Best liquor store in Brooklyn Heights! I go there at least twice a week (don't judge ;) and I am always surprised to find a new favorite drink everytime I go. The staff is super knowledgable and helpful - especially Jacob!! He is our go-to guy for all things alcohol. The price range varies so you can get a great quality "cheaper" wine when you want to be low key or top shelf liquor...and everything in between. read more

Great selection and pristine customer service. The item I was shopping for was not stocked at any other local liquor store.

Great service. I've been a customer for years, I've always loved the pricing selections and best of all suggestions

Chris was pleasant, knowledgeable definitely a spot you want to visit when in the area. read more

I found some awesome natural wines here! I'll definitely be back. The staff was perfectly helpful and friendly as well. Thanks! read more

Pretty good selection of wines and whiskeys (the good stuff is by the door in a locked case, so head there first if that's what you're looking for). Refrigerated section in the back if you need white wine ready to drink. read more

there is a great selection of affordable and higher end wine, which is great. I went in on a Saturday and wasn't spoken to which is kind of disappointing. I would have welcomed some opinions and customer service. This won't stop me from going back and hopefully it'll be different the next time. read more

Good selection without being pushy... I always seem to have a great experience when I have to purchase some wine or liquor. In my most recent visit the staff helped me with choosing a new coconut rum that, according to the staff, "won't taste like sun tan lotion!" I appreciated the humor and better yet, their recommendation was spot on!! Give them a shot; you won't be disappointed! read more

Adorable shop located a stones throw away from my sons new apartment. Lovely knowledgeable young man behind the counter suggested a new Pinot Grigio that I fell in love with. Terrific prices and great customer service, I'm so happy I found this little gem! read more

While the store presents itself as an eclectic array of wine, the staff lacks in knowledge and customer service. I only received help after asking, waiting, then asking again; I was the only customer in the store. With every bottle I asked about, the store keep would say "never really drink wines like that so I don't know." Well, I use to sell men's' suits, I've never worn men's suits, but I knew what I was selling. I was sold a bad suit because the clerk was not familiar with the product. read more

Whats the big fuss about this place? The selection is mainly American, nothing is organized, and the prices aren't anything special. I walked in and found myself wandering around searching for Spain and when I found a few bottles, they are the Spanish bottles you find everywhere else. If you are going there for something like Monkey Bay, you obviously aren't that picky about wines. Brooklyn Wine Exchange is ten times better and Michael Towne is way more organized so I can find what I am looking for. read more

One of my favorite places in the Heights. Michael knows his stock very well and is so helpful with all questions. All you have to do is tell him what you are looking for and how much you want to spend and you will get set up. The more info you can give him the better. The selection is vast for wine and alcohol and the prices are good. There are often wine specials so you can routinely get $40 bottles of wine for $20. The place is small and manageable, but again, the selection is nicely variegated and sometimes dizzying making it hard to choose without some assistance. I have always found buying wine confusing and when you can find a place that knows their stuff, provides good tips and does not try to oversell you, you have reached a great place. This place is a great place and there is no other place I would go to in Brooklyn Heights. read more

Last-minute purchase on Christmas Eve... Walked up to the door of Montague Wine and Spirits as the proprietor's son was locking up. He said, "Do you know what you want?" My friend and I said we did. He said "come on in then." He not only rang us up but he was also willing to sprint downstairs for the item we wanted it was no longer on the shelf. #Wow That kind of friendly, neighborhood service deserves more than a five stars review. Thank you! read more

I am overall satisfied with this liquor store. Albeit small-scale, they have a decent selection and the prices are not outrageous. Last week, I got a bottle of decent Irish whiskey, Benromach, for about $32 for someone. This is not the easiest whiskey to find, so I was pretty happy. I have also been to their Saturday wine tastings - I have sampled some nice organic French wines. I picked up one of the bottles of red for my father for a family occasion. He seemed to be pretty happy with it and it was only about $18 or $19. read more

