there was more seating and the cutest little fountain. Gorgeous space and the wine was great. Visited in late April on a sunny afternoon- 80°. Since they have removed all tree shading on the decks we had to sit in the hot sun even though tables are for umbrellas. Asked about umbrellas and they said they broke last summer and they don't have any. It was very uncomfortable sitting out there and for the new prices I thought they should've been better prepared for a spring afternoon. What used to be my favorite place in Augusta was a sad disappointment. read more

Montelle Winery is also good. The bottles of wines were pricey. The server was pleasant and knowledgeable. I was more impressed by the landscaping and the view than I was with the wine. The entrance in the main building is not warm or inviting. It's feel like a cafeteria. However, the view is absolutely breath taking. It's worth going for the view alone. Our group was absolutely shocked at what the new owner/corporation has done to this winery. The owner's "singsong is just wait until we're done renovating, you'll like it much better". Well, we're sure not impressed with what has been done so far. At best removal of the beautiful trees sickened us when we saw it. Missouri is known for its trees and this outfit comes in and deforested most of the entire deck area leaving not only no shade but the ambience the trees provided is now destroyed, completely gone. Again we were absolutely shocked when we saw it. Since new owner/corporation did this early spring think of the wildlife that was affected, the birds, their nests and babies, the squirrels, their habitat, etc. etc. etc. Did they not care about that or even consider it. Shameful! We despise the repainting of the building. Why on earth was that done! Owners call it a "wine color". We call it "putrid yellow". ALSO watch out for wind-surfing umbrellas. There is NO wind break now so not only are you nearly blown away on the deck along with your food and cups BUT because of the high wind umbrellas come flying out of their holders from the deck below with a force to be reckoned with. One landed between our table and another group of patrons, scary and it's a real injury just waiting to happen. Lawsuit anyone??? The price for wine tasting has gone up as well, the highest in the area. Our food was good, no complaints there as well as the staff. Also I have a real problem with reviews that are 5-star on the google reviews with NO comments provided. Sure seems suspicious to us. Are they real? We have been coming to montelle for 20+ years. This was our first time here since the Hoffmann buyout. We knew the trees were cut down. The view has always been gorgeous. So now you can see a few more miles but it's hot and sunny so It's not particularly pleasant. Worst of all, our favorite wine is the Norton Reserve. It's now $60 bottle. Same wine, same location, new owners, more expensive and less inviting as a venue to stay a few hours. read more

I was shocked when we arrived at Montelle Winery today for relaxing afternoon of lunch, wine and music. They have completely destroyed the ambiance by virtually clear cutting the tall beautiful oak trees that surrounded and shaded the patios and decks overlooking the beautiful green valley below. Ignore ALL of the pictures in the gallery that include trees or shade. There are very few of the trees left and absolutely no shade at all. We have been going to Montelle Winery for literally decades but today was our last time. (NOTE: This place is going to be an absolute nightmare on a hot sunny day this summer. Cool winery, was the first stop on the Augusta Wine Tail. A good range of dry to sweet wines. My favorite was the Himmelswein. The tasting itself was a little less involved than most, it was really quick and it was pretty busy the views were nice and the outdoor seating really lovely. There is also a restaurant and the food smelled great! read more

Went with a group of friends that came to visit from Oregon, California, Utah , chicago .. for drinks and food - made a reservation for it a month before. We got kicked out before even coming in , because we came on motorcycles. He screamed at us for being bullies . Just to clarify we are a groups of mostly couples - who like to ride on weekends. We have been all over USA , including Napa valley - known for its beautiful wineries and got the royal treatment. It was such a disappointment to Get yelled out by an obviously drunk owner - he didn't even care we had a reservation. His loss - I know I will never step into that horrible place . read more

While I usually enjoy Montelle Winery, I have to say that, after being here today, it doesnt look like management is taking COVID-19 guidelines very seriously. None of the staff were masked, and only about 1/3 of the clientele was. The patio was near capacity, with hardly any social distancing. There was a sign at the cash register explaining the rules (that everyone inside must wear a mask and that the staff had the right to limit seating outdoors) but it looks like none of that was followed. Please step up and require basic safety requirements of your staff and customers. Im sure they will still come. read more

