Stopped in for lunch while in town. Ample seating and cool modern/rustic vibe. Full liquor bar and service was great! We started with an order of the smoked wings, 3/5. I wasn't a huge fan, they tasted like hotdogs and were fried as well. I ordered "The Smitty" which was a brisket sandwich with sliced sausage,cheese, pickles and onions. The portion was huge! I ate some meat before I could actually eat the sandwich-a good thing. They have various sauces on the table and my favorite was by far the mojo. The collard greens were just okay. Came to this place wanting BBQ after a long day of exploring a national park. Man this place definitely hit the spot we came here during lunchtime and it was not crowded. We were seated right away and our server was super helpful. For starters we had the most delicious burnt ends in Gainesville. The meat was juicy. And for my entree I had the Two-Meat Combo which consisted of The Texas Hot Links and the Pulled Pork Shoulder accompanied by a side of sweet mashed potatoes and smoked yellow corn and I got that with a slice of toast. My father got the Beef Brisket with a side french fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw wasn't the best but our waitress was able to switch it out for some smacking mac & cheese. This was some of the best barbecue I've had in a long time! The pulled pork was so tender without being fatty. The mac and cheese was creamy, cheesy, and delicious. The green beans were cooked perfectly! I loved trying all the different types of barbecue sauces and using different ones for each bite. Came in for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. Wasn't busy at all. Street parking out front is $0.50 /hour. We sat outside on the covered patio since it was a nice day out. They bring you a basket of sauces when you sit down. We got the Smoked chicken nachos appetizer - was great! Also got the Brisket plate with a Side salad and French fries. We split the plate between 2 people and they brought it out on 2 separate plates for us - same with the sides, which was really nice. Service was quick and staff were friendly. Nice outdoor seating area but it does smell like piss from the street/ sewer outside. Inside is nice. Facility is clean. TV's for sports. Bathrooms in back were very clean. My husband enjoyed coming here in college, so I was excited to try it. We arrived around 11:30 on a Saturday and were some of the only people there. Our waitress was great and the food came quickly. We were in town for a football game, and as usual, we try to find somewhere new to eat, and Gainesville never lets you down. Well, somehow, this little BBQ joint slipped right past us. On our way into town we happened to notice it while looking for dinner. The web page and other reviews said it's a BBQ and whiskey place. Well, we happen to really like both of those, so we had to try it out. We got there, and it's a very nice place. Very clean, open plan and a pretty good size, as well. We grabbed a seat at the bar, and are greeted fairly quickly. We ordered an old fashioned and a bees knees. Both were very good, so far so good. We thought the double battered onion rings soled good. It's pretty much what you would expect. A huge plate of rings. Very nicely done. Up next, dinner. Around this time we noticed the bartender started to lose interest in our side of the bar. The food came out, looked really good. My wife was able to order a second drink, and I should have, but we didn't realize we were done. I'll explain later. The brisket was good, lots of flavor and beetroot sauce and the rub, there seemed to be a sweet and spicy thing going on. The baked beans and sweet potato, not her favorite sides. I had the fried chicken, it was almost like a chicken fried chicken. It was pretty good. I think it was about 70 degrees out, so that's cold to us Floridians, so fried chicken and gravy was perfect comfort food. Again, I little spicy. But good. The green beans and mashed potatoes were lacking. At this point we were full, our plates are pushed away and piled in front of us. My drink had been empty for awhile now, and after 20 minutes, or so, I was almost finished with my water and no bartender in sight. At this point we just want to leave. I think there were 4 or 5 employees at the other end of the bar talking, on their phones, etc. it was not very busy. After waving for a couple of minutes, someone finally comes over and we could pay. Everything started as a 4, but after being ignored for that long, it definitely dropped. So a solid 3 1/2 stars. We will probably be back again, at least try a couple of other things, some other sides. Hopefully the service is addressed a little. read more

I rarely leave negative reviews, but my experience at Hogtown Barbecue warrants a serious warning to others. The food was absolutely unacceptable. Within hours of eating there, I became extremely sick, and the symptoms lasted for two full days. No restaurant serving the public should be operating under conditions that lead to that kind of reaction. Equally concerning was the overall cleanliness of the establishment. The dining area and visible kitchen spaces were noticeably dirty, and it left me questioning how this business is passing any form of health inspection. At this point, I genuinely do not understand how the health department has not intervened. For anyone considering visiting this place: don't. The conditions are unsanitary, the food quality is alarming, and my experience left me questioning the safety of eating there at all. Until the owners take immediate corrective action -- and until the health department ensures compliance -- this restaurant should be avoided. read more

