Morrocon lamp I got todsy!
Lynn H.

I went in just to look. Famous last words. The outdoor garden area has all sorts of treasures and the lady working there was super nice. There was a lamp I liked, that I was sure way over my budget and I almost didn't ask the cost. When she told me I was shocked and decided to get it!

What's New? Located…read morein a 1927-era building that once housed the "Carmel Canning Company warehouse #2," and was granted "Historic Structure" status by the City of Monterey in 1994, one year before the Antique Mall opened in June '95. This place is by far my favorite antique store in the Bay Area, as its 21,000+ sq ft of floor space and two floors are occupied by over 100 different merchants selling everything from modern art and jewelry to old toys and abundant knickknacks. The only issue with this place is the parking situation, which can be a bit of a hassle, especially on weekends. Fortunately, it's a bit removed from the more popular Cannery Row area and on the opposite side of the Aquarium, so while it may be difficult, it's not impossible. Otherwise, come forth and feast your eyes on the treasures to behold. Just make sure you give yourself at least two hours to take it all in, or you're going to miss out on some interesting finds.

It's not unlike any other antique mall across the US, small stalls, probably owned by individuals that pay rent to have their merchandise seen. I spent about 20 minutes in there and saw everything on both levels. Found a few things that were priced decently. The people ringing customers up or friendly and efficient. Parking is street parking and it is metered. Tax is higher than I anticipated. My total was $45 before tax and over $49 in the end.

This event is loosely called Antiques and Vintage Market. Upon visiting today there weren't more…read morethen a handful of vendors, most selling junk at extremely high prices, and from what I heard going on, the vendors were not willing to barter. I also didn't see a bathroom anywhere on the grounds. Bad move. Plus, there were dogs everywhere going to the bathroom and most owners just left the dogs mess and walked on, one dog in particular, was obviously sick as he was trailing behind his owner coughing, sneezing and having diarrhea as they walked around the stalls. The owner was completely oblivious and left all the dog's feces lay and walked away. With dog flu running rampant in our area right now this poor animal was probably contagious and all other dogs who came in contact with him or the little gifts he left behind are now ill as well. Just horrible. This is truly not an event I would ever visit again. Such an extreme disappointment.

A few booths had new cr@p pretending to be antiquities--those definitely need to go. Hope the mix will evolve in the months ahead. And also hope the organizers will get the food and toilet situations up to par. Those make a difference for shoppers. Monterey needs a market like this so I hope improvements are made and buyers show up with ca$h!
