We were staying overnight in the Tempe Arizona area and were looking to try something different for lunch. We noticed this crowded chicken joint and figured the locals probably know best. My wife and I truly loved this chicken joint. In my opinion the popcorn chicken was meaty and as tasty as any chicken I have ever eaten. You have the option of choosing the level of heat on your chicken and I will say that you need to respect the heat and go one level below what you think you will like. You do not want it so hot that you cannot appreciate the chicken flavor. The atmosphere was upbeat with hip hop music. The drink selections had various flavors that could be added for something different. The restaurant was clean and we received great customer service. Was in the mood for some spicy chicken and stumbled upon this place. The chicken sandwich is pretty darn big. Ordered the medium space which definitely had a kick. Not a kick your face kick, but definitely warms you up. Comes with their special sauce, which was very flavorful. Definitely seems like a chicken with cooked to order. Very crispy not over cooked and very juicy middle. They are not afraid to use salt. Not saying it was overly salty but salt does help bring out the flavor and it did not need any. The fries were crisp and were sprinkled with a Nashville seasoning, which was the bomb. Not pictured where the chicken strips with my kids absolutely devoured. And they got theirs spicy like me. We all want to go back and kick it up a notch and try the hot. The collard greens were cooked perfectly. They use turkey to add flavor and not pork. Did not take away from the taste.. The service was quick.. it's like the second I ordered the food they threw it into the fryer and got it ready to go. The only downside was very loud music. I loved the throwback jams, which help me reminisce for the days of my youth. His chest that they had it so loud we couldn't talk at the table. First time having Nashville hot chicken. I think we were the first customers for the day. There were three people working. They at least greeted us. But No one explained that you order your food at a kiosk so we found that out on our own. Then we waited for the food. While waiting we overheard the lead ask if the slaw was a day old and the guy said yeah and he said it looked ok for being a day old. I was kinda surprised. Coleslaw gets soggy and you would think the expectation would be to make it daily. But it's one of those things like I would have rather not have known. Lol. I went with the Nashville sandwich and husband went with the tenders. Good thing I didn't order any fries with mine because his tenders box was loaded with fries! The fries were m favorite part. Super crispy and tasty with the seasonings and sauce. My sandwich was good. It wasn't very spicy for a medium so if I go back I would probably go to hot. Chicken I expected to be more crispy than it was. It was hot and cooked through. Sodas were some special organic type. They were different. Service could have been way better. Y'all should be ashamed thinking y'all could slide this into my box without me saying anything. And somehow my fries were hiding under the chicken and that speaks for itself. When I found we had a Monroe's Hot Chicken in Tempe I knew I had to head over and check them out! I am ready a fan of the downtown Phoenix location. The one on Tempe is in a newer shopping/living area right along Tempe Town Lake. I knew this time I had to try the What De Cluck Fried Chicken sandwich since Extra Hot wasn't that hot to me! The fried chicken sandwich comes with southern slaw, pickles and sauce on a toasted brioche bun and the chicken is fried perfectly. But man oh man did What De Cluck make me cry LOL I got the burn was wanting and then some haha. Honestly not sure why there are so many bad reviews about this place. I had a great experience! You order off a kiosk, which was one of my favorite parts. As a picky eater, I was able to remove items off from my sandwich without having to ramble it off to an employee! We ordered a regular chicken sandwich, a belgian waffle sandwich, fries, deep fried pickles, and an UNFORGETTABLE Stubborn Cream Soda. All of that was $45, which in my opinion was a great price for the amount of food we received and were unable to finish! Hands down the best deep fried pickles I've ever had. Fries were perfectly cooked and my expectations were exceeded with the chicken sandwiches. We waited maybe 10 minutes for our food and it came out FRESH. I personally would have waited longer if needed bc the food was worth it. Amazing food! But there's a catch! The level of customer service, detail to clean establishment just doesn't make my first visit pleasant. The iPad idea is cool, but when it's not a common thing in every restaurant, some type of heads of using it would be nice! When I arrived it was ready, but the guy behind the counter just basically threw the bag at me. When I asked for sauces like ketchup, he said, "just so you know, it's .50 each". Chicken tenders actually tasted good. Came with a lot of fries. Popcorn chicken southern style was dry and came with only a tiny side of Mac and cheese. We added an egg but it was nowhere to be found, I'm not sure if it's only a sandwich item but ultimately did not get what I paid for. Instead, he loved it. Ugh, MEN! :P Was the bok bok hot? Not hot enough for this lady but boy was that chicken CRISPY! I thought I was going to cause an earthquake in Chandler upon first bite! I think I saw the overhead ceiling fan quivering from the astounding crunch of the bird! My friend had told me that the owner of Lo-Lo's Chicken & Waffles also owns Monroe's but wowzah is the chicken much better here! Don't get me wrong, I love Love LOVE Lo-Lo's but the chicken at Monroe's stays crispy even with the addition of the hot sauce. At Extra Hot, one step below their hottest level of "What Da Cluck," I was expect for a chili pepper to jump out of the chicken, punch me in the throat, and slap me in the face while laughing at me as tears stream down my face. What I got was a slow burning kind of heat that left me smackin' my lips. I think I'm going for the What Da Cluck next time! Their chicken sandwich is served with a cooling cole slaw, pickles, and their kick-it-up-sauce on a brioche bun. The only good thing at this