Used to pass by all the time whenever I wandered Vanderbilt. Placed an order on Uber Eats because I had a coupon expiring and their selection/pricing was top notch. Got a giant bottle of Western Son vodka and Dorothy Parker gin for a pretty good price. Surprisingly, the driver actually ID'd me and scanned mine with his phone. Words cannot even express how much I love the Wine Exchange. Quite possibly because I am a wino? Most certainly, but the total experience at the Wine Exchange is always pleasurable. The store is commodious and well organized. There are always some nice wines at loss leader prices that are well above Mad Dog 20/20 quality. There is no minimum credit card either. Prices are extremely reasonable as well. My favorite part about this establishment is the employees. One time I bought a bottle of wine that I could not open. I used to live two storefronts down from WE and I brought the wine bottle back, explaining that I was having issues with the cork. The employee did not make me feel incompetent at all. He opened the bottle for me, and even gave me a few tricks as to open trickier bottles. I have since impressed my friends. I was there this Saturday night minutes before closing. The employees insisted that I try every wine from the afternoon's featured tasting. They were trying them with me. Is it classy to get shitfaced with your local wine retailers? Probably not, but it sure was fun. read more

Come here with a vague idea of what you're looking for and one of these guys will help you find something. PLUS, there is a rumor that there are plans in the works to turn the back storage space into a temperature controlled room for specific beverages and tastings. The rare wine and spirits/liquor store that is indeed both. A selection of everything from absinthe to sake to single malts, and everything in between. The wine selection is ample and can be supplemented if you just ask. This is a real find not just for this Prospect Heightser, but for anyone in Brooklyn. The fifth star is for customer service that gives you space when you are looking around. When you ask for help (or look at them with I-need-help eyes), they will even look something up for you and order it if it is not on the shelves. Just the rare mix of people who want to help and know how. I have never had a more friendly interaction in a wine or liquor store. I bought a 'thank you' gift here, and they printed me a card, gave me a marker to write a few words, wrapped and packaged the bottles individually, and asked how else they could help. Oh, and they deliver locally if you need something fast. Five stars for the perfect place to indulge when you have some reward-yourself money or when you want to give a gift of any sort. read more

15 minutes late to a dinner party, and 10 minutes away from our destination. Those dang trains. Haul ass from Atlantic Ave. and on a darkened block spot the warm glow of these clean bright windows full of wine. We pop inside, cold, out of breath, panicked, a couple of perpetual punctual people who are oddly off their game and just need a nice bottle of red. Oh and can it go with Moussaka? Oh and can it be less then $13? Why yes, here's a bottle. A nice Rioja. $14.10 with tax, is that OK? The whole transaction took maybe one minute, and the cashier waves away my quarter, "don't worry about the change." Why thank you, did we look worried enough already perhaps? Not a problem, hurry down the street. Enter. Sit. Open. Let that sucker breathe a bit, and it was good and warm and made me happy. Red wine in winter time, what could be finer? We relax. read more

Probably my 2nd favorite wine/spirits store in this neighborhood after the Liquor Warehouse on Bergen. Because let's face it, that's Mecca. But this is substantially cheaper than the Fermented Grapes and slightly less snoooty than the Winey Neighbor and WITH MORE OPTIONS! I love options. I love having that moment of indecisiveness over not having a clue what to get. Story of my life. Also, one time I came in and tried a wine tasting of delicious German white wines and that made me happy. OH! There also was a tiny little puppy in here that I initially thought was a kitty! The 'wine guy' thought that Extra Dry champagne was more dry than Brut. No, brut champagne is the most dry. Embarrassing to argue so adamantly with your customers about wine (aka your profession, not mine) and be wrong about it. One of the unfortunate parts of living in a quickly gentrifying neighborhood like Prospect Heights is that the quality of the wine stores doesn't catch up with all the incoming people. For those who live off Vanderbilt Avenue, Wine Exchange has a lot of varietal and geographic selection, but the selection is not good at all. Sure there's an occasional Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc, Freeman's Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon, Ferrari-Carrano Chardonnay, or Goat to Roam Shiraz, but there's a lot of bad, low-tier product like Kendall-Jackson, Clos du Bois, and Ravenswood floating on the shelves. Buying an Old World wine here for a special occasion is most likely out of the question; the selection from Spain, France, Italy, and Germany is limited and storage conditions for those wines highly suspect. Additionally, I simply refuse to buy wine from a store where the empoyees store McDonald's fruit parfaits in the deep corners of their refrigerated wine section. At best, Wine Exchange is a solid, high-volume liquor store, with the requisite brands of vodka, gin, tequila, cognac, and scotch whisky well represented. I was pretty impressed by the selection of Caol Ila single malt scotches. Besides that , I would suggest going to Fermented Wines nearby. read more

