Years ago I worked for some punks. One of them had, "Mamma tried", tattooed on her forearms as a warning to those who met her with crossed arms. She moved to the Carolinas, bought herself a house with her LES bartender's salary, and fucked right off. This joint reminds me of her. No televisions. I almost don't want to tell you about Mama Tried because this place feels like one of those rare Brooklyn secrets... at least it did the other night as my two friends and I closed the place down on a Thursday night! I love the "under the bridge" vibes (under the BQE at least?). As our Uber pulled up, I knew we landed at "just the right place" for late night beverages (and yes, hallelujah, they have a better than decent selection of wines!) It's so damned inviting. This is my local spot and I love it. I love everyone that works here and always meet amazing people. There's usually great live music in the backyard. I really wanted to like this place, given the reviews and word of mouth. I stopped by here before dinner in Industry City. Grabbed a seat at the bar to get a drink, and despite being acknowledged by the bartender when I sat down, i had to wait 5-10 mins to get my first drink (the bar only had 4 patrons sitting at the bar). The beer selection here is fine, with a bunch of local offerings. I wanted to get a cocktail as a second drink, but didn't want to wait for the drink to be made. I ended up bouncing after the first drink. I may try visiting again in the future. read more

Just tried this place on a rainy Sunday night, and even then people were constantly trickling in. The bartender Val was warm and friendly and awesome (did shots with us). We got the veggie chili and chips and it was very good and filling, which helped us drink more ;) The decor is retro and kitschy and awesome. Will have to come back to check out live music some time when it's not raining. They also sell kickass shirts. This bar is an enigma. It's located in a very strange location, and every time I drive past it, I see people in their large yard and music pumping. So I finally had the chance to stop in, and it's every bit as great as you'd imagine! Large yard with a ton of seating. Inside is real retro chic. Unfortunately, a low-key divey ambiance, spacious backyard, friendly bartenders and fairly priced drinks don't make up for owner's anger issues and hostility ruining the experience. If you see a Gavin McGuiness look-a-like glaring at you while teetering on the verge of psychosis, know that it is the owner preemptively staring you down, should you - a paying guest - use more than some unspecified allotted amount of firewood left unmarked for patrons to stoke the fire. Judy's and Minnie's are much more civilized (though marginally higher priced) options located within walking distance should your definition of a good time not entail being treated as a potential firewood bandit/thief-in-the-waiting by a deranged proprietor chomping at the bit to make you an unwitting target of his seething rage. read more

I came here late after work to support a friend of a friend's band, and I was honestly pleasantly surprised with what a nice venue it is. The bar itself looks small, but it's very cozy. I like the retro bar look (I think) they're going for. Plus the drinks are pretty good too - I got the house negroni and I thought it came out pretty well. It hits hard and they put just the right amount of orange essence and peel to offset the alcohol. The main draw of this bar is the backyard venue though. It felt like I was in a private backyard. The deco made it cozier as well too, and nothing feels better than enjoying a great cocktail in someone's backyard while listening to a live jam session. Spent Friday evening with friends at Mama Tried. With a cool live band, excellent bartenders, and solid drinks, Mama Tried is an excellent bar to spend the night. Quality: Mama Tried has a very cool vibe with the ability to transform throughout the night. If you come in early, you get a solid cocktail bar. In the evenings they frequently have live music, making the outdoor patio the place to be. And late at night it becomes an energetic hangout, with lots of folks having a good time. It is flawless transitions, and it has the space and the staff to handle it all. During my visit I made the mistake of ordering a Cucumber Jalapeno Margarita, when it was too busy. It was tasty, but it held up the process when folks were looking to grab drinks and go. I stuck with Other Half's Green City IPA for the rest of my visit, a great beer to have on tap. Quantity: This is definitely the place for simple mixed drinks and beers. The drinks are strong and the beer pours are solid. Value: $11-$12 for Cocktails. $7-$8 for Draft Beers. Ambiance: Mama Tried is located in Sunset Park, between Park Slope and Industry City, in Brooklyn. It is an island, with very few other bars or restaurants in the area. This is likely how they snagged such a big space. The inside area feels like it may have been a diner at some point. With long counter and then tables along the windows. The only issue is the AC, which is not very good so it gets steamy inside. Outside they have a fairly big patio, with slightly raised stage at one end. Tables are spread across the space and little elements of decor were incorporated. The band was playing Grateful Dead covers, and inside the music seemed to match the mood. Crowd: With a live band in the outdoor patio area, it was very busy. Most folks were gathered outside and only streamed in for drinks. However, with several large tables inside as well as the bar, some guests ended up staying inside for a bit. Service: They must have known it was going to be busy, as they had three great bartenders ensuring drinks were out quickly. Parking: Street parking can be found easily in this industrial area of Brooklyn. read more