place is the soda... The sandwich is basic, the heat is not even close to any of the good hot chicken places in LA (Howlin rays, Dave's, Angry chicks, etc...) Fries are tasteless. The service is meh, people are nice but you have to pay for sauce, no honey! No ketchup on the tables! The portion of food is comparing to Howlin but not even close to quality, if you compare it to Dave's you get double the quantity of food for 1$ more ! Wow let me start by saying the food was delicious and worth all the hype this place gets! I got the chicken sandwich with the "hot" spice level and I thought it was the perfect amount of spicy. I think it went well with the cole slaw they put on top and the brioche bun! The fries were well seasoned and the mac n cheese was super tasty as well. The only negative things were that I felt like the wait was a little long, and not to sound like a grandma but I didn't feel like the music they had (super loud club music at 1 pm lol) fit the vibe. Especially considering some people are here with their kids or dogs. Other than that we had a good experience overall! It was inevitable Nashville chicken would make its way to AZ, let alone Tempe. Across the In-N-Out, Monroe's is certainly an upgrade for ASU food fare and might've fought with Raising Cane's as the chicken staple there. But the oiliness was as heavy-handed as the prices. Its certainly a newly built place, and great safety measures to have shielded the open kitchen area and have tablet orders when you arrive. The monitors are huge so you can see how far back you are. Only downside is while the tables are clean, there's no way in hell you're 6 feet apart at adjacent tables, and people didn't seem to care. Table's didn't seem cordoned off either, so I opted to get my stuff to-go. Weird to say that the best parts of the meal were the carbs. Whatever spices from the chicken they used on the crinkle fries was a good hint. And that super thin fresh waffle cone they use for the popcorn chicken was also on point. Here's where things get a little dicey. The meal in general was oily - I know you coat the chicken frying oil back onto your chicken as the entire point of Nashville hot chicken, but I've seen other places clean it up better. A lot of the chili color oil from our sandwiches and popcorn chicken seeped through the takeout containers and into the bag/napkins. At least the boxes were well labeled! And while the overall fry job on the chicken with the seasoning was there, the spice levels were completely out of whack. My hot chicken was the same level as our medium popcorn and my bro's mild chicken sandwich. Rather than getting more heat, I suspect the only difference I got was more oil... Maybe it's an off experience and they do better. But $12 for that inconsistent heat is a big ask, and the novelty of hot chicken has long passed. Hopefully can amend these impressions in a couple months on another go. read more

For the last couple years I've enjoyed visiting the Monroe's Hot Chicken location in Phoenix. Now a new location has opened in Tempe. Living in East Valley, the new location is a much shorter drive. The restaurant is a chicken shop that features hot spicy chicken in the tradition of Nashville hot chicken- dry spicy flavor added to deep fried chicken (not sauce based). The chicken is excellent and spiced to your request. The staff has many of the same team as from the original Phoenix location, so the food is consistent and flavorful. The space is laid out a bit more compact, but actually has more seating due to better spacing for patrons amid the Covid-19 environment we live in. This was my first time at this location . It was a total vibe loud music SUPER clean inside . The workers had food flying out and it's all cooked and fried up right in front of you . As soon as somebody was done eating they'd be cleaning the table ready for the next guests. I visited the Downtown Phoenix location two years ago during Phoenix Fan Fest. I ordered the tender and fries box with the "WhatDaCluck" heat level. It was good, but extremely spicy and could barely finish it. I wanted to give them another shot, but the location (and the price) made me put that plan on hold. Fast forward to the present, at their new Tempe location (much more convenient). I decided to try the fried chicken sandwich, but I played it safe and went for "Hot" instead. It was soooo good. So so so good! The chicken was moist inside and crispy outside. The heat level was just right. The bun was nice and buttery. Finally, the slaw and pickles added a cool and tangy flavor to the sandwich. The decor was very nice and the staff was very friendly and chill. The place was clean and the patio was nice as well. The only slight negative is the price. The sandwich alone is $12 before the taxes and tip. Any extras will push you to or over $20. Because of that, this will have to be an once-in-a-while treat. Finally visited this place!! So happy they opened up a location in Tempe off of Scottsdale Rd. Upon entry I was greeted, all staff were welcoming and quickly explained how to use the kiosk. The manager or maybe head chef even let us sample the Mac N' Cheese. The chicken sandwich was amazing deff spicy though. The fries could have been a little more seasoned. Perhaps it was a powerful fart or maybe they were having sewer issues, but the stink permeated the restaurant. Nevertheless, I persevered and ordered my meal, and I'm so glad I did. I got a fried chicken sandwich (medium heat) and a side of fries. First, the sammy - the piece of chicken was huge, juicy, moist, and crispy. It was spicy enough to sting my lips a bit, but not so spicy that it prevented me from enjoying this totally delicious sandwich. The slaw on top cooled it down just enough, and the beer I had helped, too. Next, the fries - now normally I would put crinkle cut fries at the bottom of the list when ranking fry types. I just think there are so many superior options. However, these fries break the mold of the traditionally-sub-par crinkle fry. They are super crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and seasoned with an addictive combination of spices. Not to mention, they give you a bucket of them (definitely plan to share with a friend or bring them home to reheat in an air fryer). 10/10 for value on these guys. I left full and satisfied!
