We had a large red oak near the property line that needed taking out due to it dropping large limbs on the fence and other understory trees and plants. The job would definitely need a crane. We also had another large tree pruned and a smaller tree removed. We got 2 estimates and decided to go with Monster Tree Service. Mike the estimator was very professional and gave us a quote on the spot. We had to wait nearly 10 days to receive the other quote. We were fortunate that from the estimate to the tree removal was a couple of days. The crew arrived as scheduled and proceeded to take out the tree. We were hesitant to move so quickly because our asphalt driveway was less than a month old. The crew put down appropriate protection for the driveway and proceeded to do the job. The entire job was completed in one day. The driveway was unmarked and the areas cleaned of debris. You would hardly know that they were there except for the lawn sign. The larger logs were moved to the curb in the front yard and the next morning a log truck with crane proceeded to load the logs onto the truck for processing. I recently contracted with Monster Tree for the second time. I was pleasantly surprised that they have become even better in the service provided, the first job was good to excellent. This job was over the top, if I could give 10 stars it would not be enough! I presented them a very difficult problem, 3 Hemlocks and 2 Elms that were sandwiched in-between properties and fences. On top of that, the Elms had grown into the power and cable wires for 3 houses. And due to the layout, there was no way one of those bucket/crane trucks were getting in here. Out of 7 companies I called, only 3 quoted and Monster was the most informative of all. There was some delays in getting this work done, PECO had to shut the whole neighborhood down so scheduling was intense. Monster's office people stayed in touch and the owner actually gave me his personal cell number to make sure I could stay in the loop. You don't get that type of service usually. On the work day (yesterday) part of the crew showed up early, and they were very respectful of the time of day. No loud voices, no trucks running, no early chainsaws. Once the power was off, they climbed into my mess of trees and had at it. The half day job ended up taking all day, at no extra cost. And as to cleanup, I looked out the window to see an employee scooping all the leaves out of my fish pond. Perfect to the last detail!! I never, ever allow my name to be used by a company for reference. But in the case of Monster Tree, I'll offer myself as a completely satisfied customer. read more

They did work on my neighbor's property and just started dropping heavy branches on my property digging holes in my lawn and spreading leaves and branches all over my property without my permission. When I challenged them on this they totally ignored me. While they did clean up some of their mess they sure didn't leave my lawn the way the found it. I had to spend an hour pulling broken twigs out of the dirt that were sticking straight up and could have caused serious injury if you walked barefoot on the lawn. The dropped limbs also dented the dirt and created some ruts. There is no way I would pay these guys to work on my property. They didn't even clean up the property they were working on that well. read more

During the last big Nor'easter that rolled through here, our basement flooded and a tree begin leaning heavily toward our house. Several tree companies stopped by to give an estimate. Most of them pushed hard to remove the tree immediately and their prices started at $800. Max Burton from Monster Tree Service came by and was very different. He was sympathetic to our stress about the basement flooding. He suggested tying off the tree; that way the tree wouldn't fall but it would also be a less expensive, albeit temporary, option while we dealt with the more immediate crisis of the basement. Max's compassion and long view on our situation and relationship was the kind of thinking that defines customer service in my opinion. We have other tree work to do on the property and I look forward to working with Max and Monster Tree Service. read more

Since we had a good experience with Monster before, we decided to use them for a bigger job. Didn't even think to get other quotes. When they came to do the work (almost 3k worth) they accidentally cut down some azaleas that my husbands grandfather had planted on our property. We did not want these cut down, neither was it on the estimate. The man who had given us our quote, Tim, wasn't there that day, and when I wrote/called them to tell them the mistake, everyone, including the owner of the company, seemed to think it wasnt that big of a deal. (Which maybe money wise it wasn't, but it was the sentimental value.) When I told them they were cut in error, Tim said WE could PAY $100 to have azaleas put back in. (Why we would pay money for their error I will never know.) After talking to the owner on the phone (complaining I would not pay for something they did wrong), we ended up settling with them taking $100 off of our bill, but there was some deadwood they had never come to get that we had asked to be taken care of. The owner said he'd have Tim and take a look. In the mean time, we received the invoice that states you have to pay by the invoice date otherwise your coupons are forfeited. So I wrote to the owner because I had not heard about the deadwood yet and I didn't want to pay the invoice until we knew they were coming to take it down. When Tim did, he said he would give us a new estimate because the deadwood didn't fit the explanation on the estimate. (To which I replied, this deadwood was the second thing we pointed out that we wanted out and I didn't care if it fit the explanation on the quote because when Tim first came, he said he would write the quote in a way that the crew would know what to take care of). I wrote an email back saying I was going to write to the BBB because if they won't come out and finish the work we are going to be paying for, I will have them look into it and I would put the check in the mail unwillingly because I didn't want to miss out on our $400 coupons). Needless to say, they came out and finished the work, but it was like pulling teeth to get these guys to just do what they were suppose to do. We would not use or recommend Monster for big jobs, probably just a few hundred dollars worth of work that is fool proof and they can't mess up. read more

