I'm not a whiskey drinker, but when I first went to Louisville in 2021, I discovered a bourbon that…read moreI actually liked (in small quantities): Blade and Bow by Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Unfortunately you cannot get it in Canada, so when we went to the US in the summer of 2022, I was determined to purchase a couple of bottles. We didn't have any luck in DC or Baltimore, but I figured surely it would be available in New York, and every time I saw a liquor store I'd go in, but I couldn't find it anywhere. However, while in Brooklyn we came across Brooklyn Wine Co so we went in and to our surprise, they sold Blade and Bow! And at $49.95, it was cheaper than at the distillery in Louisville ($63)! So when my husband and I went back to New York over Christmas, going back to Brooklyn Wine Co, even though it was out of our way, was a priority. Because we had only a limited number of days we could venture into Brooklyn (we couldn't go to Brooklyn on days we had a show booked, for example) and I didn't want to turn up and they were out of stock, I contacted them ahead of time asking if there was a chance they would run out of stock, and if so, offered to pre-pay. The owner responded saying that they regularly stock Blade and Bow, but if they were running low, they would put some aside for me, and no need to pre-pay. When we arrived on December 28th, they had plenty of Blade and Bow in stock, but due to the ridiculous custom rules, we could only purchase three bottles. In addition to being one of the few liquor stores that stocks Blade and Bow, the customer service was great. One of the employees offered to go into the stock room to see if he could find a bottle with a specific number that we needed to complete our collection. (There are little plastic keys hanging from the bottles, numbered one to five, and if you get all five and go back to the distillery, you get a golden cup.) Unfortunately we couldn't get the number we needed to complete the set (#5), but the employee was able to help us find another that we needed. Even though we went to Brooklyn Wine Co for a specific product, they have a great selection of wines and spirits, and I will definitely go back if I am ever in New York. The staff is always helpful, and will ask questions to narrow choices and make selections. The store itself feels homey but not crowded -- Quite digestible without feeling overwhelming. It has the feeling of a small town liquor store run by people who really know their wine and whiskey (they also seem to know their tequila, rye, and bourbon, but that was not very alliterative). I always make sure to stop in whenever I'm visiting my brother and his family, I always find a great bottle to bring as a gift (often buy something else for myself that I haven't seen in other places).

Pretty good selection, including one of my favorites Christina. Also a very good whiskey and amaro selection. They won't have everything, but they'll have a good showing of every type, at least. Picked up a bottle of Fort Hamilton Rye. All reasonably priced. I will say to remember to bring a bag, because their paper bags are kind of flimsy, and I spent the whole walk home worried I was going to drop my booze.

The breadth of varietals here is truly impressive. True to form, they have a small but interesting spirit selection as well. I bought an interesting gin that I had never heard f (Salcombe) that I'm enjoying quite a lot. I've walked by a couple of times where they were having tastings--sadly I was on the way to the gym and managed to be responsible and skipped, but this strikes me as a great place to try one and discovers new wine. In addition to offering tastings on weekends, you can sign up for a frequent buyer plan if you want--I think it is some kind of discount on purchases once you pass $300 spent. I will admit I was a bit peeved when I went to pay last time--I was approaching counter to pay--and I thought the person clearly saw me about to place stuff at register--as the only other customer in there asked a question. I had to wait at the register several minutes while he jumped out to assist/flirt with the customer. Then again, in his shoes, I may well have made the same call.

When I walked into the store a few hours later, I found two PM margaritas and a slew of espresso martinis on the shelf. "Yes, clearly, that's all we have," he said, as if it was impossible that they had more in the back or that polite customer service still exists. For years I've lived in the neighborhood and told myself I'd check out PLG but it always felt too far to walk for booze or wine. The wine tasting was on a Wednesday or Thursday night and I had work the next day. Oy! But I got off the couch and into the rain and went! On arrival I joined the rest of the group that had gathered. Tons of people from the neighborhood and I immediately turn on my charm and talk. I'm pretty good at it. Been working on it for years. Ha. Everyone received a paper of the wines we'd be tasting and a glass. There were much more to taste than I had expected. The order structured to compliment your palate. Soft sparkling bubbles, funky cloudy wine that tasted like a cider, robust fruity reds, dry and complex whites, a rose for good measure. Knowledge was shared by the host aka the wine expert.
