Haven't been to SSG since I used to work downtown but saw that Molly's next door was tapping Pliny the Younger so after having that, I I had to go back to get their chicken curry fries. Nothing has changed with this place, for the better, just your typical irish pub. Guinness on tap and perfectly poured. TV's to show the games. Curry fries just as good as I remember. They have a happy hour too and super happy hour so things are a bit cheaper. Classic place and I'm glad that nothing has changed. read more

Came to St. Stephen's Green on a trivia night, and I have to say--the trivia itself was really fun. The questions were engaging, the energy in the room was lively, and it made for a great group activity. If you're into bar trivia, it's definitely a solid spot for that. That said, the service left a bit of a sour note for us. When our group first arrived, we hadn't ordered immediately since we were still getting settled, and we were told pretty bluntly that we needed to order or leave. I completely understand that it's a business and especially on a busy trivia night they need tables turning and drinks flowing--but the way it was communicated felt impatient and a bit rude. Once things got going, the atmosphere was fun and upbeat, but the initial interaction made it hard to fully relax and enjoy the night. Popped into St. Stephens for a quick pint of Guinness and was happy with it. Proper glass, proper pour, and a nice creamy refreshing pint. There is lots of seating outside in the street since the main road is closed to cars. Inside, there is a big bar with plenty of tables throughout the space and lots of TVs, making it an easy spot to watch a game. The vibe inside felt a little quiet when we were there. A few people were on laptops and there was not much conversation, so it felt more mellow than lively. Service was great. Kind, quick, and easy. One of my favorite pubs on the Peninsula and definitely a place on my list when I am in Mt. View. I remember going their regularly in the 90s. Besides the big LCD TVs, it remains the same. It still feels like a place where locals go. After trying to walk off fried calamari, burgers and beers, me and a buddy decided to have another beer at SSG. Nice. I hadn't been there in a little while and it was a reminder to keep it fresh in the memory bank. We got to catch up for a while and talk about days gone by. This really should be a higher rating for the food, but because of serious service issues I have to knock this down a notch. A group of six of us came here on the day of the German Christmas market. We originally intended to pick up some Wurst or Schnitzel at the market, but the lines were really long and we thought we could get a quicker meal in a more comfortable environment by walking down Castro a bit. We came across this place, and while it wasn't the Teutonic fare that we had planned to eat the menu seemed interesting. Though Castro was quite crowded with people, there was ample seating when we arrived shortly after 1pm. We had our choice of tables and scrounged up a couple menus. There are certainly a lot of Irish and British choices with a few outliers (e.g. fish tacos and a quinoa bowl), and we made our selections carefully, then waited for someone to come take our order. And that was a problem. There was only a single server working the entire dining room, and she had to clear tables, take orders, and deliver food and drinks to the customers. After a good long while (over 15 minutes after sitting down), I approached the server to let her know that we were ready to place our order. She was very sweet and apologized, but it still took a while for her to make it to our table. We placed our order and she disappeared into the dining area, which was starting to fill up quite quickly. We chatted and watched some of the games on the many televisions as we waited for our food to arrive. But that was another very long wait. In the end, it was well over an hour from when we entered to our meals to land on our table. But the food was very good. I got the Guinness steak pie which had a nice flaky top crust and was filled with large tender chunks of steak and served with a side of fresh steamed vegetables and mashed potatoes. The gravy was rich and flavorful with a hint of malt from the beer. I had the opportunity to try the jumbo Irish breakfast roll, which was also quite good. We shared a side of lemon almond Brussels sprouts which was crispy and flavorful, but I missed the opportunity to sample the Scotch eggs that looked fantastic and received glowing reviews from my companions. The fish tacos got a bit of a meh reception from the person who ordered it. By the time we left, we had spent over two hours at the restaurant. It was a good opportunity to catch up, but we were quite famished when we arrived (especially the two people who had run a 15k race earlier in the day) and we would have preferred faster service. But this was certainly not the fault of the lone server on the floor. Despite the crowd, she kept her composure and was always smiling. We gave her a hefty tip for her hard work. I put the blame on the restaurant manager for not having more staff both in the front and back of the house. Would I come back again? Probably, if I know in advance that I have the time to spend here. After all, I still need to try those Scotch eggs. read more

