I'm so in love with you I'll be your saviour, steadfast and true I'll come to your emotional rescue" (Jagger and Richards) A professional organization I belong to was scheduled to hold an axe throwing party/charity fundraiser at Pine & Iron in Hartford last night. But two and a half days ago, they contacted us to cancel because they had closed their doors for good. We didn't want to cancel the event, so what were we to do? Well, Montana Nights came to our rescue and 20 of us had a blast. Our Guardian Angel was manager Carolyn, who worked in a slot for our group, arranged an instructor, pizza and sandwiches from Square Peg, and drink tickets from their bar (beer and axes, what could go wrong?). Anyway, we had a freaking blast at Montana Nights. Our instructor Kyle was great. He gave us a safety talk, demonstrated one hand and two hand throwing techniques, and broke us into two teams for some axe flinging fun. We threw at a conventional bulls eye target, an unconventional bulls eye target where the center moved around, and Tic Tac Toe and Connect Four variations. I threw ten axes in warm ups, and then 20 axes in two ten-frame 4-person team contests. I stuck one out of ten in the warm ups, just one in Game #1, but improved significantly by sticking 4 in the second game. I even had a center Bulls Eye!! By the way, the food from Square Peg was great - lots of different pizzas, grinders cut into fours, and a big salad. Thank you Carolyn and Kyle for saving our event. It was a charity collection event where our members donated new clothing, toys, and household supplies for Madonna House in Norwich, CT. I would love to see Yelp incorporate more of some sort of charity collections at our events. Sort of a "Pay It Forward" philosophy. Everyone can afford to bring a few cans of soup or tuna to donate to a group that needs them. read more

Square Peg Pizzeria has a location in the Newington Montana Nights Axe Throwing venue. I believe it's a newer addition since there are no pizza pics on Yelp besides mine. I recently ordered the Red, White and Greens Pizza for takeout without otherwise enjoying the entertainment options on site. It was my first time ordering a Square Peg Pizza and visiting a Montana Nights. I wasn't quite sure if I should review the pizza on the existing Montana Nights page, or start a new page for a Newington Square Peg Pizzeria, but I went with the Montana Nights page since that already existed. I was curious to see if an entertainment venue could pull off a quality pizzeria style pizza. So I ordered takeout this week. My pizza had Stracciatella, Arugula, Cherry Tomatoes, Extra Tomato Sauce, Sea Salt and Olive Oil on a good chewy and charred crust. It is not the pizza I remember getting at my childhood game-centric party center. The pizza had good colors and ingredient freshness. My one note on the pizza, which I saw assembled, is that the sea salt could have been better distributed across the pizza. I understand the addition of salt for a pizza with these toppings, but certain bites had too much sea salt. While I was on site waiting for my pizza to finish, I toured the venue. In addition to axe throwing, they have pool, darts, a bar, foosball, air hockey, a party room, and cool seating areas. The decor has a rural Montana theme and includes a large bear and life size old truck. I'll definitely return for some fun. My tour was consistent with content I've seen from a recent Yelp event, which is the primary reason I visited. Square Peg brings a different pizza style with modern topping options to Newington and I'd recommend checking them out. If I was holding this Square Peg to the standard I apply to a pizza restaurant like it's Glastonbury flagship, I'd rate this pizza closer to a 4. But, since it's part of a cool entertainment venue that brings other things to the table and they don't have a full restaurant staff, I'm awarding 5 Stars. read more

