Went here after my Trader Joes haul and regretted buying anything upon leaving the store. The salesperson in there offered to help an older white woman who had just entered the store when I had been in there searching for a solid 5 mins at that point. Then when I greeted the cashier, he simply ignored me and asked if I wanted a bag after having a full on banter-filled convo with the white couple ahead of me in line. Not just wine. This store is another favorite of mine. Pre-Covid, they routinely had wine tastings (or Whiskey, special spirits, etc.) and if i was in the area at the time, made it my business to drop in. I miss those days as a small group would gather and learn about the selected choice of the day followed by samples. Their chalkboard outside also listed specific classes although i did not have the opportunity to participate. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. Their price points can serve all budgets and the selection is extensive considering the size of the store. I always found myself browsing the table in the middle of the store that contained a selection of very reasonably priced wines. I continue to buy this delicious white wine in particular--from Portugal that is only $9.80, but you'd never guess. It has a slight effervescence and goes well with a BBQ or seafood dinner. But I have also bought some good Rose and Red wine in the past. During the pandemic, browsing is not permitted in the store (unlike others with a capacity limit). When they first re-opened, an employee would be situated at the entrance and you had to make an attempt to describe what you were interested in buying. A bit challenging unless you knew the specific brand name. They now allow entrance into the store, but just a few feet in. A rope separates one from entering further. Basically, it allows one to ask questions or make a selection. Yeah, it is a bummer. On a lighter note, whenever you find yourself shopping at Trader Joe's (right next door) or are in the area and need a good bottle for dinner or a gift, check out Brooklyn Wine Exchange. read more

This wine shop keeps getting better and better. During Covid they're only letting a few people inside at a time, and there's no wandering around the shop like you used to, as they have everything past the register blocked off. The staff is always quick to welcome you and ask you what you're looking for. I've come prepared a few times (after looking on their website & deciding which wines I want before going into the store), but I've also gone in on multiple occasions with a random wine or a type of wine in mind, and every person that's helped me has been wonderful at 1) finding the wine I'm looking for or 2) suggesting similar wines or bottles that I might like. I'm slowly learning which wines I'm more into, so I appreciate that they're really knowledgeable and don't make you feel out of place if you're a novice. The online ordering/in store pick up option is also a nice touch. Super easy and takes away any stress if you struggle making decisions on the spot. Cheap wine and Horrible Customer Service!!!! Went back to this store to give constructive feedback on a malbec that I purchased. The wine tasted like a vinegar gone bad. Not to mention that the tannins turned my tongue black. As I exit the store, the young woman that I spoke to says "Well, you don't need to come back." I proceed to go back in to request the manager's name and contact to which I'm told that I cannot have it. All the while, I'm explaining what happened to another female employee, she's consoling the one that was rude to me telling her that it's going to be o.k. One of the female employees also called me combative for simply expressing my concern over my customer service experience. I've never in my entire life witnessed this type of behavior where employees are consoled and coddled after being rude and customers are gaslighted. Save your money and go where you're valued because this place clearly doesn't. read more