"It's like we're in a Quintin Tarantino movie without the shootout." This place has the coolest old-school vibe. Your Instagram will never be the same. I've come here twice now - once on a warm Saturday night when it was PACKED and once on a rainy Friday night when it was near-empty. Both times were excellent - it has a real neighborhood feel (with impeccable design). Absolutely love the free vintage jukebox. It's in a bit of a nightlife wasteland under the highway, but it's fun to come here after getting a bite to eat at Japan Village (or anywhere in Industry City). I agree with another reviewer that they should make better use of the backyard space - would love to see some tables/lights/decorations in the back this summer. read more

I'd like to give this place 3-1/2 stars, but that's not an option, so 3 it is. If you find yourself in that odd ugly stretch under the BQE that leads to Industry City, why not pop in and give this place a try? I mean, the witty name alone earns it the benefit of the doubt. And the exterior of the place is painted mint green, so you're not likely to miss it. The space isn't too large, has a sort of retro diner'ish feel to it. The bar seats maybe 15 people and there are a handful of tables as well. It was a nice day, so we headed straight to the outdoor area. There was already a large group settled in the start of the outdoor space and the balance of the area didn't appear set up for use. That brings me to my first suggestion: utilize that nice big outdoor area! It doesn't have to be fancy, just put out picnic tables or something. When it's a nice day, it's good to have a daylight option, rather than being confined to a dark, moody bar environment. We ended up sitting inside at the bar. The menu consists of a handful of $12 cocktails and wine ($8-11) and there's a decent number of beers ($4-8) via draft and can. I ended up having a cocktail called Passionate Tart. It was decent, but I wanted it more tart/less sweet and with more ice. The hub had a draft beer, so nothing particularly interesting to report there, aside from the fact that it was served in a metal cup that kept it nice and cold. Seated at the bar drinking a craft cocktail, I wondered where the bar snacks were. Yep, it would be a nice touch to offer nuts or Chex mix or something...even if the noshes aren't free. People will stay longer and drink more if they're nibbling on something. I think this place may end up being an out-of-the-way gem, they just need some time to find their groove and maximize their potential, which I envision as a 4.5. We'll definitely give it another try this summer. We like quirky, what can we say? read more

I love dive bars, and this location is a gem. To me this a shot and beer type of place which are my favorites to begin with.

Under the BQE, you'll find a mint-walled oasis with a neon light that says "Mama Tried." It beckons you to come in for a drink. Super delicious happy hour cocktails/wine. Seriously, you can't go wrong. I encourage you to go pee in the bathroom. The walls are floral, the bathroom is blacklight-lit. Groundbreaking. There's an outdoor area, covered in astroturf. The seats are nothing fancy, and neither are the views (unless you like debris flying into your face), so I think your best bet is to stay inside. That's okay, though. The interior is beautiful and gives off Tarantino movie vibes. read more

I like this bar so much, I'm almost scared to write about it. (If you've been in this town long enough, you know exactly what I mean.) But in the interest of making sure the place stays open, here goes... Mama Tried looks "retro" without being obnoxious about it. They do truly unique, high-end cocktails despite a complete lack of ironic mustaches or insufferable self-importance behind the bar. And they have managed--in the midst of the current no-man's-land that is 3rd Ave. beneath the BQE--to create a comfortable oasis that feels stylish and intimate without being snotty or exclusive. In this age of LED lighting, they just installed one of the most beautiful new neon signs in the city. And don't forget the free jukebox loaded with classic 45 rpm records!
