I love this pet shop!! It is nestled and hidden on the Mesa in the Vons and McDonald's plaza but on the other, OTHER side! They have pet food, products, pet care and aquarium supplies. And you can schedule arrangements to order a weekly supply from them. They supply dog and cat food, feeders like giant mealworms, crickets, blooded worms, large and small feeder fish, live adult feeder/fuzzy hopper/pinky mouse. I was assisted by Sebastian and I recommend him assisting you as he has great customer service, loves his role at the shop and has a lot of knowledge on the types of dog and cat food and feeders! Great little pet shop for basic pet needs. If you own a cat, dog, fish, or small household rodent they will have the food, toys, treats, and other basic necessities for them. When I had my puppy I would come here for their discount dog toys and they were always so unique and well priced. I've also come here for themed event supplies such as a fish net and cat toys and everything seemed to be reasonably priced. They do have a cat that wanders throughout the store and is very sweet, but fair warning in case you are deathly allergic. They also do kitten adoptions every so often which you are able to see through the front window of the store before entering. The parking situation isn't terrible but it does share a lot with the main shopping strip that includes Vons, Starbucks, Mesa Cafe, Rite Aid, and so on. I've never had trouble finding a spot but waiting for others to pull out on the one way roads is a little time consuming. The staff have never been insanely friendly but they also haven't been mean. Average experiences with decently quality products at what I would think are average prices for Santa Barbara. read more

A little pricey but I prefer supporting local business and have always had great customer service. The benefit of shopping local...they remember my dogs name and ask about her, even when she's not shopping with me. Some people only shop where they can get the lowest prices - and I totally understand that - but I know that Montecito Pet Shop only carries high quality merchandise and the more personalized staff interactions, even for the quick, once a Month visits, makes it a good value for me. Today, I visited the pet shop to inquire about the kittens available for adoption, as I had seen their listings online. The staff member present at 3 PM on September 16 was exceedingly unprofessional, treating me condescendingly like I was some college student trying to adopt a kitten despite me being in my mid-30s. When she inquired whether I intended to have an indoor or indoor/outdoor cat, I responded with indoor/outdoor. Apparently these cats are only allowed to be adopted if they are kept indoors.. Somehow in her mind my response meant I was not interested in adopting? Because when I requested to see a kitten, she denied my request, citing legal issues related to me not being in the process of adoption. What legal issues? This reasoning was perplexing, especially considering the kittens' lack of human interaction while confined. I find it difficult to recommend this establishment, as the employees demeanor was patronizing and dismissive and down right rude. I would suggest getting more friendly, and helpful employees if you actually care about the animals you are trying to get adopted. read more

I always go to Montecito pet shop to purchase my Dogo's food. They carry high end dog food brands like Acana, Orijen, Stella and Chewy, etc. and their price is amazingly competitive. I love this pet store! First of all it's a locally owned store and it's always better to shop local vs corporate.. they carry only high quality product so your pet is sure to be getting yummy and healthy food! They also have a very popular grooming line with the anti itch shampoo being most popular for the Santa Barbara area specifically (as it was created intentionally to cater for local dogs) very cool! I am incredibly impressed with the customer service here I was helped by Jason today and he was very knowledgeable about everything, attentive, helpful, and overall genuinely cared about making sure I left with the best products/food for my dog and I appreciate this very much. I love to be taken care of with the sincerity he had. Thank you Jason! I was excited to see this shop on my way out of Vons because I needed some cat food and didn't want to drive all the way to my normal place across town. I couldn't find what I was looking for so I asked the woman behind the counter if they had a specific brand of cat food and she said, "Im pretty sure that's grocery store stuff, you can try Vons" and it felt very condescending. (The stuff I get is on the higher end price wise and has been recommended by my vet, it's not like I was asking for bottom of the barrel product) Rather than low key cat mom shaming me, she could have made some suggestions for better food that they sell there and I might have considered switching but I quickly left feeling really embarrassed. Not a great experience for me and left a bad taste in my mouth. read more

It's odd to see that someone adopted an unhealthy pet from this pet store and received poor treatment from staff. I'm actually disappointed, because the staff seems to care about the pets in their care. I adopted my kitty here last month and he is in excellent health. Also, my roommate adopted her bunny and it's in good health as well. I often go in and play with the new pups and see the new rescues and they all seem in good health and spirits so I don't know what to say. I'm sorry someone had a really bad experience and hope to not hear of more. I'm big on animal rights and believe that more should adopt their pets instead of buying little ones from mills. I like the fact that this pet shop switched from using mills; it's more respectable. I like this place and will continue to buy my kitty's food and toys from here, but if I see any animals being mistreated or looking neglected, I will say something. A behaviorist's nightmare, decidedly not dog-friendly. While it's a well-stocked store with some great products, this is not a safe place to take your dog. I usually expect a pet store to be ready to fit dogs with collars, harnesses, and even sweaters, so yesterday I made the mistake of entering the store with my 12 lb dog on a 4' leash. Upon entering Montecito Pet Shop, we were immediately rushed by a medium-sized, powerfully-built dog that proceeded to follow us around the store, looming over my dog and remaining in physical contact with him despite my efforts to separate them. While my dog is EXTREMELY forgiving, this was still incredibly rude behavior. The person at the counter was talking to other customers and completely ignored the dog harassing mine. I had assumed this dog belonged to the other customers, but when I tripped over it the employee called for it. The dog returned almost immediately and resumed shoving my dog and running into my legs. Behind the counter there was a VERY large dog that began growling as soon as we entered the store. As I approached the counter, both dogs rushed over and corned mine against the counter. The smaller of the two then jumped on my dog, pinning him to the floor in its mouth. I was able to pull him up and out of danger by his harness and leash. The employee then called the dogs back behind the counter with a quick "Sorry." I paid for my purchase and left immediately to check my dog for puncture wounds. My little guy is ok, but that situation was dangerous and unforgivable. At best the shop dogs were rude and out of control, at worst they could have killed my dog in a heartbeat. My dog is very resilient, but other dogs I work with would have been traumatized, and the situation could have ended very badly. I will never shop there again, and I would caution other customers to avoid putting their dogs in harm's way by bringing them into the store. read more