Montelle has been my go-to winery since I was old enough to go to them, and I knew variety is the spice of life and everything, but not always in the case of Augusta wineries... when you find one, it's probably wise to keep going back. People might say I "get around" when it comes to wine, but I feel pretty good about my reputation... and I seriously don't know any better way to spend a gorgeous Sunday than drinking some at Montelle. The parking lot is pretty big, but half of it is at a slant which makes walking when you're trying to leave pretty interesting. When you make your way inside, you walk into a giant atrium-looking building where there is wine aplenty and also the faint smell of pizza which you know you'll end up ordering later. They'll let you taste-test anything you want so you can pick a wine that works for you, but I always get the Seyval Blanc. It's a semi-dry (more dry than semi) white and it's really the only wine I can drink from the Show Me State because it's not overwhelmingly sweet. Food choices are just so-so, but you can get sandwiches, meats and cheeses, Billy Goat chips as well as the aforementioned pizza. I can't believe I'm about to admit this, but I do something every time I'm at Montelle I end up cringing about the next day... I eat beef sticks. Yiiiiiikes. Yeah, I unwrap a processed stick of beef and naw on it like I was raised in a barn. I can't help it! When you're hungry you're hungry I guess... The atmosphere is damn near perfect, and you can see miles of beautiful scenery. So much green! It's incredible we have a view like that so close to St. Louis. They also have live music all the time, and last weekend there was a Jamaican drummer named Lenny who was equipped with a tambourine as well as this hideous hat that had fake dreadlocks hanging down from it... just priceless. For a brief moment I was a wine drinking, beef stick eating, Jamaican man with dreadlocks. If that's not attractive, I don't know what is! I'll keep those pictures to myself. I came out to Montelle for the first time this past weekend and had a great time! It's the perfect day trip destination for a quick getaway from St. Louis. First tidbit of info, if you have a big group be warned. This place gets packed! It was only me and one other so we didn't have a trouble securing a spot but that could be a problem. The view at Montelle is beautiful and makes the trip worth it over some other wineries in the area. They also have a substantial selection of food in the Klondike Cafe. I had an amazing pizza that was topped with asparagus, prosciutto, and tomato. Pretty darn good for somewhere that ins't necessarily a "food place." Luckily we had a spot far away from the DJ otherwise conversation may have been a little difficult. So we spontaneously decided to take a winery trip one Saturday afternoon, and drove out to Augusta. We had been to the other wineries out there before so decided to try Montelle for the first time. It is way down a gravel road and then up a really big hill, so once you get out there, the view is spectacular! They had a live band playing music, and since it was a beautiful day, everyone was sitting outside overlooking the scenery from atop the hill. We got a bottle of wine and a pizza for about $30, and that looked to be the popular combo among the patrons that day. They did shut down part of the outside deck at around 5pm for dinner guests that were coming. If you are looking for a laid back winery that has great views and reasonably prices food and drink, then visit Montelle and you wont be disappointed! read more

Really, just go for the atmosphere and the wine. Do not expect a gourmet meal here. Or even a bread co esque meal. But that is OK. I don't mind the lack of dining when it comes to the stunning view. But if you have a significant other *ahem* who does not drink, and requires food, you might want to consider bringing a friend instead. (I went with a coworker toward the end of autumn, and the view was still amazing!) It was kinda cold though, so bring some layers if you intend to sit outside. Truly amazingly beautiful. If you want a more restaurant-like experience, there are other wineries in the area that offer that type of environment, but with not quite as stunning of a view. We took our Daughter to Montelle Winery on Saturday, May 14th for her 25th birthday and she was really looking forward to enjoy the beautiful view, wine, and to celebrate. One was we were stunned all the BEAUTIFUL TREES were CUT down, secondly NO UMBRELLAS were even assembled or offered, and thirdly NO FANS!!! How can anyone enjoy this kind of atmosphere? I had one glass of wine which I should have not wasted my money on because as soon as we got home after a long drive, I literally go overheated I ended up sick. I will NEVER go to this winery again. I leave feedback if a restaurant is either exceptional or horrible. In this case I'm sorry to report that this place was awful. We gave it a try as we were supposed to meet friends out in MO wine country and they didn't show. We knew of an acquaintance that works here so we thought we would try it out. We went on a Saturday around 2 p.m. And the patio overlooks a valley with incredible views. However, there was an extremely loud band playing in the main area : I'd describe the music as cover songs such as : "Neil Diamond - Sweet Caroline" and "Low Rider" by War. The only place to sit was in the back patio NOT overlooking the picturesque landscape. The menu consists of sandwiches and pizzas from a Cafe type of arrangement. Montelle has a selection of meats and cheeses in their refrigerator section. I ordered hummus plate and Brie . (8.50 and 10.50 respectively ) I ordered these two things after asking if the Caesar salad had an anchovy based dressing to which three separate employees could not answer which led me to the conclusion that I should not order the salad as I don't eat a fake Caesar ever. The hummus was quite frankly disgusting. I thought it was from one of those large bulk orders you get from a food service corp. The Brie was served in a plastic bowl all melted with an oil on top with a drizzle of so called house made strawberry sauce. First off, Brie should be served in a wheel or in pie slices at least , with the Brie being warmed in an oven. I was so ticked we had paid 20.00 dollars for these two things, I asked for the manager. He said the hummus was HOUSE MADE which makes that situation even worse, because if you can't make a good hummus, what can you make? He explained that he didn't know why the Brie always gets that oil on top even though they decrease their heat time in the MICROWAVE. *gasp* . They asked me for a receipt before refunding me which is absurd, I had to go back to our table, retrieve the receipt , and come back. The manager refunded the cost of the two appetizers. We also ordered a cheese pizza, my husband ordered a Klondike sandwich , and the little one ordered a grilled cheese sandwich. Our total bill was around 50 dollars. The Klondike tasted like cardboard / nothing special there either but I was more upset by the appetizers. I tried 5 wines in the packed tasting bar. All were terrible, with the exception of the Cynthiana port which was passable and I bought it to drink something for around 20.00. My hubs had a beer. If you have to go here to try it, for the views, my suggestion is buy beer in a bottle, or get the port. Eat from the refrigerator section and purchase crackers. Come early to get a table. Prepare to be around drunk folks with gaudy jewelry. Or, go a little further to the Silly Goose, a small quaint restaurant in downtown Augusta that is very good. Now that Sugar Creek up the road charges for tastings, Montelle and Augusta, which have the same ownership, are my favorite fruity-wine producing wineries on the Katy Trail. The wine prices are low, the tasting counter is huge, there is a deli, and view is from the large patio is incredible. My friend and I split a cheese pizza and waited a long time. When it was finally ready, the cook apologized for the wait and explained that something happened to the pizza, so they had to make a new one. I appreciated that apology (though I do wish I could have gotten a free pretzel while I waited). The pizza was good, but next time I will ask them to hold the feta, as I'm not a fan. I visited Montelle for the first time last week and absolutely loved it! Following a hike at Klondike Park, a friend and I decided to check out one of the wineries in Augusta. Montelle was the closest and I had heard great things both by word of mouth and via Yelp reviews so we headed there. It was a beautiful sunny weekday afternoon and sitting out on their deck there, it was truly paradise! Upon arriving the staff that provides free tasting was very friendly and accommodating. They gave the two of us a little background about Montelle and where their grapes are grown, the kinds of wine they provide, and what their most popular wines are. The girl that helped us provided us with some samples based on our flavor preferences and then included her favorite which was really nice! (You get 5-6 tastes for free which I thought was very generous.) I am a sweet wine kind of gal and ended up choosing a glass of their Stone House White wine. It was light and refreshing without being too sweet and the perfect way to end an afternoon of hiking with a great friend! When we entered one of the staff members told us that "once you visit Montelle you won't want to go anywhere else". After this lovely visit with great customer service, deliciously crafted wine, and an absolutely amazing view, I'd have to agree. I will be headed back to enjoy some patio time at Montelle Winery in the near future! read more

