After telling my husband how much I used to love Betsy Ann chocolate covered strawberries, he bought me some for Valentines Day. They were VERY DISAPPOINTING! You look at this huge "strawberry" the size of a golf ball and think this is going to be soooooo good. The problem arises once you bite in to find it is filled with sugary juices, white cream and HALF A SMALL STRAWBERRY! There was not even a full strawberry in this! The strawberry was not even the size of a quarter. I believe in supporting local businesses, I really do. But, in this case, I have to suggest you save your money! Betsy Ann.... Betsy Ann Chocolates opened in 1938 and hand-makes chocolates and some candies. Customers may purchase the chocolates and candies at this factory store, at retail locations (in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, and West Virginia), through the business's website, or through organizations' fundraisers. My husband and I visited this factory store one time. When we entered the store, an employee greeted us and asked if we needed any assistance. Some of the flavors of chocolates were not labeled, so I recommend that the store add more labels. The employee did answer my question about a particular flavor. This store had many display cases and shelves of chocolates in flavors such as chocolate truffle, cherry cordial, caramel, peanut butter, pecan, cashew, butter cream, pretzel, coconut, Oreo, etcetera. I also saw some candies such as gummies, licorice, and taffy. My husband and I picked out five chocolates for a total cost of $33. The employee promptly rang up our purchase, thanked us, and wished us a good day. At home, my husband and I ate our chocolates. Here are our ratings: Chocolate-covered mini pretzels - 3 stars - I thought that these chocolate-covered pretzels tasted *very* buttery. Peanut-butter cup - 4.5 stars - This chocolate was a large size and looked as if it could have been poured more neatly. I did enjoy the flavor of the peanut butter. Bag of bloopers chocolates - 4 stars - This one-pound bag contained an assortment of imperfect chocolates. I felt happy that a cherry cordial was included, and it seemed to contain crystallized sugar. Some other flavors were nut clusters, peanut butter, coconut, pretzel, etcetera, and they tasted good. Cordial strawberry - 5 stars - A cordial strawberry is covered in chocolate and contains much liquid. According to the business's website, a cordial strawberry is made from a cut piece of strawberry that is dipped in liquid fondant and then chocolate layers. I thought that this piece was a large size and that the cordial was a bit messy but very flavorful. Betsy Ann Chocolates are delicious. So fortunate to have the factory store near our house. The people who work there are always so nice. They have a broad selection of the common things that Betsy Ann's known for like candy bars, pretzels, truffles, etc. Anything we've purchased has been delicious. Recently, they had bags of giant truffles on sale for $12.99. It was an amazing deal and they were delicious. If they have an odds and ends bag, you can get a good deal and sample a few different kinds of deliciousness. I also like to see the things they create for the holidays. They're always so cute. My only complaint is the prices are a bit high for a factory store. Typically, when you go to a factory store, prices are cheaper. They really aren't for most things. read more

I went too Betsy Ann Chocolates on a recommendation from a friend. I ordered several dark chocolate covered treats. They where really good and I would go back again. I did find the pricing too be a bit high in comparison too other chocolate places. I can not say it is the best chocolate I ever had like the other yelper reviews, But it is good. The staff where super friendly and very helpful. I also found that the selection was a little lacking. I would of preferred a larger variety of different chocolate truffles. read more

No doubt the chocolate is delicious. I began my quest when my brother bought my mother a box and I had some of her mixed chocolates at Thanksgiving. However, after spending $180 for Christmas on my daughters and granddaughters and myself, I am sorry to report that the boxes of truffles and mixed chocolates pretty much weren't "mixed". Don't know what happened on that, but there were maybe 4-5 types that were repeats throughout the entire box. This is not what I signed up for. I had told my sister about this chocolate and she bought a box for herself and had pretty much the same experience. My daughters also. I bought cashew poke alongs and truffles for one granddaughter and chocolate covered pretzel bundle pack for another granddaughter. I had the chocolate covered cherries (they could not make a mistake on those) and truffles (maybe predominated by three different types rather than the 8 or 10 different kinds I thought I would get) and I had the mixed chocolates. So, might consider again in the future on a good sale but right now not feeling it. read more