Montana Nights offers craft beers and fresh squared pizza which I didn't get a chance to taste because I was so full from eating pizza somewhere else. We went here for the first time recently and had an absolute blast! Our "host" was super personable, great at helping/teaching and and absolute laugh. We had an incredible time and cannot wait to come back again. Also, having square peg pizza there is both convenient and delicious. The cheapest therapy! Really great experience! We have since been back three separate times with friends. The employees are amazing and very friendly. They take their time to teach every one exactly how to do the different games that were available. One of the things I really like about this location, is that all of the game tracking is done via digital pads so that you can keep track of everybody's score and spectators can see the scores above the throwing lanes. This was a first for me and most of the other nine Bachelor Party invitees. We had had a great lunch and bowled and played before so some were a bit maxed out. This changed as soon as we met our Axe-Master; she was great. Everything was explained very well and she coordinated several game concepts so our 45 minutes were full of competition and lots of laughs. This was probably the best activity of the day except for the great lunch. The place was modern, clean, well lit and very inviting. So I just got home from a team building night out that Montana Nights so nicely hosted and I now have the axe throwing bug! For those of you who have never done axe throwing, or are apprehensive to try it- don't be! They have trained men and women that they call "axeperts" who quite literally walk you through all the rules, and then train you in the art of axe throwing. They then lead all the games for you and are always there to help in any way needed including keeping score and keeping the games nicely flowing. It's very well executed and takes all the stress out of being a first timer. Our staff had an absolute BLAST. I highly suggest if you're looking for something different to do as a staff appreciation night to try this out. I personally cannot wait to go back with my friends again. Some things to know: it has almost a brewery like feel which means they provide the fun, the beer and wine, but not the food. You are welcome to bring in outside food though which is great! The decor is awesome! Shabby chic with that rustic feel that is comfortable but still feels upscale. If craft beers are your thing then this is your place: they have a HUGE selection of local beers for you to enjoy, along with domestics for the more classic beer drinker along with a few non beer and wine bottled beverages so really something for everyone to enjoy. After our time throwing was up we hung out and played some of the arcade games and some pool and socialized in all the nice comfy couches they had scattered around the establishment. The food here far exceeded my expectations. They serve top notch pizza, wings and desserts. Surprisingly they serve the best cannoli I've ever had. The axe throwing was really fun. The axe masters are patient and easy to learn from. They gave me some solid advice that led to the most epic game winning axe throw ever! I've done axe throwing at home- but this was a little different- the projection target that can change for various games was very cool! And our dedicated staff member for our time was great! I hadn't thrown in over two years- so it took a hot minute for me to warm up and find my groove. With axes flying- we were split into two teams and I ended up on the guys team with my brother. For the first couple of games I felt like the boys were carrying my dead weight- but the 3rd game- the stairstep game is when the blade started finding its mark! I landed the final bullseye on three games- driving home our wins. We were dominating! The last game was especially insane as the rules changed and were were going fast paced competition to race against a 4 minute clock for the most points. Somehow we tied!!! 115 points for each team- whaaaaa???? The final deathmatch was 30 seconds more of the same- and... we lost- lol. Oh well. It was a fun winning streak while it lasted. Besides the axe throwing- they have a bar with local brews, wine and canned cocktails. There is also a pizza place located near the front. Besides the projection and the fun games- the décor was next level! Plush seating, plenty of tables for before or after throwing. They do board game nights and other events- really looked to be a very cool place to gather with friends! And I was more than happy to play with fam and meet new friends! I think the Newington location of Montana Nights may have become my new favorite. The staff are awesome, super friendly and make it feel like they've been your friends for years. I really enjoyed how they kept coaching us throughout our games. It allowed us to keep improving while still having fun. I also loved the addition of their computer screens. It kept things interesting, fun, and challenging. The space is big, but not overwhelming. It almost feels you're hanging out in the biggest, but coziest finished basement. Top all of that with the incredible food from Square Peg and it's really, really hard to beat... I'm excited to go back! read more

Axe throwing is always a fun time with friends. Whether you've done it before or are new, it's got the same element of fun as bowling, but you can wear your own shoes. The way it's organized makes all the difference on your experience, though. At Montana Nights, you are assigned an axpert. They teach you how to throw and act as the game scorer for both teams. I was a little put off by the tip jars. But they do help a lot and are integrated with your assigned timeframe the entire time. PROS: your instructor helps coach you in real time as you're playing. They also keep score and act as a moderator for the game. The staff is friendly and the bar is stocked with a variety of good brews. CONS: the lanes seem short. It's kind dark. You have to play against people you don't know. It's rushed because you can't really take a break since the other team would be waiting for the game, and your instructor goes from game to game rather quickly. Not a lot of freedom to just have fun and get used to it. read more

I enjoyed my first* ever visit to Montana Nights earlier this week. We had a large (~50 person) work-related event that was really fun. The "Axperts" provided excellent upfront instruction for us newbies, and after a few (ok few++) practice throws & some coaching, most of us easily got the hang of it. Their in house pizza was great, and beer selection was not huge, but diverse enough for most. This was a totally new experience, to say the least! My husband had come here with his lodge and had been talking about it, so I mentioned it to my company as a potential company outing location. Well a whole bunch of my co-workers were interested, so we booked one of the private rooms. Our axeperts were totally awesome and helpful, and it was a totally cool way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I'll not be joining an axe throwing team anytime soon for the Olympics, but I'll for sure come back for some more practice. Oh! And their cider selection is one of the most awesome I've ever had. I had a good time considering I was ax throwing for the first time. The instructors were very patient and helped to break down the steps to actually achieving a really good throw. They also made me feel comfortable to participate to throw axes. Aside from Ax throwing they do have an arcade. They have darts, board games that folks can play and a relaxing area where people can just sit and talk. So the atmosphere is very calming and nice and meditative as well. Also can be high energy. The beverages that they serve were very good. They had a good choice of beers. So much fun!!! We booked a private pit for my birthday and six of us went ax throwing. The place is a little hard to find. No big lights or signs, tucked in between some commercial buildings, but the GPS got us there. We checked in and signed our waivers. We were a little early, enough time for a drink and to listen to the live music and visit. The vibe is very hipster, but plenty of room with tables and two bars. They have a couple game tables and video machines. The main attraction is the ax throwing. At our designated time, our Ax-pert, Pickle, came over and reviewed the rules and showed us how to succeed at ax throwing. Pickle stayed with us the entire time and was an excellent teacher, coach and cheerleader. All six of us were scoring points by the second ax game. They have a complete bar and plenty of beer choices. The only complaint was there isn't enough parking when the place is full. I can't wait to go back. read more

