Met up with a group of colleagues here for happy hour. Located in downtown Mountain View. I was able to find free street parking a block away. Stepped inside to a dark, old school, divey irish pub. Huh, who'd a thunk this would be in downtown Mountain View. Rest of my group was already there at a high top. There were different parts of the bar, for different groups: the singles or doubles sitting at the bar, the group playing pool and the large group in the back. The high top was perfect for our group of 5. Our group was drinking a variety of items, IPAs, hard liquor and I kept it simple with the house chardonnay. Good spot to chit-chat and watch some sports. I didn't catch the prices of drinks (someone else picked up the tab). We did have to go to the bar to place our orders and bring it back. BUT, they were great about stopping by our table to pick up empty glasses. It was a Happy Hour (or two), so mission accomplished. read more

One night, my friends and I headed to Zen for a bday party, Zen was a quarter full, and nobody was on the dance floor. they also played music that was to fit a 30's crowd. Then we stepped outside and found ourselves going into Molly Magee's. The whole night changed from there! The dance floor was packed! the bar was busy and everyone was having the greatest time. The DJ was awesome and they mix it up with electro beats that makes you want to dance. This has got to be Mountain View's best bar. Only because it's impossible to give a negative rating here. The place has horrible service - the bouncers and the staff here have way too much attitude as if it's their house party and they are hosting everyone for free. People pay entree free here and shouldn't be treated so badly. They definitely need to teach their staff some manners - if nothing else atleast basic manners on how to treat other people. I came here on the Friday after "bar"-none the worst week of my professional life. Not bad enough to warrant bad puns, but pretty effin bad. I don't really drink anymore, and I've NEVER drank to forget about my problems, but this week warranted me getting home after work, only working a lil on side projects (a man's gotta finish his next hair metal album after all - @catnipandtherenegade on spotify), and then driving myself to this place. I'm like 30-60% Irish, so when I moved to Mountain View, this became my top of the list spot for places-to-check-out should-I-ever-need-a-beer. I'm still thankful I made that list, because I NEEDED a a beer (yea, I only had one, drinking and driving is no joke). My brother and I arrive, and this huge man in a heavy metal kilt (you read that right) stamps our wrist. I am a large man, but this man was like me + 50 lbs of heavy metal and beer and chains and savagery. Very nice guy. So I sit at the bar, and of course you've got the whole gamut. Couple of guys who don't wanna see their wives just yet after a long day, a lot of tech workers, and then a few groups of friends just chopping it up at the tables. It honestly pains me that I am one of the tech workers, because the bar tender was boys, and he probably thought I wasn't. My brother gets a Guinness because "we're in an Irish bar and we're Irish", but I opt for a foods light because "this is America , and I can't drink beer with too much flavor". We see a bartender rotation, and this like straight up outrageous, awesome bartender comes into the fray. I can't describe what she looks like without probably coming across as disrespectful, so I'm not gonna, but she looked hecka cool. Very much about it. Bathroom had the normal trough set up where you can fit 2 boys on it, or 3 MEN, and there were no paper towels, which was kinda whack. People of colored skin should completely avoid this place. They discriminate. We arrived there at 10pm, a group of 4 dressed in a neat costume. The bouncer at the door asked us to pay a 10$ cover at the gate. However, the lady at coatcheck was haughty and rude and said we should pay 15$ because it's after 10pm. We didn't think much of it, paid her the amount, and moved on. My friend is currently fighting cancer and had brought in a bottle of watermelon water which he requested to be kept at the coatcheck. In about ten mins, he went back to take a sip because he was feeling a little tired. In parallel, we went to get drinks for ourselves. When my friend didn't return for a bit, his sister went to check what happened. When she didn't return, I went to check what had happened. When I got there I see that both my friend and his sister were standing outside the bar. I went to check what happened and was told that they can't come in because the coat check lady doesn't want them in. I personally went back to the coat check lady to apologize and clear any misunderstanding that may have occurred.I explained to her that when someone is going through treatment for cancer you have a few good days far in between. We were celebrating our friends' courage and didn't mean to bother anyone there. She refused to listen and was adamant/ arrogant about the refusal. I walked out to chat with the bouncer again (he was standing to block my friends from entering), again no sense of understanding, Finally, I turned to go in to get my husband out but a bouncer felt he needed to shove his body against me to stop me from entering this time. He was arrogant, rude, and downright disrespectful. If I ever see him in a public place during the day, I will walk up to