The BA chocolates came to our family as a Christmas present, a box of mixed milk and dark chocolates and a box of milk chocoate meltaways. Outstanding! I've been here twice and both times been under-impressed. The service seems fine if not very friendly/welcoming either time, and the chocolate offerings seem below average and incredibly overpriced. I've never seen a box of truffles that cost $95 in Pittsburgh in my life. Yes, it's an extra-large box, but you can get a medium size box of the best truffles ever at The Speckled Hen (granted, it's a bit of a trek) for $45-ish and small to large boxes of similarly-constructed truffles at Anderson's for $13-$50. The chocolate is good, but I definitely wouldn't say better than Anderson's which is both less expensive and stocks 10x as much product. I appreciate small businesses, but I do feel like there are similar, better options in the Burgh. read more

Literally right down the street from my house Betsy Ann has my favorite chocolate in Pittsburgh (sorry Sarris fans). Particularly their chocolate covered cherries and raisin clusters. I also love (as does my wife) their Sea Salt Caramel Pretzels as well. Pretzels are fresh and caramel is perfect texture as compared to the "Snappers" that Edward Marc is putting out right now. For many many many years our family has been a big fan and customers of this delicious chocolatier. Even when we have lived in various places outside of Pgh, we often stop in while visiting the area to get our fill of this fine chocolate. Mine is anything with their milk chocolate on or in it. A few solid bars of chocolate often accompany each of us on the way back home. At Easter, my fav. item is the peanut meltaway milk chocolate eggs. Very creamy and smooth. I am hooked on them. Besides this, the staff is always pleasant and helpful. Thank you for running this fine business and keeping it as part of the West View/North Hills tradition. Kudos to you all. (PS- the only item I am not too fond of is the regular peanut butter eggs. Sorry, they seem like they are peanut flavored corn syrup filled). My family has patronized Betsy Anne Chocolates for years. We absolutely love their chocolates, especially the truffles. Today I visited the store in West View. Unfortunately, their Covid19 precautions were below par! One of the salespeople and another customer were talking, without wearing masks, discussing how they don't wear masks anywhere! This same salesperson then proceeded to assist a customer. Without a mask, she chose unwrapped chocolates out of the case for the customer and weighed them. I enjoy Betsy Anne Chocolates but not at the risk of Covid19. Please don't shop here if you value your health more than chocolates. read more

Betsy Ann is a great Pittsburgh tradition in chocolate. This small quaint and cute chocolate "factory store" is a sweet gem in the also-quaint-and-kind-of-cute West View neighborhood (technically, West View is a city on its own). This is the factory store where they make, sample, and sell the chocolates. The store has delicious dark chocolate and milk chocolate, both truffles and bars. They also have a variety of chocolate-based and chocolate-related gift items (especially themed for holidays), sugar-free chocolates, and a limited selection of nuts. You will likely enjoy looking at the different varieties of "chocolate art" present in the store that you can actually buy and eat. Betsy Ann's chocolates are on the tender side. Even their dark chocolate truffles and bars feel soft. If you are a *strongly dark* chocolate fan like me, you might be skeptical of this at first, but give the dark truffles a try and you will probably enjoy them melting in your mouth (don't bite, of course, just let them slowly melt) as I did. The chocolate is pure and very rich in flavor. I especially like the dark chocolate truffles and the amaretto truffles, but their liquor truffles are also delicious. The sugar-free chocolate is tasty as well if you can handle the sweetener; Betsy Ann's sugar-free is better than many other brands'. The store is cute and the staff are very friendly. They will give you samples, describe their chocolates, and talk about the store (if you ask). Betsy Ann Chocolate "Factory Store" is a must go if you are in West View. Even if you are not, make an excuse to visit the place if you have the time. I would recommend stopping by the Riverview Park and the Allegheny Observatory to sample the rich history and the wonderful natural beauty of the area while you are there. Now that's a thought -- a chocolate walk at the Riverview Park. In short, go there, enjoy good chocolate, and support a sweet and friendly local business. read more