This seems to be all the rage right now, so went with a bunch of friends to try it out. It was so much fun! First off, this is a really nice place. Loved the decor and the staff were all warm and friendly. They have a pool table and one of those arcade type basketball things. They also had a live musician (we were there on a Saturday night). This place does have a bar (which was conveniently located right behind our throwing area :-) You get an axe coach that stays with you the whole time and teaches you how to throw. I think that makes a HUGE difference, otherwise you'd be clueless as to what you were doing wrong. Like darts, there are different areas to hit for different points, and so there are quite a few different games to play - the coach will walk you through them. The session was 75mins but I wanted to keep going afterwards. I have no idea why this is so much fun but it is. Give it a go, you'll love it! read more

If you're looking for something different to do in the Newington area check out Montana Nights. Reservations are highly recommended. Once you arrive you are designated an area to wait for your "axepert". Your "axepert" will show your group how to throw an axe and will guide your group through several games as time permits. It was lots of fun and everyone in the group was able to land an axe (kudos to our "axepert"). The location is great and the decor is awesome. It's perfectly fitting. The best part is the repurposed truck turned bar in the middle of the location. It's a nice place to spend an hour or two with friends, start a bachelor/bachelorette party, or shoot some pool! We were there about 4:45p on a Saturday. I'm unsure if they do, but if they don't ... some music would be cool after 5:00p on weekends. I think it would be a nice touch. Very accessible! Went there with my friend who is Deaf and we were assigned Reese, who was very friendly and helpful. He had no problem gesturing to my friend and picking up a few signs along the way. We had a wonderful time. He taught us how to throw an axe, gave us pointers and was very encouraging. Having heard all about axe throwing and wondering what all the rage was about, I was pretty excited when out of the blue a couple friends asked if I wanted to come. Montana Nights is a tough place to find at night - nestled in an industrial complex with little signage, however the large crowd outside helped point us in the right direction. The space inside is large, there are pool tables, arcades, and more importantly a bar to help fuel your axe throwing prowess (scary I know). Right away our host "Thor" was friendly and enthusiastic, throwing the axe around as if it were Mjolnir itself. We shared a session with another group but it turned into a friendly competition with a variety of mini-games including a HORSE or in this case BUFFALO and 21 as well as a free for all. My only complaint was that it all went by too fast. I would definitely recommend a two handed throw for stability - this even netted me a bullseye! Video attached for proof! Regardless, I do wish they gave us more practice throws as the fun ramped up only near the end for me as I got used to the motion. We made a reservation for a Father's Day gathering. Our reservation was for right when they opened. Was surprised that during our 75min reservation we were the only people here on a Friday. The experience overall was a lot of fun! This was our first time axe throwing and we were set up with a specialist who taught us in 10 mins how to throw and took us through all of the many games. This venue sets itself apart from other with the decor, arcade game options, Trivia nights, drink selection, pizza truck on site, and cleanliness. Also most axe throwing sites have a target painted on wood, this site had a projection based target which allowed us to play a variety of games! I could see this place being very busy during colder seasons and the atmosphere being a lot of fun! Drinks were a little pricey at about 7$ or more for one drink. Couldn't give 5 stars because our axe specialist was very much hunting for tips which is understandable but became uncomfortable at times. Even though I was nervous the whole time, it was still fun. I was here with Laura B. and we had a blast!! It is a nice place with a cool, laid back vibe. It is very open and plenty of space. There is a pool table, some video games, a corner that looks like a living room with jingo and some sofas, and that night there was live music as well. In the middle is this amazing old pick up truck that has been converted into a cooler for their large selection of beers, wines, seltzers, and more. On the opposite end of the entrance is where the lanes are for the axe throwing. There is also a large, private party room that also has its own lanes. We were there on a Saturday. It was pretty busy, but not at all crowded with all of the open space. We sat at a table and watched three other large parties of 8 or more people (throwing and just spectating). I highly recommend making a reservation! I had never been axe throwing, so I had no idea what to expect. We were assigned an axepert, who showed us exactly what to do and what not to do. I unfortunately cannot remember his name, but he was so awesome. He was helpful and made sure we were having fun. We laughed, we threw, we even had some bullseyes. It was a great! A unique and fun experience. A great group activity for your more adventurous friends. I am almost certain we will be doing this again. read more
