Montague Wine & Spirits needs a lesson on courtesy if it's to compete in the business of spirits. No wonder the owner comes across as an old curmudgeon! Its average "income" of $400,000 a year is too low for an upscale neighborhood such as Brooklyn Heights unless the "staff" of three are paid slave wages. Best liquor store in Brooklyn Heights! I go there at least twice a week (don't judge ;) and I am always surprised to find a new favorite drink everytime I go. The staff is super knowledgable and helpful - especially Jacob!! He is our go-to guy for all things alcohol. The price range varies so you can get a great quality "cheaper" wine when you want to be low key or top shelf liquor...and everything in between. read more

Good selection without being pushy... I always seem to have a great experience when I have to purchase some wine or liquor. In my most recent visit the staff helped me with choosing a new coconut rum that, according to the staff, "won't taste like sun tan lotion!" While the store presents itself as an eclectic array of wine, the staff lacks in knowledge and customer service. I only received help after asking, waiting, then asking again; I was the only customer in the store. With every bottle I asked about, the store keep would say "never really drink wines like that so I don't know." Well, I use to sell men's' suits, I've never worn men's suits, but I knew what I was selling. I was sold a bad suit because the clerk was not familiar with the product. read more

Last-minute purchase on Christmas Eve... Walked up to the door of Montague Wine and Spirits as the proprietor's son was locking up. He said, "Do you know what you want?" My friend and I said we did. He said "come on in then." Whats the big fuss about this place? The selection is mainly American, nothing is organized, and the prices aren't anything special. I walked in and found myself wandering around searching for Spain and when I found a few bottles, they are the Spanish bottles you find everywhere else. If you are going there for something like Monkey Bay, you obviously aren't that picky about wines. Brooklyn Wine Exchange is ten times better and Michael Towne is way more organized so I can find what I am looking for. read more

One of my favorite places in the Heights. Michael knows his stock very well and is so helpful with all questions. All you have to do is tell him what you are looking for and how much you want to spend and you will get set up. The more info you can give him the better. The selection is vast for wine and alcohol and the prices are good. There are often wine specials so you can routinely get $40 bottles of wine for $20. The place is small and manageable, but again, the selection is nicely variegated and sometimes dizzying making it hard to choose without some assistance. I have always found buying wine confusing and when you can find a place that knows their stuff, provides good tips and does not try to oversell you, you have reached a great place. I just moved out of the neighborhood, but I couldn't leave without leaving Montague Wine a glowing review. It's a fantastic little store, with a great selection. Highly recommend asking Jacob, the manager, for help. He has incredible knowledge, and is great at picking things out based on your preferences -- taste, $$, region, organic, etc. I loved that he always has so many affordable, fun wines to try! I am overall satisfied with this liquor store. Albeit small-scale, they have a decent selection and the prices are not outrageous. Last week, I got a bottle of decent Irish whiskey, Benromach, for about $32 for someone. This is not the easiest whiskey to find, so I was pretty happy. I have also been to their Saturday wine tastings - I have sampled some nice organic French wines. I picked up one of the bottles of red for my father for a family occasion. He seemed to be pretty happy with it and it was only about $18 or $19. read more

Things that suck about wine stores: too pretentious to help, pushy when you finally ask for help, expensive. Things that are awesome about Montague Wines: extremely friendly, never pushy, good selection, and they always help you find the type of wine you want in the price range you ask for. Reviewing a neighborhood wine shop should usually be handled in context. If you are in the BK heights area, this is where you should go IF you aren't a wine nerd that totally knows their stuff. I feel like I can rely on the staff here to recommend reasonably priced, utterly drinkable bottles. I haven't had good luck with this at other shops in the area. I wouldn't really go here for other spirits because their prices are definitely not the lowest, but if you need some inspiration on what wine to serve with a meal or bring along to an event, these guys can help you out. read more

