Adjusting slightly based on our latest visit. As per usual, stopped in after seeing a show, myself…read moreand 3 friends. We were asked if we could be gone by 7:30, as they were seating us at a table that had a reservation later. The place was nearly empty, so that was odd. We were sat inside, near the patio doors, which they kept open, and it was a very hot, humid day, so it felt as though there was hot air being blown on us. Very uncomfortable. We got drinks, I ordered one with Diet Coke/pepsi, another diner ordered the same drink but with regular, and they didn't tell us which was which when they were delivered, so unsure if the difference was noted. Before ordering food, I asked the waiter what "sauce vierge" was on a particular dish. He said "like a butter sauce". It was not even close. It's actually a lemon, oil, chopped tomato and basil sauce. The dish was also drizzled with balsamic, which did not pair well with the mashed potatoes under it. I've ordered that dish at a different location before and it was nothing similar at all. Someone else got ketchup spilled on them when their meal was being delivered, the server placed it down badly and the cup toppled over, right on a white shirt, which was unfortunate, however the food runner and our server handled it expertly and really went above and beyond, with our server even digging up a Tide stick, and they comped her meal, which we told them was unnecessary. Ups and downs this visit, but I'll still be back again in the future.

Ice hockey was playing on multiple screens so if you are into sports this is a great place to hang out. There was no feeling of being rushed as to be expected here in Montreal. The menu was in French, but each item had a good picture which really helped us figure out what we and our kids would enjoy. Of course we tried the Poutin. It was delicious with a seasoned and salty gravy and the cheese curds were just perfectly soft and delicious. My husband and I shared a beet and spinach salad which was very fresh and tasty. Our kids had mini burgers and fish and chips. The burgers were amazing and the fish and chips, fine, but not the best they had ever had. I had salmon with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots and it was fresh and light and just the warm kind of comforting meal I wanted. Beer selection was also great! We had a short wait coming in, but not too long and we were offered a basket of popcorn while we waited which was a nice touch. Location is great by the huge mall and Christmas markets across the walkway! Everyone was very friendly and could speak French or English which was so helpful for us!

L'Barouf - Mostly empty on a rainy midweek afternoon.

Great spot for an easy drink. Outdoor and indoor seating available. Local beers on tap.read more

As we continue our visit to Montreal this week, we had our first sub-par experience. Friends who…read morelive in the area told us that L'Barouf was one of their favorite bars, with plenty of beer on tap, a good negroni, and free popcorn. Well, it may be a great place for locals, but not so much for tourists based on our experience. We walked in the front door on a rainy mid-afternoon and the place was fairly empty (as one might expect at that time of day) with only a single person at two separate tables and two more people sitting at the bar. My wife and I took seats at the bar as well and the bartender walked over to us, perfunctorily handed us a couple of drinks menus, and hovered over us until we made a selection. She apparently was in a hurry to get back to her conversation with the two local women at the other end of the bar. My wife ordered a glass of sauvignon ($8) and I ordered a Kilkenny cream ale ($9). The bartender returned with our drinks, placed them down in front of us without saying a word, and then went back to the other end of the bar. You could almost feel a shiver in the bar, our reception was so cold. It was if we were intruding on her life. Our interaction with the bartender aside, I do have to say that our friends were right; there is an impressive number of beers on tap here. I thoroughly enjoyed my Kilkenny cream ale, which was absolutely delicious, and I would have ordered another one if I could have gotten the bartender's attention. My wife, on the other hand, just wanted to finish her wine and for us to leave and find a friendlier bar to hang out in. (Which we eventually did. Stay tuned for that review.) I finally got the bartender's attention, signaled that I would like to pay, and she sort of sighed as if to say "okay let's get this over with so you can leave and I can go back to what I want to focus on instead of you..." Believe me, at this point the feeling was mutual.

Be warned that there's a $50 minimum for any group, and that can translate into 2.5 hours of…read morekaraoke, 2 hours of karaoke and one drink, etc. As long as you meet the $50 baseline, you're set. LOCATION It's a little difficult to find as it's tucked down an alley in Chinatown, and it's compounded by the fact that you enter what looks like a mini-mall and go down a set of lit-up stairs before reaching it. You'll find it, but it'll take some exploring. I would also be wary of staying out too late, as we were almost jumped several times upon leaving. ***Don't walk on the sidewalks, walk in the middle of the street!!!*** KARAOKE The sound system isn't as good as other karaoke bars I've been to, but it does what you would want it to. They use a Chinese karaoke system, so knowing how to read Mandarin would be helpful when navigating the portal. Since it doesn't have a wide selection of English songs, they Chromecast YouTube to the TV, and you can karaoke from there. Not the most professional, but it does the trick. One thing about the portal system too is that you can't karaoke without the actual artist singing as well, so that was a MAJOR downside for our experience. We asked the owner about it when she came in to check on us, but she said that some songs had the artist singing along and others didn't. You just had to be lucky when choosing the song. We got it to work, though, once by pressing random buttons, but were never able to replicate it afterward. DRINKS If you're looking for good drinks, this is not the place. We shared a Sprite Vodka, and it was worth the price considering it was mostly vodka, but the execution of what we ordered was off. SERVICE The barista/cashier up front was very accommodating in explaining to us how the system worked and resolved any issues should we have any (upping the volume, how to connect YouTube from our phones to the TV, etc. Again, the downside of our experience was that they didn't know how to navigate the system so the artist wasn't singing along with us (which defeats the purpose of karaoke). Unlike other karaoke spots I've been to, the place here was very flexible in regards to timing, and we were able to sing a little longer than our allotted time without penalty. Overall, if you're really itching to sing, this place isn't bad, but other places might be more worth your fancy.

Had a good selection of songs with music videos available ranging from chinese, korean, english songs. Comparable karaoke experience to other areas with more of an east asian community like in Greater Toronto Area. One thing to note is it is $30/hr a small room. Can easily fit 5-10 people. There is a minimum spend of $150 per party. So if you spent 3 hours here you would need to spend $60 on drinks. Just something to note to see if its in your budget, but very reasonable rates The owners were very nice and gave us car freshners as a gift and took a selfie with us. They also had some dice to play with which was a nice bonus