We had discovered this place during the Mountain View Taste event and loved the shepherd's pie and the cozy vibe, so my friend planned a surprise birthday dinner for me here. Sadly, the nice ambiance pretty much ended at the entrance. The shepherd's pie was still incredible--honestly, one of the best I've ever had. But the curry chicken wasn't our thing at all. It was way too sweet for our taste. Maybe that's how it's meant to be, considering it's an Irish pub, but still, it didn't work for us. To be fair, they let us change the dish without charging extra, which we appreciated. The portions were big and hot, so food-wise we were fine. But the AC in our section wasn't on. It was there, just not running. We had to ask for it to be turned on, which felt unnecessary in the middle of summer--it was hot and stuffy until then. Service was pretty slow. Our server was nice, but he spent way too much time chatting at the bar. One of our beers sat there for 10 minutes while he talked, and my friend ended up grabbing it herself. And the biggest disappointment? The surprise cake. We were just stepping outside for a breath of fresh air and were planning to come right back. But the server ran after us and said, "Wait! I'm bringing the birthday cake!" So... that was the surprise. Ruined. And yep, I was the birthday girl. From New York and new to town and walked into Stephens on a trivia night which was a great gem to find in downtown Mountain View. Food and service were super welcoming. 4/3/2025 St. Stephen's Green 223 Castro St Mountain View, CA 94041 I went there on a Thursday afternoon to try their Happy Hour. The Happy Hour menu is extensive and includes the Fish and Chips. It's at the north end of Castro St. with standard city lots or parking structures nearby. The interior had the dim, cozy pub feeling similar to my experiences in the UK. Since I was a single I sat at the bar and ordered the Fish & Chips and an Oakland stout from the Super Happy Hour menu. The beer was about a half pint and very smooth and tasty. My food was brought to me by one of the kitchen staff. The filet was huge on a generous bed of fries. The thicker part my fish was extra crispy and when it got cold was hard as a rock. The fish itself appears to be frozen, some parts were flaky and some parts mushy. The Happy Hour was an okay value but I would try something else a next time. Definitely would not get the Fish & Chips again. read more

From the moment you walk up, he greets you with a warm smile and a genuinely friendly attitude that immediately makes you feel welcome. I mentioned that I enjoy wine and described the types I usually like, and Sosa offered me two tastings that fit my preferences perfectly -- and he was absolutely right. What really stands out is that I don't even go there often, yet he remembers me every time -- including my wine preferences. I've taken two different people there on separate occasions, and each visit has been just as welcoming and spot-on. Service like that is rare and truly appreciated. I have been in teh bay area for a long time. My friends and I love coming here for a beer or two, music and sometimes some fried chicken tenders. in the past I had nothing but great experience until last week. I came with a couple of friends as usual, sat down, and Giovanni took our order, it was trivia night, I believe so they were expecting a lot of people. I gave my table to a larger group and moved to smaller one. People came after us ordered food, got their food, drink ect. We waited and waited nothing. Oh we did get our drinks which one of them was very BAD, tasted like water/lemon juice. So I decided to check on our food, asked one of the waiter who had me speaking to the manager. I wish I can recall her name but she was very mean, rude, and not professional at all. She called Giovanni who came to our table with a nasty attitute trying to justifying the delay in out order. I had explained to him it was not right that everyone who came after us already had their food including chicken tenders. The manager was also with him and had shown us an order number with the time stamp of our order stating that some items will take longer vs others but I happend to ordered chicken tenter which was orderd by others. Giovanni responed in very mean/nasty tone " Well, what do you want from me? I don't want to argue" my response was " What? are you serious, all we wanted was the our food ontime or not be the last person served". He continued on by saying"well, it will come soon but if you want I just cancel it but I am not goingto be arguing with you". I can go on with their responses from both the manager and him so you can understand how inpolite and unprofessional they both were. I even had to walked to the bar to pay my bill because he never came back to take my card. Of course I know the bartender who by the way recognized me and has always been very nice and easy going. He tried to apologize and asked if there is anything he can do, so I asked him for the another manager's name as I really think this is not acceptable. However, the lady( manager that day) refused disclose anything. Again, I think them two should not be working with people as they don't have people skills. I live Stephen and this was teh first time having such a bad and unpleasenat beahvior. Great first experience, stopped by before the Niner game and Mr Sosa was wonderful. It's rare