I ordered 4 pack giant peanut butter cups on line through Macys but it was shipped in Betsy Ann Chocolates box pretty gold box received sealed in plastic factory sealed I opened it 10/1/21 & I was disgusted inside there were 2 missing peanut butter cups and 2 crumbled wrappers someone ate 2 and left the dirty wrappers! I contacted Macys there were going to send out a new box but never did! I called Betsy Ann no cares given just the 3rd degree and denial!!! Karen Paras couldn't care she was argumentive even claiming Macys employee ate it but it came from Betsy Ann box fully shrink wrapped. Worst thing I got Covid on 10/5/21 probably from their lack of care on the assembly line dirty workers!! Don't buy from them see below response from Karen Paras! She even tried to blame the shipper but it was sealed outside shipping box was ripped open by my son while I watched him open it and to think I was so excited to get the chocolate!!! Dear Fran, thank you for your email which was brought to my attention.  I have reviewed it and can honestly say the employee packing, put the lid on the box for break/lunch or end of day instead of keeping it with the unfinished stack and it was sent to be shrunk, case packed and put into stock.  No one is permitted to eat any product while in production and can only eat in a designated area, we are a certified facility.   We asked that you contact Macys because the outer box looked damaged and we sometimes find out that the shipper pulled contents out of the box.  Also,was there anything else inside the (shipping carton) beside the slip/and candy box?  bubble, craft paper? Or just the packing slip and candy box? I will gladly send another box to you if you still like.  I understand that you feel that someone ate the product, but if the package was shrunk, they just did not place it in the unfinished pile.  We hope you can understand and apologize for any inconvenience. This chocolate is a chocolate lovers dream! Visited husband's family in PA this weekend and they insisted since I love chocolate to stop in! I can't say enough good things about the experience. The owner was in the shop and the hospitality was impeccable! She explained all the different items and let me sample some goodies before buying. She explained all their must haves which lets be honest, its everything cause the quality is on par with all your chocolatey dreams! She broke down their history and gave us some great insight to her families business. I cannot believe I've gone this long not knowing who they are. They ship everywhere so you better believe this Maryland girl will be getting her monthly fix shipped! Did I mention they make their own peanut butter! My God, excellent! I received a box of Betsy Ann chocolates as a gift for Easter. The box came in 2 layers with cheap plastic trays. The majority were milk chocolate with a few dark. The appearance was dull and lackluster, indicative of an industrial process. The dark chocolates had a variety of flavors, but these were all overshadowed by the signature flavor of acetone and cocoa powder. Trying these reminded me of why most Americans prefer milk chocolate over dark: the flavor was utterly reprehensible. I did not finish a single bite. The milk chocolate ganache and shell were cloyingly sweet and with a sickening texture that should not be found in quality chocolate, but at least edible unlike the dark variety. One variety included caramel, which was akin to the caramel found in a candy bar like twix rather than anything resembling a homemade caramel, i.e. sickeningly sweet with a sticky texture. The only chocolates I ended up finishing were the oreo variety - the oreo pieces work well with the sweetness of the milk chocolate ganache, and while not exactly a high-brow dessert the combination is tasty. The price charged for these chocolates is absolutely criminal given the quality, which is unfortunately extremely common in chocolates. For a similar price you can get non-industrially produced chocolates made from Guittard or Valrhona (both great bean-to-bar chocolates that come in a variety of chocolate origins) and fresh cream. Finding quality chocolates is surprisingly difficult - I won't provide specific recommendations for high end chocolates here, but in general there are three primary things to look for: 1) Quality chocolatiers like to talk about their chocolate. They'll either explicitly state the brand they use (Guittard and Valrhona are the most common among top pastry chefs, but there are a number of niche brands that are of equal or higher quality, like Cluizel, Amedei, or Domori. Callebaut can also be found in decent chocolates, but is of lower quality), or more commonly advertise the origin and process of their chocolate (e.g. trinitario beans from Santo Domingo that are carefully winowed and lightly roasted), 2) Top chocolatiers use fresh cream and fewer or no preservatives. The ingredients for the dark/milk chocolate should be in parentheses and include up to 6 ingredients: chocolate, cocoa butter, sugar, soy lecithin, vanilla, and milk powder. Cocoa powder is a huge red flag and implies all of the flavor has been processed out, and artificial flavor implies artificial vanilla (vanillin) found in cheap chocolate. Preservatives may be used in good chocolates, but are much more pervasive in poor quality ones - a huge red flag is propylene glycol. Likewise, invertase and glucose are commonly used to increase shelf life, but degrade quality. And, 3) Low quality chocolate usually over-relies on descriptions of the tasting process and usually sounds like a broken record of the words "creamy", "decadent", "rich", and "sinful". They may also rely on trendy certifications like gluten-free/vegan (which is true of virtually all chocolates) and "fair trade" (quality chocolate origins are always purchased for far above the fungible market price, e.g. Chuao is purchased for approximately 4x normal market value despite not having a fair-trade certification). The people who purchased this as a gift for me are aware that I am a connoisseur of chocolate (i.e. a snob), but ultimately got these because it is exceedingly difficult to determine the quality of chocolate from advertising and reviews. I hope that this review makes people aware that there are far superior products out there for similar prices and how to identify them. read more

