I have studied Thai cooking from both folks from Thailand and a British Army brat who grew up all over southeast Asia. I have eaten larb for decades; I make a very good version myself. I like larb. My husband and I ordered delivery, as the restaurant is just around the corner. He ordered chicken fresh rolls, and we both ordered larb. His take on the fresh rolls? "Meh". And we both agreed we'd NEVER order from any Thai restaurant that makes larb...sweet. Yes, sweet. Almost inedibly sweet. I had to doctor it with Thai fish sauce, lime juice and hot sauce to make it marginally palatable. I seriously can't trust that any of their other dishes will be either authentic or just edible. TLDR: Quite remarkably the ONE time I did not enjoy Thai food. Between the dry "Fish in Lava" or poor service, I'm not sure which was less appetizing for dinner. I almost cried scarfing down dinner. NOTE: A bowl of rice is NOT INCLUDED and extra charge (~$2-3) for curry! This may be different from your usual Thai Experience. Pros: Street parking wasn't too difficult. - - - - - - I happened to be craving Thai and in Sherman Oaks but learned that my go-to Now On 9 was closed, so I naturally went to Monster Thai, which not only nearby but a restaurant that I recently considered for a Party Tray. Monster Thai is a cozy, boasting about five tables, half of which were full on a Saturday night. Wanting something unique, I asked if there were any "specials" that made them stand out, though the hostess shared that it was only the Monster Menu... thus I decided to be adventurous with the Fish in Lava with Brown Rice - boy was I in for a surprise... Afterwards, I ordered a hot water as it was cold outside. The hot water came with a black speck inside the mug, but the mug was otherwise warm and enjoyable to hold. The Fish in Lava took about 20 minutes to prepare, and I was excited to try it when it came out despite its awkward appearance. Knife in hand, I attempted to shear away each layer of salmon - as I usually do - only to discover that it was tough. I grabbed for the fork next, working at it only to discover it was slightly overcooked, dry, and difficult to eat. To make matters more awkward, the hostess checked in, and I shared my concerns. She quickly rebutted, "But we've been serving it this way for 10 years." and walked away. No offers to substitute, not a single apology or lick of empathy. I don't like wasting food, so I kept cutting away, almost like a child playing with their food. (To be honest, how often do you see grown adults playing with their food? I'm so glad I was eating alone.) In attempts to "hydrate" the salmon with the curry, the salmon got cold, and the meal wasn't too enjoyable. Was this called "Fish in Lava" because it was overcooked and dry? Whatever the case, the leftover rice was left over was used to clean the curry remnants - oh yes, we waste nothing with rice (brown) being an additional $2.49 charge! In hopes of ordering a Thai Tea to improve the experience, I was astonished when the hostess threw the check on the table. It was an unpleasant gesture indeed, but the hint to leave may have saved me from another bad experience. read more

This is our favorite neighbor Thai spot. While we have dined in before, we prefer delivery or pick up. The inside of this place is tiny. Their soups are delicious. I love the sour tang of the Tom Yum Soup but we find ourselves ordering the Tom Kha Soup often as well. Both have very flavorful broths and are packed with veggies and a meat of your choice. Perfect for sick days or when winter starts to roll in. The Special BBQ Pork is a favorite of ours as well. Its grilled and served with a vibrant "special sauce." My new favorite Thai place! Monster Thai is located along a strip of other restaurant and stores. While the surrounding area is busy, there's ample parking along the street as well as the parking lot behind the restaurant. Came here for lunch with a large group of individuals. Due to the size of our party, we were worried the restaurant wouldn't be able to accommodate us but they did and they were more than happy to as well! It was still lunch time when we arrived so I ordered the chicken pad Thai and it's fried rice as well the Thai iced tea. I was worried that the portion size would be small due to it being a lunch special but there was so much food! Not only do you get the entree with rice, you are also given salad beforehand. Extremely Disappointed - Loyal Customer No More I've been ordering from Monster THAI in Sherman Oaks for years, but today's experience was the final straw. This place clearly no longer values its customers. First, I called the restaurant to place an order and was told they didn't have a delivery