I would rate it higher, but the prices are insane, especially considering the vast majority of the selection can be had elsewhere or ordered online. Maybe the shipping price evens things out these days when factoring import fees? In any case, staff were friendly enough but also just kinda stood there. Not sure what I would expect them to do, but they weren't busy at the time. Store was clean but rather condensed as well with narrow walkways. The chocolate we did get was tasty. One of the best shops we popped into while visiting the Strip District - chocolate, chocolate, everywhere, and from everywhere! From imported chocolates to novelty character chocolates to locally-made chocolates, they really do have an insane selection. I was most drawn to their local options and their more unique flavors with dark chocolate - Himalayan pink sea salt with pistachio, citrus and vanilla, fig and honey. It's an absolutely massive assortment. Great spot to grab some gifts, since so many of the options here are already sealed and decoratively packaged. Up at the register, they also carry their own name brand line of chocolate-dipped goodies, truffles, and chocolates - check this area for sale prices or lower-priced gift options. They also have an ice cream counter that is currently out of service, but signage indicates that they do have a hot chocolate bar open for the season? I didn't see anyone getting anything from it when I visited, and it seemed like staff were eating their lunches there instead. When it comes to buying premium chocolates look no further than Mon Aimee chocolat. They carry a wide assortment of both domestic and international candies for sale and even have an area where you can have your own box made up. In the pre Co-Vid days they were selling Millie's ice cream to patrons but that is currently on hold for the time being. The carry some of the familiar brands you will find elsewhere but when it comes to the finest domestic or let alone international they have a great variety selection. During my recent visit I got help with my purchases from the owner Aimee herself. Although I've always been a fan of Belgium chocolates she advised me to consider other countries such as Brazil and now the Philippines. Whether you like white chocolate, milk, or dark, they carry it all. I ended up purchasing three candy bars from Theo and Philo, a Philippine provider who graduated from Carnegie Mellon and then set up his own shop. I was here for a Yelp Elite event that enabled me to buy an assortment of their candies at a discounted price. Inside that assortment was a Theo and Philo calamasi bar. It was so good I knew I had to buy more. My own assortment included their choco mango with coconut, dark chocolate with ginger and mint, and dark chocolate with green mango and salt. I'm sure I'll be pleased with these selections. At her suggestion I also purchased a Brazilian chocolate bar called Baru Nut from Mission chocolate. The bar comes completely wrapped in pretty packaging for gift giving. It's a bit on the pricey side but I'm sure it will be worth it. Finally to satisfy my Belgium whim I ended up purchasing a dark chocolate with roasted almond bar from Dolfin one of the top Belgium chocolatiers. I got to sample a couple of other items in my assortment that included a hot cocoa caramel, and a mini venchi dark bar. She carries chocolate covered pretzels and even gingerbread candy boxes. The latter looked tempting but will save that for a future visit. They have set up in the back a holiday assortment and if you need anything from there you need to ask since the back has been sectioned off for employees only. Vegan and gluten-free candy is also available. Check out their offerings from Hawaii! You can also shop online with mail delivery or curbside pickup. They do require you to sanitize your hands upon entering and masks are a must. Photography is prohibited in the store and you are asked to respect that. The selection is endless but there's something for everyone here. They now carry the outstanding line of A 519 chocolates which I have had before and are delicious from the first bite. Mon Aimee Chocolat is indeed one of the best hidden candy gems in the city and is worth a visit if you are in the Strip District of Pittsburgh. I have been obsessed with this place for YEARS! This review is long overdue. Unlike Grandpa Joe's down the street, this store focuses more on gourmet chocolate and candy, as well as a wide variety of candies from around the world. It's truly such a treat to wander around and the store is so packed, you're definitely going to need multiple visits :) I also love that they carry lots of local chocolates. My fave is A519 Chocolate, which is a local woman run business and truffle maker who makes this gorgeous truffles that look like works of art. They're beautiful and they're usually always by the counter convenient for you to grab! They also carry ice cream (Millie's I believe), a decadent sipping chocolate in the winter and a few select pieces of individual chocolate non-wrapped you can buy. One of those chocolates is sponge candy, which is a Buffalo delicacy. I grew up in Erie and it was THEE thing to buy at all the chocolate stores. I can only describe it as being melt in your mouth amazing. Trust me, get it! There's also treats for kids too. I actually saw those Bamboozled Jelly Belly kits... They're the gross tasting Jelly Belly gag gifts. Plus of course cute shapes like cars, animals, etc. This is a GREAT store for stocking stuffers or to buy a gift for someone. They also have some wrapped chocolates that are Pittsburgh themed. They have a gourmet selection of chocolates from all over the world too. Quality chocolate and an excellent selection. Mon Aimee has chocolate from virtually anywhere in the world. You'll find some from Europe (France, Germany, etc), South America, Africa, and even some local brands like A519 and Lux Chocolate. They also make their own chocolates and truffles. Parking can be a bit of a struggle. There's a space near the macaroni factory, though. I tried their coconut toffee macadamia nut truffles, 5 pieces of A519 assorted bonbons, and a Ritter Sport milk chocolate bar with raisin and hazelnuts. The Ritter bar (a German brand) reminds me of the Aldi milk, raisin, and nut bar, but in a good way. Creamy chocolate and plenty of raisins. The bonbons were pretty standard, but what truly made them stand out was not the taste: it was their beauty. The design is truly excellent! The craftsmanship is evident. Their own products are great, too. It was chewy and moderately sweet. The Lux almond, macadamia nut, and coconut bar is also very nutty. It's not quite chocolatey and rich for me, though. However, they said they no longer serve them due to covid. However, they're there in the store, and they even sell pints of gelato and packages of hot chocolate. What would be the difference between scooping a scoop of gelato, putting it in a cup and handing it to me and handing me a pint of pre-scooped gelato? I just don't understand the logic of it. They can hand me a bag of cocoa mix but they can't make a hot chocolate? I specifically asked why and they said "oh we don't make them one by one to be extra safe due to covid." This is a really amazing place to get chocolate from around the world! Unfortunately, they don't allow pictures inside the shop so I couldn't take any photos. The shop isn't too big and carries pre-packaged chocolates and sweets as well as chocolates you can buy by pound. There are a wide variety of chocolates from baking chocolate to chocolate nibs and it was very busy! I ended up getting some sugar free ginger chocolate which was really good. What I love to get an Mon Aimee - Cocao powder (100% cocao chocolate) and Cocao chocolate bars as close to 100% as possible, like 98%. You can't find Cocao in the grocery store very easily. It is expensive, but it's worth it. You don't need very much when it is up around 100%. This store has a lot of different fine chocolate to choose from, but the pure stuff is my love! read more