Sure, they honored a quote from 10 months prior, but 7 weeks after accepting our deposit we still had not heard from them (after being told within 5 weeks we'd hear from them). We called them to schedule our appointment. They cancelled the day of because of an issue with a crane. About a week later they came out. They changed how they were going to approach taking the tree down and removed some fencing to get to it. The tree work was great, the damage to the yard, not so much. That I understand is part of the job. But, they never reattached the fencing to the posts. The gate still doesn't work properly and after the third visit from their "handyman" the fence is finally stable. Just don't use the gate... Even after all of the mess we went through getting them out here in the first place, and then the multiple visits to keep our dog and young child in the yard, they sure weren't shy about letting us know they were still waiting on payment. I received the invoice three days before payment was due, and decided it was in my best interest not to pay them until my fence was at least standing. read more

We had one tree removed by Monster. Steer clear of Tom Robbins (arborist). We had a question before the work was completed and he said he would come out as a courtesy, he never showed. Plus he was extremely rude on the phone, speaking over me, raising his voice, and telling me I didn't know what he was talking about. The invoice says that damage to the yard is to be expected - but expect A LOT of damage with these guys. Plus they ground our stump but left sizable surface roots untouched. I would call them to come and fix it but I don't want them screwing up my lawn even more. The crew was excellent. They came out to take down a couple of trees on my property and some large neighbors' branches that hung over my property. They were very polite and professional. I had an irrational neighbor from up the block complaining about the truck parked on the street in front of his house. Beginning with all of your staff (Scott H., Mat, Max, Tim and even the billing staff). Everyone that I dealt with was just such a professional, kind, thoughtful and attentive person. Each were truly committed to providing me the utmost attention, I still cannot believe it. I have to say Max is such a knowledgable individual. He first listened to all of my concerns regarding the trees I thought were dead and/or on the verge of dying. We then walked the property talked about placing cables on trees for safety prevention, and he even expressed his concerns with some trees and made his recommendations on safety removal. Each were spot on! I have dealt with Scott Hillary quite a bit now and I always find him to be quite friendly professional and knowledgeable with billing questions, estimates, and his follow up to my experience before, during and after where just amazing. Mat and his crew came in as promised on time, even a bit early. It dumfounded me because of my experience working with other small tree businesses, landscapers, yardmen who generally came at their leisure or convenience. When Mat arrived we went over all the trees that Max and I had chosen to remove and after that it was all Mat - he just took right over. It was so simple that I really could not believe how safe, efficient, quick, professional, clean, oh wait did I mention CLEAN his whole entire group were. It was like clock work for them, everyone looked as they knew they had a job to complete, what their task was at all times, they cleaned up after each removal, checked to see if I was pleased often and even made sure of my safety. I wasn't even close by the crew however they would still check around and made sure I wasn't around and if I were they waited then continued. I would find myself wanting to check the process out because I find tree removal a work of art and the crew is very talented however they would catch me sneaking a peak and would ask to step back a bit. With every single tree that came down, I would just be floored on how clean, simple and efficient each man worked that I would send a note to friends bragging about your company. I have to say a special thank you to Scott, who asked Tim to follow my schedule on the stump removal. Because of that delay in the stump removal our party was so successful and the yard looked flawless. I had asked Scott to delay the removal because I thought that there might be a mess in the yard because of prior experience with stump removals from other companies. I have to tell you that when Tim finished I was kind of sad that I had waited. He left the area around each stump so clean, that the only reason you know there was a tree missing is because grass was missing. We have a very long drive way and he and his machine were so gentle on the asphalt that after the next rain, all evidence of a stump grinder was gone. Mr. Skolnick, I really appreciate the fact that I wasn't billed until the last step was complete and Scot had asked if I were completely satisfied with the work performed. I have to be honest I would have paid in advance after seeing them just take down the first tree. This just shows how committed you are to your customer and your company. Dealing with Monster has been the most frustrating and disappointing contractor experience I have ever had. It took FIVE visits (not counting the quote visit) to get the job done per the contract (one tree cut, another tree pruned), and they still left debris on my property, and damaged my landscaped slate stairs with no offer to make it right after I made numerous attempts to discuss. I asked to speak to a manager or owner multiple times and was only able to speak with the estimator/arborist Todd. They do not communicate whatsoever with their customers, they just send a crew out whenever the feel like it. They left logs from the cut tree (along with a 4 ft high stump that was promised to be "flush cut") on my property for 2 weeks before moving them to the street, then another week until the logs were picked up. I would never recommend them to anyone. read more

