Don't let the size of the store fool you into thinking that there aren't the most gorgeous fabrics hiding here. I'd been buying from Thai Silks since they were in Los Altos over 40+ years ago. Many of the garments I made are still in constant wear rotation! If you're looking to purchase exquisite silk fabric, go here. I recommend calling the shop first to see if they have the colors and patterns you want in the momme weight you want. When I visited, even solid silks such as burgundy and pink were out of stock. That was disappointing. Also, you need to ask them about their discount policy. I was told that purchases over $200 would qualify for a 25% discount. They had fabric samples hanging on multiple racks that they roll outside one at a time. They will also set up a folding table outside if you want to look through their fabric scraps box. AKA Thai Silks.... this is a medium sized, clean, well organized store with a large selection of silks, chiffons, velvets, brocades and such. Solid and printed...irridescent and not. Mostly high end dress fabrics. Expect to pay some money for this kind of quality... (though they do have some end of bolt clearances) but they are very nice and chances are you will find what you need. They seemed to carry many beautiful and unique colors and prints. I found the perfect orange sherbert color lightweight silk to go under a too sheer costume I purchased and I didn't have to drive all the way to SF to do it. Score. read more

I found silk for my bridal gown here. They have a great variety of all types of silk in a small showroom backed by their warehouse. Their pricing is very reasonable as they are a fabric supplier/distributor rather than strictly a fabric retail outlet. Their selection is greater than Britex for silks. Thai Silk's offering consists almost completely of silk but has a few cupro, rayon and polyester fabrics that you may want for lining or interfacing for garments. I have been a customer for years and have always had the best service from them as well as quality silk fabric and scarves for my batik creations. Recently I decided to do a multi leveled batik art work and needed a very sheer silk fabric for the top layer. Exotic Silk....that's my other stage name. But that's neither here nor there.... I actually really like this fabric store. I was told by a family friend that it was owned by east Indians, but that a lot of Vietnamese go there to find fabrics for Ao Dai (traditional viet clothing.) So I traveled my way up to the LA (Los Altos for those who ain't down wit it) and found myself at Exotic silks. I went in expecting some awesome Sari fabrics sold by colorfully-clad Indian women, but instead found...asians! I thought that since it was aka "Thai Silks" that they might be Thai. But once I heard their accents, I knew I was home. I'd know a Vietnamese accent even if I were deaf. I can't believe I found my people even in the very white-town of Los Altos! I have to say I'm quite proud of them - they actually have decent customer service, believe it or not. I met one of the most helpful and nicest fabric store workers ever. One of the ladies was a lil cantankerous, but they rest were ready to help. They have a nice selection of silks (exclusively silks I believe) that range from very colorful and wildly printed fabrics (not necessarily very pretty) to gorgeous iridescent Thai, dupioni and charmeuse silks. After searching all over San Jose fabric stores, I found some fabric for my wedding Ao Dai! And believe me, my mom was more than relieved. The prices were reasonable for silks, especially since several stores come and buy whole rolls to sell at their own. They ranged from $4-$20+ depending on the type of silk. I docked a star just because I feel like the selection still isn't as good as the stores in Westminster. I used to purchase all of my fabric for my custom tuxedo vests from Britex in San Francisco. But after I had a couple made, Britex's choice of silk brocade started to wear thin. A client recommended Thai Silks (aka Exotic Silks) and so off I went down the peninsula. Their selection of silk brocade is incredible! They have five or six different patterns in *each* color of the rainbow (compared to Britex's 1 or 2 in popular colors and zero in other colors). Instead of one blue brocade to choose from I found four that I liked, and spent the next hour narrowing it down. Oh, and I also got a green pattern and an orange/gold pattern as well. And Thai Silks is extremely reasonable: I bought three 1.5 yard bolts of fabric for less than I would have paid for 1 yard at Britex. Seriously. Britex charges $60/yard, and at Thai Silk it's usually $18/yard for their brocade. I even saw the same damn red pattern I'd bought at Britex the year before, for 1/3 the price! They have every other fabric you'd need as well: from other silks to faux fur and more. If you can't find parking right out front on State Street, work your way around back - there is a lot in back that is always loaded for bear. And when you're done, reward yourself with an ice cream next door. read more