Things that suck about wine stores: too pretentious to help, pushy when you finally ask for help, expensive. Things that are awesome about Montague Wines: extremely friendly, never pushy, good selection, and they always help you find the type of wine you want in the price range you ask for. All recommendations have been great. Solid deals on liquor as well. read more

I just moved out of the neighborhood, but I couldn't leave without leaving Montague Wine a glowing review. It's a fantastic little store, with a great selection. Highly recommend asking Jacob, the manager, for help. He has incredible knowledge, and is great at picking things out based on your preferences -- taste, $$, region, organic, etc. I loved that he always has so many affordable, fun wines to try! Highly recommend Jacob and Montague. read more

Be carful, they are gouging prices up to 30% more than other stores in neighborhood. Wouldn't shop there.

Reviewing a neighborhood wine shop should usually be handled in context. If you are in the BK heights area, this is where you should go IF you aren't a wine nerd that totally knows their stuff. I feel like I can rely on the staff here to recommend reasonably priced, utterly drinkable bottles. I haven't had good luck with this at other shops in the area. I wouldn't really go here for other spirits because their prices are definitely not the lowest, but if you need some inspiration on what wine to serve with a meal or bring along to an event, these guys can help you out. read more

This place is the real deal. The neighborhood wine shop you always dreamed of having nearby. When you step inside you are immediately greeted by professionalism without the pretension. I've learned a lot from all of the employees here, especially from Jacob and I've never been disappointed. Excellent wine recommendations given by experts who lead with kindness and a contagious passion. Thank you and see you soon! read more

I recently moved to Brooklyn Heights and have visited MW&S on several occasions. SO... when I had a friend coming over at 10:55 PM on a Saturday evening and was in need of a red wine (it was a cold night) I called to see if the person working would be willing to wait for me to sprint over for a few bottles of wine. He said he would stay open a few minutes past 11 PM (their closing hour), and I say this cautiously... because I do not want to encourage this behavior, BUT I sprinted from 10 blocks away and my face fell when I saw the lights were off as I approached. As I walked by JUST to make sure it was closed I walked past the employee who said, "Were you the one who called?" AND I say, "YES!!" and he REOPENED the store (read: unlocked, unalarmed, raised the gate) so I could quickly purchase 3 bottles of wine and be on my merry way. I am SO very appreciative of that type of customer service, and with forever be a fan and customer of MW&S. Thank you, sir! read more

This is another great wine shop in the Brooklyn Heights area. It stocks a huge amount of inventory into such a tiny place! While the Heights Chateau on Atlantic/Henry doesn't carry much variety of certain spirits, Montague Wine more than makes up for it. The staff here is excellent -- friendly, knowledgeable and HONEST! My recent foray into the grappa world brought me here once again, and I was happy to find that not only did the gentleman behind the counter try most of the grappas he carried, he was honest enough to tell me that if I bought the most expensive grappa on the shelf, I really would just be buying the name. [My first grappa purchase, for those of you who want to know: a bottle of Alexander Grappa Platinum. Very smooth, with a hint of cherries and licorice (to my untrained palate, at least!). Highly recommended. This bottle will have a place on my bar.] Every time I exit the store, I leave just a little more educated...and a little more of a lush. But that's not such a bad thing, right? And like most wine shops here in NY, free local delivery. read more

I'll never go back to Michael Towne! Paying those high mark-ups just make me frown. Sure their prices are rent driven, But I refuse to contribute to this area's high cost of living. Here I got a bottle of Monkey Bay for 3 to 4 dollars less. I'm so impressed! Saturday wine tastings they offer generous pours. It makes me want to keep coming back here for more! Although Mike loves to offer his customers new wines to try, I never felt the pressure to buy. It's a great strategy since I notice the volume of business this place does, And I always leave here feeling slightly buzzed. read more

I can only write this because I don't have a picture posted with my profile (I live in the vicinity of the Stinky/Smith and Vine empire): while i could walk the 3 minutes to Smith St., I think it's worth the 25 minutes to go to Montague--even if only to grab a ten dollar bottle of wine. read more

