Had an early Mother's Day lunch with my mom and I had been wanting to try this place for a long time. We're Puerto Rican and finding a good PR restaurant in Miami is hard. This was one of the best meals we've ever had, my mom loved it so much she started to reminisce about her childhood, the taste took her back to being on the island. Wow! The arroz con gandules reminded me of the one my grandma used to make for us. It's not a large restaurant so I can see why they don't take reservations but I would totally wait if I had too. The Piña Coladas were delicious and the shot of Coquito at the end of the meal was the perfect touch. Our server even gave us an extra shot so we could take it for Abuela as she passed a few months ago and this was our first Mother's Day without her. It can be a little warm as the day we went it was pretty hot outside and it didn't appear the a/c could keep up but that's Miami for you. I recently had a late dinner at this Puerto Rican restaurant, and it was an amazing experience. The food was 10/10, the music was great, and we felt very welcome as an LGBTQ couple. Our waiter was very friendly, and the manager personally talked to us to make sure we were having a great time. The drinks were also amazing. I live in New York and flew to Miami, specifically adding this restaurant to my itinerary. Although they do not accept reservations and it can sometimes be hard to get through on the phone, when they do pick up, they are very friendly. The prices were fair for the experience you get, and everyone here is really friendly. We spent a lot of money, but it was worth it. The Coquito was 10/10, and I highly recommend it. The restaurant felt cool inside, not too hot, which was very comfortable. They also had a photographer, and we paid to have pictures taken. The fried cheese was really good especially with the guava sauce, I wish I would got some of that sauce to go. The pina colada was good I was definitely a little tipsy after drinking half of it lol. I believe the other appetizer was like a fish fritter. It was Okay definitely needs a sauce to go with it. For the entree I ordered the steak and onions. My out-of-the-town friend wanted to try this place and I love mofongo, so we're more than happy to give it a try. Going in it was great vibe, colorfully painted walls, waitstaff in tropical attire, the place looked fun, happy and happening. My friend, being the tourist, opted for the pina colada in a pineapple, but was underwhelmed with the taste. As a tourist, she also wanted the huge, IG-able kan-kan pork chop, which is basically a fried pork chop with the belly chicharron attached and arching like a rainbow on the plate. We pretty much spent the money for a photo op. The pork chop was so dry and tough. The chicharron was no better. We usually love the crunchy skin, but this was so hard that they may break your teeth. The mofongo was a dry, dense, tasteless puck. The shrimp in our other mofongo could have been fresher. Our waitress was also rather pushy, and impatient with us as my friend, trying Puerto Rican food for the first time, had a few questions about the menu. We left half the food uneaten, and I feel sorry for the tourists who came here for their first taste of mofongo. If you're visiting Little Havana, Mofongo is not to be missed. The restaurant is highly rated as it is, but after checking it out for myself, now I know why. First, the service is pretty good. Our server was attentive, fun, and really took care of us without being overbearing. The atmosphere inside is lively - Latin music is playing, some of the servers are singing along and really appear to be enjoying themselves. The menu has a lot to offer and I really liked that you can customize your Mofongo options to include green plantain, ripe plantain, or even yuca - as well as a variety of sauces. Be warned that the Mofongo is huge! It comes out as a towering pile, almost bigger than your head. Probably enough for two people to share honestly. Our server brought out some hot chicken broth for us to pour over the Mofongo to soften it up, and a pink sauce for dipping. Everything was super flavorful! The shrimp was large and juicy. The carne frita was smoky and moist too. If I had a bottomless stomach I would have kept eating and eating it. Luckily, the Mofongo is already packed in a plastic container inside of the vessel it comes in, so it's easy to pop a lid on and take it to go. The meal is also finished off with two little shots of coquito, to our surprise. And all this was at lunch time on a Monday! I would absolutely go back next time I'm in Miami. read more

Not what I was expecting and just excellent! Next up I ordered the chicken breast mofongo. I could only eat half as the portion is a decent size but very filling. BFF had the combination plate (fried pork (chicharrons), pastele, and arroz con gandules). Lastly, dessert was flan de coco(nut). BFF also had "cafe con leche" as an after meal coffee. Service was excellent and the servers were so genuinely friendly, attentive, and helpful. If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. Came here after the Marlins game and Yoana, our server was as fantastic as the food was. We had the beef empanadas and the rolled sweet corn and we began to get a glimpse of what tastiness was awaiting us. For entrees we had the pork cubes with rice and I had the chicken dish with the plantains and cheese melted over it with the Spanish rice and salad and my boyfriend had the steak and onions with the rice and beans. I don't know if we've ever had anything more delicious. The food is soooooo flavorful, it's incredible. We were hungry so forgot to snap the appetizers before digging in but man! You have got to try this place! They cap off your night with complimentary coquito shots!!! We came in after the Gay8 celebration on Calle Ocho, so I know our experience probably wasn't the same as a "normal" day there. We were told it would be a 15 minute wait, but were in seated about two minutes. We were guzzling water to try and sober up, and our servers continually kept our glasses full, despite the fact that every table was taken and they were clearly busy! First time trying this restaurant. The food was good. The portions are huge . The waiter told us that the Mofongo was enough for one person. I think it is for like 3 people, we had so much left overs. The taste was delicious, we tried the mixed seafood, fried pork, and churasco mofongo all are delicious. Located in the heart of Calle ocho, you'd think that it's be slightly difficult to find great Puerto Rican food in little Havana - but Mofongo blew us away with their amazing service, excellent island vibes, and delicious food! Muy rico! I'm surprised they don't have more stars. Four