driver until 6 PM. Fine -- I decided to go through DoorDash instead. I placed my order, including a lunch special listed on their menu -- only to get a call from the restaurant saying they don't offer lunch specials on the weekend (something they should've made clear ahead of time). Then they just canceled my order. When I called back to sort things out, I spoke to a woman named Jane, and she was shockingly rude and nasty. Zero professionalism, zero empathy, and zero solutions. ‍ After years of being a loyal customer, I was treated with complete disrespect. I'm done. Don't support this business. I am a delivery driver and I picked up some food to deliver tonight at Monster Thai. It was raining and there are a few restaurants in that area. There was no parking on the street and other delivery people were parked illegally. I went around the block--which is no easy task in this area--and I had to do that a couple of times before a spot opened up. So, be aware that parking is not always easy here. The biggest challenge, however, was the attitude of the woman working as a cashier. She gave me the order to deliver. She was very rude to me, asking me to "confirm," which we MUST do as delivery drivers to a) get paid and b) deliver the order. I'm not sure what her issue was tonight, but she was very rude to me and yelled at me to "confirm," after I had already confirmed the order. She wanted me to show her with my phone that I had indeed confirmed. I've never been treated this way by someone at a restaurant in the year and one-half that I've been delivering. Ahh love the Thai food in Los Angeles but especially the small venue ones! This was amazing we had the bbq pork with their special sauce omg so delicious! Along with the chicken yellow curry with white rice! It was good but spicy and didn't know the level but was delicious the potatoes were firm yet soft which made it awesome! Fortunately, customer service was able to cancel my order and refund my money. The restaurant rushed my order and it was delicious. I got the larb with ground chicken, pork king with shrimp and pad see ew with vegetables, all mild. My rather picky 92-year-old mom loved everything and even wanted to keep the leftovers which is very unusual for her. The restaurant was very clean. There was street parking in front. Our favorite Thai place! It's a small hole in the wall place and there's either street parking or parking in the back (limited). I do wish there was outdoor eating (during this time) but there's literally no room. Our go to's are the yellow or red curry with shrimp, stirfried noodles with beef or tofu, and eggplant tofu. You cannot go wrong! For the noodle sauté, I sometimes ask for light sauce but there's really isn't that overpowering like you may get elsewhere. I highly recommend this place! read more

Was craving Thai with a friend and decided to finally try this place out! It definitely doesn't stand out when you drive on Riverside Dr as it is kind of a hole-in-the wall location. The prices are shockingly great and much cheaper than majority of the Thai restaurants so it made me skeptical at first. But I have to say, I wasn't disappointed and was pleasantly surprised. My friend and I got the fried tofu, spring rolls, and 2 pad kee maos (one with beef and one with tofu). Fried tofu- very generous portion and well fried, soft on the inside Spring rolls- comes w 4 and good crunch to it and delicious Pad kee mao- noodles were great, same portion as other Thai places but 2/3 the price. My only complaint is that the beef was tough and hard to chew- maybe try not to overcook the beef. One other thing was their phone line was not working so it was impossible to call in a pick up order. I had to order there and wait. Otherwise, great pricing and food. This is my time dining in for lunch. I've ordered via delivery numerous times, and this Thai restaurant has the best food on this side of the Valley. I ordered the Pad Thai with shrimp, but got chicken instead. I was too hungry to send it back. It was just as good. Thai iced tea was refreshing, and balanced out the spiciness of my chili-doused Pad Thai. The waitress hasn't checked back with me since serving my order. Love this place! It's my go-to Thai spot to order from. I've never eaten in the actual restaurant, but it's an intimate little place with music paraphernalia on the walls. Whether I'm picking up or ordering delivery, my food's already ready within 20-30 mins. My go-to entrees are the Green Curry (SO good) or the Pad See Ew (classic and tastes great with some sriracha), but my fave standout is their Curry Dumpling appetizer; the chicken dumplings are tasty on their own, but when they're covered in that creamy red curry sauce??