Monster, Max, Jenna, and the crew exceeded our expectations for the recent removal of a very large dead tree. The quoting process was so painless , Max was very reasonable on pricing and was able to undercut the competition on price. The service was done ahead of schedule! The scheduler Jenna was excellent , and kept us in the loop about when exactly to expect the crew. The crew did not destroy our lawn , didn't even disrupt a blade of grass, they picked up all of the limbs from the tree they removed had previously dropped. They went well above and removed a ton of brush from our tree line and all these leaves we'd be dumping there. They removed all the leaves from the area they worked on, not just blew them away. Stump grinding was done within a couple of days later and they ground it really fine and nicely. We needed to have some 25 year old arborvitaes removed close to the pool and Monster beat out 3 estimates by $100. Surprised that they managed to remove the 5 trees without a single leaf in the pool. They arrived within a week and the trees were gone in half an hour. They have the largest shredder I have ever seen, shredded the 30 foot trees in a single pass. Consider this your warning. Will never use Monster again. I was a repeat customer and recently had two tress+stumps removed. They came to remove the tress when the ground was saturated. This resulted in my lawn being destroyed in the area of the trees. They also drove on another part of my lawn where they had no business parking their trucks on. That also got ruined. Left a mess after cutting the trees down. My neighbors asked me who came to do this and why they didn't pick up the mess. After 2-3 weeks, the finally came to grind the stumps and clean up the mess after I complained. When the stumps were removed, they left the grindings. I was never given the option of removing the grindings when I received my quote. If I had known they would leave a 2-3 ft pile of wood and dirt, I would have gladly paid extra to remove this mess. I once again contacted monster and they offered to come back and get the grindings for $150 dollars!! After ruining my lawn, leaving a mess, and not offering grinding removal when giving the quote I was not going to give this company another dime. Never again Monster. Consider yourselves warned on using this company. read more

I saw them in the area and stopped to have them see about removing my tree. They couldn't come over that day, but Tim's company called and made an appointment for him to do the estimate. Tim was sorry that he couldn't help me but offered to contact a local tree service company he knew personally. He also gave me the person's cell number. And that's exactly what he did! Never heard of a company offering customer service like that and without my actually being a paying customer. He called that company and gave them my number! I had them out to my house and will have an estimate emailed to me. I got wonderful service from Tim at Monster Tree Service even though I was not their customer....just imagine what you would get if you are lucky enough to do business with them!! Beware of the "bait and switch" with the "we will beat any competitors written estimate by $100". When you present the quote, you will be told that the quote in not for the same level of services that Monster has quoted. They will then attempt to negotiate with you. Also, seems as though no matter when I request their services (Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall), the final price (with discounts) always seems to fall in the $1,100 - $1,200) range? We just had Monster Tree Service do a fairly large project at our house involving 10 trees including raising the canopies, cutting branches and removing major limbs. Shane (an arborist) gave us an estimate a few days before the project. He was thorough and very professional. The day of the project Chris and his team arrived, did a wonderful job per Shane's estimate, removed and shredded all cuttings and cleaned up our yard before they left. Several neighbors walked by, admired their work and made appointments of their own for similar work. This was our first time to use Monster Tree Service but it certainly won't be our last. read more

We had 2 very large trees taken down, with the surface roots and 2 stumps grinded out 2 years ago. The owner talked us into paying an extra $500.00 to have the lawn graded. The surface roots and removal of the wood/mulch was suposed to be included in the original price. I have a flat 1/4 acre. When the serivce was done and the dust and mess settled (after the full payment) and a day to walk thru it, we saw the amount of wood left and all of the surface roots that still remained. We contacted them immediately, they said they would send someone out soon. After 2 weeks of waiting and several phone calls to the owner, nobody from the company returned. I am still picking large wood chucks out of our yard and the grass wont grow well. The small pieces have finally started to break down from the hard wood trees. My children cant even be barefoot in our backyard to this day. We are not happy with the service that was supposed to be included in the original $6800.00. Then being scammed for another $500.00 to clean up and grade, when it wasnt even cleaned up to the standards it was suppose to have from the beginning. read more
