I came in to buy some rum. The store owner said the one I wanted wasn't on the shelf. If I promised to buy it, he would run downstairs to grab it for me. I said ok. Then I said something to the effect of "even if I didn't buy it, it would be ok because it should be on the shelf anyway". I didn't mean to be condescending. It's common sense because eventually someone is going to want to buy that rum, in which case it will need to be brought up from downstairs or wherever it is stored. It's always a fun trip to Free Range, a cute little shop with a well curated selection. Free Range carries one of my favorite sparkling wines, a rose lambrusco by Labrusca. Such a tasty bottle for just $17. All the prices here are really reasonable. They also carry different spirits from small distributors. They have a few great mezcals, gins (a pink peppercorn I'm eager to try) and basically anything you'd need for almost any cocktail. If you're looking for SKYY vodka.. this is not your spot. I often come with my dog, and he's always welcomed and greeted. I also subscribe to Free Range's email newsletter, and I enjoy Jack's (the owner) opinionated messaging. Very neighborhoody. Your magnetic charisma can be a little intimidating for everyone around you, but lucky for them, you're really humble about everything and you don't mind hanging out with inferior people. You're not fancy, and you like your booze just fine. Well, you've probably also been thinking about how wine in a box has become too highbrow for its own good lately. Thankfully, Free Range is now stocking wine in a can. Just for you and me. Overall, Free Range actually does feel like a liquor store that's here just for me. It opened up around the corner from my apartment, it's owned by the nicest of guys, and they've got just about everything I want in the realm of booze.* The selection isn't massive (mostly because the place isn't very large), but it's focused, high quality, and the prices aren't bad at all. Best of all, Jack and Michael know what they are talking about. It's pretty obvious that they have tasted everything in their shop, and they are ready and willing to make excellent recommendations. If you don't know what you want, they are both very approachable, and very knowledgable. Do you need to know what to bring to a party? Do you need to know what to pair with shortribs? Do you need to know what to give your mom for her birthday? If you asked me, the answer to all of these questions would be wine in a can. But if you ask Jack and Michael, they will have an actual, good answer for you. They know their wine; they know their whiskey; they know their booze. And they have regular tastings, so go check them out. In all seriousness too, the wine in a can was actually quite good. Hiya. Just wanted to say that this shop deserves ten stars. Great selection, conveniently located, and is doing everything in their power to protect their staff and customers during a pandemic. I am hugely appreciative of the rules Free Range has put into place. It's a tiny shop, so going in you're already putting yourself (and more importantly their employees) at an increased risk. While many shops in the area don't even actively enforce the mask mandate, the additional rules in place here are of great comfort to those of us who are actually trying to NOT get Covid. Additionally, the prices are great, the weekly emails are hilarious, they have convenient online ordering, and they're a two minute walk from my house. Win, win, win, win. read more

Nice small liquor store. The staff was friendly and helpful. Not too big of a selection but we were able to sample the spirit we purchased.

You'll see multiple complaints about the owner of this store being rude, pretentious, and representative of the "entitled old white male" trope. I used to be able to look past it for the convenience of the store location, but after seeing how the owner treated a young woman the other day I've concluded that I can no longer in good faith support his business. The young woman popped into the shop to quickly grab a bottle of wine out of the fridge. Signs on the fridge directly say to shop for wines along the wall instead of browsing in front of the fridge. If asked why, the owner will say that it's because he doesn't want the front door to be blocked, when in reality, I saw him on a different occasion (before the signs were added) angrily scold an old man for having the door open for a few seconds too long, shouting at him, "Do you know how much money that costs?! You're wasting cold air!" He asked the woman if she needed help, even though he was clearly actually just annoyed that she wasn't doing what he (and the signs) wanted her to do. She said no thanks and explained that she was just about to grab one and that there was no need to shop along the wall just to come right back to do exactly what she was about to - aka grab a cold wine from the fridge and be on her way. He was furious - not at her wasting money or blocking the door, as she was doing neither - but at him not getting his way. Fuming at her logic being right and him not being able to do anything about it. He made a few rude remarks at her loud enough for the store to hear. She remained poised and unthreatened, and simply asked him why he was treating her so rudely. He scoffed and headed downstairs. Ha! As an older woman, I was proud to see this young woman recognize the type of man she was dealing with and stay the course. She took the thirty seconds it took for her to pick a wine, opened the fridge, grabbed it, and was on her way. This man's whole personality screams angry, lonely, and angry because he's lonely. Spare yourself an interaction with him and shop somewhere else - the wine selection isn't even that great! read more

We've been going to Free Range since they opened and have never had a bad experience. Selection is very good, prices are very fair, and they REALLY know their stuff. I have never felt pressured to get something more expensive and every recommendation has been spot-on. I think Jack, the owner, would break out in hives if he carried anything he wasn't sure was good so I don't even attempt to do my own research now. I just tell them what we're cooking/serving/mixing and our price range, then I buy whatever they recommend and I'm always happy. They have very good COVID protocols in place to prevent overcrowding and they rigorously enforce masks so we have felt very comfortable shopping there throughout this year. I walked in here 15 minutes after leaving a wine shop that was overpriced, rude and pretentious. I needed a decent bottle of Merlot and literally only 3 tablespoons of Brandy for a recipe. Everyone was so helpful, friendly and not condescending about my minuscule Brandy request, in fact they gave me directions to a place that had it. They also had wines in a variety of price ranges, which was a really nice surprise. I will definitely go back to this friendly neighborhood shop. read more

