Today is Local Yarn Store day across the country, a day that encourages knitters to support independent yarn stores, so I made it a point to visit Fillory Yarn, which is in my neighborhood. I used to knit a lot, but lost interest a couple years ago, and recently decided to try and get back in to it. When I arrived at Fillory I was immediately greeted and asked if I needed help with anything. I asked for a simple pattern to help ease me back into knitting. The staff member (maybe the owner?) guided me to a table covered in free patterns they were giving away for LYS day and said I should pick one and then they would help me find the right yarn for the pattern. I picked what I hope is an easy shawl pattern and then another staff member led me to the appropriate yarn section. There were so many choices of beautiful yarn I had a hard time deciding. I finally settled on a skein of Malabrigo in variegated shades of blue. I didn't see the needles I needed for the project, but it turned out they had them behind the counter. It was so convenient to be able to buy everything I needed at once. To top it off, they offered to wind my skein right then and there. Usually yarn shops don't offer this service on special days like today when the shop is crowded with customers. Fillory has been around for many years through several owners. They have a large selection of yarn and helpful employees who work hard. There is also a dedicated space for social knitting if you want to drop by to knit with others. They offer a variety of classes, too. read more

I don't always walk 40 minutes from my hotel when I'm in-town for a conference, but when I do, it's in 85 degree heat and to visit a San Jose knitting store during the Bay Area Yarn Crawl! After my trek, Fillory Yarn was like an oasis. I immediately felt welcomed by the coziness of the store (it's very welcoming and inclusive), as well as the very friendly and helpful employees. Multiple said hi and welcomed me in, asking if they could do anything for me or if I needed any assistance. I've only recently begun to get into knitting and I loved their social knitting table! More stores should have that. I live in SF and I suppose SJ stores have more space for that. There were multiple people sitting and knitting and chatting. I also appreciated their sale section! I didn't buy anything from that section, but considered it. I also got a 5% off discount off my first purchase for joining their loyalty program. Everyone was so very helpful and friendly, quite a few employees and they all asked if I needed help. I loved their examples of items that were made with yarns they sold. They have an extensive collection and variety across types of yarn, materials, yarns for different items, books, accessories, and items across different price points--there is something for everyone and anyone, which makes sense. Fiber arts are political and I've been very impressed at how stores and fiber arts communities are welcoming everyone of all backgrounds into the fold. I'm disappointed but not surprised that some Yelp reviews reflect people who don't appreciate that inclusivity. read more

I used to really enjoy shopping here. My hobbies are for fun, not politics. This store has decided to shove ideology to the front. This whole "fiber arts are political" movement is laughable. Some of us just like to knit. I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

I have been inside/called this store 4 times. Every single time, it is a chilly experience. First time in with one of my kids, I got a definite feeling they did not like kids and the workers glared at us. Second time, a knitting group was there and it was like I was interrupting their group chat. Third time I made a purchase, which was rung up in silence. Fourth time, I called to ask for advice. I curtly received a phone number, and when asked details, I was told, "I don't know anything about this person, there's just a card here." If you think knitters are friendly, helpful old ladies, you are wrong, they are unfriendly women of various ages who want you to drop dead. read more

Great store- Great knowledge- Great experience- -all of which saved me from making a rookie mistake in my choice of yarn. Gentle guidance and advice is more valuable than a bucketful of blarney. And for my two cents, being pounced on when entering most stores may be a necessary and welcome expectation by the locals, but a friendly smile is more than enough for me. read more

I've been coming to Fillory for approximately three years and I've always had positive experiences every time. The yarn selection is outstanding and the staff always make you feel welcome and are ever so helpful. I came as a "wannabe" sock knitter and I've accomplished this with much help from staff and the wonderful social knitters that populate this store. I've met so many generous knitters who were kind enough to share their knowledge with me. I credit the staff at Fillory for creating a warm, supportive environment for everyone. Lots of cascade, Rowan, Plymouth, blue sky fibers, and much much more. Always at least a few folks hanging out knitting in the store as well. This is hands down the best yarn shop in the area in terms of selection -- the owner is wonderful and it's clear a lot of care goes into curating such a great variety of fibers and colors. I always find something beautiful here. However, customer service can be hit-or-miss depending on who is working. Most of the staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help. Unfortunately, I've had a few encounters with one employee who has come across as dismissive when I've asked for basic assistance, such as matching a yarn weight for a pattern. It made me feel uncomfortable asking questions, which is disappointing in a craft environment. Despite that, I continue to shop here because the quality of the store overall is excellent -- I just hope the customer experience can become more consistently welcoming. read more

