While it is on the higher end of things when it comes to price of yarn, staff is always friendly and helpful, as well as knowledgeable. The yarn that is sold here is high quality, so pricing is very understandable. Love that they offer one on one lessons to be scheduled for an affordable price. I primarily crochet, but I wanted to learn to knit. So one of the staff was able to get me started as well as provide additional resources for where to get more help after I left. read more

Visited for first time today and was blown away. Was traveling w my pup and they were gracious about letting me bring in (too hot for car). Beautiful beautiful selection of yarn, notions and goodies. There was a new knitters class going on and super patient teacher - looks like a great place to learn. They even offered to wind a skein so I could start knitting. Fabulous customer service. Amazing knitting store!! So much variety, a super friendly atmosphere, and lots of project samples and kits and notions. I also loved the big friendly dog sleeping under the table. :D The owners (?) were helpful and knowledgeable, and it was clear this is a spot you can come to find community as well as yarn. My only issue was that they don't wind sale yarn, which felt a little sad and elitist (maybe put a limit on skeins wound if that's an issue?) but overall I would highly recommend this LYS. read more

This was my first time going to Monarch Knitting, and it felt like entering a slice of heaven! The space is light, bright, welcoming, and of course joyously colorful with gorgeous yarn! Everyone working in the shop was welcoming and helpful, and patiently answered any questions I had. There was yarn and knitting/crocheting supplies at a wide range of price points. They also have a lovely workroom in the back where they host many classes and gatherings - which I hope to join soon! I can't believe that I just discovered this roomy and well stocked knitting store! The staff was very helpful and friendly. They helped me to find enough yarn for my project in their back room. Their newsletter is fabulous! and it alerts you to the occasional yarn sales. They also have online classes. They have good COVID protections and plenty of space so that there wasn't a wait when I visited. I can't wait to return and show off my sweater!! read more

I visited this store hoping to find wool to darn a sweater. I was unable to match my color, and didn't find a thin enough ply. I went to Michael's in Marina, and found embroidery thread that matched, for only a few dollars. By the way, they also have yarn for a fraction of the cost compared to the PG yarn store. read more

I drive to Monarch Knitting from Los Gatos because of the super helpful/knowledgeable sales staff, Connie always gets me out of a jam if I make a mistake, and they have a wonderful selection of high quality yarn and notions. Excellent store for beginners or advanced knitters I visited the area and decided to check out this store. I usually buy my yarn at Michael's or JoAnn and I didn't know what exactly I should expect at a dedicated yarn store. Wow, what a treat! The ladies there were very kind and knowledgeable, they helped me pick two skeins of yarn. I'll attempt to make simple scarfs from them - but as the yarns are so beautiful, even a simple pattern will show them off right. I loved walking around the store and checking out all the knitted items on display, they helped me see how a yarn works in real life and what it can do as a piece of garment or accessory. I'm looking forward to visiting this store again in the future. read more

Cute little shop! I came in not knowing what to expect. I'm a novice crocheter so going to a knitting store was a bit intimidating! When I walked in I was in yarn heaven! A great selection and many different styles, price points and sooo many beautiful colors. The ladies there were extremely helpful and kind. Some prices were a bit high but I understand why. This ain't your Joann's or Michael's yarn, this is extremely high quality, hand dyed yarn. I was ready and willing to pay the price for such beautiful yarn. When I was ready to check out the kind lady offered to spin the yarn I was purchasing into a ball for my convenience. I was a little confused at first when she asked as I had never been to a yarn store like this before so I agreed. I'm glad I did! I was only in town for a few days but I wish I could visit more often! I will more than likely be back if we are in the area again. read more

Cute little knitting/crochet store. There are two dogs, Snickers and Sakura who will greet you as you step inside. They are very friendly and love to visit with customers. Considering the status of the knitting community, this review is far overdue from me, an ethnic knitter. From the moment I stepped into Monarch Knitting about four years ago, I was welcomed warmly and treated kindly by all of the great, knowledgeable staff. Jana approached me and said, "Can I help you?" I was looking around the store in awe and could hardly speak. I said, "I'm sorry, I'm seeing yarns here that I've only seen in catalogs, and I feel like I'm seeing celebrities." Jana said, "Believe me--I know!" and she let me wander around the store and fondle the yarn. The ladies at Monarch know everything about wool. I bring in some obscure pattern and ask them what kind of yarn would be good to use on, for example, a blanket for my nephew. They always automatically have just the thing. I ask:"Oh--and--do you have that in SF Giants colors?" They say, "Yes, we do!" At Monarch Knitting, they always have what I am looking for! And they always say, "You're more than welcome to stay and knit." I have run into Monarch Knitting without warning the ladies, and I thrust a mess of a WIP that I have knit into absolute confusion into their hands and say, "Help?" Jana, Koryn, and Heather have all dropped what they were doing to help *clueless me* by tinking back my work, picking up stitches, giving me invaluable knitting tips, and setting me on the path to successfully completing projects! Even Anne, the owner, has given me a lesson on Continental knitting, even though she is insanely busy! The motto of Monarch Knitting is "Knit...and be happy!" Beautiful store. Lots of colors and types of yarn neatly organized by weight. I found them while visiting Monterey for a conference and bought enough that there was some question of what I would be willing to leave behind for the flight back. The shop is lovely. I don't knit but I'm sure it's a paradise for someone who does. My comment is for the staff, one young lady in particular who was rude and condescending to my clearly elderly mother. Sometimes people other than your desired clientele will enter the store. You are in the retail/service industry, so your sole purpose is to be kind to all customers, especially one who is older and obviously confused. Someday this may be you, or worse, you may be the upset daughter who witnessed such unkind demeanor. Do better. read more

Haven't found this place to be helpful or friendly when I go here. I've been coming here for 3 years now since it's the only place in the area. I don't find them helpful at all. Anytime I come in to ask a question or ask help on a project they would rather schedule me a session. I just have a simple question or help on a project. I have tried numerous times to like this place but I find them unhelpful. I sure miss my knitting store in San Jose where you could just pull up a chair and get help and sit and knit. Too bad they will be losing me as a customer. I will drive to Santa Cruz now Since they have 2 lovely shops, The Swift Stitch and the Santa Cruz Yarn Store. Both smaller but nicer, friendlier, helpful staff and welcoming. Plus they carry Malabrigo yarn, which Monarch refuses to carry. Don't bother with this place. read more

Love this shop! It was pretty much my first stop when I got to the area. Picked up some great Madelinetosh yarn for a pair of socks. Was told that they would be open on Sunday to help out and or answer any questions on knitting projects. I didn't end up needing the help, but was so impressed by the thought. read more