him and ask whether he has any idea how to treat women. Because if he needs some tips, I sure can help! Later I heard the clincher from my friend- He was explicitly told that if he has cancer and he can't buy a drink he shouldn't be there. Oh and in all of this, I forgot to tell you- they kept our 60$ because we spent 10 mins in their bar before they threw us out. We had to leave our drinks too. And the one night we were planning to make memorable for a friend is now memorable for the most hurtful reason. I understand the management only cares about profit and based on the single star reviews I've seen of this place right now - discrimination against color is a common theme for them. Here is a business oriented way to think for you--- you're located in California, a state known for being accepting of all colors. There is a large immigrant population that lives in Bay Area. This place discriminates against medical condition & people of colour. Last night, my brother, I & his friends went to Molly MaGees. Since my brother is battling cancer, he cannot drink alcohol or any sweetened drinks & also avoids outside water (how safe can the water at a speakeasy be). For this reason he carried a small bottle of unsweetened watermelon juice for rehydration. The discrimination began at the entrance itself. When we were entering the place, the security people at the door told us the entry is 10$ per pax. But "Grace", who sat at the entry to stamp each guest, told us it's 15 $ per pax. We paid without arguing although it sounded unfair. At the time of entry, my brother requested "Grace" to hold the bottle of juice for him & explained his condition. To which, she rudely remarked, "I'll put it at the back, someone might throw it." She also told him to stand in the entry line each time he needed to have a sip. My brother is a very peaceful & polite person, he just shook his head in dismay & walked inside to us & narrated what happened. So, I went back to "Grace" & explained that my brother was battling cancer & it would mean a lot if she could hold just that bottle of juice for him. She told me that "he'll have to come in the entry line to have the juice", the entry line was long & would've taken him standing in it for 10-15 mins each time. So, I requested again & said the same to her, since all my brother wanted was to have a good time with us, but given his cancer & the limited energy he has, he wouldn't have been able to stand in that line each time just to have a sip and he couldn't drink anything at all at the bar. To this "Grace" retorted, "Then maybe he shouldn't be here!". I thought I heard her wrong & tried to clarify if that's what she said & meant, she repeated the same thing. By this time, my brother came there & heard the conversation. He was very hurt by what she said & only softly said to her "this is no way to treat someone who's unwell", and asked me let it be & get inside. At this time, "Grace" came in front of us from where she'd been sitting & asked us to leave from the bar since she had found my brother's tone "threatening". Even the security personnel, including "Anthony" who said he was the head of security, agreed that this step was a bit much. But they couldn't get us back in, although he agreed to get our money back. But later, after having a conversation with "Grace", he told us that the money couldn't be refunded either. Meanwhile, my brother's friends had come out & his friend "Ritika" went & apologised to "Grace" for any miscommunication, since all we'd wanted was to have a good time with my brother & apologising seemed to be the best way. But "Grace" told "Ritika" that "your friends had too much attitude & I don't care about your apology. I won't let them in." So even though "Grace" had been discriminatory & rude to us, we were thrown out of Molly MaGees, since she felt my brother shouldn't be there. Some of the security staff was extremely rude to our friend "Ritika", to the extent of trying to intimidate her physically. It's the best dive bar with a dance floor in Mountain View, which isn't saying much. Good beer. There's usually a line between midnight and 12:30. Be prepared to accept a wait if you come then. In the past several months, there has started to be additional unlisted criteria to getting in beyond the presence of a line. For instance, don't try your luck after 1 AM, even when the line has died down. Last call is around 1:30, but if the guy at the door decides not to let you in and explain a "policy" instead, tough luck. Really comes off as if the guys at the door really don't want anyone in there of my kind. Compare this to Patio, who stops charging a cover around 1 AM and it actually becomes easier for thirsty patrons to enter, not harder. They've done various other steps at the door too which I won't go into further detail on, (and raised the entrance fee from $6 to $7), but those minor annoyances were generally attributable to heightened security. Anyway it's a hassle to enter this place, but I'll change my review if it seems easier to get in in the next couple months. Worst customer services ever. Avoid this place as much as you can. Happen to be in Mountain view area on Thursday night with girlfriend and wanted to have a drink at 1:15 am at this place. Since they were going to close at 1:30 am I though they will let us in to get our drink ,while in my surprise the bouncer told me that we have to pay the full night cover charge!!! I