Hands down the best speakeasy or cocktail bar we visited while in MTL. It's behind a hidden door…read morenext to the smallest bar in Canada, which is so fun. You want to be brought in and it's dark and moody with the BEST craft cocktail list. The theme is duck - which is so fun. Our bartender was OUTSTANDING. He gave not only the best drink recommendations, but also gave us a hand written list of his favorite spots in MTL (drinks, dining, activities, etc). I wish we would've gotten his name because I cannot praise him enough!

The first time, the music was extremely loud, and it seemed like they were short-staffed. The bar was completely packed, and there was only one bartender making drinks, so the wait was a bit longer than expected. We decided to give it another try, and I'm so glad we did. The second visit was amazing! The bartender working that night was incredible--she clearly knows her craft and made our drinks quickly without sacrificing quality. Every cocktail was delicious, and the overall experience was much more enjoyable. Overall, I highly recommend The Coldroom. My only suggestion would be that, with a space that busy, the bar could really benefit from having an additional bartender during peak hours. It would help keep wait times down and make an already great experience even better.

Very cool vibe and aesthetic. We loved hanging out in this swanky environment for a quick bite…read more The service was kind of slow even though there were only 2 tables - ours and one other. That was annoying because we had to wait a long time to order for no reason. The menu is online and their website doesn't have an English option. Very inconvenient and not tourist friendly. Minus one star for an all around poor experience ordering. The host/waiter was drying glasses at the bar and kept blowing into them to get water droplets out so minus one star for that. So gross. The food came out separately even though we ordered at the same time and made it clear one dish was for one of us and one was for the other. That meant that one of us was eating while the other waited because the food was going to get cold. Minus another star for splitting the order by a full 10 minutes. This place has a lot of potential. The flavor of the nigiri was great, but the portion size was amuse-bouche and not tapas. To charge $15 for 1/2 oz of beef and 5 cents worth do rice is highway robbery. The shishito peppers were great, all 4 of them. Most of the dish is peas which are used as filler. Again, charging $15 for about $2 worth of ingredients is ridiculous ESPECIALLY since the flavor of that dish wasn't anything spectacular. If you want less expensive shishito peppers with better flavor AND a great view, head over to Terasse Nelligan. Bottom line, I wanted to love this place when I walked in, but left underwhelmed and feeling ripped off having spent $40 for two tapas plates.

You walk in and there's a clothing store on one side and black curtains straight ahead. I just stood there confused for a second until someone suddenly appeared and escorted me through the curtains, down a long dark hallway, and into this intimate, dimly lit bar. Turns out, I had accidentally stumbled into a speakeasy. The space is tiny--maybe 6-8 seats at the bar and a long banquet along the wall for 10-12 more people. No menus either. They ask what you like and don't like, then craft a cocktail specifically for you. The pours are generous and the bar is stocked with top-shelf liquor. About a drink and a half in, I realized I needed actual food immediately and had to leave. The staff was friendly, personable, and chatty, and because the space is so intimate, you naturally end up talking with the people around you. Definitely more of a solo or date-night spot than a group hang. Such a cool, unexpected experience.

From our hotel, we took the subway to Station Beaubien and found this bar nearby on the quite bustling St-Hubert. A small sandwich board directed us to climb a dimly lit stairwell. At the top of the stairs was Snowbird where we were immediately taken with the darkly kitschy atmosphere. The bar itself was long and fully occupied, and the rest of the compact space was well packed. We thought we might have to leave, but the host found us a high top table that had just opened up. It definitely checked the Trader Vic's box as we were genuinely delighted with the array of tropical libations presented on the animated placemat (Photo 10). Their four-snowbird potency scoring system was helpfully amusing with three snowbirds indicating "You're going to text your ex". Both of us hit three snowbirds with our orders. Jamie went for the C$16 Bahama Mama made with Planteray 3 Stars, coconut rum, orange, pineapple, lime juice, and hibiscus syrup. Mine was the C$16 Painkiller with Planteray Dark, Agricole rum, pineapple, orange & lime juice, Don Gardenia's mix, and coconut syrup (Photo 9). Both of us were pleased with our selections though I think they could've dropped the rating to two snowbirds which indicate "You're gonna stay up late". It was surprisingly not overly loud as we were able to pick up on the obscure songs they were playing through the Shazam app. The staff was friendly, and there was just one particularly industrious server handling the entire space. We didn't stick around for a second round, but a return visit seems likely someday. Even those with more casual interest in beer probably know that DDC makes really great drinks. And yep, they were excellent. I wasn't there to do a long session, so I got a couple tasters, one including Peche Mortal and the other a NEIPA. Two very different styles and both extremely well done. Beyond that, the space had a very old-fashioned look. Really nice wooden fixtures and a very warm, welcoming vibe. The server was also attentive and friendly, but also knew when to let people sit back and enjoy their drinks. You probably don't need me to tell you, but yes, you should go.

He expressed interest in hitting up some breweries, so I did some research and compiled a few we could potentially visit. Brasserie Dieu du Ciel was one of them, and it just so happened we were in its vicinity after our Mile End food tour concluded. That being said, we made our way over. While I am not a beer person myself, I'll have a round or two if I'm with a group, and can appreciate a good brewery. My first impression of Dieu du Ciel was just that - the vibes were on walking in. The space is pretty large - kinda separated into semi- compartmentalized spaces with tables throughout. There's not much decor, but medium-toned woods throughout which gave it a sort of upscale feel. They offer a food menu, but we were just here for drinks. They have a really wide selection of beer - again, I'm no connoisseur, but I could tell that the selection was way more than other breweries I've been to. I ended up getting a cider for the first round and a stout for my second round - both very good. Service was great, and overall we enjoyed our time at Dieu du Ciel. Their selection and comfortable setting made it a standout brewery for me out of the ones I've visited in Montreal - I wouldn't hesitate to return.