Betsy Ann Chocolates are our family favorites! The chocolate is *so* good, and the Dark Chocolate is not bitter, it is great! My personal favorites are the Chocolate covered Cherries and Strawberries (make sure you eat that over a plate, it's messy, but very worth it). All of their candy is excellent, and my kids all say that they would rather have a small bunny from Betsy Ann for Easter than a bunch of chocolate from somewhere else. They were featured on a Food Channel and WQED special a few years ago, and everyone has always been very nice and helpful there. The parking lot is small, so you may need to plan ahead to stop in near a holiday, and right on the bend of Rt. 19 coming down the hill into West View, but it is definitely worth stopping in. Also, they do fundraisers with the local schools - you can't go wrong buying anything from them. read more

They also suggest YOU have them shipped from Betsy Ann on a Monday, Now wouldn't you think Betsy Ann would ship them to southern states on Mondays? How can you control when they'll ship them. Shame on you Betsy Ann. We traveled a great distance to purchase cordial strawberries. These confections were literally made with slivers of strawberries. Outrageous. Wonderful because of the freshness of the confections in the boutique candy shop .Dangerous because it is close enough to my house that I often here the dark choco covered raisins calling me. Horrible, horrible experience. My family purchased chocolate covered pretzels for me for Mother's Day 2015. When I opened the factory-sealed package, i realized there was no nutrition information provided. I thought all packages needed to provide that, especially since it was factory sealed. Upon eating some of the pretzels, I realized they tasted stale. I noticed that the "best by" sticker stated 6/30/2015. But upon closer inspection of the package, the 6/30/15 sticker was covering up another sticker. When i lifted the sticker up, the original sticker was best by 1/31/15!! No wonder the pretzels tasted stale!! To add insult to injury, when I called Betsy Ann corporate to notify them of the problems, the customer service person, Nikki, seemed like she could care less. She could not get me off the phone fast enough. No apologies were given, just that I could return the box to where they were purchased for a refund. This was a gift! What a great thing to tell my family. I like to support local businesses, so will stick with Sarris chocolates in the future. I have NEVER had any problems with their products and their customer service is definitely better than what I experienced with Betsy Ann. read more
