As a coffee-crowned Madison royal, it feels sort of strange to rate MOKA this high - 4 stars...ONLY because of my perception of the venue way back when it first opened. I don't visit often because it's drive-thru and walk-in only, but over time, MOKA has sweetened its way into my caffeinated rolodex. If the drive-thru is busy, backed-up, a staffer comes outside, even in the middle of a brutal Wisconsin winter(!), to take rolling orders, so your beverages are ready upon payment - this is fantastic! Prices are a-ok and staff is very, very friendly and helpful. They are quite chatty, asking about your day, commenting on the weather, current events, etc. While it's not on my way to work, especially because I don't own a vehicle, I would happily stop at MOKA again and again! read more

Good stuff! I recommend the black and white mocha: This particular beverage is breakfast dessert. So start your day out right, and order the black and white mocha. It is sweet, well balanced, and probably has a million calories, but I would order it again because it was awesome! I was a little confused when I pulled into the parking lot, because I initially thought it was just a drive-thru, but if you walk around to the other side, there is a regular storefront with seating. I forgot how much I liked Moka when I moved from Madison a few months ago. But after coming back for a visit this past weekend (not just to check out Moka... just wanted to be clear =P) I have been flooded by wonderful memories of delicious, hot drinks ordered and picked up from the comfy confines of my car during the cold, winter months and decadent, creamy blended drinks during the humid summers. The drinks are great. Whether you are trying a seasonal specialty such as a sugar and spice latte or a regular cappuccino the shots are pulled just right, the milk is not burned, there is just the right amount of syrup, and the blended drinks are mixed up to perfection (no huge chunks of ice like I often get from *ahem* chain coffee shops). They also have baked goods from local bakeries, but they sell out quick of the good stuff. And then there's the awesome customer service. To be honest, I used to be intimidated by the small talk at the drive-thru window, but I've come to appreciate it, especially the days when the only human interaction I have is with my 5- and 3-year-olds. Updated review, One of the spots I like to get coffee, again! After an unfortunate customer service experience both my husband and I experienced, Moka reached out to us to apologize. I love it when a business goes above and beyond to show appreciation for their customers, regardless of one staff member. There are so many options to choose from so they surely have something to please everyone. The prices are also decent enough that you can order a few extra coffee to treat those you might be on your way to see. It's also really convenient that they have breads and muffins which are also really tasty. I try to get something different every time I go, and I have enjoyed every single cup. Service has been awesome and we are glad once again to have Moka back in our lives! read more

How do I love thee, Moka? Let me count thy ways. Oh, screw it! I can't! This place is simply too amazing! I swear they are practicing some form of alchemy in there, that is, if alchemy had anything to do with coffee. Coffeechemy? Are they turning coffee beans into a precious, aromatic fluid with the power to awaken the body, mind and soul in there? Damn straight they are! And they do it with style- dare I say "pizazz" - with a little mom-and-pop feel, that is were your mom and pop about 95% hipster, 3% all-American twenty-somethings, 1% moms and 1% totally sweet Midwestern grandmas. Their coffee is amazing. There is simply no other place in town that compares. They will learn your name and your quirky requests if you're a regular and are never, ever snooty or put out about anything you ask for. And their flavored drinks are really inventive and delicious. The coffee is so good and the service so wonderful you don't think twice about the price. It's worth it. As pitiful as it is, my morning Moka is often what gets me out the door in the morning. My only complaint: Take over the coffee place by my office, please. One Moka for a town the size of Madison is simply not enough. read more

The mochas are the only item I've had. They're not very strong or distinguishable from most places. Once we went in and bought a mocha, as am I drinking it, I become puzzled by small white waxy balls. They're not very yummy and their texture is less than desirable. I contact them and receive a free new mocha. The service was great and friendly. They mentioned that cups may have caused it, but a few Internet results eluded that that happens when you steam milk after its prime. read more

Quick service despite the long line. We were surprised to see an associate coming out to take advanced orders. This made for a quick exchange at the window and we were on our way. I love this place. I went for the first time tonight with my good friend. The barista was amazing and beautiful. She had blue hair and told good jokes. I appreciated her service to the coffee industry and this world. I feel like anyone would be lucky to be her lifelong companion. Love to come here on my days off, mainly because the basic coffee drinks (brewed & iced coffee) are more affordable here than at downtown coffee shops. I treat myself weekly to a dose of happiness every time I go to this place, I get greeted by a smiling mostly familiar faces, awesome moods, & possibly entirely too much coffee intake. Never the less, it's a great experience & definitely a treat well worth every penny spent. I haven't tried anything else on the menu, but the hot, cold, frozen Black & White Quad w/an extra shot is phenomenal & a must try for sure. I was introduced to this establishment a little over a year ago & I have been stopping for the same thing once a week; if not more often per se. While the location isn't always the most convenient, the incredible staff more than make up for it. Even my nephews love this place when they come to visit. The coffee is great and so are the people. My only complaint is that it seems the sizes have been reduced considerably but the price is the same. I totally get the reasoning to keep businesses open and profitable, but it's also kind of disappointing for my budget. This is my weekly treat and it may have to go to the wayside. :( It would be better if the same size cup was used, but perhaps the bottom of the cup to be curved in, or narrower, etc....like many of the "big" companies do with their packaging. People think that they are getting that big product they are used to, but just that 1/2 ounce - ounce less which adds up for the company. Everyone is happy...for the most part. read more

The building's exterior and interior had a modern design (which is welcome in this run down part of town), the staff were upbeat, and the to-go cups even had little monkey stickers on them. I was having a great time drawing a unicorn on their colored chalkboard until I took a sip of their strawberry banana smoothy... pure sugar/some anonymous ingredients from a little bag in their freezer. I wanted a good iced coffee on a quiet Sunday morning, and I wanted it to be drive-thru so that I wouldn't have to haul my kid out of the car, and I got exactly what I wanted. The fact that staff step outside to take your order while you're in line is interesting and a little endearing. It's much more personal than speaking into a crackly intercom box, for sure. While here, I was also able to score a half-shot mocha made with almond milk for my gracious host, which she really appreciated since almond milk isn't offered at all coffeeshops. The concept of drive-through anything- let alone drive-through EVERYTHING- was foreign to this recent NYC transplant. After six months, now, I can confidently say I am a devout convert to this lifestyle. Moka has played an integral part in my drive-through enligtenment. Firstly: I have crushes on legit every. barista. here. They've all got a magical little twinkle in their eyes (though perhaps that's the look of someone strung the hell out on caffeine? But I'm leaning towards twinkle-magic) and are always quick to welcome you with a smile. They are engaging and upbeat and refreshingly genuine in their personhood -- vs. no-personality-Robot-Baristas found elsewhere. I love each of them and want to marry them all. Their coffee & drinks could be complete shit and I would still continue to go there daily. Fortunately, their coffee & drinks are the bee's knees. Scrumptious as hell. They have soy milk AND almond milk, and neither are of the yucko cheap brand variety; this ish is the real deal. Wait-time for drink prep is negligable-- ideal for the days (everyday?) you are running crazy late and rushed. Though sometimes my drink comes out TOO fast and interrupts my clumsy attempts at flirting w/ crushable baristas, forever thwarting the potential for numbers exchanged/dates gone on/soulmates connected/happily ever afters.
