I really enjoyed the Rubber Duck theme for the whole menu, and how each drink is inspired by characters in 1970s Montreal. The drink I chose was the Death Mark. I am a huge fan of mint and peppermint. The Death Mark is mint chocolate ice cream in alcohol form. The balance of the alcohol and crème de menthe was chef's kiss. Today, a Nordic shrimp roll was calling me but will reserve that when I return with friends over a glass of white vino... for now, I opted for the menu du jour grilled cheese, and their signature latte with steeped rose petals and pink peppercorns - a brighter, fruitier, milder in spiciness than the black peppercorn. Opened in February 2021, headed by Pénéloppe Tancrède (Brasserie Harricana) and Gabriel Lavallé (Café Paquebot), is a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. It just so happened that it was a short walk from my hotel, so we decided to check it out one night before heading to dinner. The Cloakroom is a speakeasy, nestled behind a hidden door in a men's clothing shop. In the line of being a speakeasy, the space is small - there are only 24 seats but since we got there right at opening we were seated right away. The space is dark and intimate, with the bottles of liquor lit up behind the bar providing an attractive focal point. One of the more unique features of the bar is that there's no menu; we told our server the types of liquors we wanted along with the flavor notes and they crafted a cocktail based on our tastes. We ultimately had two rounds; my first drink was vodka-based and fruity, while I went with something gin-based and dryer. Both were very good - there's little fanfare with presentation; the bartenders let the drinks speak for themselves. Service was great; due to the setup, each patron is given extra attention which really highlighted the experience. Overall, I really enjoyed my time at The Cloakroom Bar. This was definitely a unique experience with excellent curated drinks. I would definitely return the next time I'm in Montreal.

Our nightlife is what makes our city and I really hope the provincial and federal government get together behind some actual coordinated support for these crucial local businesses. I used to live near Hemisphere gauche and have walked by all kinds of different crowds gathered outside, it's so awesome to see how different kinds of communities can feel welcomed in live music venues and bars and I love walking by and feeling, not just unthreatened, but somehow welcomed in their midst. I've sat on the window ledge here and enjoyed a cheep beer and the people watching, and I've rolled in here with a crew of badass lady friends after another bar closed and the staff let us take over their karaoke set up and drink whiskey and sing all our frustrations out till closing time, no fuss.