I came to thai silk with my school to have a look at wide selection of silk and get some lecture on silks. when I went into this place, I was like...wooooow. silk fabric they carry there is just so beautiful!!! I got 25 % off because of the valentine's day sale. I was trying to find beautiful fabric that suits my image of the garments that i am going to make for my school fashion show at SFState, and ended up fiding some here. They are gorgeous! It requires some driving to do but its worth it. You will find things that you won't find in Britex, Beverly's, Jo-Anns, discount fabric, or anywhere else that is your usual quick fabric stop. read more

I've been here a handful of times and each time the experience was just "meh," but nothing to warrant me writing a review. I guess my experience today just drove me over the edge a bit and I decided to finally give my input. Generally, when I enter this store, I expect no real help, and go in knowing what I need instead of browsing around and expecting someone to recommend something. Usually it's fine, I pick out what I need, they cut it for me, I pay, I leave, everything is good. Today, however, this happens: I get there around 10am, which is an hour after they normally open, and they have a sign on the door that they are doing inventory today, but they are still open. Okay, one would assume that if they are still open, one can go in and buy things they need, but may expect a delay because of the inventory. I am okay with that, because all I need is a pre-cut China Silk scarf which they have plenty of and they are arranged in boxes by size/color/type. As I walk into the store, the boxes of said scarves are organized near the entrance, which I did not pay attention to at first, but it does come into play later. I head over to the scarf size samples, pick out the one I need and take it over to one of the counters. The lady at the counter smiles at me and asks how she can help. I show her the scarf size I need, with the item number and everything. And she tells me this: "Oh, we are doing inventory today, and the scarves are scattered all over the place, can you come back?" Wait, what? Okay, I quickly thought to myself, usually I would just go and come back another day, but there were a few things wrong with that: - I was leaving town tomorrow only to come back after New Year and I was hoping to give the scarf to someone as a New Year's gift, so it would be "now or never" type of thing. - The scarves were not "scattered everywhere," they were still in their boxes, organized by type, so she would not have to go look through each scarf in a pile of hundreds, she would just have to find the correct box, and they were pretty damn organized - The store was still open and they let customers in, which means that she could indeed spend the 5 minutes looking for the scarf I needed. So I was honest towards her and said "I am leaving town tomorrow, so it's now or never kind of thing, I can look for them myself if you'd like..." I don't know what changed her mind, but she ended up taking the item number from the sample and headed towards the boxes. Not two minutes later she comes back with the correct one. Now, was that so hard? Okay, I understand that I am only spending $20 on a scarf today and I am sure you would prefer I spent more on the yardage, but I don't have the time today. And I was not asking for anything outrageous - I did not ask her to go through a pile of fabric to find something that may or may not be there. Overall, the customer service is below - average. Two stars taken off for customer service (because it's either "meh" or "sucks big time," so I can't in good conscience rate them higher) The prices are just okay. Depending on the material, you may find a great deal or you may get ripped off. I'm not one of those people who buy fabric once in a while - I design costumes and my job is to know what fabric costs. Just watch what they charge you. Once, they tried to charge me a price for a much more expensive fabric when I was buying a cheaper lining piece. Just know what you need and what it's supposed to be like, otherwise you may end up with $30/yd lining fabric. read more

those who sew and craft with fine fabrics MUST stop here. We had heard about this place for years and I have mail ordered from them on occasion - but it is so much more fun to go there in person. Looking at 2 inch fabric swatches at home or on the internet just doesn't do justice to the array of gorgeous high quality fabrics they have in stock. The store is extremely well organized by type and color of fabric, and easy to navigate. there are quite a few in-store specials (markdowns on the by-the-yard price). We got some lovely fringed silk scarves and some gorgeous fabrics. I was looking for natural fibers for dyeing and got a heavy silk with an almost unnoticeable flaw for 50% off the retail price. The shop is thoughtfully stocked with a table of reference books and the major pattern catalogs (although they do not stock patterns themselves, the catalogs are helpful to check yardage requirements and figure out how much to buy). We loved the two sales ladies who assisted us, they were extremely friendly and helpful and one of them even gave my mom a lot of great advice on techniques in response to a question she had about sewing silk fabric. Also, at the time we visited they were running an in-store Mothers Day Sale for local customers which resulted in additional discounts plus the gift of a little floral handkerchief for each customer which charmed our socks off. We did not have a chance to explore the surrounding shopping area which reminds me of some areas of Palm Springs - single story outdoor shopping area with on-street parking and tons of little shops that might make an interesting few hours of exploring - next time. thank you Thai Silks! read more