One bad apple and all . . . I've been a customer of BWE since this place opened, as well as at Smith & Vine, which is/was owned by the same people. So, in total, for decades. (I don't remember when S&V opened but it was in the early 90s.) I've spent easily over $10K over the years between the two places. So it's both annoying and offensive that one of the employees has begun following me around like I'm a shoplifter. The first time I thought I might have imaged it, the 2nd time confirmed it (I usually don't enter the store now if I see him at the register), but tonight was the worst. The other times he came out from behind the register, stood a few feet away and watched me like a hawk, then followed me to check out. Tonight I was the only customer in the store and was in full view of the two people at the register (not him.) But when he saw me come in he came out from the back (about 50 feet away) and stood, quite obviously, watching me from a distance of about 10 feet away while I made my selection and then walked me over to the check out. If anyone from the store reads these, I'd like an e-mail address where I can make a formal complaint. This is harassment pure and simple. I've never shoplifted and I've been a regular customer since before this fool was born. I'm not going to put up with being made to feel uncomfortable in a neighborhood store that I've supported since it opened. I have no idea why he feels the need to harass me but it needs to stop. Phenomenal selections that accompany their exceptional service WITH knowledge! Picked up some Roses, Sauvignon Blancs, Tequilas and Bourbons, which were all great! The salesperson, who resembles Jenny Pulos, is extremely knowledgeable, friendly and she encourages tastings of available samples, which allows for new discoveries. Always a great thing. I've never actually bought the signature product at Brooklyn Wine Exchange, but come here frequently for spirits. The cozy atmosphere verges on clubby, as the liquor bottles on the shelves don't include what most people would consider to be mass market names. If you come in for a bottle of gin, for example, don't expect to find Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray; do, by all means, try something wonderful and perhaps new like Barr Hill. I imagine the staff to be quite knowledgeable, but I don't tend to ask questions about things I can learn on my own. On a quiet day, if you look lost, they will offer assistance before you ask. Their website is excellent, offering the opportunity to educate oneself on all the various offerings before your visit. This wine shop is so brand new that it is scheduled to open in 4 days, 1 hour, 45 minutes, and 7 seconds, according to their website. However, my gf and I found it open last night... Aptly located next door to Trader Joe's, the interior of this wine shop is very bare (take my words with a grain of salt, however, since by the time it opens "for real", things may have changed): basically bottles of wine over shelves, and a large table in the middle with wines at $12 or less a bottle. VH and I were looking for a cheap wine to cook a risotto (mushroom and carrots risotto; it came out just eh...it needs some work), and I chose a Leone De Castris Salice Salentino [1]. This is a strong wine, with hints of fruits like cherry and red berry. For ourselves VH chose (they were having a wine tasting) a white Chateau des Hospitaliers Languedoc: dry and medium bodied, 13% ABV. Good choice! This place certainly has great bargains. I can always count on this spot to find anything my taste buds desire. I like red or white wines with a fruit note and lucky for me, there is plenty. Family and friends had always enjoy the selections that I bring home. I would like to point out that I like how clean and how neatly organized the store is. It makes it easy for customers like me to find the country, region, red or wine, and descriptions. Not to mention, wide variety of wine from different regions of the world. There is also a table of weekly selected wines with a generous discount price. If you are interested in hard liquor, whiskey, or sake; they have it here as well! I leave one star for the selection. It's great! But I've frequented this place many times after my shopping at Trader Joe's and often regret it. I have never ever received any sort of customer service. It's easy to pull the I'm black card and say the shop is racist. But not necessary to go that far. I will say. As a black person stepping into neighborhoods where the community is predominantly white the service is just not extended to people who look like me. For many reasons... they don't think I have the knowledge of wine & spirits. Don't think I'm going to spend much, and just don't care wether I have an opinion on service or not. I walked in today had crazy bags in my hand and the employee was behind the counter right at the door and continued to use his phone or do whatever it was that was more important than acknowledging me. It was the delivery guy who was leaving who asked if he could help me. I Was in there for at least 3 mins (only customer) Got not one hello or an ask as to what I was looking for and this is not new to my visits here. In the moment I just made the decision to walk out and spend my money elsewhere. As I was walking out I simply said to the guy "It isn't nice not to greet your customers" he replied. "Oh sorry have a nice day though" As a woman of color I choose to see and support spaces that see and support me. So In my opinion if you walk in here and you don't get acknowledged as at least being a human and supporting customer, save your money and spend it elsewhere. read more