Not only do they carry all your favorite foreign chocolates (Ritter Sport!), but they have fancy local truffles AND non-chocolate treats. My husband can't have chocolate (migraines), so he was tickled that I picked him up some Herman the German raspberry hard candy and wild strawberry Candy Kittens, a vegan treat from London. Word on the street had it this place has the best hot chocolate in PGH, so I knew I needed to check it out. Unfortunately, I learned the hard way that the hot chocolate is available on a very limited basis--specifically, between 7:30am and 12:30pm on Saturdays. It took me three visits to figure this out: The first time, I came at 4pm on Sat. (out of it for the day), and the second time, I came before noon on Sun. (no hot chocolate served on Sun.). The third time, when I arrived at 12:15pm on Sat. on a bitterly cold Dec. day, was the charm. So how was this mythical hot chocolate? It was good, but not quite what I expected. When another reviewer described it as "thick [and] pudding-like," I expected something served in a bowl-like cup that I'd have to attack with a spoon. Instead, I received a thick, but drinkable, chocolate liquid served in a paper cup (see photo). Was it indeed the best hot chocolate in PGH? Yeah, I guess--at least out of the hot chocolates I've tried. Was it worth $4? Maybe (see answer to point 1). Would I go all the way to the Strip specifically to get it again? Doubtful. In addition to the hot chocolate, I picked up a peppermint-spangled chocolate bar. It was quite pricy (around $8), but the owner, who I asked if there was a smaller version (no), talked up the maker, so I decided to give it a try. I had similar feelings about it to the ones I had about the hot chocolate. Was it good? Yes. Was it worth $8? Probably not. As others have mentioned, the owner (the older woman) is a bit lacking in social graces, as I observed from her abrupt answers to my inquiries about the hot chocolate (I felt like she was the hot chocolate Nazi, akin to Seinfeld's soup Nazi). Even the time when it was available, she introduced some confusion into my interaction with the employee working at the hot chocolate bar. However, she did a great job talking up that chocolate bar! I'd be willing to come back to try the gelato when the weather warms up (I'll update this review if I do). I strongly suspect I'd have a similar reaction to the one I did for the hot chocolate and chocolate bar, however. 3.5 stars. read more

They have so many different types of chocolate and their dark chocolate selection is probably the best I've seen in Pittsburgh. Lots of imported chocolates. They would make great gifts! They also have little "bite size" chocolates which I prefer because I could eat an entire bar of chocolate in one sitting. Free smells. So, maybe you don't want to buy a truffle? Whogivesashit, go in and take a whiff of this place. We're not talking about some huge commitment here. But, if you do have four dollars and change to spare, head straight to the back counter for "freshly churned" hot chocolate. Not the watery kind with a lump of Cool Whip on top, nosiree, this hot chocolate is as close to chocolate al densa (thick Swiss/Italian pudding-like hot chocolate eaten with a spoon) as I've come. They have two offerings - dark and spicy and milk. I opted for the dark and spicy and wow-wee, was it amazing! They even offer small samples before you decide which route to take. The price is a little steep at four dollars-ish for a fist-sized serving, but I'd make the purchase again in a heartbeat. Aside from the hot chocolate, you'll find a wide selection of international chocolates, marzipan, sea salted caramels, and so on and so on. read more