I went in on a Monday afternoon after going to another restaurant to pick up my credit card that I mistakenly left over there. This was one of the restaurants that was open for lunch near downtown, so I decided to give it a shot. There wasn't a lunch menu, so I thought the pulled pork sandwich for 14 dollars would be a decent lunch. It came with a side, so I went with the smoked corn. It took a little while to get my food, but when it came, it was good and nicely sized. There was an ample amount of pulled pork, which looked to be slowed cooked and juicy. The bun was soft, but did a good job holding the meat. I added some of the chipotle BBQ sauce that was homemade, and it added a good kick and flavor. The corn had a nice smoky flavor and complemented the sandwich nicely, but it did get a bit soggy after a while. Thus, it is good to eat that first, then the sandwich. The service was a bit slow, but still friendly and helpful. They did apologize for the delays and made sure I was doing ok. The dining area was decent size and there is a bar on the side. It was a pretty casual environment with soft rock and country music in the background. There was not much of a crowd when I was there, but college hasn't started there yet. I don't recall seeing outdoor seating, but it was too hot for that anyways. I was able to find free street parking nearby and walk to the restaurant. Mojo is a decent BBQ joint in the Gainesville area. I wish they had a lunch menu, but the prices were relatively reasonable. I would try the drinks next time, but only for dinner. The prices looked reasonable for the cocktails, and I did see some enjoying them. I will definitely visit again if I go to Gainesville craving some good BBQ. read more

The collards and black eyed peas were excellent. All the sauces were well put together, I preferred the Mojo with my brisket and the Vinegar was perfect on the collard greens. The Texas Toast was exactly what I want with BBQ and was the best I've had in years, I usually take one bite and that's too much. The brisket hit all the marks, but the Turkey breast, it was incredible and would have been a shame to put sauce on it. I'm assuming it was brined, no evidence of injection but plenty of evidence of perfection! Excellent selection of bourbons and whiskeys, I enjoyed a wheat Old Elk. Service was just right and it's a great space. I'll definitely be back to try the pork and wings. read more

The Hogtown serves some very Legit BBQ in DT Gainsville.  Their meats are nicely seasoned and very well cooked.  Available selections include North Carolina, Pulled Pork, and Burnt Ends. Tip: The meat portion sizes are very generous, as are those for the sides The sides they serve here are every bit as good as the meats - my favorite to date are the mashed sweet potatoes :-) The service is good, and the whole venue is nicely appointed and spacious. We visited for lunch the day after the hurricane passed by. Very few people in the restaurant, so service was extremely quick, very attentive and helpful. The que was very well done, tender, great smoke and bark. Will be back to try the chicken as noone in our table ordered it and everything else was superb. The sides were excellent and had a slight flavor twist. The sauces were nice with the MOJO sauce being a surprise in that it had a slightly chunky texture, smoky and not sweet. Excellent BBQ, and since I'm from Texas, that's saying something. A very eclectic establishment that sort of looks like an oversized, dimly lit bar, the variety of beers on tap is diverse with something for every palate. Not sure what you want? Ask for a taste and a small glass for you to try is quickly brought to you. Portions are huge - so keep that in mind when ordering. My husband and I split the pulled pork quesadilla (which is listed as an appetizer) and it was plenty for us for lunch. The smoked turkey is spectacular. Another in our party ordered this and gave us a taste - it was tender, juicy, flavorful and probably the best smoked turkey I've tasted (and I've had my share, that's for sure). Service was excellent and atmosphere is very unique with lots of tables. Interestingly decorated - truly unique. Probably the best BBQ that you'll find within 100 miles. We thought the food here was amazing! We also enjoyed the multiple barbecue sauces. We tried the turkey, brisket, chicken, as well as mac & cheese and beans. We enjoyed all of it. The service was a little slow, despite the dining room, being slow, but all in all, it was a wonderful experience. I want to like this more than I do. The portions are good and the quality is good. On the downside, I wasn't crazy about the flavors. The pulled pork sandwich had a nice portion of tender, non-fatty meat. There was, however, no robust flavor. It was really good when I added sauce but I think the meat should have an amazing flavor on its own. The Brunswick stew was more tangy than I prefer but very good quality and tasted very good when I added sweet sauce. I was excited about the coke slaw because it looked like it came from KFC (don't judge me). Other than the chop of the cabbage there is no comparison: again, there was very little flavor. They have a plate that comes with all the meats (chicken, turkey, brisket and pulled pork) which is enough for 5 or 6 people. It is really big and they all taste delicious!! I was surprised that I liked the turkey since I'm not a fan of turkey meat. Also the sides were on spot! The place looks like inside of a factory, very neat. I like the decoration and the vibes. I ordered the ribs and it was so delicious and they brought out about 6 different sauces to flavor my ribs with. The mac and cheese and fries also made good sides (comes with two of your choice). we came here on a Sunday afternoon around 4 o'clock. honestly we may have been the only customers but once we dug into the food I could care less. The ambience was very nice though and the bar area looked very modern, clean and had a lot of beverage options. my wife and I elected for a platter that came with several meat options and different sides. everything was good, but I want to talk about the two things that stood out. their fries with brisket... Yeah I would come back to Gainesville simply for that, and the old fashion that I had. this was maybe the best old fashion I've ever had and if I was local... uh oh. We also dabbled in some smoked chicken nachos.