was like why?!! I'm a regular here because of the chill vibe and fun dance nights on Friday and Saturday nights. The drinks are decent but the DJs aren't as good as they used to be. These are what I call "iTunes DJs" -- rather than actually mixing songs together, one song should be over but everyone on the dance floor is always waiting way too long for the next song to begin. You can tell by the awkward sway everyone is doing to kill time before the next beats drop. I used to love coming here for nonstop dancing. The party crowd is super mixed. There are always some chill people, but there are also some creepers on the dance floor. Same as any other club, I suppose. Folks of all ages and backgrounds. And let me tell you, all the varying levels of social awkwardness are present too! You know, a real one!! Not the watered down cups we kept getting. The prices were at dive bar standards but the drinks definitely were not. And for some reason when I think dive bar, I think pleasant social bartenders because you could potentially be a regular, but no, not here. It was pleasant hearing songs we grew up to but not too great being nudged in the bum by some girl's head cuz she was bending that far over to stick her own ass deep in her partners crotch. Thankfully, I was with the girls who roll with it and make it fun no matter what. So, of course, we poked fun and danced wide to make some room for our party to get down. Still a regular here every time I am in downtown MV, but I am sometimes hesitant when they charge cover. Try to come by and get a stamp before they start charging cover, which is usually by 9 or 9:30 on Fri and Sats. Crowd can be a hit or miss, but environment is always fun. So basically we had $13 cash and a bunch of quarters and cover was $7. The lady at the cash counter wasn't very clear in giving us directions and gave us the impression we could pay with card. However, she meant we could buy drinks inside with card but had to pay cash in order to get in. Don't know why this is the case, OPAL takes card even for cover. When we asked her to take our quarters she said she "didn't like quarters" (last time I checked, quarters are legal currency too?) and asked us to get money from the ATM (probably to make even more money off of us). We happened to just go outside and ask a random dude to exchange our quarters for $1. Also the DJ kept censoring music like it was high school prom and that was a little weird considering you have to be 21+ to get in. I did enjoy the chill "bar" not "club" but still had dancing atmosphere, and the music they played. The drinks were pretty good. The Reyka Mule is a sweet version of a Moscow Mule. I do think they need to fix their cover system and have more of a clear communication with their customers, and also not censor their music, but that's pretty much it. read more

100th Yelp Review! Molly's will forever have a special place in my heart because it is where my love and I had our first date almost three years ago. So I decided to dedicate my 100th Yelp review to Molly MaGees. We have been here numerous times over the years. During the day and during the early evening hours, it is a cool to place to just relax, have a drink, and catch up with friends without the crowds. Prices are pretty reasonable compared to other bars in the area. My SO usually gets a beer, they have a wide variety on tap usually, and I usually get a mixed drink of some sort. At night time during the weekends, they have a cover charge of $10. On the weekends, there is DJ that plays a variety of music from old school to current hits and everything in between. The dance floor is a very small area and it gets very hot very fast there. However, there is an outdoor patio with a separate bar to cool off. This is where we usually hang out because there are a few tables and chairs out on the patio as well. The bouncers are usually very good. They will not hesitate to kick someone out who looks too drunk or is bothering too many people. Parking isn't usually too bad in downtown Mountain View. You can usually find a space either in a free parking garage or on the street. The downside I can think of is that they do not sell food at all, just drinks, so make sure you come thirsty! If you are looking for some nightlife without the night club scene in Mountain View, I would recommend checking out Molly's. Guaranteed a great time! read more

I always heard that Molly MaGee's gets busy on the weekends. I wanted to see for myself how busy it gets so last weekend I wasn't working the nightlife like I usually do decided to come out and hang out with my fellow DJ that was spinning that night DJ Menace. The crowd was differently different from where I am use to in San Jose, but the thing I really like about the crowd there is that everyone minds their own business. Which puts me in a place where I can to be who I want to be without anyone judging. The security were extremely nice. They different are aware of their surrounds and the crowd. If they notice you are a bit too intoxicated they stopped you from drinking. To others this maybe be a party pooper action but the next day, you'll thank them for it. The bartender was sweet and definitely helpful evening during times of great stress and craziness. The music selection, for that night, definitely hit me at the right spot. So, I get off of work at Midnight on technically Friday morning and I'm hungry. I'm checking Yelp and see