isn't enough! Their food is the real deal. We started off with the guineos en escabeche, or green bananas boiled then soaked in a briny sauce. Delicious starchiness in every bite, thought the pickled onions were a nice touch. Then with some surullos - fried sticks that are reminiscent like cornbread, dipped with their excellent mayo ketchup that was so tasty. Last we ended our starters with bacalaitos - fried salted cod discs fried to perfection. I had these for the first time and they were perfectly seasoned. Now onto our mains - the namesake of this restaurant- the Mofongos came out steaming hot and HUGE - a reminder of how large Puerto Rican portions truly are. I went for shrimp while my boyfriend went for the fried pork, and both were meticulously well seasoned. The caldito (broth) and criolla (creole) sauce were also amazing for dipping and accompanying the Mofongo. We highly recommend! You think at this point we were tapped out, but onto dessert - we opted to share a cheese flan. Don't let the portion size fool you - the flan is RICH and filling, and the presentation was beautiful! Heavily recommend for someone who has only had the regular flan. Everyone in the staff was amazing - from the people who served us to our waiter who was hilarious and super friendly. To top it off, they serve your check with a shot of coquito, a traditional Christmas drink made with coconut, cinnamon and alcohol. We left very happy and VERY full. We got there a few mins before closing on a Thursday night, and they were busy. We waited about 15 mins for a table which we sat outside. Our waiter was very nice and knowledgeable. He made sure to explain everything to us in detail so we understood what we were ordering. We ordered a pina colada, fried pork mofongo, avocado salad, traditional plate- which had fried pork, rice and pigeon peas and tostones (fried green plantains) we also ordered the sampler platter which came with beef empanadas, fried pork, fried chicken, Tostones, and fried fritters (might be yuca) it was sooooo much food! Had been waiting to go to Mofongo's for a little bit, as the few times I had gone there I had not been able to get a table, but had a friend in town who insisted so we tested our luck and got lucky. Ambience made me feel like I was home. The bartenders and waiting staff all get into it when there's a birthday and they all play güiros and panderetas to sing Happy Birthday which was a nice touch. Regarding the food? Delicious. The fried cheese (queso frito) had a traditional guava sauce on top that made me feel like I was back in middle school. We shared those among the group and it was a hit, albeit the fact that the cuts were a bit big in size and the cheese was a bit cold on the inside. We had a churrasco mofongo/trifongo, and I had a short rib trifongo. The meats were very tender, and I was a bit concerned that the short rib sauce/marinade would not go with the trifongo but that notion was dispelled immediately. Drinks? Virgin piña colada tasted good but I don't recall piña coladas requiring a huge dash of cinnamon on top. That's a foul. We also had coco-parcha mojitos and I could barely taste the coconut. Considering I just had three of these a few days ago back in Puerto Rico, I was expecting much more. That being said - those mojitos were definitely strong in alcohol content. And lastly, the complimentary shots of coquito? They were very thin. Almost seemed watered down. I make my own coquito so my expectations were higher, but it might seem like something others would enjoy. Downsides? The food for three with those drinks? Ended up at about $165 after tip. Way too expensive for the type of food. Also, after they included the 18% service charge in the bill already, they include additional suggested gratuity at 18 and 20% so if you're not careful, you're gonna end up paying about 40% tip on your bill. I always try to find a new restaurant to check out for my birthday weekend; I'd driven by here and always seen the crowds so "vamos pa' ya" Given the crowds, I messaged them to make a reservation and my table was ready for Friday night! A couple of friends were already seated as I made a fashionably late entrance, and our waitress Leidy was attentive and patient as we waited for the rest of our party. We started through their appetizer menu by enjoying the fried cheese and guava dish. Served with a sprinkling of mixed greens, the five pieces of cheese were brought to us perfectly hot and flavorful. The guava sauce was evenly spread out and sweet without being overwhelmingly so. It made for a delicious introduction! Next appetizer up was their "jibarito sampler" (aka meat tapas). I'm talking about a large tray of green plantain chips, fried cheese, and yummy meat along with "regular" ketchup, a mayo ketchup and very much a hot sauce I enjoyed. This is the way to go, but you might get filled. Pace yourself to enjoy the namesake star. The mofongo, basically a fried green plantain shell mashed with salt, garlic, broth, and olive oil in a wooden bowl, along with chicharron (pork belly) and chicken my case, was the highlight of my culinary celebration. I ordered a little extra broth ("caldo") to keep it nice and juicy. My dish was pretty tasty, and generous enough that I had enough for Saturday lunch takeout. They also have a few other non-mofongo courses to try. As far as drinks, my chardonnay was perfectly cool and dry. The mojito I tried was really sweet, and I definitely want to try their pina colada in the pineapple shell I saw at a few other tables. Since I was there for my birthday, and mentioned when making my reservation, I was treated to a fun Cumpleanos Feliz serenade by the restarant's staff. My flan had just the right amount of jiggle, sweetness and I loved the presentation as well as flavor of the strawberry garnish. Oh, and our group enjoyed a complimentary coquito shot apertif! This is by far one of the best Puerto Rican restaurants in Miami. I was recently in Miami and had been looking for an authentic Puerto Rican restaurant as I was dying for some Sorullitos and Bacalaitos. I decided to stop by without a reservation as I was already in the area and it had only been me. The restaurant was packed at around 3PM ! They have a nice big outdoor area with a bunch of tables along with there indoor dinning in which they are following covid precautions and tables are separated. I decided to just sit at the bar I got 2 appetizers and a steak tostone sandwich. By the time the entree came I couldn't eat it as I had eaten both appetizers alone ! The sorullitos and bacalaitos were my absolute favorite, the chefs know exactly what they are doing. The service was amazing the entire time, and it looks as if they also make some amazing drinks !
