Probably one of the worst bars I've ever been to. My friend and I stopped for a quick dinner and drinks. When we arrived we sat outside and had put drink orders quickly taken. While the patio seemed like a good idea we soon discovered that it was filled with gnats! They were EVERYWHERE! Flying into your hair, down your shirt, into the drinks, it was disgusting. While we waited for the waitress to take our food order our drinks arrived. The daiquiri I ordered was okay, but the speciality cocktail my friend ordered was undrinkable. I took a sip and could only liken it to old refrigerator water. It was foul! After 45 minutes of waiting we managed to get the waitresses attention and were informed that the cook had got oil into his eye and had to go home. We ended up paying our bill and leaving. read more

This is a neighbourhood bar good for picking up men. Ladies, this is for you. If you are searching for a bar that is filled with employed geeky men, this is the spot. Since the bar is right across the Ubisoft building a large portion of the staff stops by for a pint after work with friends. The staff are kind and quite hipsterie, which comes with the Mile-End lifestyle. The lighting in smooth and warm. During the summer the whole side in front of the bar opens up onto a large terrasse. One thing that really bugs me about bars is how loud they can get. Unfortunately, Waverly becomes loud with chatter, which means it isn't the best spot for a first or second date. Cheers! read more

Bar Waverly is definitely going to my 'top few hangout spots' list Thoroughly enjoyed an afternoon here out on the patio with an extremely good cocktail. This spot has a charm of old bar and colorful lights inside and the light up menu on top of the bar. My husband and I really enjoyed our cocktails and kept ordering more rounds till we were 30 mins late for our dinner reservations and had to sprint (so worth it!) We also ordered a portion of the truffle fries which exceeded and set a new standard for fries altogether (achievement). I would highly recommend this spot and can't wait to go there again. If you are in the area and want to have a chilled out evening with some friends and good drinks- this is definitely your spot. read more

I am a tourist and wanted to enjoy a beer while I ate a bagel with my two friends. We walked in and told them we are drinking and they said ok. We sat down and got our bagels out and the waitress said we couldn't eat them and we had to leave. First off, they just turned away money. How awful of a business person do you have to be to refuse money. We walked across the street and drank 4 beers and ended up ordering lunch too. We spent $60 and this place made zero. Great bar! I celebrated my birthday there and it was great. Staff is super friendly. There are many tables and some space to dance. The little red and yellow lightbulb are wonderful and give this great vibe. They have IPA beers and drinks of all sorts. Picture this.... A glorious summer Saturday in Montreal. At 6pm I am going to catch the roller derby game nearby at Arena St Louis. I know i am meeting friends for a quick bite nearby pre-game (that review is for another jour) Being restless and easily bored i meander from my place thru the streets between Mt Royal and St Viateur. Lo and behold Waverly is open at 4 pm. The windows gloriously open, seating on the sidewalk as their terrace. A warm humid day parched me to get a drink stat. I walk up to the bar, order a Gin Tonic and message my friends with my coordinates. The beauty of the open windows is when the breeze flows in, it reminds you why you love Montreal. Sure its packed in the evening and getting seats are hard when you arrive late-ish. But now I have a roller derby pre-game ritual thats here to stay! read more

I visited the Waverly for the first time last night, and I will definitely be going back, should I find myself nearby and in need of a drink. I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way unless there was a special event, but if I lived within a couple of blocks I would definitely drop by from time to time. The space itself is really great, full of small corners that are both sheltered and open to the rest of the space, on multiple levels. The music playing wasn't too loud, was varied and just good overall background music. The ceiling is beautiful, covered in wooden slats arranged in a geometric pattern, so if you visit, be sure to look up! I didn't experience high prices like other reviewers have mentioned. Granted, we went on a Sunday evening (special specials perhaps?), but the special of pint of Boreal for $5.25 is quite reasonable to me, for such a nice location. Perhaps the other drinks are more costly? They didn't have a price list or menu, so I didn't see what other drinks cost. Or perhaps I've come to accept that drinks at a bar can get pricey. If I want to drink cheaply, I drink at home :) read more