But unfortunately I got to experience what others experienced in the reviews below... - I was not greeted immediately upon entering the store. I was greeted once I was turning into an isle. Vs the next person who came into the store was welcomed immediately. - The vibe or energy from the people in the store was very weird. I felt very uncomfortable looking around and browsing the yarn selection. - The young employee that I asked for help was nice and guided me through the store. But there was a group of older women and they were not welcoming at all.. In the end I decided to not spend my money in a store where I do not feel comfortable or welcomed. Glad I found a yarn store that is local to me. I have been learning crochet and was looking for some new yarn for upcoming projects. I was really interested in looking at all the hand dye yarn. The two ladies in the store were very kind and welcoming. Didn't feel judged for being a beginner. I was happy to see the quality and large selection to choose from. I felt like Julia Roberts in the scene where the dress shop denies her service. After being treated rudely and whispered about, I decided not to stay for the class I signed up and paid for due to feeling unwelcome and uncomfortable. I waited for a response to an email I sent two days prior requesting a refund to no response and when I called to follow up the manager was full of excuses and would not issue a refund. The employees here need to learn how to treat people with professionalism and kindness. I will never go back. -I appreciate the response, which was much more courteous than the phone conversation earlier this afternoon, however, the manner in which I was treated was why I left the class. I did not anticipate being talked about and treated rudely in advance! How could I have canceled in time to receive a refund when the reason I did so was due to the discomfort I felt from your employees? Shame on you for not doing the right thing in this situation. read more

Absolutely love coming to this shop during my days off. The workers are always so welcoming and knowledgeable about their stuff. Recently splurged and got the Lykke crochet hooks and I adore them, lightweight and so nice to use. They always having something to look forward to on the racks right by the cashier desk and its nice to have a wide variety of yarns and materials to look through. Also have bought a bunch of other stuff from here like my current yarn winder, portable yarn holder, and my yarn swift and they've held up so well. Definitely recommend stopping by, I know I will be going back during my next day off!! I will never ever shop in this store again. My daughter had a class in there on Sunday and the employees were very unwelcoming to us both. From telling me I could not sit in their store until it opened up which it was opened up for the class so I left as my daughter sat at the small table they asked her to sit at the employees were whispering things about my daughter, and I which my daughter could hear. My daughter walked out and sent an email and never got a response back we called today and talked to the owner and the owner was just as bad. No customer service whatsoever she had an answer to everything instead of trying to understand how we felt about the situation. Ordered yarn to pickup for a new project. This was my first time shopping at an actual yarn store instead of Michael's and JOANN. Everyone was friendly when I walked in but a little reserved. Loved how the vibes were when I saw people in the store knitting and crocheting. Bought hanks of Cascade Ultra Pima Cotton Knitting Yarn and they were beautiful. I moved back to San Jose after being gone for many years. I think I visited once before when it was called green planet. I've visited twice in the last few months and have been satisfied with their yarn selection and overall environment. They have a lot of wool and cotton products. They also sell needles and hooks that aren't offered at other stores. For example, I bought a Chiaogoo corded Tunisian crochet hook. At some LYS, the community crowd can be... off-putting and make shopping a less than welcoming experience. Not here. The store community are friendly and engaged if you're looking for opinions. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable as well. They also know how to leave you alone to browse, which I've found staff at other stores can struggle with. I recommend this store. read more

While in the San Jose area my husband and I stopped at a few of the local yarn stores. The first store we went to (uncommon threads) seemed to be a bit more stuffy, more expensive yarns, for the generally older crowd. This spot however was exactly what I was looking for. They have a good mix of expensive and reasonably priced yarns. They have good music going and a table where there were about 7-8 local knitters hanging out and talking. The yarn mostly comes in hanks, but the staff is willing to cake it for you. I ended up walking out with some beautiful Prima Cotton yarn and a great experience talking to the locals. This store is accommodating and non-intimidating for us beginners. I loved it and will absolutely return. read more

New knitter here! I've heard knitting stores can be extremely intimidating, but this one is cheerful and the staff has been very helpful in getting me set on the right track. Phew! I guess I really lucked out with this being the closest knitting store in my area. I have to say I appreciate that they didn't try to dissuade me from knitting with fingering weight mohair on metal needles for my very first project. They helpfully clued me into holding it double by pulling different ends from the same cake. And we all had a good laugh when they learned I was trying brioche before starting simpler projects like a stockinette sweater. They didn't judge me for my foolhardy approach and I've had fun working my way backwards! Thank goodness for YouTube tutorials. I was hoping there would be a sit a knit kind of vibe, but I plan to check out their classes for that. Had another great experience at Fillory Yarn! Went in with a vague notion of what I wanted (a yarn to match a variegated skein bought earlier to "evoke water" for an Assigned Pooling project). Immediately I was helped by Heather who took me to the section and helped me pick out a yarn that totally evoked water! My variegated was Knitted Wit Broken Earth and the watery one I got was Mod Yarns Ramona. She was so helpful, kind, enthusiastic and creative! This is the second time I have annoyingly come in with a vague description and she helped to pick yarns that have made my most fantastic pieces! I was so very pleased to see there are still some non-chain yarn stores in the area. I was greeted warmly by the staff, and walked around the rows of yarn sorted and labeled so meticulously. I had in mind getting some 220 Superwash, to complete a granny-square blanket I had started, and was happy to see an entire wall and pallete of good colors. The small crafting area for classes and people doing work was very nice, and had 3 ladies discussing their work.