St. Stephen's Green in MountainView. They're open til 1:30am, have beer and a Lamb Burger. I'm very intrigued. So I head down to Castro street and see the only place open..the only Irish place open at that. That must be it! Nope, it was Molly Magees. I remember babysitting my old dumbass drunk friends here at Molly's while they got turned down by broads ‍and almost started fights with Security ‍a decade or so ago. The place is the same as it was then. Crappy beer, the same exact Mac Dre songs playing, blah looking women‍ who are entertaining these loser guys‍ with boring, basic bitch conversation, and bored Security Goons‍. I paid $5 for what equates to a pat down by Security‍ to get in to a place I didn't ever want to go back to. So..what the hell, I'm here, I'm still hungry. I'll fill my stomach with beer then! I take a seat at the bar and I'm waiting for either of the 2 male bartenders to notice I'm waiting here. The older, white bartender is flirting with a group of guys and the other young, Mexican one is on the other side...ok. Tell me why there's 2..3..4..6 security goons and 2 people taking the entry fee and giving stamps?! There's all of these staff standing around and I can't get a beer at the bar?!?! So after an eternity of about 5 minutes watch those awful music videos, the Mexican bartender finally noticed me. Hey, I'm only the best looking m@=/%!&*:÷×(] in here. How could you not see me??? Coincidentally, Molly's has the same Red Ale I would've ordered at St. Stephen's has I made it there. Smithwick's Irish Red Ale..unimpressive, not much flavor, and at $8.25..Meh!!! So I'm drinking my beer. These 2 black kids show up..must've had fake I.D.'s? These guys are behind me but to my right side. One of them..breath smells like s@#* The Mexican bartender takes their order, and a few minutes later returns with 2 glasses of Modelo. Apparently, that was the wrong order? They ordered some sissy, fruity, fizzy drinks in a can called White Claw..?? ..What starts with P and ends with ussies? AHAHAHA!!! I finish my beer. Then I'm waiting another eternity of 5 minutes. This time I see a Brown Ale..pooh, this has to be better that the red ale right? Nope, has a small lingering aftertaste but basically the same..and again at $8.25. So I get half way through drinking my 2nd and and last beer when this weird, drunk, white guy shows up and trys to to get me to drink out of his glas... whatever IPA he was drinking. 1. I don't drink out of dudes glasses. 2. I don't drink out of strangers glasses. 3. IPA's and light beers are f*&^=÷ awful! I hate them! 4. This was very unsolicited encounter. He's some drunk guy whose trying to talk to me about the beer menu..eventually he wanders off somewhere..I finished my half a beer quickly and decided even though I was only there 30 minutes..between the crappy, overpriced beer, bad music, meh service, weird, drunk, white guy, and the pat down from Security‍..that was enough action for 1 night. Great dancing ("Urbano Latino" music last Friday night) which seems to pick up around 10:30PM. This isn't one of those bars where it's hard to get a bartender's attention, which I appreciate! Its a rocking pub on Castro. Every one out there should be rated a 5-Star for their customer satisfaction, smiling faces and welcoming gestures for the pub's guests. The pub is an Irish pub like one next to it, Stephen something... the drinks and the services are far better at Molly Magees. For instance, we had ordered the same drink, Jameson and Ginger ale, at Stephen and yesterday at Molly Magees, the latter's (Molly) drink taste and proportion was exactly what we wanted. My old haunt!! So many happy memories and fun evenings here. Was here again recently for a friend's bday party. Had a blast!

I've been coming here for years. If you come on a weeknight and get a good bartender like Will, it can be a lot of fun. The Good: - Good selection of whiskeys and Wednesday's half off prices are good. The Bad: - No food is served. - Some bartender's pours are short. - Can get noisy and crowded. The Ugly: - Come here on a Thursday or weekend day and you are treated to a team of over-sized and very rude "Security" goons at the doors that make you feel unwelcome and subject to discipline if you don't give them a proper salute. It took me several minutes to pass the door the other night, as they carded me for the second time and questioned me (I'm 54 years old), and put ink stamps on my arm twice in the same evening. They argued with me when I asked to have my palm stamped instead, saying my sweaty palms will make the ink go away (tragedy, for sure). I resent having a big ink stamp punched on my arm - like they do at say...a college frat party of concert venue - have some class Mollies! I won't be coming back due to the ugly. Divey bar located on Castro. They have a very strict policy about people only being in the establishment if you're 21 and over. They had a bouncer going around checking everyone's IDs and giving you stamps, even for those people that weren't drinking. The drinks here are pretty basic - I ordered a moscow mule and it was super watered down and it didn't look like they had any unique beers on tap. Our group stayed here for only 20 minutes or so before moving on to the next place. If you're looking for a place to get a buzz on real quick through some relatively cheap shots, this is the place for you, otherwise I probably wouldn't bother. read more