Now this is what I'm talking about! Vast selection of wines, too many to even consider. I could literally stay here all day talking to the manager. This place contributes to why Brooklyn is so great! read more

i hesitate to write this review because..um, well, see below. they have everything. not only that, but there's an older guy that works there that is super nice. and super knowledgable about a good wine. and a younger one that is one of the hottest boys i've seen in the city. hey, it needed to be said. but now that i've put it on the internet, flocks of girls will run to montague wine and spirits in search of hottie wine man. well...don't. cuz he's pretty. mmm. pretty boy. i guess this review isn't really a review for the store itself, but for the guy. five stars, my man. five stars. read more

A great neighborhood go-to shop. Well curated selection of both wines and whiskeys! Good price ranges, tastings, service and delivery.

Expect to be waited on hand and foot (well, I am exagerrating a bit). But honestly, the staff here does back flips for you. Michael is smart, attentive and can make imaginative suggestions that will not rob your wallet. I regularly walk into this place and say - "what's good for $10?" No one blinks: and they have the goods! This place likes to buy close-outs and they get super deals. Don't expect a huge place. It is the size of your tiny kitchen. They do, however, have the best selection and their prices are cheaper than Michael Towne. read more

Love these guys. Very friendly, very helpful and they deliver! I'll never carry wine up to my 5th floor apt again :)

i stopped in today to see what they have to offer. the man behind the counter was nice and not pushy. don't hesitate to ask for advice. their selection was varied, and the space was clean. i like it! read more

There are tons of apps out there, but these folks have better service, less fees, and are on point.

Friendly staff. Not the largest selection but has the basics. Will come back since it's a convenient location to where I am.

Good selection, friendly staff and free delivery in the neighborhood - my favorite in BK Heights!

I don't drink much, but when I do - Montague Wine and Spirits is the place to go. Every visit, I have found the staff to be quite pleasant, and more than helpful in trying to choose the perfect wine. They ask the right questions, and help narrow down the choices easily. And I have noticed that they don't just lean me toward the most expensive option - this tells me they are interested in actually pairing the right wine with my food than making the highest sale. Thanks guys! Definitely recommend to stop by. Store is conveniently located on Montague, clean, neat, well organized and for a small store, they sure have a lot of options. Check it out, you will find something I guarantee it! read more

Very helpful staff. Just moved to Downtown BK and the prices are by far the best compared to all the other stores I've been to in the area. A little bit more of a walk for me - but worth it. Great selection and found what I wanted. read more

The best wine and liquor store in Brooklyn! The expertise of the wine staff is truly impressive. I'm especially wowed with a oenophile who works there named Jeff. He is honest, smart, funny and knows more about wine than any one I know. I trust his judgment implicitly! Aside from the great selections and prices of wines, the store also has an excellent selection of all other kinds of liquors and liquers (sp?), my favorite. "Candy is dandy/but liquor is quicker" -- liqueurs give you both. I used to live in New York and now am in Salt Lake City. I wish Montague Wines could open a branch here. read more

Best wine store in the neighborhood. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Like a great independent bookstore, but for wine.

I really like the staff in here, which for me is pretty important because I don't know much about wine and like to have some help when selecting. Don't be deterred by the small size - they have a great selection, and many bottles of white refrigerated. Also have a decent selection of spirits considering that doesn't seem to be their focus. They know a lot about whiskey and bourbon too. Love this place (and love being just two blocks away from it). read more

Ditto Jonathan G.'s review below (which I recommend), end to end. Heights Chateau is pretty good and it's about the same distance from me, but I always go to MW&S -- cozy place, better service, better suggestions, great specials, never any attitude. It's my favorite wine store ever. read more

As a wine professional, I was extremely impressed with the balanced character of the selection as well as the reasonable prices. Both domestic and foreign wines are well chosen and interesting, and there is lots of value. Talk to the staff. They are awesome.