This place is miserable. There are so many rules. You feel like an inconvenience when you walk in the door. If you accidentally open the freezer door to look at the chilled roses or whites they snap at you to CLOSE THE DOOR and SHOP THE WINES ON THE WALL. If your friend calls you while you're browsing to tell you what kind of wine they want you to pick up they snap at you to GET OFF YOUR PHONE because NO ONE may talk on their cell phone. This is by far one of my favorite places to go when I need any kind of liquor or wine. I live pretty far from this place but it's always worth my time to travel out of my way to Free Range. The staff is always super nice and the owner is extremely knowledgeable about most, if not everything that they carry... but especially the bourbon - they even do their own whiskey store picks, which are home runs. I was hesitant to write this because I usually believe that negative reviews online are based on just one bad experience but.. after a couple of days of thinking I think I have to share this most BIZARRE trip to a wine store. I've never experienced such uniquely awful customer service. I am not sure his name but he had a pony tail. Once I entered the store I was just starred at not welcomed or anything, (being a women, ladies we know this is normal and uncomfortable to begin with) but it gets better... While I was checking around the man with the pony tail was being so mean to another customer in the store. I had tried asking for help and was ignored TWICE (lol) so he can continue being rude to the other customers... Obviously such a weird and uncomfortable experience. But then he started getting really aggressive like moving closer to them as if to push or fight.. I am not sure why anyone would employe this man but I will definitely not be coming by again as there are MAAANY other great wine shop options in the area that do not offer misogynistic and scary aggressive staff. It was one of those moments you wanted to video tape to show for proof but I was honestly too scared of him coming in my face next so I left. He seems like one of those people that enjoys bullying others. You would think with everything going on in the world you wouldn't still see people treating others this way.... Tip for management, get that guy out of there or at least some type of help because he's actually scaring customers away. Also by the looks of it -doesn't seem like he takes negative reviews lightly... can't wait for him to deny this one or spin it around. We were visiting Manhattan and I always check out the whisky selections while traveling to see if I can pick up something that is not available back home in Hawaii. Unfortunately while I found a few great bottles in several Manhattan shops, the prices were so inflated that I was afraid I'd end this trip empty handed returning home without any bottle finds. Luckily we spent a day exploring Brooklyn after doing the touristy trek across the bridge. I was very happy to find Free Range Wine & Spirits where I encountered Jack who is very knowledgeable about his Whisky. After chatting for a bit and finding out what gems he had, I was able to grab a couple of bourbons that I never see back home at very respectable prices. While I sadly will probably never be back this way I'd like to vouch for Free Range Wine & Spirits as a great shop with fair prices and knowledgeable people who have a passion for their business. read more

My new favorite place to buy wine! I used to frequent the prior wine store, Donna Da Vine, mostly as it was conveniently located, however, over the years, the selection of wine slowly dwindled to the point of almost nonexistent which is partly the reason it had taken me two months to visit the new place, but I'm so glad I finally did! After some grocery shopping/errand running/an intense gym session, I decided I no longer had the energy to make dinner so after grabbing some Sottacasa to go, my fiancé and I stopped in here on our way home. They have a great selection of wine(mostly under $30) and have a great variety for the size of the store(you can likely find something for everyone here) and some local liquors(can't say much about the liquor as I had eyes only for wine on my visit). I'm a red girl, but it was such a hot day, I wanted something refreshing and had no idea what to select. The guy that was working, maybe the owner?, was so knowledgable and helpful. He recommended a few different wines and then whipped out some glasses and gave us a sampling to help us narrow down our decision. While in the store, 4 other patrons had walked in and I was amazed at the way he was able to give everyone personal attention and clearly knew the wines inside and out. Highly recommend! read more

Love this little place. Came in to buy some liquor as a gift, and the helpful clerk guided to me a good section based on my budget. He recommended 2-3 different bottles and then stepped back to let me consider them without him hovering. I selected the one I want, and he went to the back to get me a fresh bottle. They have a great selection and I particularly like that they carry liquor from Brooklyn based distilleries. The people who work there, especially the owner, are very attentive and knowledgable. This is a fantastic wine and liquor shop. For you single malt fans, I'll just tell you that I've been able to pick up Daftmill, both the winter and summer versions, with NO price gouging. Can you imagine? Very knowledgeable staff who take your health and theirs very seriously. This is not the time to be aimlessly browsing, touching every bottle with an ungloved hand and exposing the staff to your presence for more minutes than necessary. Hence the rule about no cell phone usage inside. Is it really so hard not to do this? Aren't we all adults? Shop rules are prominently posted on the door. Just follow the rules and you will be rewarded. Ignore them, and don't be surprised if you're treated with the same disregard that you're displaying. Stumbled on this wine store on my way to a friends dinner and was in need of a bottle. When you walk in , you immediately know this ain't your corner liquor store. Just the way the store is set up, you know their not kidding around. (Most wine stores are so jam packed , I'm terrified I'm going to break a bottle just walking up and down the aisles). This place was more like a wine boutique. In a non pretentious way. It has a nice open space comfortable enough to browse around and take your time. I was impressed with the authentic collection. It's not huge but a good mix of whites and reds. I didn't recognize any of the names ( no cheap Cali chards here). I actually did end up buying a Chardonnay I had never tried, but had no doubt it would be good as this place obviously knows it's wine. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and friendly and gave me quite an education on whiskey ( looking for a gift), but so not in a pushy way.