I recently moved to Brooklyn Heights and have visited MW&S on several occasions. SO... when I had a friend coming over at 10:55 PM on a Saturday evening and was in need of a red wine (it was a cold night) I called to see if the person working would be willing to wait for me to sprint over for a few bottles of wine. He said he would stay open a few minutes past 11 PM (their closing hour), and I say this cautiously... because I do not want to encourage this behavior, BUT I sprinted from 10 blocks away and my face fell when I saw the lights were off as I approached. As I walked by JUST to make sure it was closed I walked past the employee who said, "Were you the one who called?" AND I say, "YES!!" and he REOPENED the store (read: unlocked, unalarmed, raised the gate) so I could quickly purchase 3 bottles of wine and be on my merry way. I am SO very appreciative of that type of customer service, and with forever be a fan and customer of MW&S. Thank you, sir! read more

This is another great wine shop in the Brooklyn Heights area. It stocks a huge amount of inventory into such a tiny place! While the Heights Chateau on Atlantic/Henry doesn't carry much variety of certain spirits, Montague Wine more than makes up for it. The staff here is excellent -- friendly, knowledgeable and HONEST! My recent foray into the grappa world brought me here once again, and I was happy to find that not only did the gentleman behind the counter try most of the grappas he carried, he was honest enough to tell me that if I bought the most expensive grappa on the shelf, I really would just be buying the name. [My first grappa purchase, for those of you who want to know: a bottle of Alexander Grappa Platinum. Very smooth, with a hint of cherries and licorice (to my untrained palate, at least!). Highly recommended. This bottle will have a place on my bar.] Every time I exit the store, I leave just a little more educated...and a little more of a lush. But that's not such a bad thing, right? And like most wine shops here in NY, free local delivery. read more

I'll never go back to Michael Towne! Paying those high mark-ups just make me frown. Sure their prices are rent driven, But I refuse to contribute to this area's high cost of living. Here I got a bottle of Monkey Bay for 3 to 4 dollars less. I'm so impressed! Saturday wine tastings they offer generous pours. It makes me want to keep coming back here for more! Although Mike loves to offer his customers new wines to try, I never felt the pressure to buy. It's a great strategy since I notice the volume of business this place does, And I always leave here feeling slightly buzzed. read more

A great neighborhood go-to shop. Well curated selection of both wines and whiskeys! Good price ranges, tastings, service and delivery.

Expect to be waited on hand and foot (well, I am exagerrating a bit). But honestly, the staff here does back flips for you. Michael is smart, attentive and can make imaginative suggestions that will not rob your wallet. I regularly walk into this place and say - "what's good for $10?" No one blinks: and they have the goods! This place likes to buy close-outs and they get super deals. Don't expect a huge place. It is the size of your tiny kitchen. They do, however, have the best selection and their prices are cheaper than Michael Towne. read more

I don't drink much, but when I do - Montague Wine and Spirits is the place to go. Every visit, I have found the staff to be quite pleasant, and more than helpful in trying to choose the perfect wine. They ask the right questions, and help narrow down the choices easily. And I have noticed that they don't just lean me toward the most expensive option - this tells me they are interested in actually pairing the right wine with my food than making the highest sale. The best wine and liquor store in Brooklyn! The expertise of the wine staff is truly impressive. I'm especially wowed with a oenophile who works there named Jeff. He is honest, smart, funny and knows more about wine than any one I know. I trust his judgment implicitly! Aside from the great selections and prices of wines, the store also has an excellent selection of all other kinds of liquors and liquers (sp?), my favorite. "Candy is dandy/but liquor is quicker" -- liqueurs give you both. I used to live in New York and now am in Salt Lake City. I wish Montague Wines could open a branch here. read more

I really like the staff in here, which for me is pretty important because I don't know much about wine and like to have some help when selecting. Don't be deterred by the small size - they have a great selection, and many bottles of white refrigerated. Also have a decent selection of spirits considering that doesn't seem to be their focus.
