I came to MVP Sports Bar with one very specific assignment:…read more Watch Chelsea play Arsenal. This was a BIG match. Dogs aren't allowed inside, which is completely understandable, but MVP has a nice side-street patio out front with several tables. And--most importantly--a television. Perfect. Mum and Dad explained that we wanted to watch the Chelsea match. Inside the bar, the game was playing on what appeared to be every television in the building. Outside? Not so much. The staff tried to get the match onto our TV. We waited. They tried again. We waited. At one point, instead of Chelsea vs. Arsenal, I was watching a religious sermon. I had questions. Eventually Mum and Dad gave up and put the match on their PHONE. So there I was, at a sports bar, watching one of the biggest football matches of the day on approximately six inches of screen while an actual television sat directly in front of us. Mum ordered the Cajun chicken sandwich with fries and Dad had the chicken tenders. A second waitress also came by later and brought me a water bowl, which I genuinely appreciated. And that's why I'm not giving MVP a terrible review. The patio itself is perfectly pleasant, dogs are welcome outside, we were able to eat and hang out, and the water was a nice touch. But if your primary reason for choosing a sports bar is to watch a particular game with your dog on the patio, I'd definitely recommend confirming that the patio TV can show it first. Because apparently: Chelsea inside. Sunday sermon outside. Dogba's verdict: 3 paws out of 5. The patio: Dog-friendly: Water service: eventually Food for the humans: Chelsea match on the patio TV: Chelsea match on Mum's phone: Unexpected spiritual guidance: extensive Would I return for a casual drink with Mum and Dad? Sure. Would I trust them with an important Chelsea match again? Dogba remembers.

Ice hockey was playing on multiple screens so if you are into sports this is a great place to hang out. There was no feeling of being rushed as to be expected here in Montreal. The menu was in French, but each item had a good picture which really helped us figure out what we and our kids would enjoy. Of course we tried the Poutin. It was delicious with a seasoned and salty gravy and the cheese curds were just perfectly soft and delicious. My husband and I shared a beet and spinach salad which was very fresh and tasty. Our kids had mini burgers and fish and chips. The burgers were amazing and the fish and chips, fine, but not the best they had ever had. I had salmon with mashed potatoes and roasted carrots and it was fresh and light and just the warm kind of comforting meal I wanted. Beer selection was also great! We had a short wait coming in, but not too long and we were offered a basket of popcorn while we waited which was a nice touch. My legs are significantly shorter than theirs, so frankly I had been waiting for someone to acknowledge this. We stopped at Pub McLean's and grabbed a table on the big streetside patio across from Dorchester Square. It's a great place to sit outside, watch Montreal go by and contemplate important matters--such as where we were going next and whether anyone planned to feed me. Apparently, someone did. Almost as soon as we sat down, our waitress brought me a water bowl. Excellent start. Then she returned with PEPPERONI. Excuse me??? I have reviewed quite a few establishments on this trip, and I believe this is what the hospitality industry refers to as exceeding expectations. Meanwhile, Mom and Dad shared a pint and a cider while I settled in to watch the after-work crowd. The patio was lively without feeling chaotic, and there was plenty happening on the street to keep a professional people-watcher entertained. Mom and Dad thought we had stopped here for drinks. I now understand we stopped here for my pepperoni appointment. Dogba's verdict: 5 paws out of 5.
