The Moderno salad -- with cherries, cured beef, pine nuts, and goat cheese -- was flavorful, though the espresso vinaigrette unfortunately tasted more like straight vinegar than espresso. I had the short rib bolognese and it was absolutely delicious. Others at the table ordered the Funghi pasta with creamy white sauce, which was good but could have used a bit more mushroom flavor. The Toscana chicken breast (bone-in) with sun-dried tomato sauce had that perfect "marry me" flavor -- rich and satisfying. For dessert, we had the Plate chocolate cake with raspberry and pistachios. It was a huge slice, with a rich chocolate flavor. So why not five stars? Despite having reservations, we were seated right by the kitchen where servers pick up food. Made more annoying because the restaurant had a lot of empty booths and tables in the main dining room. The upside was that the pizza ovens kept us warm, but it wasn't the most relaxing spot. There were also a couple billing issues: the tip was calculated on the post-tax total rather than pre-tax. Also our prix fixe dinners included dessert and we opted to upgrade to a different dessert from the menu. Oddly the up-charge was $6, even though the menu price difference was only $3. That said, Plate offers delicious, well-priced food (though the drinks are on the expensive side), and it's still a great choice for Italian food in Kansas City

There were boxes of wine everywhere and that bothered me. It really threw off the vibe. I was seated right away, and my waiter, Chris, was friendly. He walked me through their extensive menu of wines and even recommended a few. I decided to try a sweet wine flight, and he tried to warn me that it was very sweet, but I didn't listen. The flight was super sweet. There wasn't a single one that I enjoyed. Chris did recommend another wine, Fragolino, and I loved it. I could've drank it all day. I wanted a bottle of it to go, but sadly, they were out. Hopefully, when I return, it will be in stock. Next visit, I'll go with something not so sweet.

Our server was super chill and helpful at suggesting wines. We got 2 reds that were a little on the sweeter side which was great because I want to get more into reds but they're usually too dry or too sweet and these were perfect. We didn't get any food since we were heading to eat afterwards. But the menu looked like it was pretty decent. We'll definitely have to come back to try it. I really enjoyed that the owner was there and working. The extra care for the company shows in how well it's kept! Overall, I definitely suggest you check it out. Super cute for a quick date night like we did, a girls night or just to check it out.

We were seated on time at a table next to the bar-side of the dining room. Speaking of the dining room, it's a nice, if standard size for a strip-mall space, but I really appreciated that the tables were not stacked on top of each other, as seems to be the case at more and more places these days. It felt like there might be some chance of our entire conversation not being completely overheard by our neighbors, which was nice for a change! Our waitress was fantastic! She walked us through the menu, the restaurant's approach to cooking and seasonality, some of her faves, and made wonderful recommendations! We decided to split a few small plates, which was a great approach! We got to try about 1/3 of the small plate menu, and loved it all! It was all great, but the Black Cardamom Burnt Ends are NOT to be missed! It made my cardamom-loving, Midwest soul very, very happy indeed! The space is a really nice size - not massive or overwhelming - and with the shades drawn down (to seal out the late afternoon sun, thank goodness!) and dim lighting, the mood vibes were solid for a romantic anniversary dinner! The other ambiance item of note is that the restroom corridor smelled absolutely fantastic! Upon investigation, it was due to a burning candle from a lovely local-KC company that was custom made for the restaurant! Yes, they're for sale, and yes, we picked up two! While everything was lovely and the food was very good, you're definitely paying a high price for it. Not that it's not deserved, but the "value" feels aren't necessarily "off the charts", by any means. And that is really my only critique, if there is any at all! Food = 5/5 Facility = 4/5 Service = 5/5 Ambiance = 4/5 Value = 3/5

They also had a live band, which actually you couldn't even hear if you were sitting far away from them which was nice because it was like light background music! Food wise I got the spaghetti with meatballs and wow the meatballs were fantastic! I was impressed. I was not expecting them to be that good! My friend got the Caesar salad, which had one anchovy in it, which was kind of gross tbh lol like why are we putting anchovies in salad?! Odd choice. However the rest of the salad tasted great! We also got the burrata appetizer which was pretty decent but it came with like twice as much cheese as bread sticks so we were able to ask for more sticks but would prefer it just came with more in general because there is a lottttt of cheese! Finally we got the flourless chocolate cake which we were slightly disappointed with only because it was hard as a rock. Usually those are a little more airy. Overall, nice vibe and solid place!

I have a gluten allergy, and it turned into a frustrating back-and-forth with our waitress trying to figure out what I could and couldn't eat. Instead of confidently checking with the kitchen, there was a lot of uncertainty and assumptions about what I "probably" couldn't have. I even asked if there was someone more familiar with the menu I could speak to, but the responses were still very unclear. It made what should've been a simple process feel unnecessarily stressful. On a positive note, the seating was really nice. We had a great spot that worked well for a first date, and I did enjoy the low-lit ambiance. Once we finally received our food and drinks, parts of the meal were enjoyable. The standout for me was definitely the lamb meatballs they were flavorful and well cooked and looked veggies with them. I also tried muscles for the first time and they were really good. Drinks were also good. That said, my pasta was pretty bland, and overall, the menu didn't offer many gluten-free options despite what I had seen while researching beforehand. As someone who prioritizes places with solid gluten-free choices, this was disappointing. Overall, while there were a few highlights, the lack of menu clarity, limited options, and underwhelming flavors mean it's just not somewhere I'd go out of my way to visit again.