Cute little chocolate shop! We sampled two of their gelatos that come in from Philly daily. The salted caramel and the fig. The fig was insanely delicious. By far one of the best I've ever had in my life. The salted caramel on the other hand, was a different story. The girl serving us mentioned that "you could really taste the sea salt" but should have instead said "you may as well eat a container of salt because you won't be able to taste anything else." The salted caramel was awful. This place is also super overpriced, in my opinion. And I am a native New Yorker visiting Pittsburgh and was shocked by the prices of everything. Walking away from Pamela's we realized there was still plenty of time left on the meter and that The Mattress Factory didn't open for another 40 minutes. Wandering up the strip we noticed a shop we'd seen closed the day prior was now open and decided to stop in to Mon Aimee Chocolat. Greeted by owner Amy Rosenfield the moment we walked in the door I was a bit taken aback - she seemed frustrated...but her mood quickly changing as we entered the shop. Jovial, pleasant, and ready/willing/able to discuss her collection of confections at length it turned out that her original frustration was due to a downed credit card machine and getting the runaround from the IT folks over the phone. Browsing the shop while Amy dealt with the folks via phone we stood in awe of the diversity of the collection Aero bars from Canada, Amadei from Italy, and even Hershey from right up the road. Vintage to current, house made to international, gums, cookies, caramels, and...Capogiro gelato. Already full of Pamela's fantastic breakfast we debated (briefly) whether ice cream before 10am was a good idea - a unanimous yes. Selecting two scoops at a somewhat pricey $4.25 our choices were Cappuccino and Cioccolato Scuro ("Bitter.") Having heard great things about Capogiro but not yet making it to Philadelphia all I can say is that the rumors are true - the flavors were superb, the texture like silk, and the weight light and appealing...the Scuro literally tasted like brownie batter without the doughy texture. Selecting a few creamy salted caramels, a small bag of housemade chocolate covered blueberries, and a few gifts to take home to my aunt we settled the bill and bid Amy good luck with the tech support. This is one of the hardest places to walk by when you're in the Strip and not be tempted to walk in to. If you're a chocolate lover who's looking for some variety, you'll be overwhelmed and satisfied. Looking for gelato in the warmer months? Head to the back fo the store for something delicious! There's really not much else to the store other than a great selection of chocolates from nearly every corner of the globe. The negatives are the service and the prices. Some of the chocolates that you'll find at Mon Aimee can be found significantly cheaper at places like Wegman's (if you're lucky enough to live near one), and we've spent a premium on certain candies in the past that we knew we could get cheaper elsewhere. Sometimes the convenience is worth it, though. As for the service, it's a mixed bag. Generally, I've had trouble getting service when looking at the chocolates in the cases, and the staff never seems to be in a friendly mood. While I GUESS they're doing their customers a favor by procuring such a vast variety of chocolate, I'm not sure they should ACT like they're doing us a favor by existing. I come here for all of my baking chocolate which I get in the large chunks. I almost always grab a luxe bar, my favorite is fig pistachio. I have used their melting chips for making chocolate mousse and chocolate candies. Definitely ask for help if you are looking for something specific because they have everything but some things are harder to find. I'm glad to say I didn't know that in advance and my experience was quite different. I was greeted by a smilling employee eager to assist me. This place has been on my mind because I love sea salt and I like dark chocolate and this is one of the only places I know where one can find dark chocolate with sea salt. They have every kind of chocolate you can think of here. I think this is a great place to pick up a nice gift, chocolate makes a great gift because who doesn't need some gourmet chocolate to eat or to share with guests. I was in Mon Aimee last year buying a birthday gift for someone who likes chocolate and this woman walks in and asks "where's Geno's?" both the shop keeper and I are totally baffled by this question, but the woman insists that there is a restaurant named Geno's near by. She finally says cheese stake and food network and I realize she is thinking of Geno's in Philadelphia. It was pretty funny. I told her she had the wrong city but that we had something better, and pointed her in the direction of Primanti Brothers, which is just two blocks away from the Mon Aimee. read more

I phoned MAC on a Wednesday morning to ask if they could put together a gift basket of dark chocolates by Thursday morning, for a 19-year old young lady. Being a vegan, dark chocolate is one of the kinds of chocolate she can eat. The woman who answered the phone couldn't have been more lovely, knowledgable, and helpful in suggesting items. I pulled up to the curb the next day, phoned that I was there, and she brought out the loveliest package with a beautiful ribbon on it. She refused the tip I offered and just asked me to enjoy it and spread the word. So here I am, giving an honestly enthusiastic recommendation for MAC. A really cute chocolate and sweets shop that was my first stop during my stroll through the Strip District. It's literally everywhere on tables, shelves, and displays all over the place. It's almost overkill in a way as the number of choices literally is paralyzing. However, I was able to find some chocolate covered toffee bites that caught my eye. The owner/staff were really nice and helped me when I was asking about which chocolates were made from "local" purveyors. Also it was hot as hell that day and their AC was literally a life saver for cooling myself down for our midday stroll. read more

My wife and drove over an hour to Mon Aimee Chocolate to get some great chocolate for a special gourmet dinner dessert for a large group. They had a nice selection of chocolate but the older sales person was rude. After being helped for a short time, the saleslady was more interested in helping a man who had just entered the store than helping a woman. We will not be going back! read more