I've never left here unhappy. I have always had excellent service, am so pleased not only the selection, but also the *suggestions* by the staff. Every time someone has recommended a bottle to me I've loved it. Right on the money. Speaking of money, the prices are great, there's a quite a range but typically I'd say about $2-3 cheaper than I'm used to paying per bottle. The service is spectacular, I sometimes stop in on my dog walks and they have treats behind the counter for my dog. Really cool staff, awesome shop. Hope they stay around for a while. read more

I've patronized many wine stores all over the city and none of them come close to the service and low prices that The Wine Exchange can offer. It's a family run business who are genuinely concerned that you walk out of there a happy customer and with what you came there to get. UNLIKE places such as Astor Wines whose staff up-sell every opportunity they can and pressure you into making purchases you don't necessarily want, the folks at Wine Exchange are extremely friendly, create an unpretentious environment, and give you all the help you need. Their selection is plentiful you can find a lot of gems in there. I recently purchased a few cases for a party I'm hosting and the owner gave me an amazing deal. Also, not to mention they offer a 20% mixed case discount, which tops most stores in the city. read more

I've lived in this neighborhood for four years and only walked in to this store two months ago- I think I found MY WINE STORE. I'll never shop in other wine stores ever again. No kidding. The manager Mozel, who is my new favorite wine buddy now, is super friendly and knowdgeable about their products. He is very honest, meaning if he doesn't know enough about a particular bottle that I'm curious about, he will do his homework and tell me more about it next time I walk in. It also means I can comfortably tell him "I don't need a $50 bottle for tonight. Find me something cheaper". That's real service, which in my opinion is more valuable than any bottle of wine in the store. Needless to say, they offer a good selection of wine- from cheap good wine for your daily consumption to fancy bottles that you want to buy a case and save them for truly special occasions- they have it all. In addition, they have really good selection of liquor from around the world as well. Enough said. Shop here if you can :) I'm about to pop open a nice bottle of Pinot Noir now! read more

I actually walked past Fermented Grapes since the Wine Exchange's hours listed on Google were from 11:00am to 10:00pm, although the sign on the door read "Open at 12:00". No matter, it was about 11:50 and I decided to wait. While I waited, at least three other potential customers looked inside and walked away. At 12:10 I called to check if there was a message announcing if the store was opening later or remaining closed. There was no voice mail; the phone rang and rang. So I joined the parade to Fermented Grapes and was treated very well. First day of Passover and the beginning of Easter Week - bad time for a wine shop not to be open. Awesome spot. Has undergone new management in the past few months and the place has done a total 180! Martin, who runs the place, is extremely knowledgeable and has excellent prices on mid-grade to top-tier whiskies (the bourbon and scotch selection here is nuts!). Seriously though, this guy competes with Astor on spirits prices. Has hard to find stuff in a cool, but not overly pretentious atmosphere. Wine Exchange is a must visit for the whiskey enthusiast. The wine selection is strong but I come mostly for the spirits. Check them out, the review you see about them not opening on time was before Martin took over and the other reviewer must have caught them on an off day.