This is the place where I chosen my fabrics for the wedding dress of my dreams. Although, I did not get exactly the dress of my dreams, the process of selecting the materials was made easier by a few of the knowledgeable clerks that worked here. They carry several high end silks at very reasonable prices. If you ever need fabric don't hesitate to try this place but do be sure to research the type of material you need in advance because although charmeuse is nice, it will not hold it's shape in a wedding dress, unless you're going for the "night gown" look. Be sure to ask the employee's for recommendations and ask for prices in advance. read more

I don't go to Exotic/Thai Silks often, but this is where I usually get silk on the Penn. I've gone there several times to pick up silk noil for class usually. I've also picked up silk charmeuse and once ordered there entire sample collection. (Swatches are difficult to find in the Bay; although you pay for it, you get a good variety.) They have an amazing array of choices. In the noil alone, I must have been staring at at least 10 different colors. I've heard that the ladies there are not the most friendly people in the world. Yes, that may be true. But I've never had a cause to complain about it. Once, I had been there browsing and asking her to cut fabric at the same time and she did help someone else while I kept looking around, but I didn't have a problem with that. They don't pretend to be seamstresses (but then some of the workers at Jo Ann's don't even know what kind of fabric they sell!). When she cut my charmeuse, she advised me to not use tailors' chalk because the lady who made a shirt for her stained it permanently. To sum it up, I've had MUCH WORSE service elsewhere. I don't mind the drive -- it's always beautiful on 280 anyways -- but I love not having to fight hard for parking! read more

It's mostly for apparel and not decorator fabrics like Silk Trading in the Potrero District. We went here in search of fabric to make traditional Vietnamese dresses (Ao Dai).When we first walked in, I thought hmmm, this might work out...they seem to have a lot of variety. This place has variety but like another reviewer said, most of the fabrics/designs aren't very attractive. More like remnant cr*p. It's like finding a needle in a haystack. There is a decent selection of silk taffeta and brocade in the back but other than that, don't waste your time. My gripe with this place would be one of the two Vietnamese women working there. The shorter, rounder lady approached us and was nicey-nice at first, but I soon came to learn that she def was not. She spoke to me in a condescending manner and was totally trying to sell hideous fabric to my mother. I didn't appreciate the way she was talking to me so I expressed that to her. Though I sometimes may not look like it, I speak fluent Vietnamese lady! Anyways! I thought it was an isolated incident and was going to let it go until I heard the way she was speaking to other customers in the store. NOT NICE AT ALL. You may have a tiny store in the middle of downtown Los Altos, but get off your high horse, geez! I actually ordered through their website, after reading about the good reviews of the physical store. I wasn't disappointed! I initially ordered one of their sample sets, which came in just a few days. I picked out the fabrics and put in my order the same day I received the samples. I do recommend getting a sample set to make sure colors/weights/textures are as you expect. The next morning I received a call to check the details of my order and ask if, due to the large yardage of one fabric I was purchasing, I wanted to buy the remainder of the bolt (another 3.5yds) for a deeply reduced price. They also wanted to make sure I wasn't eligible for any other discounts such as professional discounts (I'm not). I appreciated that the offers they made were relevant to my order, they did not try to sell me irrelevant things, and the general professional tone and courtesy of the woman who called (I am sorry I didn't write down her name, but per my invoice Isabel filled the order). I was also informed that my order would be shipped that day (less than 24hrs after I placed my order). My fabric came just a few days later and is as good as if not better than the samples I'd received. I am thrilled! read more