I've been coming to this place for several years now and they are the friendliest, most informative liquor shop I've been to. Be advised that the liquor selection tends a little unusual, so if you're looking for cheap grain alcohol for your frat punch you won't find it, and they won't necessarily have every big brand you've ever heard of, but that's because they curate an interesting (albeit smaller) selection of liquors in every category and can help you find the right one for the right purpose. As for wine, the selection is huge, well labeled, and you can trust the staff to help you find the right thing at the right price. Don't be shy to ask questions, they want to help and have you to end up happy. For people who complain they are rude, I've never found that and I'm here weekly. This is the coolest wine shop in the already cloyingly cool Cobble Hill. The customer service is very patient and attentive void of any pretense. They have frequent tastings and FREE classes. They also offer classes you can take for a nominal fee, all of which are great. They usually offer a discount to purchase bottles of wine featured in the classes. This place is great on its own, but it is sooooo conveniently located next to places you'd purchase groceries at. So if you're cooking dinner (let's be real, you're getting prepared food), pick up a bottle of wine or two. While you're there, sample some of their featured offerings. OK, must be serendipity. When you are looking for a wine store, and think, mmm, none to be found, and you start to feel glum, but then, you walk some more, and look up, and wow there it is. A wine store! I didn't know it at the time, but this place is new. After buying some groceries at TJs next door, we stopped in here to pick up some wine for cooking and imbibing! Inside, it was pretty bare, and in the distance you could still see cardboard boxes. They were having a wine tasting of the Languedoc region and I tried one of the whites (Chateau des Hospitaliers), and it was just what I liked. Dry and crisp and 13% ABV, what a hit! The current main attraction is a center table with $12 or less wines. This is a great location, rigt next to TJs, I hope they do well ;-) read more

I am a big fan of Brooklyn Wine Exchange, not only as a customer but also as a business critic. Their location is perfect (right next to the wine-free Trader Joe's) & their staff is exceptional. You will not get one ounce of pretension at this local wine shop, just eager friendly faces with extensive wine knowledge. The only reason I did not give this a 5 star rating is that I think their collection (specifically their under $12 table) still has room for expansion. A+ staff, A decor, A+ business model. Open to public wine classes & awesome membership subscriptions to keep you coming back. They are integrated with 4square with great incentives and again I cannot compliment the staff enough! I tried an Apple Wine that was just okay but I also got a Prosecco Champagne that was pretty yummy. I brought two of these - one of which I brought to a BBQ as a gift. My only complaint is about their variety, but at the same time I think it's pretty cool that they try to only source from local wineries and spirits-crafters. My wife and I have been frequent shoppers generally spending several hundred dollars per purchase. Why have we returned? It's convenient for quick run of the mill purchases. However, as a wine collector (over 1,000 bottles in my cell) it is 1) over-priced by 20% vs general market and 2) very limited selections. If you are interested in middle of the road wines at a 20% premium it's fine. If you are seeking wine selection assistance this is certainly not the place. On several occasions I asked for commentary about specific wines on their shelves and all I got - at best - was, "...a wonderful vineyard..." That's not exactly what I would call feed back. The dude with the glasses - I assume he's owner - is rude and completely detached from providing any insight. As I noted earlier, I have a decent wine collection (Gaja, Screaming Eagle, various Bordeaux vintages, Harlan Estates etc etc) and only seek an opinion in wines I haven't tasted. This guy us useless. Try Morrell Wines, Astor Wines, Sotherby auctions and , Zachy's. Try PJ Wines in northern Manhattan (they deliver all over the city and reasonably priced (found great Priorats and Chateau D'Yquem). Go down the street to Heights Chateau. Wonderful staff polite. This place will never again see my business. Too rude and lack of knowledge. And over-priced! I am happy to pay $500+ for a bottle of something I seek. But, to pay 20%-30% above market for run of the mill wines with the unpleasant attitude is a bit too much to swallow. I've been shopping here since I moved to Brooklyn, since it is very close to my place and conveniently located next to Trader Joe's - one that does not sell liquor. It is a very cute shop with great staff! They are always willing to help you find what you are looking for without being pushy. They have helped me save money multiple times by suggesting more cost effective options to wines I was choosing. They have a very good selection of wines from several parts of the world, in addition to liquor - especially from smaller producers. You will find some different stuff here. Don't expect to find the usual big brands. That is my favorite part about them. They usually have some of those producers/distributors come and do tastings for the customers. It can be very interesting to learn from them as well. Brooklyn Wine Exchange offers a wine club monthly subscription and a membership. They also offer a variety of classes for members and non-members. read more