Well, we were instructed to go to another -- purportedly "the best" -- winery, but they had closed up for the day. And so we moseyed over to Montelle instead. The interior felt a bit like a shabby country store. But any disappointment with the look dissipated when we stepped up to the counter and were greeted by a friendly gal who gave us a wine list and proceeded to pour and walk us straight through the 30 or so on offer. Unfortunately, we were in a rush to get to a reception, so we only stayed to sample a small number. I'm no wine aficionado. So any judgment is to be taken with a grain of salt. But I felt there seemed to be less sophistication among the varietals than what you might find on the west coast. That said, there were several that would have made perfectly enjoyable "patio wines" for easy sipping. Of the two bottles we left with, one was tapped into at an ungodly hour post-wedding-reception, and so unfortunately not savored and remembered; the other was given as an oops-I-forgot-to-bring-a-gift-for-the-hostess item. Some friends from high school and I decided to get together and selected this winery for our little reunion. It's a bit of a drive from the metro STL area but a beautiful one. There are quite a few wineries out this way. I never knew there were so many wineries in this part of MO. We went on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. There was a musical duo that played a variety of good music and we all enjoyed listening to them. Some of us even danced! I've been to many wineries including Napa and Sedona so I'm a bit picky. Inconsiderate and intolerant of people with severe food allergies. My sister brought her own dairy free cheese and GF crackers, my brother in law bought food from the winery and a bottle of wine. This was my first trip to the wineries of Augusta. It had a very factory feel to it. We have a winery in my town and they are very friendly. We did not get to select the wine off of the list that we wanted to sample. We only sampled two, which was fine we found one that we liked. We were told to get it ourselves out of the cooler and proceed to the checkout. I felt like I was in a grocery store. The setting was nice, they had live music. We struggled to find a table. How wonderful this place is! Came hungry for their Symphony & Sunset event and left completely satisfied. It's a 45 minute drive outside of St. Louis City, but the views and service are worth this journey. When we walked in, we took advantage of their super cheap ($5/$8) wine flight. Then, we enjoyed the sounds of a local trumpet band while sipping on our wine and enjoying the views on the patio. Dinner was impeccable. Our steak was perfectly cooked and the dessert was AH-MAZING. We've been out a number of times but they have definitely reached a tipping point. Enough business comes through that they stopped providing free tastings. While the tastings themselves are good pours and probably worth $5 or whatever fee, the bottles are extremely pricey. Now I'm not a fan of sweet missouri wine, but the nortons and a few others are fun and interesting. I think others have similar preferences because bottles from montelle or missouri wine country max out around $15-20 at total wine or randalls. The winery charges about 3 times what they're all worth... after driving 60+ minutes to the middle of nowhere. Only a complaint because many drivers have had a few too many for the road home. Beautiful views, good food, and a good patio bring people. With free tastings and cheaper bottles of wine, it would be a great experience. Enough people will go regardless so they don't care. Without, I'm sure you or your friends could recreate the experience in a nice back yard with better wine. Actually the same wine for 1/3 the price and no driving. read more
