I've taken 2 wine classes (wine 101) and I'm already looking to take the Wine 202 class…read more This is my type of wine class because: - It's located near Midtown Manhattan - The instructor is really chill - You are given different games to play which helps you remember the different wines and information about them - There's a variety of wines - There is no spit bucket (so chances are you'll get lit) - It's an open space so you get to meet other wine lovers Both wine classes I've taken have been on Fridays because you do tend to get a wee bit tipsy testing all of the wines. I first learned of the class through Groupon so I suggest looking there first if you are interested in taking a class here but either way if you interested in learning how to differentiate between the age of wines, the percentage of wines and practice your sense of smell (to determine what's in the wine) this place is for you.

We took the WineO 101 class on a Friday night, and boy was it a good time. The teacher and owner of…read morethe company, Mark, was clearly very knowledgeable of his craft, and his love for what he does is apparent. Students of the class are allowed to enter the rooms 10 minutes before the start of the class. The emails they sent out before the class stated that the class starts promptly at the scheduled time. We started about 7 minutes after the scheduled time, which I actually didn't mind because it gave us a chance to talk to our new friends were seated with. We had the chance to listen to Mark talk about wines, taste 5 different wines along with 4 different cheeses and some cured meat, as well as ask Mark questions we had about wine. We also played a few games for a small prize (drawstring bag with the WineO Club logo on it). It was a really fun way to spend a Friday night. The reason for the 4-star review and not a 5 is because Mark spoke wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too fast. My whole group had trouble keeping up with the information he was sharing, and it was a little annoying because we were all there to learn about wines. The class was supposed to be 2 hours long, but start to finish, it was closer to 1.5 hours, so I'm not sure what the rush was. Definitely not a dealbreaker, and I would definitely go back for another class, but I sure do hope they slow it down next time.

They pick fun wines that have a story and still accessible (like not the stuff you need to fork over life savings for). 2. As good... if not better than the wines were the cheese and bread pairings. He's had experience cultivating wine graps in Hungary, France, and California, to name a few places. He was quite informative and helpful. On top of our dessert wine, we had full glasses of 10 different types of wine. The grape variety for the wines included Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, & Malbek. The wine regions included Oregon, California, Argentina, Italy, and France. The prices of the bottles and their Wine Spectator ratings aren't revealed until after the wines are tasted, as to not provide a bias. There are five rounds of wines pairings, accompanied by a type of cheese. The wine pairings are selected to distinguish the contrasting tastes (e.g. comparison of regions, comparison of vineyard processing, or comparison of grape varieties). The class was a great introduction, and has whetted my desire to learn more about wines. If taken individually, the class would have cost $90, but Squabbie purchased the $275 four class promo package (good for 2 years and splitable amongst friends). I HIGHLY recommend this package (http://www.nycwineclass.com/wine_classes.php#256). I delayed taking this for half a year, I can't believe I waited so long! I can't wait for my next class.

I'm not a whiskey drinker, but when I first went to Louisville in 2021, I discovered a bourbon that…read moreI actually liked (in small quantities): Blade and Bow by Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Unfortunately you cannot get it in Canada, so when we went to the US in the summer of 2022, I was determined to purchase a couple of bottles. We didn't have any luck in DC or Baltimore, but I figured surely it would be available in New York, and every time I saw a liquor store I'd go in, but I couldn't find it anywhere. However, while in Brooklyn we came across Brooklyn Wine Co so we went in and to our surprise, they sold Blade and Bow! And at $49.95, it was cheaper than at the distillery in Louisville ($63)! So when my husband and I went back to New York over Christmas, going back to Brooklyn Wine Co, even though it was out of our way, was a priority. Because we had only a limited number of days we could venture into Brooklyn (we couldn't go to Brooklyn on days we had a show booked, for example) and I didn't want to turn up and they were out of stock, I contacted them ahead of time asking if there was a chance they would run out of stock, and if so, offered to pre-pay. The owner responded saying that they regularly stock Blade and Bow, but if they were running low, they would put some aside for me, and no need to pre-pay. When we arrived on December 28th, they had plenty of Blade and Bow in stock, but due to the ridiculous custom rules, we could only purchase three bottles. In addition to being one of the few liquor stores that stocks Blade and Bow, the customer service was great. One of the employees offered to go into the stock room to see if he could find a bottle with a specific number that we needed to complete our collection. (There are little plastic keys hanging from the bottles, numbered one to five, and if you get all five and go back to the distillery, you get a golden cup.) Unfortunately we couldn't get the number we needed to complete the set (#5), but the employee was able to help us find another that we needed. Even though we went to Brooklyn Wine Co for a specific product, they have a great selection of wines and spirits, and I will definitely go back if I am ever in New York.