It's amazing how this dive-bar location was re-invented into a swank kind of speakeasy. A great place for a date (especially a first one). Mr. Jon Taffer is a bar expert, consultant and host of the Spike's reality series Bar Rescue, where he himself takes control of dysfunctional establishments and does whatever is necessary to make them great. Mr. Taffer once said, everyone's got three places; where they live, where they work, and that third place, where they spend their leisure time. Amongst my group of friends, Waverly has cemented itself as just that, a good old-fashioned hangout/watering hole. From the staff to the ambiance, the drinks to the crowd, everything is fantastic and as advertised. I am confident that Mr. Taffer would feel no need to make any adjustments to what has otherwise become, a staple in the Mile-End neighborhood. They continue to renovate and make improvements to their consistently energizing experience each and every time you visit. I can only pray that ownership never changes, and that I can one day have my favorite drink, a double CC with a splash of ginger (always given on the side so you can pour to taste) with my unborn son. read more

Now it's looking modern, clean, bright and comfortable - the best change to the space is the wide open floor-to-ceiling windows making the whole bar feel more spacious and connected to the happy action on this loveable corner of the Mile End. An attempt to find a place called the Green Room failed and so, to prevent the risk of hypothermia on a brutally cold Friday night, we ducked into this unassuming corner bar nearby. It reminds me of a local dive from where I live, chock full of young urbanites and college students. Music plays, people dance in random areas of the bar, and I still don't know how much I spent. It's the kind of place where my friend from Philadelphia hooks up with a random local, only to have her boyfriend come back from ordering drinks, unaware, and they lock faces. The Wave has a feel like you are in some cabana dive bar. The evening I came was a very rainy wet one and it was packed inside. Not much great real estate to sit down at so we moved around. They had the windows open and the lights were dim and low. I had a Makers Mark on the rocks and my friends had a few pints. MM serving was a very small ounce for the price. I'm genuinely disturbed that others have dared to give this place less than a full 5 rating. Literally every single staff member, including the bouncers, are friendly and welcoming. The music is insanely good, plenty of casual seating, ridiculously inexpensive drinks, and the crowd is actually the most non-judgemental and warm group I've ever drank around. In a city known for its nightlife and bars, this place stands out. That says a lot. Located right on the corner of St Viateur and St Laurent, the exterior of this bar on a busy night is very inviting. Popped by with a few friends and got seated in a corner booth which was nice. Drinks were fine and apparently food was ok but I didn't try any. Reason for three stars? The music was super loud (because the speakers were right above our heads), and it was *REALLY* hot (fans not working that night). So, drinks + heat + girls in nice dresses with their hair done + not being able to hear each other = a meh experience. Nights like this remind me of why I don't like these kinds of places :p. when I go out with friends, the goal is usually to catch up and so hearing them is usually of importance.. I've had two bad experiences here. After an initially strange night here a few weeks earlier, I decided to give the bar a second chance on a quiet night with a friend. Knowing what it's like to work at low-level customer service jobs, I always try to be as nice and understanding to staff everywhere I go, especially people that have to work tiring late night shifts. On this night, my second time here, during two conversations which were as friendly as possible on my end, I was ridiculed for the drink I ordered (an amaretto sour without egg whites), being told that they shouldn't make it for me since an omission of an ingredient would not align with their bar's standards. After paying, a different staff member reiterated this to me in a condescending and rude way after I tried to talk about it in a joking, friendly manner while paying our bill. This was totally unnecessary behaviour, and is clearly the norm for this place since I experienced it from more than one person. We also were waiting at our table for someone to come take our order for about 20 minutes before I had to go up to the bar and order there, as waiters were walking around ignoring us on an almost-empty night. If you're walking around the area and are just looking for a quick drink at the bar, this is a spot to consider. However, the customer service I have witnessed is just unpleasant. read more

Went there a few times and I can confirm what others have said about the music being VERY loud (can't hold a conversation), and the suffocating heat. Past a certain hour, they had to close the windows to limit the noise and the place literally became a oven. I suppose their fans weren't working or something. The open air seating was great for people watching, and the staff was very friendly.