When you're a high powered designer socialite astronaut writer like myself you get invited to a lot of dinner parties and you gotta bring something even when you aren't asked to. Chips? Guacamole? A sixer of Pork Slap? No you heathen. Sweet berry wine! What this place lacks in size it makes up for in careful selections and varieties from almost every region of the world except central Ohio (shittiest wines ever). I've found everything from light Greek wines, super oakey Napas, explosive Spaniards and an array of French wines that would humble even the most snooty Parisian. Not really shoppin for wine? They also carry a small selection of rums, gins, whiskies, liqueurs and other odds and ends that only your mustachioed cocktail nerd friends know what to do with. If you want some real badass points buy one of the little bottles of moonshine for your back pocket. I recommend pairing it with a large beard, some flannel and a Fleet Foxes album. Prices range anywhere from $8 to $LOL so there's something for every budget and trust fund. read more

Based upon some pre-opening buzz I'd read in New York magazine and Tasting Table, I was expecting the space to be bigger. Regardless of size, however, Brooklyn Wine Exchange is chock full of good stuff. They have an extensive selection of New York state wines, including the Herman Weimar Riesling. I was also impressed by the large, centrally located $12 and under table, on which I found a highly quaffable New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. They have other limited time specials here, including an Alsatian Pinot Blanc for $12, which was just as good as bottles I've had at higher price points elsewhere. Customer service was also very knowledgeable. We might not have the Trader Joe's wine shop here in Brooklyn, but with Brooklyn Wine Exchange, we have something far superior. read more

Decent selection, and there are helpful little signs with information about the wines. Service and courtesy, however, leave much to be desired. I shopped here on a holiday Sunday afternoon when the store was empty and the staff were restocking shelves. None of the staff offered to help me select a wine, so I set down two heavy Trader Joe's bags off to the side of the empty store, and walked around reading the notes for ten minutes looking for a wine. But just as I was selecting a bottle, a staff member passive-aggressively told me she was moving my bags "so that they're not directly in the middle of the aisle." I told her I was happy to move them out of her way, but she was on a roll, and moved them anyhow. Next time just ask politely. I put the bottle back and left. I won't be "in the way" at the Brooklyn Wine Exchange again, and you might reconsider shopping here if you too are carrying groceries after shopping at Trader Joe's next door. read more

Beyond being a beautiful shop with a warm atmosphere (seriously, I love the decor and vibe inside this place), this purveyor of wines and liquors scores big in my book for two main reasons: (1) Staff is very friendly and helpful. Sadly these traits have been lacking in staff I've experienced in other wine shops, particularly in my Brooklyn neighborhood. But here, people always want to assist and are smiling (!) (2) Prices are clearly displayed. This matters! While region and food pairing recommendations are good to know, personally, price is always a huge factor in my wine shopping. Oftentimes stores won't have bottles marked with cost which I find toilsome while shopping. BWE also has a special (sale!) recommendations table, which is where I tend to grab most of my selections. They make it so easy! Oftentimes they have tastings which yield a lively atmosphere inside. Overall, a quality shop that I recommend you visit. read more

Adorable and charming shop with a great and diverse selection. I stopped in here to pick a couple of bottles of wine as a thank you gift, and this was a great spot. Many domestic wines, and a international selection as well. Coming from California, I have a good amount of knowledge of the vineyards from the Golden State, so it was good to see they were represented here. The staff was extremely helpful and cordial. Small talk was not forced, but overall just enjoying. They have a middle table with some reasonably priced wines under $12. This is a gem in Cobble Hill, and would make this my go to wine place if I lived in the area. read more
