Hamitbach is an Israeli restaurant located on the outdoor patio of the Chabad of Downtown San…read moreDiego. If you come at the right time, then there are open parking spaces adjacent to the building that you can use while visiting. Because of their observance of the Jewish calendar, the place is closed on Saturday and only open for a few hours on Friday afternoon. Normal operating hours begin at noon from Sunday to Friday. The food was served cafeteria style. You pick the vehicle... pita, baguette, laffa (flatbread), or plate and then a protein... chicken shawarma, kifta (ground meatball) kabab, chicken pargiot (thigh), chicken schnitzel, or falafel. Except for the falafel, all the other proteins and whichever vehicle was selected cost $20+ each. That was rather pricey for a pita or baguette. Behind the service counter, you could see a spit on which the shawarma was cooking. There was also a flat-top grill to warm the other meats. I had never tried chicken thighs as an item at a Middle Eastern eatery. The pargiot was my choice as a plate. A generous selection of vegetarian sides (e.g. slaw) filled the round metallic dish along with hummus, tahini, and flatbread. The cubed chicken thighs were marinated with a seasoning containing onions, parsley, garlic, and spices. The flavor was mild while the meat was very juicy. Before I sat down at a picnic table, there was a station of complimentary side dishes adjacent to the service counter. Pickles, olives, fried eggplant, and what looked like an Israeli version of kimchi were available to supplement your order. The service was fine from the worker who assembled my plate. I came at an off-hour so only two other parties were seated while I was there. I can only imagine how busy Hamitbach can be after a service has concluded inside the Chabad.

The place is rarely full and we are also always quickly seated. We often sit outside on the patio. They have a lot of items to select from and we have always enjoyed what we got. We usually get the same server and she is always friendly. I have also ordered breakfast items for lunch with no issues. My only concern is that the menu is so big that rarely ordered items could get dodgy but we have never had that issue. I would say if that is your concern order something that shows up a lot on the menu or that is guaranteed fresh like produce for example (that can't be frozen and you can see it is good right away) We will be back.

The service was good, though I hated watching our server balance our meals on one hand while answering the phone. Luckily, she didn't linger too long. We probably won't come back- just because we were just trying something new, we have other breakfast places we love for the future. The omelet was wonderful. The well- done filet mignon was more like medium well with a bit too much red for my taste. And, I'm always sorry when a cook thinks laying cheese on top of the scrambled eggs is the same thing as scrambled eggs with cheese. What was most memorable was the way at least two different staff members checked to make sure we had what needed in terms of coffee refills, etc

Of course, the meats are tougher to replicate, but this is the absolute BEST vegan bacon I have ever had. The sausage is great too. The sandwiches are good, but I think that the last time we went they had a heavy mustard hand because it's all I could taste. I would skip the Turkey-Bacon Club and get the Reuben instead. I'm looking forward to trying the BLT and the hot dogs! The cream cheese is reeeeeally good too. We tried the Jalapeno and the Bacon-Scallion. I recommend getting one of those added to your bagel sandwich.

Captain's Log, Stardate 21509.7…read more This past Friday I set my course for Did Z Akins in La Mesa -- a roadside star on I‑8 that my crew and I had passed a thousand times but never boarded. At long last we beamed down, and the experience surpassed every expectation. From the moment we entered, the atmosphere felt like coming home to a welcoming starbase. The staff treated us with genuine warmth and patience as we navigated a menu full of storied classics. Their attentive service turned a simple meal into a memorable mission. My first officer aka wife enjoyed a superbly composed salad, and chose the Turkey Club -- both delivered with thoughtful care. I began with the biscuits and gravy, a traditional hit that tasted like comforting shore leave. But the true highlight was the patty melt: perfectly seared, with lush caramelized onions and melted cheese that achieved harmony at warp speed. It was, without hyperbole, the best patty melt I've encountered in this quadrant. Each bite was a cascade of flavor that felt like discovering a thriving new world. This kitchen knows how to respect ingredients and execute classics flawlessly. No extra condiments were necessary -- the craftsmanship spoke for itself. DZ Akins is now a plotted course for every future convoy through I‑8. Highly recommended for anyone seeking honest, stellar diner fare and service that treats you like family among the stars. Captain 619, stay salty my friends!