Although their prices are good, you have to ask for your receipt. I have been overcharged (double scanned) several times. When I brought it to their attention they were extremely defensive, had to go in and check their inventory and acted like I was trying to pull something over on them... for a $1.85 can of pet food. That pet store smelled like leftover alcohol. Probably the owner, since I overheard an employee complaining about her drinking. It could be the employees too. Don't really know, definitely don't care. If you need something in a pinch, I guess you could go there. You could also go to any one of the other dozen pet shops in Santa Barbara and get a better deal and no drunk smell. The place is kind of expensive and the service doesn't really make up for it. "Montecito" in the name makes the place sound classy. It may have been one time, I don't know. It's definitely not classy now. Edit: went back today, Aug.6, hoping that it was a fluke chance that the store was smelled like Bevmo. Well, nope. I think it's the employees. Smelled like stale beer and the employees seemed to be in a bad mood like they're hungover. Outside of that, the store is kind of expensive. The stale beer breath smell was not worth the extra price. As it is, I had to lower my rating. Probably in a couple of months I'll go back and give it another chance. I like shopping at smaller stores, but this place makes me want to go to petco. I have only used this store for purchasing pet supplies, not adoption services. I have always been happy with the service!! The staff is friendly & knowledgable and has given me good recommendations for cat supplies. They even let me bring back a cone that was purchased for my cat - it just wouldn't stay on his head and they were happy to take it back. I also find it sweet that there are a variety of animals that "work" in the store. A giant dog and a rooster that actually seem to be good buddies! I love this store! read more

The older woman who works here is extremely rude, and I would say borderline racist. My brother tried to adopt a kitten here and she told him he couldn't because he is a student. That I can understand since its their store policy. But then he asked if there was any other way he could adopt the kitten and she said it was fine if he had a guardian or someone else to come in and adopt the kitten for him. So I came here to help my brother adopt a kitten, and even though I live on my own and have my own income she would not let me adopt one. She said something like, "are you with that other Asian guy out there?" What does it matter if I am or not? Then she had this very rude unwelcoming demeanor and told me that she wasn't going to let me adopt a kitten. Despite me saying that I wanted to give the kitten a good home and frankly, why wouldn't you want to allow the kitten to be adopted to someone who wants to provide it a good family. Seriously? She was one of the RUDEST people I've EVER come across. read more

My husband and I used to shop here before moving up north but always felt the customer service was extremely disappointing. There was a much older woman who was always very unfriendly as well as a 30ish assistant manager who seemed annoyed. Both were very unhelpful and unwelcoming making me feel almost uncomfortable asking for any help. I was so pleasantly surprised when I moved back to town and revisited the store. There was a new younger lady who was so helpful and sweet, Kaylia? This employee went well above and beyond to show me exactly what I needed and offered a ton of knowledge. Prior to this young lady's help I would have given this shop a 1star but she has 100% changed my feelings about the shop and as long as she is working there I will be a dedicated customer. I would suggest making sure the other unfriendly employees do not interact with customers as their poor customer service is sure to drive business away! read more

Went here 3 times and each time the person working the register was condescending with regard to how I care for my pets. The selection is made up of the hard-core hippy-dippy stuff, and if you ask for a name brand which they don't carry, they will rudely inform you that they don't carry that because it's "toxic" and they only carry "better" items. Today, in the latest example of this pattern of behavior, I was told that my vet is incompetent for suggesting that I feed my cats Science Diet (which, in case you were wondering, they do not carry -- only more expensive brands, funny how that works...), because apparently the woman working the register thinks she is more qualified than a veterinarian to assess the nutritional quality of food. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this store for rescue pets. Although the contract states that kittens are provided in a healthy condition, ours was not. It had fleas, parasites and worms. It hadn't been tested for feline leukemia or heart worm -- potentially putting our cat at risk. The vet said that our newly adopted kitten had the most unhealthy stool she had ever seen. After paying $200 for a kitten, it is frustrating to pay $300 to then make the kitten healthy -- especially when the contract states "They have been appropriately vaccinated, treated for fleas if present, and dewormed. Our cats are not released to their new homes unless we, the rescuer, believe the cat is in good health." Total lie. The pet shop staff was unapologetic and dismissed our concerns by stating that their kittens "don't come from the best places." I adopted a kitten without a home because it's the right thing to do, and I expect the pet shop to provide a healthy kitten. It's the least they can do, especially when there are children in their store holding these animals. read more