when a server/bartender greets you then tells you he's fairly new and he'll do the best he can with their menu, Its so frequent that most workers just try to sell you anything and just say yeah that's good and move on. He mentioned what he's had and items customers have given great feedback on, fast service and super friendly and definitely kept my husbands energy up with all that football talk. We have come to this bar several times to eat outside, primarily during happy hour. One problem we've encountered is that during the colder months, they had very few heaters, and we often left because it was so chilly outside. But that aside, and skipping the worst Bloody Mary I've ever had (actually returned it), this is a fun place for a casual meal in good weather! Food-wise, they have an eclectic menu - smoked salmon on Irish soda bread (delicious), the largest fried fish I've ever seen and chicken curry that was good, not great. I'm giving it 5 stars just for the show I saw there. My son took me for the Mother's Day Brunch. It was spectacular and the most fun I've had in a Drag Show. The dancers were beautiful, brilliant and very talented. The Shirley Temple that was given to us was also pretty good. The food was just okay. The saving grace was that it wasn't too expensive. Kristen made a monthly luncheon I have with a friend most enjoyable. We went for their special $12. meal, ordering the Caesar Chicken Wrap sandwich with a side of steak fries. The meal was memorable and their steak fries are, in our opinion, the VERY best on Castro Street. My friend and I, both senior citizens, have been going up and down Castro Street, trying as many restaurants as we can, to broaden our culinary horizons. We've made it a point to compare the fries of every establishment, given the opportunity. St. Stephen's Green meals are both appealing to the eye and excellent in quality, all the way around. When my friend and I saw Kristen delivering orders to the tables of other patrons, we made mental notes about what we can order on future visits. With the prices at $12 or thereabouts for many items, going here won't be just as a treat. I highly recommend St. Steven's Green for any day, and even for a quick meal to go. The first time we went here, it was on a weekend, for their Full Irish Breakfast - it was memorable! I will start by saying that the server was excellent. Very attentive, and friendly(tipped him well), but my Gin and Tonic's were the most unusual, and strange tasting I have experienced. I did search, and found that the syrup used is Dugan & Dame tonic which requires that it be mixed with club soda in order to provide the "fizzy" element to the drink. They did not add anything fizzy, which meant it was Gin and the syrup. Bartenders should know that a Gin and Tonic requires, a bubbly tonic or club soda. Please make sure they know to add this the next time a patron orders it. Otherwise, I have enjoyed my many visits to St Stephens, and would recommend it. read more

Was in Mountain View for my wife's piano recital on Sunday (6/9). Decided to try out St Stephen's Green out of a whole slew of options. The lamb burger caught my eye. My low rating was solely because of the food. The ambiance and staff were top notch. The greeter went above and beyond what one would expect from a greeter, inviting us into the establishment. Our server, Samantha was very attentive. My son had the Kobe burger. He tells me it was ok, but nothing out of the ordinary. My wife had the Chipotle lime chicken salad. Again ok, but nothing out of the ordinary. I ended up eating half the salad as she could not finish it (nice size portion). I concur with my wife. As for me, I had the lamb burger. I had ordered it medium, but it seemed more like "well done (how most others would describe it). To me it was simply over cooked....as if left under a warming lamp while preparing the other dishes. One would assume the lamb fat would have kept the meat moist. We did not order drinks despite the place was a pub. We were just there for the food. MUST come at 4-5:30PM for the (SHH)Super Happy Hour, some of the food price at (HH)Happy Hour 5:30-6:30PM are the same as ordering off the regular menu although the drinks are cheaper but what is the point in drinking on an empty stomach! Sausage Rolls: pastry is super flaky although the sausage part lack a bit of seasoning but there is this overpowering mustard sauce on the bottom so overall ok. Scotch Eggs: I called this the meat lover delight, the boiled egg is covered with mince meat, roll in breadcrumbs and deep fry. Super delicious! Shepherd Pie: buttery smooth mashed potatoes I can eat that just by itself, the meat filling was a bit on the salty side but goes well with alcohol. I would just order this basic on that mashed potatoes. Steak Sandwich: overcooked steak although it comes with a mountain of fries which kind of makes up for steak, still will skip this next time. Bread Pudding: ok, a bit tippy at the end to remember this... Our server Andrew was phenomenal, when we arrive there it's only few customers but when we leave it was already 90% full, and he was still the same attentive & friendly self so thank you Andrew! It is an Irish pub looking pub with lot of TV but it was clean, no sticky table or un-sanitize bathroom, their bathroom are definitely cleaner then most of the other establishment on Castro Street.
