I've found that their prices are a couple bucks cheaper than the other stores in the area, and I've never had to return a recommended wine. I love this place! read more

With the only wine store within relative walking distance from my apartment being the shabby and upturned-nose-worthy Carroll Gardens Wines & Liquor, who's top seller is probably Yellow Tail, I was eager to find out what this new establishment on Court Street was going to offer. When I went there it was just after they had opened. I don't think I'm their target customer, though I might be their ideal customer--live nearby, have a wine fridge, and spend too much money on alcohol. My inclination is that their target market is the single-bottle buyer, on the way to a party, or for a specific meal. Those who buy in cases will probably stick to Heights Chateau or something or a higher caliber. This does not mean that you cannot find good wine here. I think their selection was fair, and their prices good. Coincidentally enough, they carry my girlfriend's cousin's wine, which we picked up a couple bottles of. (MAN pinotage--don't get it. But, his Conde and Stark wines are awesome, and worth tracking down or getting if you see on a menu.) The woman I dealt with didn't know anything about recommending wine, or the producers they carried, and being the only employee there, shone very poorly on the place. Newly opened, attracting business? Get someone who knows their shit there who can give the place an air of esteem. This supported my inclination that their target market was the casual drinker, not the serious wine enthusiast. All in all, I'll be back, and will make an effort to support this local establishment. This place is perfect for a wine drinker of my level (that is, I drink it. I don't judge it. I don't know enough about it). They have cheap bottles AND nice bottles, organic/biodynamic bottles AND standard bottles, domestic and foreign, white and red.... AND SAKE. The staff are helpful and friendly. I really like the selection and presentation of the wines here. Most are between $10 and $20. I haven't ever gotten a bad bottle. Each wine has a short description about the taste, where it is from and what it goes best with food-wise. They do not have hundreds of different wines like some stores but I actually prefer a smaller selection since it makes it easier to decide. I haven't spoken to the staff about the wine so I can't comment on that. I usually know what I'm in the mood for before I walk in the door. I also wish they had one or two cheap wines (under $8) but in general I'm a big fan. read more

Good wines, but the most important thing is finding someone who can help you find something great. And the women are really helpful, but the guy is useless. I asked about a wine, took it home, gagged, and then decided to take it back. When I went to the counter with three other bottles to buy and complained about the wine his response was basically "caveat emptor". So to lose a customer over an 11.95 bottle of wine seems crazy. So my recommendation is Drydock on van Brundt or Scottos a few blocks up. read more

Selection: Pretty decent and varied selection if a bit generic, not very inspired but if you've graduated from drinking yellowtail and coppola from the only other wine shop in the area on court, Fat Cat is serviceable. Some decent importers on their shelves, Jorge Ordonez, Polaner and Neal Rosenthal though you'd be hard pressed to find a real gem here. Price: They are consistently above retail. A $12-$13 bottle elsewhere will be $18-$20. The price you pay for being the only shop in the area. Service: I haven't asked for it but I've never been offered a "may I help you find you something" from anyone here. They have offered me a chilled bottle of white if I buy it which is nice. Otherwise they're hands-off bordering on aloof. Overall: In a pinch if you need something drinkable this place is good and I know I'll be back again and again regardless of their high markups. I'll admit this place didn't make a great first impression, but it has definitely grown in my estimation. Decent prices and some very tasty wines go a long way with me. Initially I felt that the selection was too small; however, I now feel like they describe their wines well enough that I can always find what I'm looking for, even if I didn't know anything about the wine. As for the staff, I can't say much since I haven't ever asked for help. I can say that the two people I've spoken with there were very nice and professional. They also do free delivery and a 10% discount on mixed cases which is ideal for me since i don't live that close and like to keep my wine rack stocked. i have wanted to visit this place since the first day I moved into this neighborhood, yet it was not until after a month later that i was able to come back during its business hours. wanted to get some whites for my friends who are coming over for dinner - they are difficult to please coz they like white wines, yet they like it sweet and fruity - i do not even know what that tastes like. i personally hate sugary sweetness in wines and that just never occurred to me in the wines i have tasted in the past one year. as a newbie in white, i came into this store and asked the lady Miki (hope i spelled her name correctly) for help. she struck me with her patience and professionalism and most importantly friendliness and humour - we had a very nice convo for almost an hour. towards the end, i realized that I have been treated like a friend rather than a customer in a way I guess. she has been patient to describe all her favorites in her collection - the ones that she will drink EVERYDAY, the ones she will use to treat her guests, the ones that are INTERESTING. and it is as if she does not even care about what she can sell in the end - but then i realized that i have been fascinated to try all the wines that she describes - now I realized i fell into a trap. what they taught us in b school is all crap, however much marketing books I read, you need to learn and practice in real life. well... I brought back one Miki founds interesting, one she can drink every day and one that usually makes me sleep well. voila!!! read more

But the way the wines are organized and the helpful descriptions for each wine made it easy to choose. And the wines aren't even that expensive. Just stopped in to grab a bottle while staying with friends in the neighborhood. This shop has a really good selection of affordable wine from around the world. I got three bottles. $8-$11 each. The first one I've opened tastes great. I couldn't really ask for more from a neighborhood wine store. Great selection and great price points, for me at least. read more

I bought a bottle of Pinot Noir there to bring to my grandson's Thanksgiving dinner because his lovely wife Annette loves Pinot Noir. The lady behind the counter was very helpful and selected a nice vintage for me. I usually only have a glass of sherry so I don't know about that kind of wine but Anette said she really loved it. read more

I actually like the selection of wines here, but I had such a ridiculously cheap experience with one of the employees (I think the owner) that I'll take my business elsewhere from now on. I had just come from working out in Red Hook Park and politely told her that I just had 15 bucks on me, but was wondering if she could recommend a shiraz for that amount. She showed me two and I went with her recommendation. When she rung me up it came to $15.24 at which point she got awkward. I told her I could pay a quarter the next time I come in. Since I'm in here at least twice a week I assumed she would say yes. She then asked if I wanted to just get the other one which was a dollar cheaper! I was so stunned since i come here often. Whatever happened to old-fashioned customer service and neighborly benefit of the doubt? Losing a customer over a quarter is complete inanity. In the scheme of things, though, it's not a life-changing event. Thankfully there are many other wine shops in Carroll Gardens to support. read more
